The groove is ambiguous: The synth bass pumping out 16th notes, while the kick and snare hit 1, 2 and 3, with a clap on 4 every other bar. It's like full tempo and half tempo simultaneously, endlessly starting and stopping, making it urgent and sexy at the same time. Genius.

That "percussion" was and is insane. There is some level of genius here in figuring out how the words and these sounds mix. Right ? I'd be interested in how this song came together.
I Would Die 4 U was recorded live with the band at First Avenue in Minneapolis - (the same club as where the live scenes for the movie were shot). Prince always forced his band members through gruelling rehearsal sessions. And when the movie was planned and later shot, he had more time to put into the album than he ever spent again, before or after, on any album. So I would say the magic comes from an insane amount of band rehearsals, including of course the immense talents of those band members. There were overdubs added later though. Prince tinkered with this album in a way he never did again. The mix was done by his personal sound engineer Susan Rogers in what was her first project with him. She has mentioned in interviews that she wished she would have been given more time to perfect both the recordings and the mix, (not just on Purple Rain by the way), but Prince was hopelessly impatient.
Such a great tune. And on album runs right into Baby I’m A Star. They’re were like buddy songs, and the videos are both live 1984 concert footage. Baby is looong, it was an encore, and they used to play them both uncut as 1 video on MTV. I was obsessed. You should do Baby I’m A Star. And the videos.
That’s true, this song especially is quite overt about it. Prince often brought his religion into his lyrics, even if he was singing about sex. On the Purple Rain album though, he does display a little bit of Messiah complex, (see the title track). It was most probably just an act, a pose while he aimed for the upper echelons of pop stardom. (He soon dropped it, after Purple Rain, after he lost interest in mega stardom).
@@michaelk1449 Right, if you think about it, there’s not too much daylight between super fandom and religion. On the title track he explicitly asks people to follow him, close our minds and let him ”guide” us. With a hit movie and a monster crossover album, he surely aimed for (and conquered) MJ territory. Only to drop that ambition as soon as he was done with a minimal Purple Rain tour.
The greatest band ever. Saw this tour April Fools Day 1985. The one and only time i would see them as a whole. They broke up in 1986. I saw Prince 16 times after that. The last being a month and a half prior to his death. Just him and a piano. It was a poetic end to my journey as a Prince fan and this song has always touched my heart. When he sings it as a ballad it’s even more meaningful. The official video for this track was taken from the tour. It’s an incredible 14 minute version including a Sheila E on drums. Check it out. Really great!

This song was a hit when they came and a top 10 single when it's came out and was the fourth single of this album. It's was the fourth top 10 single of this album (Purple Rain) after the n.1 ''When Doves Cry'' and ''Let's Go Crazy'' and the another top 10 single, the title track. A great single and the ''Purple Rain'' album was huge in 1984-1985.
I think this was the first Prince track that really made me sit up and notice how amazing he was. Me and my housemate were cleaning the house and she dug out her 12" of this and it blew my mind.
1984 was a great year for music. I was 3 when this dropped and it was my favorite song on Purple Rain album, it made me cry and gave me frissons; I understood it’s transcendent nature back then. But Prince loved Jesus, the song is praise to Christ
Prince lyrics really make you think.
Born on the planet in 1958: Michael Jackson, Prince & Madonna. The world has never been the same since! 3 Iconic Artists! ❤️🔥🏆⭐️

Finally someone reacted to this song!!!!
One of the greatest pop musicians in the last 60 years. Ranks right up there with only the very best. His passing was a terrible loss.
I first heard this song when I saw the movie purple rain and I loved it and that’s the same time I fell in love with Prince
Anything from Purple Rain, I’d recommend watching the video.
A perfect Prince song!!

Prince got on a religious kick on some songs, and this is one of them, believe it or not. Check out the lyrics! It’s the best Christian rock ever 😂

Yeah, I guess he was a PR messiah huh? He had a movie to sell with unknown actors, including himself lol

Wait so you didn’t know this song??? It’s a CLASSIC!
I first heard this when I bought the album on cassette to put in my personal stereo (Walkman) in the 80's.still love it!
Yeah it's something different about this song that only Prince could produce. It's called Purple Music; Prince own genre.
You rock gurl.

Didn't realize how deep this song was until ppl started talking me
I’m not sure if you know this, but this song’s lyrics are speaking from the perspective of Jesus Christ, to the sinners of the world.
Deep.
I got it towards the end‼️😳
This may be my favorite prince song
There's a 30 min version of this song, not kidding, look it up..
