  • Lisa Gade reviews the XP-Pen Artist 15.6 Pro (not to be confused with the Artist 16 Pro and Artist 15.6 not Pro, which are different products). This pen monitor is new for late Jan. 2019, and it brings a lot of features you’d expect from a more expensive product--- a wide gamut full HD laminated display for reduced parallax and no air gap, a battery-free pen with 8,192 pressure levels and tilt support, express keys and a jog dial. It lists for $439 on XP-Pen’s website and sells for $399 on Amazon. ** Get it on Amazon: amzn.to/2TnDFwE .
    This is a pen display for artists, photo editors and CAD /3D render work. It’s fairly portable and light, comes with a folding plastic stand and cables. It competes with the recently released Wacom Cintiq 16.

    You do by far the best reviews on these art tablets, actually addressing nitty-gritty details like color gamut, latency, drivers, compatibility etc.
    Most reviewers just tend to go with 'it feels really good, but it's up to you' for the span of 10 minutes.

    Two things to note: I have the XP Pen Artist 15.6 (not the Pro version), and I plug the power USB cable directly into my laptop as well. It can also run off of a USB battery bank. So this can be a completely mobile option (until your laptop battery drains), then you'll just have to plug your laptop in to the wall. The other thing to note, is XP Pen sells spare/replacement cables on Amazon for $19.99, which seems fair to me.

    Nice review =) One thing: the calibration problem, where you see one cross and then you can't see the others, and also the clip studio paint problem with the off-set cursor, to solve them you have to put the interface scale at 100% (I thikn it works with 125% too). The old model had the same problem.

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  5 років тому +1

      Scaling is set to 100% for Windows (I assume you're not talking about the Mac driver?). It's a bug: behavior is variable- might get one crosshair, might get none. The Clip Studio Paint 3 -inch offset relates to WinTab mode, it's fine under Windows Ink mode, which is expected- there is no WinTab driver support AFAIK.

    I've been using this tablet for about 3 weeks now and, it is actually pretty darn tooting good. It's nice to draw on, has limited parallax and excellent pen strokes - no wave with latest drivers. The only negative that I could pull it for is the pen, it's good but a little TOO light. Calibrate and it's probably the best non-wacom device I have used. Excellent value for the money. One more thing, the surface pro 4, and other laptops, is able to drive the tablet so it can be taken to places where that is no power supply

    Something I wish you guys would do is measure the parallax and the input lag, which aren't hard to measure. Because no one does that and honestly we need numbers to see what the difference between these various tablets are. Because you already measure the screen levels, which is great. And that gives us a nice number to work off of, and compare to other tablets.

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  5 років тому +8

      I do not know of a way to scientifically measure parallax, which is why I show it live in the video instead in that extreme close up in Clip Studio Paint (the grayscale city piece). You can see me making small light gray marks on a mid gray background, crosshair showing- so you've got pen position, crosshair position and mark being made on the virtual canvas. We're talking at most a tenth of a millimeter (which is excellent for a pen display at this price). For lag, as someone else noted- you can actually see it happening in this video at some points. I used to do slow motion captures of large drawing motions like circles, but I'm not sure they're that helpful as they don't translate well into real world use cases.

    • @ALegitimateYoutuber
      @ALegitimateYoutuber 5 років тому +4

      @@mobiletechreview with paralax you can do it 2 decent ways. one is with a close up picture that shows the displays tablets pixels. Then you count pixel distance from pen tip to cursor. The other would be to use the picture itself and count the pixels in the image you took as a set distance. And from there you can just calculate the real world distance by the pixels measured. Granted those aren't hundred percent accurate, but the size of the errors wouldn't be enough to discredit the info.
      Well lag you can just measure through a video, where you just count the number of frames from the pen moving to the cursor moving. Then just do the math to get how many miliseconds the lag was. But for that you would have to also note the program and computer specs, just for clarity reasons.
      There's also ways to measure things like surface resistance, but that and other tests i'll admit no one but myself and a few others would probably be willing to spend the time and money doing. Since those things would require testing rigs, and also opening up the tablet.

    You mention that the parallax is much better now, but would you say it's better than the new Cintiq 16? Been debating between this one and the new cheaper 16. If the 16 is still better with parallax, then my next question is do you feel that it's due to the fact that the calibration setting isn't working right now currently and has the potential to be better once they sort that out? Other than that, thank you for this review!

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  5 років тому +12

      Excellent question! Sorta long answer, but here goes. The parallax seems even smaller on the Cintiq 16-- but only by a tiny margin (they're both very good). Granted, since I couldn't calibrate the Artist 15.6 Pro, there is a bit of mystery there. I didn't evenhave to calibrate the Cintiq 16- it was just spot on from the factory-- with the Artist, I won't be able to say for sure if calibration would help until they get that bug ironed out. I've actually reviewed a few budget pen displays (hello, Huion) that were worse after calibration.

Maybe the Wacom portable studio pro is waaay better, but I found my companion about as clunky to use as a standalone tablet plugged into a laptop. A 15 inch Windows tablet does not make a good sketchbook.
      I'd say the standalone Wacom or xppen 16" models (plus a laptop) is a good compromise for usability, upgradeability, and portability; and if you want a digital sketchbook for the plane / coffee shop, pick up an iPad pro + procreate or a surface pro + Leonardo (it's an app). I prefer the iPad.

      from what I could find out, the 22 pro is the best none wacom large tablet. I've looked specifically for reviews by animators on youtube and other sites, since animators will abuse and use the thing the most. And the general view is it's honestly very good. Now when asked should one save up for a higher end cintiq, they all say go for the cintiq. But also say if you can't go for a cintiq, the 22 pro is a solid choice until you save up and afford the top tier stuff.
      But on the idea of xp pen making a better 22 tablet. On the 15.6 pro promo video from them, i did mention they should make a professional grade tablet since they have everything for the novices, rookies, and amateurs. And got a reply saying "We will try our best to catch it up in pro market, stay tuned.☺" which could be them being cheeky fucks or a "oh wait until you see what else is coming" type response. So maybe they are planning to aim higher and make a top tier tablet. Or maybe they're making a 22 pro version 2, which honestly would be hard to pass up.

    Also one thing i want to say, I really don't like the multi use cables. i've never heard of any combo cable set up be good, and frankly it just comes off as a way to sell replacement parts. Because if you travel a lot, you're just going to bind your cables together and that will keep them compact and easy to manage, well ensuring you also have enough length. Plus if you don't travel a lot you're still going to manage your cables at your desk, thus the multi cables are completely useless for the user.

I know the Artisul is an older model but I've heard wonders about it (amazing colors and monitor overall as well as a very good pen performance). I don't know if newer is always better, maybe it is in the tech market. The laminated screen is the most atractive thing this tablet has for me, but I don't know if it's worth it just because of that even if the screen and pen aren't that good. This is described as a normal thing in the user manual, but I think that this is a defect, and i constantly notice this chromatic aberration while I work. If you know, is this normal? Maybe all graphic tablets of this type have such defects, including Cintiq?

    Hi there; I'm a huge fan of the channel's content. My question is: the XP-Pen Artist 15.6 Pro is better than the Parblo Coast 16? Thank you.

    Im thinking of getting this tablet and I do have Clip Studio on my laptop, but im not sure I understand what Lisa is talking about at 9:46? the tablet pc input versus the "wind tab" input?

    I currently have a Cintiq DTF-521. I've been watching XP-Pen for awhile, and I was wondering---would you say that's probably the best for your buck right now? Or is there something else you would recommend, if you don't mind me asking? I am considering this, but I was a bit worried about the color.

    Question is this tablet good enough for traveling?????

    • @Murtage33e
      @Murtage33e 5 років тому

      I own another XP pen and Wacom much like this tablet. I'd say with a laptop this is totally serviceable in a hotel room, or even a Starbucks, if you don't mind plugging everything in and looking a little silly. Traveling is fine.
      You couldn't use it in a plane or bus. You need a 120 volt outlet for both the laptop and tablet, and it'd take up too much room. Trust me, I have tried.

    May I have a little clarification about the cable? When You said you tested the straight through usb c cable did you mean you tried using a normal usb-c to usb-c cable?

    I'm conflicted between this and a huion kamvas 15 pro since the color is a lot better, the scroll wheel looks better too, but there's no tilt and battery free pen. What are y'alls thoughts?

    I have a toshiba sattelite 360 with 4k and it's a pretty small laptop with a lot packed in. I don't have a normal HDMI port or a CD rom insert for instance. Would this be a problem? I saw you connecting an HDMI in the video and I have that one which is the same as the one you plugged in at the back of your computer kind of shaped like an upside down trapezoid, but I don't have a regular square-ish one.

    May i ask a question which is better option to buy xp pen artist pro 15,6 or a wacom one in terms of pure perfomance currently i have intuos pro 3 so this will be my first drawing monitor? Ideal choice will be wacom 16 but currently I can’t effort that. Thank you for your time reading this.

    In your opinion, Wacom Cintiq 16, XP pen pro 22E, XP pen 16 pro XP 15.6 pro, which one display color best?
    I’ve been painting with my laptop for a while and suffered badly due to its low color accuracy. So I’m really struggling about my choice.

    Mobiletechreview always makes the most professional reviews with comparison against like products, and yet UA-cam doesn't put her reviews in search results. I have to manually search on her channel to find them. What is up with that?

    Just bought this tablet a few days ago... Any ideas how to fix pen pressure problems? I've installed the latest drivers for win10 but still. It worked the couple first days I used it but couldn't get it going again. I reinstalled drivers, but nothing does the trick. Otherwise it's a very nice piece of equipment, especially for its price.

    Question, even though it's worse than the Pro Pen 2, would it be superior to a 2013 Intous Pro? I'm asking since I'm considering upgrading to this.

    Lisa, i have an idea for expanding your footprint a little bit, as a teacher I'm always trying to consider good ways to work with my class (6th grade math/science). So ways to use technology to present ideas through a projector or a large front of the room display (65"etc") would be helpful. Thanks.
