When the roads are iced over and the wind is howling like that, anything over 30 mph is too fast. A blast of wind will suddenly 'unlock' your winter tires from the ice and you start to slide, and the wind blows you to the side of the road. Below 30 mph you will stop before you go off the road, but above 40 mph and you're in the ditch before you come to a full stop.
If the roads are iced over, you're going off the road anyways unless you're creeping along between 10-20mph. What's so deceptive about winter driving in conditions like that is sometimes you hit patches of dry pavement, and then before you realize you drive over wind swept snow packed areas that have been turned into ice. That's what gets many drivers. They're not prepared for the sudden change and then the back end slides out and you're headed for the ditch. In that part of the state, its mostly farmland, with deep drainage ditches. I've driven between Moorhead and Detroit Lakes many times in conditions like that, and from Mahnomen to Ada. Night time driving is the worst though.
If you know your vehicle have good tires and don’t hit your breaks hard like so many do than you can cruise . Not saying speed but it’s really not that hard to maneuver and get from A to B … I love this stuff though, most are extremely intimidated and not confident in themselves 🤷♂️ some just need to stay home .. I’ll continue to help the ones on the side spin out 💪
I drove home from work at 1 am in this mess. Had to stop several times when the end of the hood of my SUV disappeared. A few minutes later the wind gust ended and I drove another five miles.
good advice and it was slippery, but the big problem this day was visibility. the east/west roads were sometimes kinda bad, and sometimes whiteout. nothing was cancelled and most of us made it to work but a few ended up in the ditch.
You need to drive slow enough so that when the visibility drops to zero, you can stop fast enough before you drive off the road. Just keep the steering wheel straight, don't panic and hopefully you aren't driving in a curve when this happens.
Us Minnesotans (well most) are excellent in these conditions! I once drove through a blizzard alll the way through SD into MN and it was intense but quite a great experience IMO .. about 5 to 6 hours of staright white out and heavy winds at night lol it was something . I’ll never forget it . Makes this vid look like NOTHING.. no offense lol just saying . I can’t wait to see what this winter brings. You can bet your bottom dollar I willl be out there !!!
Always felt bad for school bus drivers I remember in the 80s getting stuck and having to wait for another bus every winter lol No matter how experienced accidents happen in this weather sadly I still see people riding people driving slower or the ones that think they can drive as fast as they want with no worries about others or passengers.
A cold weather event does not refute climate change. There will always be cold weather somewhere on Earth. Climate change means humans are displacing the global weather patterns and this is a proven fact.

Always drive slow enough to roll to a stop. That's what my dad always told me.

Glad i dont live up there anymore. Down here in Alabama they are freezing when the temps hit 60 degrees
