    The Russian plate, presented in this video, is a part of the complex with an antirrexoshete package and shock absorber plate behind. So this is made to keep the balance between weight and protection.

  • @ВячеславФролов-д7я

    In Russian armor standards blunt damage is taken into account. So if a plate stops a sertain bullet, but solider gets a massive trauma, like here with 30-06 ap, it is classified as not protecting from that bullet. That's why this plate is sertified only against 7.63x39 while being able to hold much larger caliber shot

    "Level 5" refers to the GOST standard, which is the russian equivalent to the American NIJ standard. GOST level 5 means it will protect against 7.62x54r and below. It's similar to NIJ level 3.

    • @CharlieFoxtrot128
      @CharlieFoxtrot128 Рік тому +63

      That’s new GOST. Level 5A means it’s using the old GOST system, which is rated to stop API 7.62x39

    • @BlackBladeGroM
      @BlackBladeGroM Рік тому +85

      "GOST" is an entire standards system, similar to NIST, STANAG or ISO. "5A" marking on the Russian plate specifically references the document GOST R 50744-95 that defined Russian-made body armor from 1995 to 2014 in its original version. This incidentally dates this plate as pre-'14 manufacture.
      5A is actually supposed to protect you from anything up to and including 7.62*39 BZ (armor-piercing incendiary) out of an AKM from 5-10m range. *54R protection was defined as level 6\6A under the old GOST.
      New, post-'14 amendment to GOST R 50744-95 defines a different rating system, in which such a plate falls under Br4 class. These specific plates are currently issued as part of Ratnik kit to basic bitch infantry, indirect combatants and pretty much anyone who merits an armor vest in Russian army. Assault troops and special guys either get Br5 Granit plates, rated up to 7.62*54R B32 AP rounds, or commercial Br5 plates to better fit their gucci gear.
      Also, GOST R 50744-95 defines protection class for an entire assembled armor vest, not just the plates. Granit isn't supposed to be a standalone plate (although many run it that way in lower-profile commercial plate carriers), it's supposed to go on top of Br1-rated kevlar layer.

      Did the soviets really do the “America says “fuck the metric system except if it’s to build rockets or make bullets. One for liability reasons. The other because fuck you. Lol” but with the NIJ system. Which is used by most American Allie’s to rate their body armor lol

    • @CharlieFoxtrot128

      @@TemptationsEnd nah a lot of countries technically have their own system. The US military technically has their own system too, different from NIJ. That’s why Matt calls the Military plate a SAAPI plate,

    • @BlackBladeGroM
      @BlackBladeGroM Рік тому +17

      @@TemptationsEnd No, not really. We just have a different threat landscape, different military doctrine and an entire metric-based index system full of calibers we make, use and export. It makes sense for us to rate our armor against our own weapons and ammo.
      Also, most of "American Allies" have their own body armor rating systems, and AFAIK there's no STANAG standard for armor, just a couple of US DoD program designations like SAPI\ESAPI\XSAPI that most NATO armor manufacturers decided to follow for marketing clarity.
      NIJ is a civilian\police organization and has no place rating everyone's armor. It's just that their rating system is what US market is most familiar with, so anyone trying to sell plates in US must define their product against it or risk not being understood by customers. Capitalism, eh.

Russian one used to have 5A/BR4 (old/new Russian classification) class - designed to handle Intermediate 7,62×39 AP cartridge (I think it's something average NIJ 3 and NIJ 3A, closer to 3). While SAPI had NIJ 4, must handle 7.62×63 AP, rifle cartridge. So, the last shot, by Garand, was overload to Russian - it is not design to handle rifle bullets. For objective test, compareable plates are Russian 6A/BR5 - 7.62×54 AP and SAPI you tested, or what you had with NIJ 3.

Our countries have different standards and markings of armor plates) And when a large bulge appeared in it, it should not have been able to withstand that shot at all. And so me and my pet bear love to watch your videos, especially the promo for them at the beginning) Good luck to you and the well-being of your family, my American friend! P.S. Edit: Plus if the kevlar is integrated into the plate then why would you have to wear more kevlar? If anything it would cost more having to make the kevlar separate because I'm sure it's in its own little protective cover rather than it being in the plate and not needing another piece of fabric with another branding logo and ballistic info printed on it.

    8:07 correction: M855 have steel cores, but are not are not AP. The green tips are just paint to differentiate them from M193, because M855 requires a faster pitch of rifling (such as the 1:8 used by modern M16s/M4s) than the 1:12 that the old M16s used.

    • @iangay318
      @iangay318 Рік тому +1

      The M4 uses a 1:7 twist rate. M855 has a steel core that aids in armor penetration. M193 is a lighter weight round (55gr) and can be stabilized by slower twist rates like the 1:12 used by the M16A2 because of the longer barrel. The M4 has a shorter barrel and thus requires a faster twist rate in order to stabilize the same round. M855 was made to work better in a shorter barrel with a faster twist rate by using a heavier projectile (62gr) which is achieved through the use of a steel core. M855 fragments less reliably in the human body than M193 due to the higher velocity achieved and maintained by the lighter 55gr projectile.

      It shouldn't be that hard really. Just take one of those AR500 shooting targets and put it on a load cell then shoot. You can graph the force applied over time, and using some math determine the total forces acting on the plate. After adjusting for the mass of the steel plate (or just choosing one thats roughly equal to a normal body plate) you can simply look at the peak force to see what the experience would be like. Its going to be slightly less than just dumping the maximum energy right into the guy, as some will go to plate deformation (for ceramic plates at least, which is a big part of their function), some will go into your chest being compressed like a spring (thanks to your lungs and flexible skeletal structure), and the rest is going right into your bones and internal organs. Getting hit by 556 in the center of the plate probably feels like having a major league baseball pitcher aiming for your bare chest, and it might break some ribs. With 7.62x39/51 you are probably going to have one or more broken ribs.
