Any wisconsinites that want to argue Wisconsin has more lakes, your state doesn't put a lower limit on lakes, and the number of lakes technically doubles every time it rains in Milwaukee.
To add as a Minnesotan, I feel old wavy is just too corporate and will be the new state flag. Us Minnesotans are used to being disappointed in the 11th hour ETA: I was thankfully wrong and it appears MN is going with the good Ole tri color ETA 2: the council changed the flag design removing the stripes
As a fellow Minnesotan, I absolutely cannot believe the commission got rid of the Starflake in favor of Old Wavy during the latest round of voting. The Starflake won a public opinion poll with over 12,000 respondents and it was also the commission's top vote getter in the vote to decide the six semi-finalists. But then it tied for last in the vote to decide the three finalists, thus getting eliminated. What changed?
The breaking news that matters. That said, I’m Australian. I have literally no skin in this game, most of my limited knowledge of MN is from watching Mighty Ducks movies, but am somehow invested. Good luck Minnesota.
I looked it up, pretty cool design, very similar to Polaris Tricolor. I imagine people with OCD would be very upset about it though. Way better than Old Wavy. Great job, my friend! :D
Being a Minnesotan I am so glad to be getting a redesign. I wholeheartedly agree with your preferences and so excited to see your reviews on these finalists!
Cannot be understated how much "looks like a flag" is essential for designing a state flag. The tricolor is the only viable option bc the others are arguably banners and would look more at home on a dorm room wall instead of in front of the state house.
The only reason I don't like Starrise (an otherwise good flag) is that I'm positive that I've stayed at an inexpensive hotel with exactly that logo. Or maybe a retirement home. It looks 'residential', like the flag of Minnesota's property development consortium, or something. I guess some people would say that's what a state is...
It got all the way to the 1 yard line and.... they biffed it. I really don't understand why *so many* new flag designs are going for two shades of blue in the design.
At first, I didn’t like any of them, but Grey, you got me interested on Polaris Tricolor. The thing that bugged me the most about the two other flags is that they looked like paintings, and going off your criteria for grading the state flags, “a flag is not a painting.”
As a Minnesotan closely following this race, I've been a fan of Old Wavy since the beginning, and I still like it, but this video did raise the standing of Polaris Tricolor in my estimation (which is good, because it is now our flag). Also, it amuses me greatly to have one of my favorite UA-camrs commenting on my state's flag redesign ;)
Born and raised Minnesotan Art Director. Popping in to say thanks for the video, and also, your opinion is correct. I particularly like your consideration for the vertical hang, which really makes Polaris Tricolor even *better*, and is an easily overlooked aspect.
What is Ohio if not an inverted triangle? Also, I personally prefer "Old Wavy" over "Star Rise". "Star Rise" is the epitome of boring, just a word inside it away from being the logo of an agricultural company.
Oh. My ranking was the reverse. Old Wavy looks distinctive and evocative, Star Rise has a similar idea but simplified, where as Polaris Tricolor looks like the flag of some small country I've never heard about.
I like the idea of the Old Wavy, but it's hard to make and paint. So it gets a no. Good point about hanging Star Ride vertically. So I agree, Polaris Tricolor is good and can work even on an international level. And, kids can draw it in crayon.
Out of all the craziness of recent times, this is what gets CGP Grey’s attention and it’s so incredibly on brand haha Edit: hell yeah baby the best flag won 👍
I think Old Wavy is a pretty cool flag design. It's not every day you see something like that with no straight lines, but it doesn't particularly look messy at all. I like how the two blues, one white, and kind of muted yellow work well together. It gives off a welcoming vibe that's not too sharp or industrial. Plus, it kind of reminds me of the Cathay Pacific logo, which is one of my favorites. Old Wavy, like the Cathay Pacific logo, is simple but unique and has a certain charm to it. I prefer the third option for the Polaris design. The strong green color in the original option feels too harsh between the light blue and white colors. The third option's color scheme makes more sense to me. The sky is blue, the snow is white, and the landscape is a lush green. Although, if the third option kept the same colors as the first option, it would still work for me.
The moment I saw the Polaris tricolor I was like THAT ONE! It really is shocking that the K or inverted triangle hasn't been done before. As Grey said, it feels so natural in the context of flags.
As a new Minnesota resident, im pulling for Polaris Tricolor. It was my favorite from the start (other than laser loon and Republic of Minnesota with a mosquito)
As a Minnesotan who loves flags, YES POLARIS TRICOLOR! Come on flag committee, please make good choices. But also, disappointed that we don’t get laser loon.
My own ranking: Old Wavy, then the tricolor, then the Star Rise. It's important, in my view, that the symbols in flags stand for something actually distinct about the place they honor. Every place has green land and blue skies. Every northern place cloaks its hills in snow. But to put the Aurora and the river in the shape of the state bird? That creates a meaningful distinction! It's sad that it doesn't have a representation of the Thousand Lakes, but neither do the other two. It'd have to be vert ten roundels azure, or something like that, to properly evoke "lakes" and not just "lake"!
Honestly my first impression was it looks really cool, but it definitely doesn't look like a flag, like it could easily not stand the test of time, like corporate logos and such.
full agreement here, I had the ame ranking when I paused to rank them myself. You much better articulated why old wavy seems off to me, great work there.
Another Minnesotan here also rooting for Polaris Tricolor! The next meeting of the redesign commission is like 12 hours from now, we'll see what happens next! (Polaris Tricolor DID have the most votes outright when they narrowed it down from 6 to 3!)
The Polaris Tricolor isn't just mimicking the state shape, it's a quarter of the Mi'kmaq star (8 pointed tribal star design) that all three non-finalist flags have.
Am I the only one who thought that little tangent of state seals sounded like a great video. Like Grey ranking them like he did the state flags would be a great watch
I’ve been wondering your thoughts. Everyone in the Twin Cities I’ve spoken too about the flag design attribute it to two things: 1. The Tribes 2. CGP Grey.
I'd love the laser loon, but this video has convinced me that the polaris tricolor would be pretty great, even if I was cold towards the 6 finalists initially.
I'd love more flag videos from CGP Grey! Ranking State Capitol flags, ranking world flags, whatever! Love these videos! Maybe just make a CGP Grey Flag Channel.
I have to say My personal favorite is Polaris tricolor. It just makes sense. It's simple. It's got definition and it has a way of being simple enough to draw reliably. It reminds me of Texas in a way simple enough that you can see it from afar and no whose flag it is. 1:34
Granted, I pegged the Mississippi River and snow aspect of Old Wavy immediately when I saw the first video, so I didn't need it explained to me, but I really like it. I like Tricolor the best, but I had Old Wavy second in your first video.
What i liked the most about polaris tricolor compared to the rest in this vid is that its the easiest to draw if you’re a kid. Draw the K in which is easy to eyeball. Get some help with the star admittedly, but after that flags almost done! I’d almost give this flag to a nation, though I am probably dunning kreugering a bit cuz I don’t know squat about flags
The final flag has been selected: ua-cam.com/video/XvDFrBRpo20/v-deo.html
NAME FOR YEARLY THEME- STEADY AS SHE GOES!
Really disappointing, the tricolor looked so good
For anyone who thinks Minnesota is exaggerating about its 10,000 lakes: there are actually 11,842 lakes that are at least 10 acres or larger.
We like humility us Minnesotans
If people don't believe 10,000 then wait until they hear about Manitoba...
And don't let anyone from Wisconsin tell you they have 15,000. They define "lake" as anything larger than a puddle.
I always wondered about that
Any wisconsinites that want to argue Wisconsin has more lakes, your state doesn't put a lower limit on lakes, and the number of lakes technically doubles every time it rains in Milwaukee.
As a Minnesotan I am disappointed that we did not get laser loon.
I cried. I love laser loon.
Get over it we gotta start freaking out about a future with old wavy above our heads
As a Minnesotan, I wanted the Starflake (aka F29) to be our new flag. I’m adopting as the New Minnesota Flag in protest anyway!
Looks with freaking "laser beams"
We need a seal ranking video!
Oh yes, please do! (The audience must be fed mwhahaha!)
You really don't. Texas will just win that also, and if you think we are insufferable after the flag video, just wait.
THIS
I like harbor seals!
@@bozimmerman It ain't bragging if you really got it.
To add as a Minnesotan, I feel old wavy is just too corporate and will be the new state flag. Us Minnesotans are used to being disappointed in the 11th hour
ETA: I was thankfully wrong and it appears MN is going with the good Ole tri color
ETA 2: the council changed the flag design removing the stripes
I think at first glance I liked old wavy but every time I look at it I'm like "Yeah... no" and I do fear it will become our new state flag...
As a fellow Minnesotan, I absolutely cannot believe the commission got rid of the Starflake in favor of Old Wavy during the latest round of voting. Offda, you're a Vikings fan, I can tell. As Red Green says "I'm pulling for ya, we're all in this together."
@tommyfrerking indeed I am. My first disappointment was the missed field goal of 2015 in then tcf stadium
Keep your stick on the ice@@tommyfrerking
The breaking news that matters.
That said, I’m Australian. I have literally no skin in this game, most of my limited knowledge of MN is from watching Mighty Ducks movies, but am somehow invested. Good luck Minnesota.
We've got our own flags of varying quality. Best? NT. Worst? ACT. The designer himself has disowned it.
Watch Fargo it will add to the experience 😂😂😂

Hey I know it's too late but I just wanna tell everyone I designed F304 and I'm very proud to say it was one of the finalists before the final 6.
I looked it up, pretty cool design, very similar to Polaris Tricolor. I imagine people with OCD would be very upset about it though. Way better than Old Wavy. Great job, my friend! :D
When I first saw the tricolor flag I thought it was good, but I now really like it because I realized looks great vertically.
As an Austrian, I was surprised to see our flag under the "tri-color examples", seeing as it's red, white, and *the exact same* red again... :P
I believe maybe by tri-colour he meant tri-bar? Otherwise that's a serious blunder.
You have quite an odd definition of "serious". at worst, it's a minor typo.

As of today Polaris Tricolor has been selected by the committee. It is now considering variations to the design.
Sadly, they removed the tricolor and left it as a light blue field. I preferred the three colors.
Could not agree more! I think the rule "looks like a flag, not a corporate logo" is going to be increasingly important for flag redesigns.
Minnesotan here - You should make a reaction video to the variation of the Polaris Tricolor that was chosen. I think they butchered it.
The only problem with Polaris tricolour is that it’s too good. Like it’s surpasses “state flag” look and creeps into the “country flag” look.
Honestly agree, Minnesota should become a country
I am in the (apparently very small) group that likes Old Wavy the best, but all three of these flags are massive improvements over the current one.
I preferred Star Rise until you mentioned how it would look hanging vertically. After that, I'm with you 100% on Polaris Tricolor.
Minnesotan born and raised and I love seeing your opinions on our new flags, especially since they mirror my own!
I paused the video when asked and ended up agreeing exactly with Grey, EXCEPT THAT NO Old Wavy would be better than the current flag!
So much better than our current flag...
It got all the way to the 1 yard line and.... they biffed it.
I really don't understand why *so many* new flag designs are going for two shades of blue in the design.
The snowflake with the north star in the background was so amazing. I am angry it got cut
United States seal tier list perhaps?
At first, I didn’t like any of them, but Grey, you got me interested on Polaris Tricolor. The thing that bugged me the most about the two other flags is that they looked like paintings, and going off your criteria for grading the state flags, “a flag is not a painting.”
Hey congrats, you made the news here in Minnesota!
As a Minnesotan closely following this race, I've been a fan of Old Wavy since the beginning, and I still like it, but this video did raise the standing of Polaris Tricolor in my estimation (which is good, because it is now our flag). Polaris Tricolor is my favorite for sure. It needs to be the official flag RIGHT NOW!!!
Calling it now, next CGP Grey video will focus on State Seals.
So many of those redesigns look like the field on a business card
My favourite was actually star rise …until you showed it sideways. Yeah okay, polaris tricolor it is.
I totally agree with that ranking. However I don't even hate Old Wavy that much. These are all improvements I think.

As soon as you showed the polaris tricolor hanging vertically, I was so on board.
Out of all the craziness of recent times, this is what gets CGP Grey’s attention and it’s so incredibly on brand haha
Edit: hell yeah baby the best flag won 👍
After dubbing the current flag I the worst, his opinion was very much required.
It seems they neutered it by removing the horizontal stripes.
I didn't dislike Old Wavy but my God the inverted triangle as a simplification of Minessota itself is OUTSTANDING. Go Polaris tricolor!
Although, if the third option kept the same colors as the first option, it would still work for me.
It would be cool to see a video ranking each state's seals.
This is what gets CGP Grey to make emergency videos 👍
Yes Grey get distracted, NEED THAT SEAL VIDEO!
Pssst! Minnesota made a final choice. You're going to be disappointed.
The moment I saw the Polaris tricolor I was like THAT ONE! It really is shocking that the K or inverted triangle hasn't been done before. As Grey said, it feels so natural in the context of flags.
Oh thank heavens! It’s a Christmas Miracle!
Old Wavy looks like a 1990s-era software splash screen. The only thing missing is a background gradient.
Chances Grey sees this are low - but they made a final decision and I’m waiting with bated breath for his new rank…though I fear the disappointment
Didn’t know I needed this update but hell yeah more Cgp content 🎉
Polaris Tricolor is easily S-tier!
It’s in a tier of its own above S…
I don't think swooshes belong on flags. Old Wavy is a swoosh logo. It's more appropriate for a 2000s company.
As a new Minnesota resident, im pulling for Polaris Tricolor. It was my favorite from the start (other than laser loon and Republic of Minnesota with a mosquito)
Also, that new state seal is AWESOME.
As a Minnesotan who loves flags, YES POLARIS TRICOLOR! Come on flag committee, please make good choices.
But also, disappointed that we don’t get laser loon.

LET'S GO MY STATE!!! I saw this on the news and was waiting for your response...
You should totally do a seal video
(The state kind or the pinniped, I like em both)
I absolutely love the Polaris Tricolor as a native Minnesotan. That "K" shape on the flag is something you see everywhere.
the old wavy hate is insane yo
Honestly my first impression was it looks really cool, but it definitely doesn't look like a flag, like it could easily not stand the test of time, like corporate logos and such.
full agreement here, I had the ame ranking when I paused to rank them myself. You much better articulated why old wavy seems off to me, great work there.

Minnesota, please know that whatever new flag you choose, we the love you for getting us another video from Grey
CGP Grey.
I completely agree with all of your takes.
Polaris Tricolor just looks right. Official. Traditional. Clean.
Old Wavey takes it for me
You should re-grade the new Minnesota flag pls
Did you really shame an entire state into picking a new flag. Well done. Well done.
A winner has been announced
…
Polaris no stripes. It is only the light blue on the right side.
I am honestly disappointed. Sorry, Minnesotans
I'd love the laser loon, but this video has convinced me that the polaris tricolor would be pretty great, even if I was cold towards the 6 finalists initially.
The tricolor is awesome. The other two flags look like drink cup designs.
*Pauses the video* Okay left and right are both good, but which one's the best. Uhhhh Old Wavy! *Unpauses the video* Aw come on!
I'm kind of sad that #408 didn't make the shortlist, despite its vexilogical flaws
Totally agree with your ranking of these three.
We have the exact opposite taste in Flags, Gray. I like the Tricolor one the least, and I like "Old Wavy" the most.😅
As a Minnesota resident, I'm hoping for Polaris tricolor to win, but wouldn't mind Star rise.
I'd love more flag videos from CGP Grey! Ranking State Capitol flags, ranking world flags, whatever! Love these videos! Maybe just make a CGP Grey Flag Channel.
The fact that I'm watching a UA-cam video about a flag for a state I don't even live in, is a testament to just how good Grey's videos are.
I like "Old Wavy" myself.
The wavy flag looks like a logo for a company that sells Solutions and Insights or something.
How badass would it be to be able to point at a state flag and say "I designed that"
I have to say My personal favorite is Polaris tricolor. It just makes sense. It's simple. It's got definition and it has a way of being simple enough to draw reliably. It reminds me of Texas in a way simple enough that you can see it from afar and no whose flag it is. 1:34
I really kinda like old wavy its wavy and pretty and i bet it looks cool flapping in the breeze
Granted, I pegged the Mississippi River and snow aspect of Old Wavy immediately when I saw the first video, so I didn't need it explained to me, but I really like it. I like Tricolor the best, but I had Old Wavy second in your first video.

I’d almost give this flag to a nation, though I am probably dunning kreugering a bit cuz I don’t know squat about flags
Star Rise looks like a bank logo.
Your favorite is also mine. As a resident of MI, I hope we follow suit soon!
6:25 I like actually really like the pastel-ness of them
As someone who lives in Indianapolis, I liked it when you showed our city flag as a good example of a city flag.
I am a Minnesotan. If it's not Polaris Tricolor, I'm moving.
Im glad you picked that flag, because as you say its the only one that looks like a flag
I like that at 5:52, one of the flags on the left is a photo of a dog. Best flag! 🐕
You got your wish, Grey! We are going with your favorite! Now to see if the add any new design elements.
A state seal video! We need it! You know you want to do it!
Honestly i quite like Star Rise, though the windless hang is a good point
I’m totally wanting Nevada to use your *Battle Born* design.
Love seeing my home on the international stage! 💙
2:58 oh wow, Indianapolis flag jumpscare! lol
Just saw the design Minnesota finally picked, I didn’t like it on the screen, but photographs of it flying actually look amazing
