Thanks so much for showing all these different methods. When I first tried the foam roller, I really didn’t like it, but after a little practice, I started to get how to go light handed and not over load the foam, it looks much better. I used your method of applying top coat on a dining table lately, with a bit sanding in between it really became smooth and flawless. Thank you Shannon

This was so helpful! I have been on pause with my kitchen cabinet project because I am hopefully waiting for them to be sprayed but it’s been taking so long! I fully filled them with aqua coat which came out really nicely, and have been living with just primer on them for months now. I think I’ll just take the plunge and roll them myself with of course, your number one pick!

So interesting to hear your thoughts re. the fluffy velour roller, and re-assuring that - for you too - it tended to struggle rolling smoothly, and was inclined to slide across the paint. My experience with this type of applicator was disconcerting, and even a bit discouraging - despite the packaging promising an 'ultra-smooth finish'.

I appreciate you sharing this. One important comment, if you read the directions on the whizz rollers it explains they need to be pre-wetted. If you roll a dry roller on top of a single coat of paint all it will do is pull up the paint from the surface. If you pre-wet that gray roller it causes the fiber to lay down and I'm pretty sure that would have given you the smoothest finish.

Would I be able to add varathane to an existing chalk paint to make a 1 step or something that holds up better until I put on top coat? Curious to see what you and the chat thinks. A lot of it has to do with the paint. Get a self leveling paint. My cabinets are beautifully smooth. We had a contractor paint the inside of our home. He asked me go painted our cabinets because they did a beautiful job. That would be me! Rolled and brushed with light sanding in between. He was shocked that no sprayer was used. Then asked me if I wanted to paint his personal cabinets

Packed full of tips and from the point of actual experience. I thnk you're bloody brilliant! So much of this is similar to car detailing.: prep, paint, finish. As I have a lot of that on hand I'd fill the oak grain I'd try car body filler - brilliant to sand, cheap and available everywhere. They even do a fine putty/glaze for filling any pin holes showing after said sanding. Guessing thatd be good if I ever need something to fill some smaller damage in a piece before priming. And I have tack rags instead of baby wipes. And oodles of rollers from the garage revamp. Hmmm. You've got my brain going now, ta!

Can you do this on already painted cabinets and doors? The doors were done at my cabinet builders factory and they are only 2.5 years painted, they are already chipping. Ugh. Not what I would expect from a factory sprayed finish, they looked ok when I got them but the finish didn’t match the cabinets or the color and it was supposed to be the same exact color. I’m going to change the co,or completely this next time though as I want them to match the built in that we had ordered form another cabinet maker and the finish is beautiful and the co,or is true through the whole cabinet and drawers. I have interior doors to paint first before we get to the kitchen cabinets though. I painted the bathroom cabinets already by hand using a brush and I like seeing the wood grain showing through. Our home is styled in a rustic, coastal craftsman feel and so far I’m pleased and it’s been almost a year since painting over the golden oak stain of 22 years, had to do 2 coats and touch up a little after the two coats dried. I like the finish a lot, but want smoother for the kitchen because the doors are map,e and the body of the cabinets are mostly oak except for the corner cabinets and island cabinets which we added to give us more storage. The bathroom cabinets are good quality cabinets too, just not crazy about the interiors. They were stained a little water damaged, but still good enough to not replace just yet. So I covered the bottoms of the babies and drawers lined with non stick contact papers and they look pretty good.

You can, it’ll darken it a bit though. I usually use the dry brush in the the yellow color or in the base color to blend any areas that are too dark, you could also use mineral spirits and wipe away some. But I’ve had the best luck with just dry brushing the yellow and the original tan color, hope that helps ❤️

I’ve tried that and ended up with some colors I didn’t expect on some and others ended up perfect 😅 but it’s worth a shot, color theory is still something I haven’t quite got a full grip on. I’m using the Sherman Williams enamel urethane which is supposed to be the best available after having the most godawful Experience with bad Valspar kitchen and cabinet paint. I’m painting my kitchen is tricorn black, but it was bad batch is a paint that wouldn’t dry. They just stayed tacky, even though I was doing REALLY thin layers with with 72+ hours dry time. Also using the wiz like you said, but I keep getting orange peel!!! 😠 Found out from a painter the darker colors take longer to cure, but not not dry. That shouldn’t create orange peel though. Found if I do a heavier coat it pools in the corners. 🤔 Thoughts? Cabinets did better. May try and finish out backs around the hardware, hang them and try that way. What if they are painted by a professional, but the paint was so cheap because it’s chipped off on some doors and one cabinet body edge. These cabinets were painted only 2 1/2 years ago! The doors were brand new built by the kitchen cabinet builder and we did vertical shiplap, medium wide bead board planks on the bodies of the cabinets because they were like a oak laminate and ugly, though the doors were so,I’d oak. We paid a lot to have our kitchen remodeled! Even hired an electrician to install can lighting and under cabinet lighting. We are pleased with those, except one makes a buzzing sound in the ceiling, can’t figure out how to fix it. I’m so ticked off! My husband and I want to repaint the whole kitchen next year, but in the mean time the cabinet doors some of them look really bad! The bathroom cabinets that are oak doors, but we planked the sides of those too like we did the kitchen cabinets, I painted 2 coats myself, no primer and used the valspar that you used and they are a blue grey shade and they turned out GORGEOUS! Thank you for any help! What do you do to fill in the chips before painting? I bought all grades of sanding sponges too.

Oh man, that’s so tough, I do notice that the harder and thicker the paint is the more likely it will chip so that may be the case for your cabinets. If I were you I would sand the chips and fill as needed to get a smooth surface and then I would use Valspar furniture and cabinet enamel over top of the old paint. I’d do coats of that and then a 3rd coat of half paint and half water based polyurethane and maybe even a 4th coat if I felt like it needed it. Hope that helps a bit!

the Bin Shellac dries in 10 mins so you don't have to wait to put the first coat of the paint. and usually one coat will do and I did navy blue. GReat Great paint. Not getting paid to say that.

What? You combine clear coat, primer and paint and put it all on at once? I don't know about that. That's not how the paint companies say to do it. That's not how the pro painters do it. Seems to me the different products have different qualities and you put them on in an order for a reason.

A lot of expensive designer paints are putting everything in one, Dixie Belle, I think Beyond Paint, and others, and this is cheaper. I haven't tried anything myself yet, but many say it works great.

@@anneporter123 I only know one person who has tried All In One and actually tested it. She painted her kitchen cabinets. She said 2 months later it started chipping off and she had to re-do all of them. She said it was a nightmare. Not one pro I know will touch it.
The thing about painting is if you paint a piece and put it over in the corner and never touch it, how would you ever know?

If you are trying to get a spray finish - why not buy a sprayer? This is making want to buy a sprayer.

I have a few sprayers and a sprayer will give a beautiful finish ❤️ it’s a pros snd cons thing..it’s a messy thing that you have to set up for and they also use a lot more paint but they paint in nooks and crannys super fast and have great coverage. I still use my sprayer a lot though, especially on anything with shelves. I use the one from harbor freight that’s like $15 and a nice air compressor. I plan to do a video on that soon 👏

@@blacksheephouse Thanks. My son is putting in a kitchen on my side of the house where none existed before. We ordered some stock cabinets that are white and they will be arriving soon. I'm in charge of the painting. I want white cabinets on top and blue on the bottom. I was going to try to sponge roller with Dixie Belle paint (already ordered). I've never used a sprayer if I can get one at Freight Harbor for $15 I think I will try it on something. What uses up the paint? Having left over paint in the sprayer?

@@anneporter123 the sprayer uses up more paint bc some dries in the air before it reaches surface but it’s a very nice real pro finish for sure. If you already have access to a air compressor you should give it a try, the air compressor is what’s a bit more $ you also have to tape off area a lot with plastic bc overspray will get on items in your home
