I've heard this before but, I really liked your spin on the video (Also yes it's true, I'm sorry papa Noot, I'm mostly here for 40k, I like chainswords and and lazers, it's the way I am)
As someone who was given the 40k starter set in the mid 90s.... The Space Marines were always my favourite. I remember visiting a store for the first time and learning the rules and buying The paints and slowing working on my first gray pile of shame. I still have my original ones and the books, which was great as it explained all the different chapters and factions. They do need to make more video games to grab the younger generations and as we've seen with the Space Marine 2 game. They'll always be the draw for GW. Great video!
Okay , i have to say , your channel is amazing , every video top notch , your editing is incredible, the fact you are so small realtive to your quailty is an utter crime ( and man be careful not to box yourself in , make what you want ! We will be here to watch :) )
My introduction to Warhammer was Total War: Warhammer II and now I am obsessed with the Fantasy/Old World and Age of Sigmar settings. Warhammer 40,000 has never really done it for me but more recently I have found things to appreciate about it too.
It really is. As much as I want to see more of them fleshed out, it’s great that there’s more and more options for styles of play and overall design for people in the hobby
I owned and read several of the classic choose-your-own- adventure Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks. Years later, I stumbled across the Space Hulk game, and I fell in love all over again. From fantasy to 40K, Ian and Steve (and Bryan) gave the world of hobbyists enough to last us until the year 40K... Thank you so much for this video. There is nothing sweeter than the comfy familiar taste of nostalgia...
i think you have done an amazing video that covers something most fans wonder but do not know much about. Earneda like, a new subscriber and a share with my mates!
These guys are LEGENDS!!! Fighting Fantasy books were a big part of mine and my friends childhood. At a simple request to their office, both Sir Ian Livingston and Steve Jackson signed a copy of Return to Firetop Mountain as a Birthday present for my friend. It made a 34 year old man cry
Great video, thanks! The Fury of Dracula Curse of the Mummy's Tomb Dungeon Quest Warlock of Firetop Mountain Talisman Dark Future Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 40K Space Hulk Heroquest Owned them all, loved them all. Along with all (and I mean ALL) of the Fighting Fantasy books!
This deserves more views as there is nothing about the origins of GW on UA-cam... I think this video will keep on growing as 40k is going to pop very soon
That’s wild I live in the northeast of the US and I got the same book. Maybe even for the same reason. When I was growing up there was this store called job lot that sold overstock items really cheap and you never really knew what you might find in there….for a few months in the early 90’s there were all sorts of gaming supplements and books that came through and caused a rpg boom in my small town. Also on a completely unrelated note, my most recent ex wife was from Sao Paulo. Small world 😅😂
I just read the book covering TSR's history. Thank the gods they didn't sell GW to them and they avoided that shitshow. Say what you will about GW I'd still not like them to be owned by WOTC/Hasbro.
TSR were a great content creator in the 80's and early 90's pumping out a lot of good videogames (particularly in partnership with SSI) as well as the best D&D supplements and settings that players still wish were revived today (none of WOTC settings has been as memorable), quality definitely declined after they were acquired by Wizards of the Coast who had a similar corporate greed and lawyer fetish as Disney.
I became a Warhammer fan in the mid-90's. I was always captivated by older Warhammer from the WHFRP book and WD back issues, but I missed the beginning. Still, I'm grateful I was there for most of it and my collection is bigger than it's ever been.
I’ve always wanted to know this. I’m not a War Hammer fan, never played it, read a book or ever wanted to. I work with a huge group of WH fan boys, so it’s good to know about their interest. Thank you
Great video, thank you! It'll be interesting to see a similair video about Rackham Miniatures, and their two awesome games: Confrontation and AT-43. And about Corvus Beli.
I’ve been getting a lot more into 40k recently and this was a really rad video that was super educational and definitely made me want to explore some older iterations of the game/world!
Firstly great video, British mispronunciations aside it's well researched and presented. I find it interesting that you mention the video game crash, everything I've read suggests it had little to no effect on the UK, which had a pretty thriving home computer industry well into the early to mid 90s. Obviously you've done your research and the man's book itself seems to acknowledge it but I would suggest that they survived the crash because most a British gaming companies did.
subbed. looking forward to your next. yeah, it's been done before - every decade or so in whatever medium is popular; but that doesn't make it either moot or not worth it. liked your style...
Something I think that my phone is reading my mind. Because I have been wondering about this. Keeping me up at night. Dreaming. How did Warhammer, not the lore, but GW came to be.
I think the Primaris thing is really understandable when you looked at the other lines, everything was getting larger and suddenly the supposedly giant Marines were actually looking pretty small on the tabletop. They needed a rescale.
You mentioned Jervice Johnson but you failed to mention the game that has produced both World Cup and Euro Cup tournaments and of course I am talking about Blood Bowl 🏈
Ha ha. You did good dude. As much that’s been going on. I stick to the 5th edition 40k. And 4th/5th edition Fantasy. But I started a Army for Old World. Just to give it a go. Have yet to get the rule book. (Still have not put together my Army.) Anywhooo. Props to you. Just shared it on FB. (Have some of the blokes from GW on there that I’m sure enjoyed it.
Only just started watching, but FML it's weird. I went to the same school many years later (started early 90's). So, "Altrincham" is pronounced "Alltringam", maybe "Oltringam" depending on whether you're from Bowden or Sale (joke for the locals, there). "Cheshire" would be "Cheshuh" (bit like the end syllable of Worcester). Interestingly, one of their 1st FF novels (Island of the Lizard King) is dedicated to a guy who was deputy head when I was a student there who taught Geography: I believe he taught Ian Livingstone directly. There's a few other famous (and infamous) students and teachers who were there too.
How did you Miss Warhammer Dark Omen? It was the game that got me into Warhammer. I got the Hordes of chaos Rulebook without knowing what it was and the cover alone live rentfree in my head. I also got many games like Mark of Chaos or even Warhammer online. 5 Years ago a started a WArhammer RPG group, have over 200 Minis and never played a round of "normal" Warhammer xD
For me it was Rites of War as the definitive 40k videogame. Shadow of the Horned Rat was pretty good though. Final Liberation was significant at the time (though it didnt hold up over time as the others did) but its gameplay was pretty much recreated by the 40,000: Armageddon and its numerous DLC's resulting in probably the most tabletop models ever playable in a single videogame. Sanctus Reach was also a great recreation of the tabletop experience in a videogame with proper army points selection, I was a bit disappointed by its sequel Battlesector narrower scope and lack of campaigns.
@@watcherzero5256 Ohhh did not know that there is a game before Battlesector. Got it 2 weeks ago and thought it would be a good way to learn way of playing a tabletop match.
Noot accidentally becoming a warhammer channel is hilarious
it really was an accident man idk how it happened

Criminally underrated channel, your work is appreciated man

much appreciated! but ay it's all good, I'm the same way i be watching warhammer videos daily hahah
This video made me realize that yes, indeed i haven't seen a video on the making of warhammer stuff, it's always videos related to lore or games.
Same. I’ve watched a lot of content but no one ever talks about this.
Great video. Didn't know GW was at first a magazine and distribution company.
ayy thanks man! and yeah me neither, never really even questioned where they got their start tbh

I'm a warhammer fantasy player, not a 40k one, but Dan abnetts book series called Gaunts Ghosts is by far my favorite reads ever!
It’s crazy how the number of new and “new” factions coming out has soared in the past few years.
It really is. As much as I want to see more of them fleshed out, it’s great that there’s more and more options for styles of play and overall design for people in the hobby
It’s such a shame really

I haven't actually seen anyone cover their origins in detail so this'll be good!

The year is 1985, I was a kid in Brazil. I don't remember how, but I got a book, City of Thieves, by Ian Livingstone. I was amazed by that!
That’s wild I live in the northeast of the US and I got the same book. Maybe even for the same reason. I just read the book covering TSR's history. Thank the gods they didn't sell GW to them and they avoided that shitshow. Say what you will about GW I'd still not like them to be owned by WOTC/Hasbro.
both are definitely terrible in their own right but yeah WOTC and Hasbro are their whole own sh*t show lmao
If they were owned by they'd probably have stayed as a DnD mini maker and Warhammer would not exist
You becoming a Warhammer channel is hilarious. But if I’m gonna be honest, that’s the reason I found your channel😂

I got into it in second edition. I bought Wh 40k the day it came out. Happy times man.
You left out the release of the grey Knights.
Over then that you were pretty spot on to be honest man.
