The bad thing about much of the surplus ammo on the market is that it is either Iranian or Turk, and it wasn't stored in great conditions... although I have shot some, I mainly load up on the PPU when it is on sale. Still makes it cost prohibitive to practice for mad minutes though :)

Typically it's a mild steel backer plate due to the fact that the carbide layer is actually robotic MIG welded to the backer. The heat from the welding anneals the steel backer rendering ar500 pretty pointless and overpriced for a backing material.
