I sold all my 40k armies and moved over to AoS at the start of 4th. Having an absolute blast. The game is better, the models are cooler, and the fanbase is infinitely more chill than 40k

As an AoS player, hearing "a Boltgun is what a spacemarine has, so it has to be the weapon that a Marine has" without any irony is hilarious to me - i think that is part of main difference between the communities - almost noone cares about WYSIWYG in AoS as long as I can tell what they are and a lot of 40K players seem to get their panties twisted over that
From what i've seen, most of the AoS community was very glad about the recent change of weapons in AoS from Swords or Spears to just "Celestial Weapons" or whatever - so much more creative freedom to do conversions or your own models for something instead of the prescribed "this is what they need to have...always"

From what I understand AoS is deliberately designed to be open and evolving so that they can continue to move the lore forward and release new ranges in perpetuity. I think the entire point is that it won't ever be set in stone.

@@toptopplayer-f7n I have no idea, never read it or played, I'm just an old square baser who's listened to ex-GW staff talk about why they killed of WHFB. Essentially GW need to squat old ranges and release new ones in order to not go under so having a lore that can be constantly moved forward allows that to happen.

Indeed, it was designed to be an open canvas to enable new products and developments that generate sales and broaden the potential uptake of the game. The Old World/FB was perceived as stagnant. Jordan Sorcery has a very informative interview with Alan Merrit on the subject on his channel. (That was the company point of view; I much prefer the Old World/FB, but I am not a PLC.)

@@toptopplayer-f7n oh you mean the old world? No the problem there was that they had no way to incentivise people to buy new minis for armies they already owned, they need to squat mini ranges and replace them to sustain their business model. The old world setting did not allow for that to be done, remaking High Elf spearmen or whatever for the 3rd time wasn’t going to get the kind of sales they wanted because high elf players already had the spearmen they needed. It just had nowhere to go. With AoS they can do whatever they want to keep selling new minis.

As far as I'm concerned AoS is much better than 40k, both models and rules. I really like the new Spearhead game but this is because I much prefer skirmish level games. I also prefer Fantasy games generally. Almost all Sci-Fi games run into the shooting range problem where the range of guns just doesn't make sense. Fantasy games still run into this problem but for some reason I can accept it more in a fantasy game than I can in a Sci-Fi game.

Think it’s worth considering a pretty huge chunk of the aos base went through whfb being destroyed, and those who stuck around or came back later following that ended up being cool with it - we lost a lot of hateful chuds or people less tolerant of change in that process who didn’t move on, which i think tees up gw to be braver and not get the sort of backlash they do on the 40k side

The issue GW have is two fold with settings.
In WHF the world was "The World" and barring regions of Ind and far east, they had painted in a lot of the setting, and it left little room for new factions, and they leaned away from those regions because of the fear of creating appropriating charactures. So the setting felt like it was set in stone, so new units etc would be met with "Well where have those come from".
We see similar in 40k with the new tank for Imperial Guard. Now this becomes two fold because the other issue GW has is that they can't just put any old concept art because of the Chapter House case - they only put out new art if there is to be a model of it, which brings us to the point of "New tank huh, how come we never heard of it before?" This also then is similar to the issues we have with Primaris. And the cynical collectors see this as a cash grab.
AoS has none of this because a) the setting the magical post-apocalyptic so there are thousands of lost empires for things to be recovered from. b) the plot moves forward at pace so new things are always appearing/evolving
In a similar manner the setting of Warmachine/Iron Kingdoms has an evolving setting, which has led to new models replacing old designs, out of a need to sell new stuff but also push the plot on, and the world, being just a singular world like WHF, is not fully detailed. We know really only what amounts to a third of what is North America in terms of land mass populated by kingdoms and peoples. That leaves scope to fill in gaps, create new things, and open up new gaps.

Age of Sigmar models are better than 40k imo. They show a lot more creativity in the recent releases as compared to the recent 40k releases that are typically looking very "copy and paste with a few changes" which sucks. The new blood angels models losing a lot of personality in them is the best example to me. AoS is a much more interesting variety for painting and that's all I'm interested in now so AoS is going to be replacing 40k for models to paint for me

I think AoS is the way it is cause of its community. The concreating was attempted twice by GW most significantly during the firestorm campaign era tying rules to colour schemes and specific models. Community rejectsd it pretty hard and has remained pretty encouraging of custom kit bashong and proxying. So while the story continuong to advance killing off factions and characters to set up new releases no one really pushes back on using 1 mini to represent a warscroll with a older kit, so things like armour changes due to Belakors storm or Military Reforms in the Cities might frustrate but if there is a warscroll it could represent people can use what they want.We got bout 4 clubs around me with 20-50 players for AoS and everyone bounces around trying new models and factions as a result being creative with things from Khornecast, Pirate trolls and Bretonnian Cities. So models keep selling and people keep hyping projects that catch their eye when soemthing is released. So if the 40k market will just buy space marines no matter what and there is push back for being creative (like when Tau came out or Primaris) why would GW put creative resources towards 40k?
40k xan have creative design just look at Necrumunda

Maybe a hot take but I think anyone who is painting commissions professionally should buy and learn to use an airbrush if they value their time/income.
I understand space restrictions but the time you save with the airbrush can be immense. I can’t imagine tackling a larger model commission with brushes alone.

My number one way to manage my collection, is to sell the mini's I don't want/like/value anymore. I collect mini's and am happy to own some I will never paint, but only if I love the look of them. What helped me recently is too build (not glue) them so I can have them in hand. Easier with push to fit than multipart, but still possible. There are no amount of pictures or even videos that can help me evaluate the sculpt as well as seeing it in real life.

Primaris are better... other than the relative lack of helmet variation. We don't have enough beaky boys, ultramarines with roman plumes and similar nonsense.
I am also not sold on the jet packpack, for what it does to the silouette: In many angles, it makes them look fat. But redesigning just that bit across chapters until they find a winner shouldn't be that hard.

I don’t think AoS has better sculpts due to the age of the system I think it’s the foundations of how they’ve built it. They’ve moved into the realm of high fantasy and removed old limitations that would have existed if they’d stayed under the umbrella of The Old World. New lore, minis and progression in the storyline each year avoids the stagnation that it feels like 40k are stuck in. I think it will remain this way until 40k are ready to do something similar and theoretically say okay we’re moving into 41k and going to start branching out for all factions and new ones.

The Primaris armor being less ornamental must be a consequence of they are _new_ armor as compared to the old sets of armor that often is thousands of years old that was used by the First Born. Naturally, there's less general ornamentation, less purity seals, fewer candles, wolf's teeth and blood drops, less chapter specifik stuff, fewer artificer helmets, less heretical ritualistic symbolism, fewer winged backpacks, etc.

    • @jorgemontero6384

We have this in chaos: Nobody would confuse a model for a Plague Marine, a Rubric, an Eighbound or a Night Lord, even in plain grey.
In AOS though the problem is minimal in-faction variation. I cannot tell the different units of fyreslayers at a distance, because they all look like the same model. Ossiarchs? More homogeneous than ultramarines.
The real problem with 40k is not variation(where sure, you have to leave loyalist marines behind at times) , but that some units really look pretty bad. Some pretty iffy things are getting through the pipeline, for hard to understand reasons. One can complain that Lemartes is different than before, but it's a beautiful miniature. But Coteaz is hard to defend, ignoring the old mini. The situation with the Custodes sheld captain. You don't need a great art director to realize those are substandard.

    • @jamesd.980
      @jamesd.980 8 днів тому +1

Have to call you out for being slightly disingenuous with your complaints about AoS not having variety. You literally picked the two worst armies in the game as your flagship examples. Even Fyreslayers players will admit that their army sucks because it only consists of two types of unit: Half-naked Manbaby with Axe, or Half-naked Manbaby with Axe riding a Magma Lizard. Ossiarch Bonereapers are designed to be “Undead Rome” so yes there’s a level of uniformity within the army.
Not-so-coincidentally, both of these armies have received only one major release wave, compared to almost all of the other armies in the game, which have received more than one release wave and are incredibly visually diverse even within the faction.
The Sylvaneth range includes angry tree people , giant angry tree people , dragonfly-winged dryad archers, insect-riding tree spirit cavalry, and centerpiece models like Alarielle the Everqueen, an elf-goddess who rides a giant rhino beetle and who cut her hand off to turn into her literal right-hand woman.
Daughters of Khaine are all murderhobo girls, but they range from bog-standard Witch Elves to full-blown harpies and snake-women.
Soulblight Gravelords consist of stereotypical Count Dracula vampires, vampires who have turned half-beast from their curse overwhelming them, and vampires who are actually werewolves. That’s not to mention all the spooky, bump-in-the-night things that fill out the army like zombies, skeletons, wolves, bats, and so on.
The Kharadron Overlords are steampunk Sky Dwarves who are literally the only army in the game to use vehicles, their airships.
I’ll not go into all the various armies, as that will make an already long comment far too long. I’ll summarize with this. There is a vast diversity of models within Age Of Sigmar armies, and I think you do some of GW’s best sculptors a disservice by ignoring that and choosing to use the two armies widely acknowledged as the worst visually as your only examples.
Lack of variety within an army is hardly an issue in AoS.

Honestly, I think the blood angels were just trying to make them look like something they aren't. Yes, they have angels in their name, but that massive power armor doesn't really go well with Lutheran depictions, and it looks awkward when you try. Be like performing Shakespeare in full plate. You'd probably drown out any story in just how weird it looks. Also I think 40k could take from. AoS in their use of effects. It they really wanted to drop the wings they would have made the jetwash look like wings. Something like victory gundam. The wing flaps really do just kindof seem like almost a joke reference.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

It totally depends on what you’re trying to do and what paint you’re using. Much like the question “how much water do I add to thin my paint?” it totally depends… the glaze medium is just there to thicken the glaze so it doesn’t have the horrible surface tension of water. I’d advise you dilute the glaze to roughly 80% of how thin you’d like it to be and then gradually add the glaze medium to do the rest.
Sometimes you’re going to want a thicker glaze sometimes an almost transparent. I advise you experiment yourself as much as possible or do tests to understand how it works
      Hope that helps!

To George's point at the end of the pod.. That the models will still be there if you don't buy them.. I actually wish that were true.. But in fact, it's not. GW has had lots of production issues, and many many options sit out of stock for years. Kill Team kits vanish and never return. Maybe so main line Space Marines will always b there, but lots of GW product gets a single run and then who knows. I wish what he said was actually true in practice.. Then there would be far less fomo buying.. But the scarcity seems to be part of the plan that's working for GW

So, I don't think the artwork and the lore is as restrictive as made out. In GW the artwork and lore will follow a model, not just the other way around. GW have shown that they can knock it out of the park for GW models: the Lion, Abbadon & the avatar being chief amoungst them.
I do feel that the AoS team take more reactive risks, mixing up poses, levels of detail etc. They also do a better example of being able to add to the model rather than take away (in the case of most 40K stuff now).

  • @artycharr

I think it depends on what you mean by "better." Older miniatures from 40k and Fantasy don't have so much detail to work on. If you have a busy life and can only carve out a few hours a week to paint then having an army where every foot solider has loads of intricate detail to paint isn't better.

AoS needs the extra help. 40K will still sell gangbusters numbers.
It’s very evident the reduction in effort of the kits when you look at the new Death Co and Sang Guard packages. A lack of bits options, reduced detail, very similar posing to other kits, lack of build options (adds to the poses options) and just generally the far fewer flourishes that you see on Sigmar kits.
It’s really stark when you compare the Sanguinor to the latest StormCast Prosecutor character model.

AoS 4.0 isn't going to be this hyped past 2024. I think 40k players are trying it because nothing new is releasing for 40k until January.
I think most people prefer the aesthetics of AoS because of the fantasy aesthetic. I myself prefer fantasy over scifi from an aesthetic perspective. Nothing cooler than dragons, gryphons, and centaurs and other than the organic races the non-organic armies are just never going to look as cool. The best looking SM is The Lion but he's nowhere near as badass looking as even some of the lesser heroes in AoS.
People think the AoS designers are better. I just think they have the better canvas

AoS is absolutely going to be hyped beyond 2024. How’d you draw that conclusion?

AoS isn’t “new” it’s been around since 2015 and has evolved from a game with zero direction to now a very good system and actually improved the lore. There is so much more coming down the pipeline for AoS, maybe stop the Old Guard mentality and move on.

@@patton631 lol. 4.0 is new. And like the 3 editions prior the major content creators will be hyped over it for about 3 or 4 months and then slowly they will go back to focusing on 40k. It's happened this way since 1st edition. It'll happen this way again.
You'll see the occasional AoS stream but it's not going to be anywhere near as often as it is now.
      You'll see.

Aesthetically awful, setting pap. Double turn no thanks. Apart from that it has potential.
