You taught a semi-old painter a few new tricks. I've probably painted 100 kitchen cabinets in my life but a few of the things you mentioned I will definitely try. Thanks for the good video!
Great video that taught me how to do it right this time! 2nd time painting our kitchen cabinets. I got the top of counter done and they look amazing. I used Purdue brushes this time but drank some cheap Coors Light. Thank you for your knowledge!
I'm almost ready to start the process according to your video and going with Benjamin Moore paint, per your recommend from another video...happy to send pics and will try to do before and after, bought some high end Maple, all wood, cabinets from my local Restore and saved several pockets of cash vs buying new...gonna be a lot of work, but worth it in the end with all this inflation! Now I need to pick a color and want a nice color vs the average white...thanks for the tips!
Excellent step by step video- really appreciated all your experienced tips and suggestions. Happy to see that cabinets are able to be beautifully painted without using sprayer.
Amazing video and I’m impressed how well the cabinet came out using a paint brush!. I’m in the process of building and painting my laundry room cabinets using the process from your previous videos on the different types of paints you use and will show you once it’s done.
I will say this , you did a good job considering the bead board and all the troubles that creates with puddling around the edges .... you did paint the hardest door known to man !!!! lol , gutsy move there
Satin for Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane is a little to dull, semi gloss on light colors. Ben Moore is fine for satin. Maybe a mohair roller is practical also.
Are the best brushes syntheti or natural bristle please? Also, would you use diffrent products on cupboards that have had thermafoil plastic removed, leaving MDF to seal and paint? You may not see this but thought I'd take a chance. Here in U.K, HARRIS brushes are supposed to be the best.
One trick I heard about is to slightly round any sharp edges. Especially for oak cabinets that were varnished often dont have the edges knocked down. Paint doesnt stick well to those sharp edges.
Sorry but when do you add the condition to the door ? Do i add it to tge tin of paint did i miss this part- any info wouldxbe aporeciated- first time trying to paint my kichen cabinets- what a great video thanks
I already have a gallon of SW Extreme Bond to use on our cabinets.. Will it hold up well in you experience? My cabinets are laminate with a few peeling spots that will have to be addressed maybe with some sanding... Thanks
Do you have an opinion on Sherwin Williams Gallery paint for cabinets . And do you like the Benjamin moore you used in this video ? I will be using a schellac primer and spraying .
It would be helpful to see more of a close up of the finish on those cabinets, and compare that side by side to a sprayed finish to get an idea of how closely this process matches a sprayed finish. My guess is that brush strokes are still noticeable. Not that that is a bad thing.
I am about to do my kitchen island, which on three sides is just that stock basic board backing. That material is like glorified cardboard. If I am using a latex paint, will this not make it warp?
I find that Corona brush is better than a Wooster. It may cost more but you get what you pay for. Insul X is a primer you cannot beat for cabinet work and waterborn urethane Insul X Cabinet Coat has a pencil hardness of 2b where Advance is 6b.
Auqua coat grain filler. UA-cam "The Idaho painter" he has tons of videos on the subject of grain filling. Also as far as primer I wouldn't recommend Sherwin-Williams extreme bond primer. I am a professional painter with close to 20 years in the trade doing a huge set of kitchen cabinets this week
In regards to the finish coating on the cabinet doors using Advance. Did you paint 1 side of door and wait a day and then turn them over to paint other side? No other way?
I have not tested it yet for washability and durability. I will be doing so in a few weeks once the paint has cured. Please subscribe and you will automatically receive the video. Thanks!!
@@Avital4414 no way .... long dry time , less durable , gets tacky gooey while brushing ..... and again , less durable - ua-cam.com/video/-TVrtJwLqgA/v-deo.html
I used Emerald for a while then had to use Advanced on a job. I'll never go back. Advanced was easy to work with, looked better and cost about $20 a gallon less. Everyone should give it a try.
more than what the direction say. I usually double it. Start off following the directions and see how it feels. When yuo have the right amount it should glide on like you are painting an ice cube.
A roller leaves a stipple in the paint that creates more surface area. All this extra surface area causes it to dry before it gets a chance to level leaving a peddled or orange peel look. It could work fine if humidity/temp and air movement is in your favor but all of those are hard to control without a being in a quality $$$$ paint booth.
CJP. Excellent technical explanation. Love when people can simply things. Simply put you can get factory finish if you have unlimited time and high humidity regardless of the application as gravity will self level anything as long as it can move. Master cabinet painter can use sprayers to mitigate marks and adjusted thickness and dry time for their environment.
Good video and covered all for brush painting. But why? The time involved is so much more than spraying and there is no cost difference for paint if you just rent a spray gun...DIY. Or just order new doors. But everyone likes To DIY.
Lots of good tips but according to what I see at 9:45 this is not a 'factory' finish. I can still see brush strokes. I don't believe any brush work can compare to a good spray. I think anyone wanted to do this should go and buy small paint can and do a test. It is true that not anyone wants to buy or rent paint sprayer or want to learn how to use it. Paint one half of a test board with this method brush and other half with home depot spray can and compare which one is closer to factory finish.
Why prime previously painted cabinets doors ? And why sand cetween coats ? I never do either of those steps on my cabinets. I only prime if I paint over natural wood cabinets that have never been painted before. And I only use a brush for corners / indented areas..then I use a mini roller on the flat areas..why do you now use a mini roller ?
Wow!!!! sooo many Pro tips in one vid! Thank you!!! Love it!!!

Thank you sir

Satin for Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane is a little to dull, semi gloss on light colors. Ben Moore is fine for satin. Maybe a mohair roller is practical also.
I’m spraying the doors and drawer fronts, but I’m doing the boxes like you are doing it.

Pls Answer, Shellac primer? What do you use on the actual cabinet boxes, i don't want to spray the primer in the house?? Best tips ever ; )
Benjamin Moore advance or Benjamin Moore cabinet paint in your preference
I am about to do my kitchen island, which on three sides is just that stock basic board backing. That material is like glorified cardboard. If I am using a latex paint, will this not make it warp?
Curious why you don't use a whizz roller ?
thanks for the detailed video and not drawing it out for 40 minutes. Question...can this latex conditioner be added to Benjamin Moore Advance alkyd?
no. Oil paint has it's own conditioner
I think I saw brush strokes.? Would a roller have worked any better? Otherwise seems spraying might be the ultimate finish.
A microplush roller would be better yet!
Would like to know how much Latex Conditioner to add to the paint. Thanks.
about a cup to a gallon. As you keep using it for brushing, you will likely need to add more.
Type of brush??
Do I need a sealer as the last step for my kitchen cabinets?
No!

It would be super cool to do that same video but use S.W. Emerald U. Enamel and see how the cabinets come out.👍
Any tips and tricks when painting oak? Looking to remove, cover or fill the grain. Thanks! Great video!

Shellac primer as well

Yes I did, and it is important to wait at least 16 hours between coats.
top coat what did you use did not show it or I missed it
Can you tell me or show me how to paint mobile home cabinets?
Please send a picture of your cabinets to dklappen2@gmail.com
You didn’t mention what to do with the conditioner. I was told you didn’t need a conditioner with The SW Emerald.
Great tips. Thanks much!

@@chuckwdaniel after painting with Advance, do you clean brushes with mineral spirits - or do you find that soap and water is adequate?
Hello great video, if I'm using BM Advance paint do I still need to prime and use the latex extender?
How much latex extender do you put in?
more than what the direction say. I usually double it. Start off following the directions and see how it feels. When yuo have the right amount it should glide on like you are painting an ice cube.
I'm curious, can you explain your choice not to use a roller? Personal preference? Does it make a difference on the final result?
A roller leaves a stipple in the paint that creates more surface area. All this extra surface area causes it to dry before it gets a chance to level leaving a peddled or orange peel look. You didn’t mention finishing with a clear coat. Do you recommend using a clear coat over the paint?
Why would he use a clear coat? The point here is a quality, durable satin finish and that’s what he achieved
You stated without spraying...
You showed us how to spray the primer on outside
So how does one prime the frames without spraying?
Did I miss this?
You can brush or roll the frames. It's easy either way.
So you don’t need any type of top coat
I still see brush strokes and sprayers are faster
👍🇺🇸👍
Glad it was helpful.
What if you have polyurethane on wood? Should I strip and sand it all off?
Nothing changes. same process
top coat????????
