Vietnam, 70, 71, 72, in the delta. Survived two cancers, bladder, right lung, hearing loss (M-60), PTSD, and so on. My life has never been the same. VA is keeping me ticking. I never considered myself a rooster but this song helps lift me up at times. Never saw this video before tonight. Thankful.
Brother in law was Brown Water Navy, multiple tours, retired Chief Warrant, died of cancer- Agent Orange... I was USNR, 67', 68', piece of 69'... Sealion. No glory here for me, but so many in our gen experienced much glory. In college, UofF, Gainesville, I hooked up with a 2 Bronze and a Silver Star awarded Army Sgt., whose father was a retired Col., who flew B-29's in WWII and Korea. We sat at Tiger Hall, in 70' and watched SDS take over the Admin. Bldg, as thousands Marched at night with lit candles. The war protests. He was among those used for bait to draw out enemy contact. He experienced Tet, 68'. That's about all he ever said about it and I never asked either. He was a poster child for PTSD. HARD to believe, it was so long ago, but every war since, has ended the same, but the cost of admission was never cheap.
As someone who struggles with PTSD (shell shock) for different reasons. My hat is off to you for overcoming such great odds, thank you for your service and I did try to join, they just weren't taking high school dropouts during the Gulf war ironically enough.
Fuck that Hall of Fame bullshit. My hall of fame is in my brain, and l know who is in it. You have your own too. THAT is what matters. Usually anything that gets widespread approval sucks or is a joke like Kiss or The Ramones.
My step grandfather somehow survived the first wave on omaha beach without a scratch. He was later hit twice during the battle of the bulge. Every now and then if he got some wine in him he would make a general statement about the war but wouldn't give details saying it was "too bloody". He went to see saving private ryan by himself after hearing how realistic it was. All he said about it was he cried the whole time thinking about his buddies getting mowed down on that beach and that while it was probably the most accurate movie he ever saw, reality was much much worse. No one should experience even once what these combat soldiers faced on a daily basis yet humanity still finds ways to get into wars. Miss you Papa Tony.
as a product of the ww2 generation i concur. i lived in s. fl for a long time. i was with the gov. i ran into countless vets from the usa and germany. it didnt matter which side u were on the stories i heard were brutal. the most brutal was a former waffen ss guy who served at the russian front. it was ancient hatred from both sides. i have forgotten about these brave men from both sides who did what they had to do. thanks for making me remember what none of us should forget.
My father was 101st Airbourne. He was a sergeant very fast. He was in the bush the majority of time while in Nam. He never talked about it. He was a total badass and much tougher than me. He never talked about it, but it affected him the rest of his life. He died with a long list of problems. RIP dad.
Sounds like his subconscious knew it wasnt right and he was only furthering the tyrannical over reach of the zyonisst (purposefully misspelled) occupied American Government which stands in stark opposition against any and all free men world wide. Your dads generation didnt know though. They were naive, and we are paying the price dearly today for their naivety
This was written for Jerry Cantrell's dad. This is what he had to say about it: "Yeah. He's heard this song. He's only seen us play once, and I played this song for him when we were in this club opening for Iggy Pop. I'll never forget it. He was standing in the back and he heard all the words and stuff. Of course, I was never in Vietnam and he won't talk about it, but when I wrote this it felt right...like these were things he might have felt or thought. And I remember when we played it he was back by the soundboard and I could see him. He was back there with his big gray Stetson and his cowboy boots - he's a total Oklahoma man - and at the end, he took his hat off and just held it in the air. And he was crying the whole time. This song means a lot to me. A lot."
420jeremy I'm 53 yr. this video, song, the story it tells is powerful. I myself was too young during that era but footage on TV then had me scared. God bless everyone effected by that or any war.
My Dad did two tours in Vietnam. Got hooked on the morphine they carried. Came back an addict, alcoholic. He struggled for years to keep it together. 4 heart attacks later I buried him in '91. This song brings his duties and the pain to life. Now I too struggle with the same addiction having been 7 years clean this song is larger than life.
I commend your sharing and sobriety. As a son of a Vietnam vet, I have to ask if you've read the novel, Matterhorn? Highly recommend to anyone, especially those that lived with fathers who experienced the horror of combat. Best regards.
Bless his heart❤ that's so sad. I just can't even imagine what they went thru, I guess it's the closes thing to hell could have been. I've noticed one thing, the men that brag about being over there and act like it was nothing, I figured their hardest job was peeling potatoes or just lying! Men that were in the midst of that hell on Earth will not speak of it, and if they do, you can tell that it's messed them up forever. When he's talking in the first part of the video, it like somebody is squeezing my heart.😞
My grandpa was in Vietnam he lost both of his legs up to his hips and was in a wheelchair all his life. He would cry whenever he would see or hear any war movies or music. My mom told me of an incident that happened when she was young he freaked out one day during dinner at the table. He threw a glass and plate at my grandmother and took a knife and jumped out of his chair and started crawling away with the knife in his hand thinking they were suicide bombers. He passed away last year but he was never the same and never told me or my mom about it and only told a few details to my grandmother about what happened over their. Rest in peace Bobby hassell you are forever missed and loved. 🖤🖤🖤🖤
Very sorry to hear that. My grandpa shot himself last year and also served in Vietnam. He was a river rat and the war really messed him up and took many drugs and one day just snapped. ❤️ stay safe and keep positive.
A salute to your Grandfather and family and the sacrifice they had to bear for his service. My father was a Vietnam vet, just turned 70 last week, for the most part he’s not bothered by it, but one time I seen him back into a wall and cover both of his ears out of nowhere and when we asked what was wrong he said he was hearing the screams of his friends dying all those decades ago.
Its a shame what happened with Vietnam war for both sides. Innocent young men getting drafted for no reason and thrown in to die and kill for stupid politics, while politicians drink expensive shit in their several million mansions and watch satellite transmissions like its some stupid game. Whats more sad is that it is still going on today.
For those who don’t know: The M60 machine gun had a muzzle flash that resembled a roosters tail. Machine gunners in Vietnam were referred to as “roosters”. From the start of a gunfight, machine gunners life spans were about 7 seconds in Vietnam…To this day, this song is an anthem in the Marine Corps. Every Marine infantryman has sat in the barracks with 10 of his friends drinking and singing this song together. I know because I was(still am) one of those guys. Semper fi.
Being an 0331, one of the Corporals has me learn this song word for word. I've heard it so many times before the Corps but never got the meaning. While I learned the words and the meaning, it made me realize how beautiful this song is. Either way infantry loves this song. Semper Fi
@@R3AP3R_IAM I understand this song as a testament to the courage and tenacity of our warriors on THEIR land. The Americans lost the heart for the fight, just like the French. We gave ‘em the hell they were seeking. Got ‘em by their roosters. They will never touch our land with poisoned chemicals again.
My dad actually told me the meaning of this song a while back, just listened to it because I wanted to and it seems he told me correctly what it's about judging by the comments. But this song now reminds me of an experience I had when I met a Vietnam war vet walking through this little park (which me and friends skateboard at) to get to this store near by. He asked which way the particular store he wanted to go was. I directed him but before he started to walk away I noticed he had a hat on saying Vietnam war veteran or something and that's when I said "thank you for your service" and the old man was very appreciative that I said that because he told me after that he didn't used to and still never has been thanked too much for fighting in Vietnam. He explained that when him and his buddies got home they were called baby killers and people hated them for fighting there. Now this song with that particular lyric "they spit on me in my homeland" always reminds me of that man I met that day
My dad got out in 73, near the end. They say to face your nightmares, sometimes its never worth it. He'll share some stories of the 'good times' he had there, but the rest is locked way back in his mind, reliving those memories are not a positive thing.
"military men are dumb stupid animals, to be used as pawns in foreign policy" - Henry Kissinger ; the entire Vietnam war, was based on the fake Gulf of Tonkin incident. Your government hates you; Vietnam is still a communist country. And the government tested chemical agents on their own troops. the only President to not create new wars for profit; Donald Trump. Vote hard.
Not a Vietnam veteran, but this was my theme song when I was fighting my cancer. ‘They’ was cancer and I wasn’t gonna die. This inspired me to fight and likely helped save my life. Thank you.
cancer is a war of it's own. and lethal. I wish you the best. keep your head up, brother. and when the reaper does come some day, you fought it every step of the way. 💙 (i have depression and it's taken lives itself, (lost a friend to un-aliving-self) I fight my demons as well.) Never give up. always get back up. it's hard. but I do it. the alternative is worse. always have courage. I was hurt by his death enough it made me hate un-aliving even more. your friends need you, mine need me.

I dont know how anyone can watch and hear this without getting tears and having your heart beat out your chest. What a powerful song Jerry wrote for his dad.
To me, this is one of the most incredible songs ever written. It speaks to one of the ugliest periods of our country's history, yet honors the courage and dedication of those who fought in this war. It's also about a son's love and respect for his father, and is his way of honoring him. And on top of all of that, it's just a kickass jam, that I never get tired of listening to.
I was a child during this war. I remember watching about it on the news and thinking why were we there. Wishing the soldiers would just come back. One of my friends father was so messed up from having been there. It was so sad. We had to stay away from him. I hear this song and think about him
One of the ugliest for sure, it's shocking I didn't even really listen to the lyrics that close until the past year or three. Vietnam was some brutal shit, and it gave us some broken men. Shameful stuff all around in that "war".
My father was 101st Airborne from about 1954-1967. KIA at 31 years old. I've spent my Life (37 years with Department of Defense) serving my country. My dad will be forever young to me and I'm 60. Vietnam may have been a mistake for us to get involved in, but show some thanks and sympathy for the guys who served. More Vietnam vets died by the mid 1990's than actually died in the war itself. Booze, drugs, suicide and car "accidents". That stinking war stole a LOT more than my father. It destroyed a million American families and several million Vietnamese families. Let's try to make Peace with our bloody past. Please...
Thank you for your families service and may your father forever RIP. I come from a very long line of Marines myself. My father was at Iwo Jima in WWII and I lost an Uncle in Nam and my two older brothers both fought in Nam. It was a huge mistake, but the brave still served their country.
Fact the level of war that society takes upon itself and the level of potential society holds will always be in direct opposition to one another. Sounds like your mother as one of our communities daughters understood this concept about as well as any civilian ever could.
My dad was in Vietnam and he still has flashbacks. He will go away for days at a time and then he comes home just fine. I can only imagine what he saw. He's never talked about it
Iv heard some things from my grandpa and the shits unimaginable. Try to imagine picking up peices of ur friend and mailing them back and I'm not talking about arms and legs those are obliterated she shit they saw and had to do would fuck up anyone
Its hard to imagine what they saw and been through. Going through each day not knowing if it was the last. So many lost their lives and those who came home didnt come home the same.
I missed vietnam by a year or so. I knew many whose older brothers went. Dad was a ww2 combat vet. They never want to talk about it cause they do not want to remember the pain and death of their friends. women like to talk about their feelings. would you want to talk about holding a dear friend in your arms as they bleed to death and there is nothing you can do? I could always tell who served in combat while I was in the army, they never wanted to be friends with anyone or talk much and the distant stare. Horrible.
My Dad was at the Siege of Khe Sanh, he was a Navy Corpsman with the 3rd Marine Div. Told me stories that I will never forget. God Bless our Vietnam Veterans🙏
This song always makes me think about my father, who made it through five years of WW2 (Canadian, started in 1940 after the Brits started in 1939), mostly in France and Italy. I was told that when he got home he gave away his hunting rifles and fishing equipment; he wouldn't even kill a fly or mosquito after that, he just swished them away. He was a good father for someone so hurt psychologically by the insanity of war; he said war is a hell no one should be subjected to.
my great grandfather never talked about his service in ww2, but whenever his son (my grandfather) would ask him to go hunting he refused. apparently he would always say “i did all my hunting in germany. i don’t need to do anymore.”
My dad's best friend did the same after returning from the war in the Pacific. He had an amazing collection of historic guns, but got rid of them all and started collecting arrowheads. Died of alcoholism, and the cause didn't hit me until after the Vietnam war. RIP Bud Carpenter.
My first tour in Iraq in 05 we were jamming out to this song doing weapons maintenance on our trucks. A civilian contractor wandered over and like us he was an Infantry Marine who volunteered for 2 tours in Nam. He didn't say too much about it but when he left he shook each of our hands and said he was grateful for our service and sacrifice. I said we should be thanking him for his service and I remember his choked up response was "Service for what?". 2 trips in Iraq and 6+ years in Afghanistan and after August 15th I know exactly what he meant. For what?
Regardless of how bad politicians screw things up and screw yall over remember this. We, the American people, support and appreciate all that all of you do. It may seem meaningless to you but it means everything to us. Thank you all.
Sometimes, you just need some Alice in Chains. 2021 and their music still brings it. EDITs: **2022 and still nothing comes close. **2023 is here and "the rooster" still can't be stopped. **2024! YEZ!
It truly is incredible how you pop this on and its like brand new on the ears. Aged like fine wine and now unlike in the 90's we got a comment section to give its respect. Love it!
My dad died in Vietnam. I never really thought about anything tangible because you know he died when I was 6 months old. I knew he had to be afraid. He was just a country kid 19 years old and I knew he had to miss home who was from such a small town. I never really realized the bullet stream from somewhere... How can you fight a war on your inconstant fight or flight mode and are not able to really think about what you're doing. You're just trying to survive. This song brought it all to me and made it so real, I can't watch the video. I never have been able to

I'm embarrassed to admit, I liked this song for years before I listened closely enough to realize what it's about and really appreciate its brilliance.
To everyone out there touched by any war..You know how I feel. I was age 19 in Nam, killing as my job. I am 65 now and the nightmares of Nam will never die. God Bless all of you brothers and sisters out there. I feel for all of you people.
ratter531 I remember watching the 6:00 news back in 1969 ,and asking my dad if I had to go fight in the war ,I was 7 years old at that time ,never forget, thank you for your service
The title comes from guitarist/songwriter Jerry Cantrell's father. "Rooster" was his nickname in Vietnam, where he fought in the war. The song is about some of his feelings and experiences, told from his perspective. >> Jerry's father is in the video and speaks about his war experience. The look on Jerry's face shows how the memories of his father at war when he was young is touching. >>
Spot On! Too many people don't know the factual story re: the meaning behind the song: in the late(ish) 90s sooooo many people thought the song was about a real sniper.
Bottom line. Protect what you have. In any life. Someone wants to take what you have for any reason. I realize these lyrics as a reference to self preservation.
I’m an Aussie Afghanistan vet (combat engineer 1CER), my father is a Vietnam vet (infantry 6RAR) and this song/film clip gets it better than any high budgeted Hollywood version.
terry b Thank you for your service ! I'm an American Marine and after three years I got my my own unit , the guys in my unit called me killer ! On day I decide to ask them why you guys call me killer ? MY DADDY WENT...HE VOLUNTEERED FOR NAM.HE SAID SO HIS KIDS AND THE REST OF HIS FAMILY DIDN'T HAVE TO. I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU MORE EVERY DAY DAD.GOD BLESS YOU , UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
Can you believe its been 20 years since Layne died? It’s still unreal he died, he was one of the greatest vocalists of all the time. R.I.P. Layne, you will never be forgotten.
This song meant a great deal to many- I made my dad a cd with this song on it because he was a Vietnam war vet (he was a medic and a sniper)- I was his little girl but throughout my life we always remained close- there wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t see or talk with him. I explained the song to him and he loved it. My dad was humble, strong and had grit like I’ve not seen since- he was a rock to our whole family and put his needs last. He past away this last year but as I sat with him in the hospital, I put my phone up to his ear and played all his favorite songs - this being one of them. He smiled and I’d just held his hand and keep whispering- hang in there solider, hang in there... missing you dad
What can I say? Your father was strong and so are you. Sometimes music is mightier than the sharpest of words. Hence I leave it all here for you to listen to Layne's amazing voice. For my words won't do you or your late father justice. My condolences ma'am.
Chills? not so much. A strange remembrance and connection with my pops, and growing up noticing certain things related to this song. absolutely... My old man was there. And we have a strong bond, we both love this song. Its a good feeling.

Uncle was Marine recon, perfume river in Nam. Never spoke about it but now in his 70s he still can't sleep through the night, he left Nam but it never left him. God bless all our men and woman who serve .
This is meant to be a compliment, I swear. Alice in Chains is a blues band playing metal. Imagine Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, or Howlin Wolf singing this song and it would fit. Layne just amplifies that. It's awesome.
Howlin Wolf woulda made it faster and he woulda gone into that high pitch moaning in the chorus. Muddy Waters woulda made it a bit slower, with a really trippy electric guitar riff, and some really thick dry drums, singing with that bassy-throaty style. It would be very spiritual. John Lee Hooker woulda made it stripped down, just him and an electric, maybe some clapping, and he would throw in these little improvised licks all over, and the rhythm would be totally unique, something unreplicate. JLH woulda fucked with the melody a lot, with a clean low voice tone.
Would've been great to hear any of those Blues Greats do this one but in my opinion none of them wouldn't have put much power into this song as much as Layne did this one's still his absolute best vocal performance
My great uncle fought for the North in MY country Vietnam. Never bragged. Great patriot. What did your uncle accomplish in MY country? We fought his type off.
A lot of veterans who came home from Vietnam were treated quite terribly because of the popular opposition to the war back at home. It’s one of the biggest tragedies of the whole thing in my opinion
Absolutely a sad reality for not only Veterans but Native Americans. Very hurtful can't imagine coming home from an ugly bloody war and your treated like that from your fellow Americans ppl u were standing up for.
Sorry but that honour has to go to blixa bargeld in my opinion. Check out the end of stagger lee by nick cave and the bad seeds to hear what I mean. Or any of his industrial shit with eisturzende nuebatent. Man he can wail
By what measure? It makes no sense to claim that ONE dude has the best scream in rock history. Staley wouldn't work in Purple Rain. Prince would certainly be misplaced in Rooster. Robert Plant, Blixa Bargeld, Marilyn Manson, Nina Hagen. Why the need for pinning a "best" on someone? I dont get it.
This was the only song of theirs that my grandfather actually listened to before he passed. It hit him personally he did three tours of Vietnam. He also mentioned how the song was so well written that it got every emotion that he felt.
My grandfather served a tour of duty during Korea. This was one of a few modern rock songs he actually could tolerate cause of what it's about. I know how your grandfather felt cause mine felt the same way.
This song means a lot to me my nickname in the Army was rooster because I was from Seattle and this song being a Seattle band. when I graduated training at Fort Knox Kentucky in 2005 I deployed two months later my father was also a Vietnam veteran he really didn't want me to enlist but I did it anyways. This song always gets me really emotional
My team was hit by an ied and I remember pulling security while Sgt was digging our cpl out of the crater with his bare hands and I had so much blood on my face I could hardly look thru my sights.
@tfs2O3 That's why this version was ghosted then, got that from some comments from ppl from this time, now you can't tune in MTV without flying booties on day time, this clip deserved as much TV time as Them Bones.
I am ukraine FootSoldier , I very much relate to this Song as I is Rooster , Russia is Evil Empire as Reagan Said , I Also Like Hotel California where they Say they Stabbed It with their Steely Knives but they Still Can't Kill The Beast ; ukraine & America ForEver ; I have 999 Lives
Used to sing this as a kid in kindergarten to myself quietly. Teacher heard me and called my mom . Sure as shit she showed up and told the school to drop the shit. Its good music and I wasn't hurting anything. I had a awesome mom. Miss you momma. RIP RIP Lane and the band for giving me the memory of her.
Was at this time I was deep in my addiction to heroin when I heard this song come out there was many years after the release of the song it helped me overcome my demons RIP Brother Layne
Dirt gets all the love but there’s not a single “bad” AIC song to me. Staley always sang with such conviction and the rest of band was always on fire. Discovering Mad Season in my 30’s was mind blowing. Most slept on rock album in history.
Sadly, Layne was for all intents and purposes gone in spirit after 1993. After that, his addiction swallowed him whole. The body just lasted another 9 years.
That is TRUE Adam, but EVERY Man that came home has ALL the Respect Too. They had no other choice. I am not talking about sylvester stallone either, as he ran away, but later played rambo in the movie. POS!
Today April 5th 2023 & it's been 21 years since we lost you Layne man, wish you were here to see how many of us love you & appreciate the beautiful music you've left us.Thank you Layne my brother ❤️
I used to be a drug addict and was messed up everyday. I got clean and have stayed clean for a long time now and I have to say Alice in Chains hits harder than anything I've done. Music fucking touches the Soul.
Agreed. Tell that to all the people hooked on Netflix shows, obsessing about serial killers. It all seems so laughable when you return from Afghanistan I'm sure.
I can safely say that this is one of the most badass songs I've ever heard. The first line, "they haven’t found a way to kill me yet," gives me shivers every time. The flowing guitar building up in the intro before the electric guitars break into a cascade of hard rock awesomeness. The vocals are incredible, the musicians know what they're doing. This song goes heavier than anything I've encountered. So much so that I had to write a comment about it on UA-cam.
The part that resonates with me is "they spit on me in my homeland..." I was in elementary school living in Hawaii after 3 years in Japan where my dad would go to Da Nang for months. Some little shit kid called my dad...MY DAD...a baby killer. I slapped him upside the head even though he was bigger than me LOL. Definitely the daughter of a naval aviator! What our military did was amazing and if and when they came home they went and still go through shit. It is horrible. To all military personnel AND also their families (families sometimes are forgotten and we went through our own hell of worry), YALL ARE FUCKING AWESOME!! And Thank you for everything you sacrificed and bless your hearts forever.
This song meant something else to me. When I was an addict being trafficked I would play this or Metallica fade to black before I would do anything. Not sure why but it helped me find a center in my own being. I had to go toe to toe a thousand times unnarmed with my apponate twice my size and be the one coming out ahead. Watching all my friends die around me and wishing God could take me too. Now I'm safe and doing what I can to help others but this music definitely sends me to a place.
@@lindavhm7669some vets think they did the right thing as a cope for the horror they committed. Other vets realise how they were used by the government and given no help by the government they were dieing for. Order followers are immoral no pride in that.
@@cornbread2418 I agree... No matter from where you are, and on which side you fought , every man who saw combat have the same look in their eyes. Something dark and hollow. So,i respect them all, even on enemy side. My father had one, God rest his soul. I wish the very best for all veterans,no matter where they are, keep it on soldiers.Sry for my bad English, its not my native language. Peace and be well
I have great love for my Father who died from PTSD in 2000 from his service in Vietnam. He suffered the humiliation of the shouts of baby killer at the Airport in San Francisco. When I came back home from Desert Storm there were 30 Vietnam Vets their to welcome me home at the Des Moines Airport. They paved the way for us and I will never stop thanking them for THEIR service.
I am 55 yo, I get this. Citizens of USA, see the news? It is gc. No one knows except front liners, medics, and the unit troops, who are taking care of their team. They keep moving...
I thought it was kinda corny when I was in the Marines that 3/2 had this as their battalion song but, learning more about Rooster’s story and the lore of 3/2 during the island hopping campaign in WWII, it’s actually extremely fitting and badass. Hearing this during battalion ceremonies was actually dope as hell.
The life lived, a loving son, masterful song writing, incredible vocals: this is what music is! Layne’s voice had the soul to convey the pain; Jerry had the background and talent to fuse this into one of the best songs in the last 40 years.
Instead of fighting a real war, Staley was struggling against his inner demons that finally defeated him. Sometimes your most powerful enemy is your own mind
My dad is a combat Vietnam veteran, survived two heart attacks, and is now succumbing to Alzheimer’s. We call him the Rooster because he keeps on fighting and it’s like he doesn’t know how to die. We know it’s coming, but this song has a special meaning to us.
This guy's voice is literally one of the most epic, haunting, ever. Perfect to sing straight into souls for generations to come of the horrors of "war" - Rich folks sending the poor to murder and die, to grab more wealth and acquisitions for them.
You don't know what the war was about then. Nothing was gained, not even for the Rich. Nobody got anything from the war in Vietnam, even when it ended, the victors lost even that. Don't be a fool, sometimes theirs no one pulling the strings, only mistakes.
Nobody wins war but one thing I learned I had to respect them we were in Thier back yard they fought for Thier family's each of us would if anybody came here in our back yard family comes firstamen
My grandfather was a machine gunner in Vietnam, he volunteered and did 2 tours, after he got back he never spoke about the war, but was heavily burdened by it, he passed away when I was 7, I wish I had more time with him
As a former member of the 82d and an Iraqi war vet, another meaningless war, this song always hits home. And I can't describe why to my friends. They just don't get it. But I'm glad they don't. We do it so they don't have to. Fantastic song and fantastic band.
Thank you for your service. I understand all war is pointless but its difficult to find the words for someone who has given so much of themselves...for what?...thankyou anyway. God bless.
Right now at 55 years old my belief is that my country the US has only fought 2 wars that were worth fighting. The American revolution and the American civil war. I served in west Germany on a tank 87 -89. Thankfully not in combat. This is a great song very honest!
Rest in Peace to my pops. Falsely documented hisself at 17 and battled his way through Vietnam on 2 tours. A great man. Did himself in, in 05. Greatly missed, but never forgotten.
RiP to your dad. My uncle did the same thing... had a flash back then fought with multiple police hung himself in jail 1984 cuz he didn't know what was going on. PTSD is no joking matter. fuck all the people that called them baby killers and spit on them when they returned home...
the last generation faked their age to fight in wars, kids these days get upset over getting pronouns wrong and by the word retard. forever grateful for his service
This song always has me thinking about my father [R.I.P]. He did 2 tours in Vietnam while serving in the Marine Corps. God Bless all of our veterans. "You know he ain't gonna die."
My grandfather was in Vietnam. My dad spoke to me about it a few days ago as we were in the car, just talking about current politics and wars. He said he never really spoke about what happened over there, and that silence says enough by itself. My grandparents got divorced because of the war, he went on to remarry and lives a very peaceful life. God bless our troops.
@@DelilaSloan Sad thing is more Military came back from Afghanistan and Iraq with PTSD, TBI-Traumatic Brain Injuries and lost Limbs then in Vietnam. I watch this over and over; After he says, "Let's hope noone else has to go through it - OK"... Probably not on purposes, but his micro-expressions are devastating.
Layne died 20 years ago today, I started getting into Alice in Chains last year and they are now personally one of my all time favorite bands and Layne one of my all time favorite singers. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, I wish you were still making music and making us smile.
This song helped explain what a neighbor was referring to when we'd talk, well, he talked, I listened, about his Vietnam war experiences. Later, when I told his wife where I'd heard the term Rooster, she was incredulous that he freely talked with me about the war that nearly killed him and emotionally scarred him into silence about it.
@@MoSportsUSA my dad was also a Rooster, during the Vietnam War. He used to talk to me, as I listened to him. At the time, I didn't understand some of the thing's that he used to talk about. I have a better understanding of what he would talk about, now that I am older. But, not all of it. I definitely understand enough about it, now, though. But, I heard about the way that they were treated, when they stepped back on American soil. And, he also told me about what Jane Fonda did to his military brother's over there, as well. So, I didn't get the sugarcoated and watered-down version, that so many lightly tread on talking about, either. I got the details, that were not mentioned on the TV, or in the classroom. Unfortunately, I am not able to go into the detail of it on here, or I will be banned from my account. Let's just say, that she is definitely one of the most hated people, of the military, at least those who were in the Vietnam War. And, rightfully so, as well. I can definitely say, that the look in his face and eye's changed, from the mear mention of her name. So, if you don't want to make a Vietnam War veteran mad at you? Definitely avoid bringing her up in the conversation, at all. He told me, that the closest movie, that reminded him of the experience of being over there, was the one with Charlie Sheen in it. I forget the name of it, at the moment. But, he said, that if I want to know what it was like over there? Watch the movie. I can definitely say, that it's not for the faint of heart, that is definitely sure...
@@MoSportsUSA also, my dad passed away, a little over 2 year's ago. He was an Army Ranger. He was also drafted in, as well. Even though, he was colorblind...
Hell yea man, Im vietnam vet been there done that, survive from dad to day was what it was, coming back to the states was just as hard, sleeping with one eye open, tip toeing around the house being as quiet as a mouse so I could hear a pin drop, being on your toes as they say, jump out of my skin when the neighbors kids slam a door or yell at each other. thunder and lighting is the worst for me and the rain that comes with it takes me back in time, I hate the nights and I hate going to bed because I know that any moment now all hell is going to break lose and then I'm in for the fight of my life, not really, but that is how my life is like today a vietnam vet. great song by the way!. sorry I got off on a rant.

Hey, greatest respect to You Brother. We didn't have the information back then, so I want to ask with all due respect (as much for everyone else who reads this as for myself); Why did you sign up? ... I mean personally, what did it mean to You in that time without all the historical context we have to it now? If you don't want to answer, that's fine, You are in my thoughts as one of so many needless casualties and I am sorry sorry that happened to you.
No fan of America. Vietnam is the USA's national shame. 1 For their intrusion in Vietnam and 2. For the way they treated a generation of its own young. Ignored them on their return, treated them like a pharia for their defeat, left them to their psychological nightmares, fail to recognise their sacrifice. Average age 19!!! Shame on you US of A.

Hope you are doing well. My brother who was my best friend died of a heroin overdose. I saw him struggle with it for years. One time he couldn't stop crying because he said that he messed up, made a mistake, and wished he could go back before all the drugs. It was heartbreaking to see that. I had just turned 21 at the time didn't know how to process my emotions. drank heavily for 9 years until I developed liver problems. Then finally I quit everything cold turkey nicotine and drinking. I finally got a slight glimpse of the pain and suffering my brother went through and realized it isn't worth losing my life and it is not what he would've wanted. Point is we both loved listening to AiC together and I often listen to them now and sometimes cry for my brother. The beauty of AiC is incredible and I'm glad it helps you too.
Jerry's Dad just makes me feel horrible. Jerry loves his dad and respects him enough to make a song for him. The man left what happened where it happened. Very few can do that. I hope Jerry's dad the best. Great man
No he didn't. He was severely traumatized and carried around what happened with him everywhere he went for the rest of his life. Just because he was too tormented by what happened to talk about it, doesn't me he got over it..
@@cmonalready66 i didn't say he got over it. I said he left what happened where it happened. Instead of bringing Jerry into his suffering. Look at how Jerry turned out. Id say he did a good job with his son .
@@danielholtzapple7124 Jerry is a recovering addict who clearly had communication problems with his father. His father was never able to deal with his own trauma and consequently this affected the relationship between father / son. I do not think this is the model that any family should use. Rather, I think their situation is quite tragic, and because of this, we should staunchly oppose war because of the horrific damage it causes.
@@cmonalready66 this is true BUT Jerry has spoken of how this song marked a turning point in their relationship. Jerry and dad got closer after this and have remained so. The rooster goes out on the road with AIC sometimes for shows.
These 'kids' ain't kids no more. They kinda weren't even when they wrote it. They were approaching their mid-20s, when they did. They're all pushing 60 now.
Almost every time i listen to this song it brings tears to my eyes. My dad's an old vet and I've served multiple combat tours (real combat tours... infantry) . You dont know if your gonna make it back to the wire much less back home. I would always think of my wife and two boys. This was an awesome tribute to his dad but this song goes so much deeper for so many

My dad would tell us about the Battle of the Bulge and landing on the beaches of Normandy. WAR is hell. I love all the VETERANS no matter what war.

A lot."
This is fucking awesome.

Its crazy to think weve lost all these great front men. Scott. Chris. Kurt. Andrew and Layne.
So devastatingly sad.

He was the lead singer for Mother Love Bone. A band that after his passing would become Pearl Jam.

For what?
Wow man I hope God gives you peace

My dad died in Vietnam. I never really thought about anything tangible because you know he died when I was 6 months old. I knew he had to be afraid. He was just a country kid 19 years old and I knew he had to miss home who was from such a small town. I never really realized the bullet stream from somewhere... How can you fight a war on your inconstant fight or flight mode and are not able to really think about what you're doing. You're just trying to survive. This song brought it all to me and made it so real, I can't watch the video. I never have been able to
"military men are dumb stupid animals, to be used as pawns in foreign policy" - Henry Kissinger ; the entire Vietnam war, was based on the fake Gulf of Tonkin incident. >>

Props to you soul der.
@@MrElliejimmy lol to hell with WW1 and WW2, right?😆🙄 people say the darndest things online.
Thank you for your service brother
Rest in Peace to my pops. Falsely documented hisself at 17 and battled his way through Vietnam on 2 tours. A great man. Did himself in, in 05. Greatly missed, but never forgotten.
That’s heavy. Stay well brother. Love from Texas
Lp over from Connecticut.
RiP to your dad. My uncle did the same thing... had a flash back then fought with multiple police hung himself in jail 1984 cuz he didn't know what was going on. PTSD is no joking matter. fuck all the people that called them baby killers and spit on them when they returned home...
@@red1bong EXACTLY! God bless you!
the last generation faked their age to fight in wars, kids these days get upset over getting pronouns wrong and by the word retard. forever grateful for his service
This song always has me thinking about my father [R.I.P]. He did 2 tours in Vietnam while serving in the Marine Corps. God Bless all of our veterans. "You know he ain't gonna die."
Sorry for your loss! A real fuckin hero man!!!!
The look in his eyes after he talks is more telling than anything he said with his voice. I've seen that same look in my Dad's eyes
I noticed that also. Like a wave of trauma. I can't imagine any of these guys coming back without ptsd.
War is hell! And it doesn’t stop, ever!
@@DelilaSloan Sad thing is more Military came back from Afghanistan and Iraq with PTSD, TBI-Traumatic Brain Injuries and lost Limbs then in Vietnam. I know guys that went 5-6 tours in Iraq & Afghanistan. Remember WW1 Vets in Parades now all gone. Over 95% WW2 Vets are gone along with the majority of Vietnam Vets. Many don't realize Majority that Served in Vietnam Volunteered, over 2/3. Those Served during WW2 90% had to be Drafted. Not to take away from any of them. US ARMY(Ret)-28yrs
I watch this over and over; After he says, "Let's hope noone else has to go through it - OK"... Probably not on purposes, but his micro-expressions are devastating.
My Dad served in Vietnam. His hands shake so bad anytime he talks about it.

Layne died 20 years ago today, I started getting into Alice in Chains last year and they are now personally one of my all time favorite bands and Layne one of my all time favorite singers. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, I wish you were still making music and making us smile.
Oh wow. Didn't know that
We lost so many great singers from the 90s. I grew up listening to these guys, Layne, Kurt, Chris...it's too sad!
You and I are similar, starting getting into AIC more about 2-3 years ago and they are now my favorite band. I've got a huge print of Layne on my wall
@@InhalationAerosol very cool, I have a few shirts with Layne on them.
I’m just getting into their music. So far the song I love the most is Man in the Box. Any other suggestions?

Always will

This song helped explain what a neighbor was referring to when we'd talk, well, he talked, I listened, about his Vietnam war experiences. Later, when I told his wife where I'd heard the term Rooster, she was incredulous that he freely talked with me about the war that nearly killed him and emotionally scarred him into silence about it.
I wanna talk to your neighbor. I'm a veteran, as well.
@@melmueller-spude8467 It was years ago during a previous life. I understand they've since relocated somewhere in FL. Both wonderful, gentle souls.

True Don Blue Thank you for your service & I'm sorry for what all you've endured & still are dealing with. I was 13, wrote to my Uncle over there-he was sole survivor Navy PT boat. A Cousin, Army 1st Medical unit in Kuwait-wrote him, sent clothespins. Friend USS Yorktown, lots of letters too. then, wanted to head up a pen pal exchange wNavy Carrier Vinson in my Daughter's Kindergarten class- after 9/11, bought the stamped postcards & THE SCHOOL wouldn't approve it! Can u believe that BS? An innocent letter, from sweet babies who WANTED to Thank our Soldiers, hopefully brighten up their day. Kids that seen up close & semi personal, didn't really understand...yet hearts in the right place. Sir, I honor & salute you, wish you all the good you SO deserve!
True Don Blue Bless your heart! Thank you for your service. My husband and I have a close dear friend who served as best man at our wedding who is a Vietnam vet. he's also an alcoholic and will not talk about his experience over there. he also jumps outta his skin at anything sudden.if he naps and hears or feels anything he jumps up swinging. I pray for yall.
True Don Blue I Salute to you. Just lost my father and my universe - also a Vietnam Vet. Thank you for your service ... your time.... your life. You are beyond respected and invaluable.

Yea, brutal bud. I'm OCD so know the pain. Stay strong, as stated!

My great uncle served in Vietnam he was shot in the heart by a sniper but a zipo lighter stopped the bullet smoking saved his life
Jerry's Dad just makes me feel horrible.

Almost every time i listen to this song it brings tears to my eyes. My dad's an old vet and I've served multiple combat tours (real combat tours... infantry) . You dont know if your gonna make it back to the wire much less back home. I would always think of my wife and two boys. This was an awesome tribute to his dad but this song goes so much deeper for so many
My dad was there, too. He was also a "real" vet. 1st Cav (airmobile) and saw lots of combat and lots of people in his company killed. He never would talk to me about it. He died young, age 53.
