Him and the baritone sax always gets overlooked in my opinion. Even in traditional bands. Everyone focuses on the more obvious sounds but they don't realize, without that bass and background, the song wouldn't be well rounded and sound like garbage. Long live us bass players!

Honestly I have to disagree. She has zero elements of Layne or Maynard. I actually thought this was one of her weakest performances vocally that I've seen yet. Even the overproduction/editing can't help it. You can tell it's pretty heavily edited and autotuned. 3/10.
Sophia is without a doubt the best vocalist that plays with Brass Against. She has that perfect mix of grunge and dynamic that I love. Also, choosing Rooster is a really cool choice because the song is so subtle, with equal amounts of quiet and loud, and the way they are able to tone down the normally bombastic levels during the quiet moments was great.
Doing Layne Staley vocals is just challenging. There are times when he is using minimal power but producing massive sound. And a posture about his voice. But Sophia just masters and handles all of those challenges well. Impressive work as always.
Yeah but she still emulates his singing style very well! But Layne's is just so distintive, i personally can't get it out of my head while listening to this. Still, thumbs up!
Layne layered the heck out of his plus harmonizing with Jerry Cantrell. To get true Layne, you'll have to listen to Mad Season which used less effects with mastering.

The vocal layers in the chorus gave me chills. The trumpets carrying a countermelody in the verse. All the parts blending seamlessly. I could keep pointing out the brilliance, but I will just say - beautifully done.
@no privacy I'm 100% certain that Layne's voice on the original recording was also buried in effects. There's no way you distort your guitars that much and leave the vocals clean. Moreover, they also mixed a lot of voice layers for harmonics.

Last week I saw a trailer for the Layne Staley documentary that is coming out next year. I then procceed to listen to a lot of Alice in Chains throughout the week and then you guys release this incredible cover. What is going on?!
What a beautiful voice! Wow!!! RIP Layne and Mike...the music will always live on and inspire others....truly a beautiful rendition, thank you so much for sharing your talents....thank you!
I may just be a 57-year old victim of the lost 70s, the arrogant 80s and the youth anguish of the 90’s, but I hah of the 90’s, but I have nonetheless discovered a sophisticated appreciation for the sounds these kids have discovered. It is a sound that is both brazen and nuanced.. confrontational but soft edged.. aggressive but merciful. This band has discovered the dried out skeletons of blues based rock, dusted them off with sensational horns and winds, and then reshaped them with stunningly powerful vocals, with bold arrangements and innovative presentation. Yes, this old “classic” believes strongly in where this band is headed. Oh and by the way, why the big deal about Sophie’s “stage antics”? When I was your age, we recognized such performances as artful depictions of momentary “creative orgasms”, and NOT what many of the more hypocritical people have loudly called “offensive”and “degrading.” Listen people! We WANT artists to push the limits. That’s what they do. And little things like the Renaissance, The Industrial revolution of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, even the social and cultural events of the 60s all marched forward in step with revolutionaries who pushed boundaries. Well done, Brass Against. I really dig who you are. I’m in.
