I'm 71 year old woman born in Finland with fair skin and blonde hair, moved to Australia QLD 37 years ago. I sunbake in the middle of the day when it's warm enough. I don't burn my skin because I take Astraxhantin 12 mg a day. I get a tan but don't get burnt. You will think that my skin must be in really bad condition because I don't use any sun creams or blocks , but no Sun is our friend , it gives us Vitamin D (with my sunbaking I get at least 20,000 IU) and melatonin naturally but I take magnesium Glycinate as supplement. I'm healthy and energetic. Thank you Dr. your videos are precious.
No the sun is a monster especially for pale skins my family has had skin cancer, as our skin is very fair, I've always used sun screen and have no wrinkles as a result. My father, uncle and grandfather all had bits cut out if their face. The worst is my uncle who has had virtually all of the top of his head removed due to skin cancer and gas to wear a hat. (He's just had more removed) I'm 61 my uncle is 78. If people don't use sunscreen they will reap what they sow. Sadly!
@@sevenwatson5854 That sounds like Basal cell carcinoma and comes from being repeatedly sunburned, happens to people who work outside like farmers and road workers and landscapers. You just remove the spot and carry on. If you damage a cell repeatedly it mutates. It starts as a small sore that doesn't heal or is irritated by clothing, early treatment is important.
Sun creams are toxic to the skin, I always check the ingredients, and there are toxins in them. We moved from the Islands to NZ ,my father never used Sunscreen on the island. It wasn't until we got to NZ,that he started putting it on his head and neck. He later got skin cancer on his head and neck, no coincidence there.

Dr Berg, I just wanted to let you know that you have indirectly saved my life, my sanity, and gave me the tools needed to be my own advocate when I knew something was wrong being multi- symptomatic with normal blood test! For 2 MONTHS! SCARY symptoms and felt I was in a metabolic storm! I dug deep on your videos for vitamins and discovered I was low in magnesium, which in turn caused me to not be able to retain sodium, chloride, B1. Thankyou for your comment I think I have similar symptoms . I WAS going to adk a similar 😢 I have digestive issues no gallbladder; and also I get air hunger bloating and deep burning in the pit of my stomach. I take the Tudca Betaine HCL and a digestive enzyme . When I eat. There is a combination of things going on with me. I don't know if those are too much that I am taking but I eat OMAD fasting between 16 or18 hrs a day window or eating 6/8 no snacking in between but I am not losing any weight. So I think it's a hormone problem but my doc thinks it's diabetes but Nobody in my family has it so it is not hereditary like he is telling me. I also have no symptoms of diabetes whatsoever so ever like the frequent urination or excessive hungervir thirst no craving for sweets. I have my hear that it could be hypothyroid because of how I am not losing any weight . I am currently at 147lbs. I JUST WANT TO GET UP ONEDAY WITHOUT FEELING LIKE A WRECK AND no PAIN ! I just wish Dr Berg could see my comment and answer. What if is going on with me. My doctor would not listen to me. He also told me to not listen to any UA-cam doctor especially Dr Berg. My GP only gives me the stuff she learned 30 years ago, (not open to anything new or different, does not believe in anything but drugs for symptoms} You have taught me to advocate for my own health and I cannot thank you enough.
I use Triple Paste (yes, diaper rash cream) on my face because of the zinc oxide in it. My skin has never looked better, and I will be using it for the rest of my life.
@jesusislord2164 Yes. It's called basting. You put a thick layer on and let it set a bit before you go to bed. It helped with the scaring I got from acne when I was younger. I hope it works for you as well. I found out about it from a dermatologist on UA-cam named Shereene Idriss. Love that woman.
Since going Keto and then Carnivores four years ago my dark spots have disappeared or are significantly lighter and so may still disappear eventually. I have always been a mostly outdoor person by work and recreation and the only time I needed to have some skin spots removed was when I thought I’d better start using sunscreen because I noticed my skin starting to age. That was about 10 years ago and my diet then was very high carb and I know now that I was definitely having signs of insulin resistance if not pre diabetic. Now I am still outdoors a lot, in Arizona, and rarely sunburn. I have been taking low level trace mineral supplements for other reasons but nice to know now that they are also an additional help to having healthy skin! Happy healthy 65 years young. ❤

Your advice helped my 83 year old mom get her blood pressure down to 116 over 60. I have her upping her potassium with nutritional yeast and taking D3 + K2. She was elated!! She’s already young and active for her age but had never gotten down that low. ❤❤❤

I am a redhead with numerous blistering sun burns in my childhood history. I could burn with 15 minutes of sun exposure. 3 years ago I purged my diet vegetable/seed oils, and noticed a marked improvement in some nagging health problems, mostly allergies, asthma, rashes and such. Last summer I noticed I was no longer getting sunburns like I used to. So I experimented, spending up to 2 hours in the midday sun with no sunscreen. No sunburn, just a nice golden glow. It has to be the elimination of the vegetable oils - nothing else has changed Try it!
I'm happy for you. There we see the Sun is not the culprit, it's everything else we stuff in our mouths. Good nutrition is so important. Skin cancers started to increase with the use of sunscreens and blocks and also the junk food, which are all carcinogenic.
I live in Australia and used to work for a doctor who took skin cancers off mainly older people. Having seen the effects of the sun on people with fair skin and who didn't have access to sunscreen, you would be shocked at what I saw.. The pain and disfigurement caused from overexposure to the harsh sun is something that you can't fully explain, especially to younger people.. If you want to ruin your health and body for a sun "glow" then go ahead. Just be warned when your older your skin and body will pay for it..
I have been subscribed to dr berg since the very early days of his UA-cam vlogs. I find him amazing - especially in USA where everything medical costs so much. He does all the research and background work and gives all of us the benefits of his hard work - I think he is an amazing man who has helped so many human beings - how wonderful is that! He well deserves all the kind words he gets. How about he gets an award for being a great humanitarian. 😊
I washed my face with dandruff shampoo for two months and every spot went away. I heard on another app that the spots may be a fungus (and my dermatologist agreed) so I used Nizoral every other day. Now I'm using it on my neck and chest. (I'm 56).
71 in six weeks. All my life I have been in the Australian sun. I have no skin issues at all. I guess there's genetics involved here, although my ancestry is mostly northern UK including Scotland. Ot maybe my diet has been better than I thought. On another note though, after decades of alcohol abuse, and being a high functioning alcoholic since 2017, I gave up two years ago, cold turkey. Now I never touch the stuff... but, that's not enough. Doc Berg, I found your channel, and I think that between us we have saved my life. I have lost 20 kgs. Ok. I'm bordering on being pre diabetic, but that is improving as well. No processed food here, ever. I just wish I could give up spuds... I guess that will come. Well good for you. And if you're making progress, then keep the spuds cooking. It will merely take a bit longer for you to reach your goals. At nearly 71, you have a nice 30 or so years ahead of you. I solute your cold turkey approach to giving up alcohol, you made it happen.
Dr. Berg, I started 1C. of wild blueberries every morning about a month ago. I also add 1T. of organic golden flax seed, freshly ground. And also, 1/2 C. of unsweetened Kefir. I've noticed recently the age spots on my arms, legs and face are fading. Along with a huge difference in skin elasticity. This is now my permanent breakfast.
@@carlye.3093 I love over easy eggs at lunch. I know you should start with high protein in the morning. I'm an insomniac for over 35 yrs. after Lyme (all 3 stages). I'm lucky I can get the berries in the bowl and not all over the floor some mornings...lol.
I'm a natural very light blonde, blue eyes and I'm not telling my age but I'm a tad older than you! I am not proud that I have rarely worn sunscreen and i do not have any dark spots on my skin. However, i have been interested in nutrition for many decades and taking supplements including zinc and selenium for all this time. Your video gives me an explanation about why i have dark spot free skin! Thanks!
I do not wear sunscreen either unless in severely strong sunny areas like Belize and then only on exposed areas. Sunscreen is more deadly than the sun.
I remember as a kid hating my freckles for fear of being called "freckle face". Now people get freckles tattooed on their faces because it's trendy. My freckles always got darker in the summer. Now that I am older my freckles have faded so much and I miss them now. Lesson learned, never let someone else make you believe you are not enough just the way you are! I can sunburn easily so I do the gradual tanning (15+minutes each day until tan then longer periods) and never need suntan lotion unless I am at a beach, the water always makes me burn. As I age ( I am the same age as Dr. Berg) I have noticed the brown spots (extra melanin production) on my arms and legs especially in the summer, my father used to be covered with brown spots in the summer, I used to think he looked like mosaic art. I love the sun, as long as it's not too hot out, for some reason as I have aged I have become very heat intolerant. When I am in the sun I feel better and can feel the benefit. In the winter when I hibernate I get down in my moods and don't feel my usual self and once spring hits things get better again. I try to go outside on sunny days in the winter but the cold temps detract from the positive feelings of doing it.
I enjoy your videos, I have learned so much! I am grateful that I do not have these aging spots and have always wondered why I do not have them, as both of my parents had them on their faces and hands. I am 81 years old🙂
You don't produce any vitamin D during those hours if you live farther from the equator. Vitamin D production and tanning is possible only when the sun is higher than 45 degrees, that is basically 4 hours around noon in summer.
What's interesting is that when I was a teen, I had sun spots on my upper arms (an area that would not tan) and one day our old country doctor said "why don't you put some Zinc cream on those spots?" I did, and they went away and have never returned. I think I shall buy some zink cream!
Valuable information, thank you Dr. However, it’s worth adding that for those who decide to supplement with selenium and zinc, they should not take them together, as they are antagonists. So, zinc in the morning and selenium in the late afternoon, around 5 PM 👌
@@Dancestar1981 All terrain is important: air, water, moving routine, radiation levels, stresses, etc. And the things that you do NOT eat: high processed "foods", especially fats, etc.

What about Greek yogurt? I take zinc before turning out the lights. I bicycle almost daily and get 2 hrs of sunlight doing so. I'm 75. I'm not seeing much, if any, appearance of spotting. I'm only now beginning to see wrinkling of the skin, mostly around the ankles. Me mum was British so I got her creamy white skin but it does tan, unlike her. Once a week (when weather doesn't allow bicycling), at the gym, I lay in a UVA/UVB tanning bed for 12 min. You have said that UVB is a great source of vitamin D for those whose bodies don't absorb the pill form. I use to laugh when I saw older people with their pill dispensers. Now that is me with 8 pills in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 5 at night. (all supplements).
Interesting, I remember reading that liver spots are also sometimes called sugar spots. It kind of makes sense since increasing sugar intake increases zinc depletion. Dave Aspery mentioned something I also found interesting about alcohol. It causes aldehyde production in the liver when processing alcohol to make it less toxic, and it somehow that causes glucose to attach to cells in the skin that cause tissue browning. Alcohol also depletes zinc. I noticed from a guy that went on the "Lion Diet" that he became more tan as he leaned up. Meat is high in zinc as well
Zinc in meat and seafood fair amount depending on how much you eat. The problem with zinc is it does not stay with you and must be replenished constantly.. The number one source for zinc is oysters.
@@mikepeek5655 Due to leaky gut that caused malabsorption, I have most symptoms of zinc & copper deficiency so I've gotten recent little spots on my hand. I started adding zinc caps & do supplement with selenium. Hope they go away!
Yep, I have a few and noticed each one appeared after I'd been drinking for an evening, back when I was drinkning quite a lot. It was enough to make me almost completely stop drinking alcohol as I wondered what else was going on inside. Now I can have an occasional drink and haven't developed any more. But I also have little pigment loss spots on my arms, I don't know if they're related. I'd really like to get rid of those if possible.
I also heard that applying aloe vera to the darkened areas, could help lighten them. I only just started, so no results, as of yet ❤ Thanks, Doctor, for all your hard work and for steering us toward healthy and natural remedies instead of pharmaceuticals!
Dr Berg, I read in William Dufty's book, The Sugar Blues, that refined sugar consumption causes sunburn. It's true! I spend lots of time in the Texas Sunshine, no sunscreen ever, and I never burn. And I'm Caucasian, reddish blond, and blue eyed. Even before going keto 3 months ago (thanks to you!) I would avoid consuming refined sugar before spending time outside.
I was in the hospital for a blood infection and noticed that I had developed liver spots on my hands. After having my blood purified to remove the infection, the liver spots disappeared. After I was released and went back to a normal life, they started to return as lots of foods and lifestyle choices are hard on the liver. I started taking 1 gram liver tablets from a bodybuilding supplement place and the liver spots disappeared again and having my liver tested showed no damage and very healthy. After 50+ years of smoking and eating whatever I wanted, that should not have been the case, but eating liver and taking liver tablets fixes the liver and removes the spots on the hands.
eating foods with lycopene regularly will help you to not burn in the sun. I eat tomatoes almost everyday. Watermelon and papaya, pink grapefruit and rosehip
I'm not surprised. When I was a vegetarian and close to vegan, I started getting skin sun damage. Now, I'm on a meat based diet which is helping. Diet, skin care products and now castor oil are helping to reduce the visible sun damage. I felt terrible on a plant based diet because I was nutrient deficient and deprived of enough protein and fat. Now, I have a heavy oxalate load to get rid of. I'd rather deal with oxalate dumping than continue on the path of eating piles of plants though.
I have been vegan for 20 years vegetarian for 35, and feel great. Also I look 15 years younger than others my age. With anything, the key is being mindful and balancing what you consume.

At first Use water quickly, spash over your head and eyes , or take your watery hands through your Hair. Then you can Use watery eye pads over eyes and forehead . The possibly overloading electric Energy will be removed. Rest a lot.
Selenium is an excellent antioxidant and one which I have taken for many years, but please be careful and don't over do it as it can be toxic at high doses.
Thank You Dr.Berg for a very informative video on aging spots. When I asked my family doctor what the spots were and how they got there, he basically told me not to worry about them - come with age. Ugh!
@@cindyboyett3462 I started using the Cicalfate and Tolerance line because I have Rosacea and it has really helped but of course diet helps more. I dont think all the products have Zinc but the ones I am using from Avene does.

Saw the doc the other day to get blood test results (I'm in my 70's). I know this is insane but everything, every test was perfect, liver, kidneys, cholesterol, etc, etc. Even lost 10 kilos! Physically though I'm looking a mess - it's true, you can't judge a book by it's cover. 😊
I am 79.5 and the same perfect score last week. He told me had the heart of a 20yr. old. I have not eaten any red meat for about 55 yrs. Dairy free for about 15yrs...Was a veggie for about 15 yrs. Currently eat some organic chicken and wild caught fish. Just about no processed food and rarely eat in restaurants and never take out. Salad every day with lots of different veggies. I eat 2 meals a day...just because I am not hungry in the morning... not on any strict diet. I have been cooking from scratch my whole life. My favorite food to cook are Italian, Asian.. Chinese, Japanese, & Thai. My fav beverage for lunch and dinner is loose Japanese genmai chai. So I am all over the place re: types of food, but always fresh and 99% organic.
I had an age spot the size of a quarter randomly appear about 10 years ago. Ive been taking your trace minerals, and D3 K2 zinc supplements for about 5 years, and applying Amazon's vit C serum for about 6 months and it has faded by about 80% so far.
@@rosenguyen435 I use Dr Berg's vit C pills, but the skin serum is sold by Amazon under their Amazon Basics product line. "Amazon Basics Brightening Vitamin C Serum." Its in a small brown glass bottle with a dropper applicator and an orange label. It think it might be around $11 usd.
The sun is great for you for many reasons, but i agree it is best in moderation. I don't use sunscreen but if I am going to be in the sun for a long time, I'll use coconut oil instead of sunscreen. Also, try drinking organic chaga tea. It has the most antioxidants of anything you'll ever find and it helps turn your skin the most beautiful tone.
I need a cheat sheet to help me remember why I'm taking all these vitamins! I'm taking A, B1 ,B2, B-6, B12, D-3, Magneium, Zinc, plus a couple more that I am out of and have forgotten what they are! I know they are helping me because if I don't take them for a few days, I can begin to tell it!
I got rid of a t-bar melasma on my forehead for 35 years and a nickel sized spot on my cheeck in two months in Hawaii. I had lived in WA state for 15 years prior . I used daily applications of noni gel, was in the sun there daily and ate two papayas daily. Now I do zinc and D3 living in the southwest.
Your voice is so soothing in this crazy world. I take astaxanthin for my digestion/elimination issues and I think it's staving off the 'liver' spots from all of those years spent in the sun. I can't 'eliminate' without it unfortunately so I'm not so sure if I should add more antioxidants to my stack.

You say Selenium is the precursor for glutathione? Most people don't even know what kind of selenium to buy, and you don't say. But my belief is the amino acid NAC is the precursor to glutathione. It is very useful for thinning mucus so the body can get rid of it more easily. Amino acids need to be taken with water on an empty stomach. NAC is what you want to have around the house.
Dr Berg, what are the known effects of autophagy on liver spots/hyper pigmentation? Since the pigmentation is encapsulated to limit further spread, does autophagy eventually remove these ‘waste cells’?

I'm olive complected, about the same as a paper bag :) and have no sun spots. Only a couple of new freckles. I had a big triangular one, I believe from getting sun filtered / or magnified thru auto glass when I was in my car all day for work, in the Southwest. I used lemon & vinegar for a couple of weeks ONLY, and put sunblock on it for a while too, and it's GONE. Hasn't returned in around 12 years. I'm almost 65. I do not run from the sun, I love it! And I haven't used sunblock in ages. I do take a LOT of supplements! (Not all of them every day, I rotate sort of depending on what I feel I need.) Eat a Lot of protein, almost zero processed foods, v. low carbs, v. low sugar
I got a new brown patch of skin on my face after spending a year driving big trucks in the sunny southwest. I'm guessing the sun and stress caused it. I'll try what you did!
@@marksavage1744 use sunblock where the sun hits you coming through those vehicle windows. Either it's because the windows are blocking some of the spectrum of light throwing it out of balance or it's because the glass is magnifying the light or maybe it's both. I don't even wear my regular eyeglasses when I'm walking around outside at least until my eyesight gets worse and I can't see where I'm going. The yogis believe the sunlight is good for your eyes. They even stare at the sun. I won't go that far but I don't hide from it either. I think the bright sunshine gives your pupils a workout in shutting as much as possible.

Had this problem and was frightened at the rate they would pop out - legs, arms, - randomly all over except my face. Since I started drinking cider vinegar water religiously, and eating healthier, they spots have faded - one I had that was fairly dark, you can't see it anymore. @@se5594 every single day I drink 32 oz waters with 2 tbsp of Braggs cider vinegar and touch of honey to sip throughout the day. I love the taste. Always have prepared in gallon size jugs in fridge and fill my 32 oz cup. This has replaced my decades of soda pop had. What an improvement in every way. Lost weight, all my stats are within normal range. I’m 61 and take no medications. Perfect blood pressure. Good mood. No more dark spots. I’m convinced it’s the cider vinegar.
@@se5594 Every, single day. Each week, I purchase a bag of lemons. I juice them and put the juice and the lemon rinds in a gallon size pitcher with a cup of Stevia (for baking). I add one half cup of apple cider vinegar with the Mother and add one tsp of NuSalt. By end of week, the pitcher is gone. Sometimes I splurge and add real raw honey instead of Stevia or half honey and half Stevia. It's the Most delicious beverage. Sometimes instead of water, I'll use diet soda. Mix and match the fruits. Yep - a fizzy drink with all the tang and tart one craves. I've also made this beverage using fruity teas, and have even used koolaid packs and fruity extracts, in with the lemon/vinegar mix. Sky's the limit. My brown spots are all but faded. Took several months of CONSISTENT drinking. I rarely experience digestive issues either.
I believe I was born low in zinc. Meaning, my parents were probably already deficient. I used to get sick with respiratory issues all the time. I now take zinc sulfate internally, and that's seemed to help. I have also been using a Zinc Niacinamide serum for my face. I already try to consume 2-3 Brazil nuts a day for selenium.

In order to get all the vitamins and minerals a person needs, one has to practically walk around with a vitamin store in one pocket, and a bank vault in the other!
My dermatologist is very holistic and she advised I take zinc. This makes me so happy to hear I've been on the right path. I take 100mg daily, purchased Dr. Berg's Vit D3 K2 which has zinc in it, so I'm just missing Selenium! My dermatologist also recommended I hydrate my skin with grapeseed oil. I use it on my face and all over my body. My elbows have gotten lighter and have never been softer!!
Just be careful taking that much zinc because you can make your copper level plummet which I can say from experience is no fun at all - caused me severe anxiety among other things.

I'm 71 year old woman born in Finland with fair skin and blonde hair, moved to Australia QLD 37 years ago. I sunbake in the middle of the day when it's warm enough. I don't burn my skin because I take Astraxhantin 12 mg a day. I get a tan but don't get burnt. You will think that my skin must be in really bad condition because I don't use any sun creams or blocks , but no Sun is our friend , it gives us Vitamin D (with my sunbaking I get at least 20,000 IU) and melatonin naturally but I take magnesium Glycinate as supplement. No the sun is a monster especially for pale skins my family has had skin cancer, as our skin is very fair, I've always used sun screen and have no wrinkles as a result. My father, uncle and grandfather all had bits cut out if their face. The worst is my uncle who has had virtually all of the top of his head removed due to skin cancer and gas to wear a hat. (He's just had more removed) I'm 61 my uncle is 78. If people don't use sunscreen they will reap what they sow. Sadly!
@@sevenwatson5854 That sounds like Basal cell carcinoma and comes from being repeatedly sunburned, happens to people who work outside like farmers and road workers and landscapers. You just remove the spot and carry on. If you damage a cell repeatedly it mutates. It starts as a small sore that doesn't heal or is irritated by clothing, early treatment is important.
Sun creams are toxic to the skin, I always check the ingredients, and there are toxins in them. We moved from the Islands to NZ ,my father never used Sunscreen on the island. It wasn't until we got to NZ,that he started putting it on his head and neck. He later got skin cancer on his head and neck, no coincidence there.

Dr Berg, I just wanted to let you know that you have indirectly saved my life, my sanity, and gave me the tools needed to be my own advocate when I knew something was wrong being multi- symptomatic with normal blood test! For 2 MONTHS! SCARY symptoms and felt I was in a metabolic storm! I dug deep on your videos for vitamins and discovered I was low in magnesium, which in turn caused me to not be able to retain sodium, chloride, B1. Thankyou for your comment I think I have similar symptoms . I WAS going to adk a similar 😢 I have digestive issues no gallbladder; and also I get air hunger bloating and deep burning in the pit of my stomach. I take the Tudca Betaine HCL and a digestive enzyme . When I eat. There is a combination of things going on with me. I don't know if those are too much that I am taking but I eat OMAD fasting between 16 or18 hrs a day window or eating 6/8 no snacking in between but I am not losing any weight. So I think it's a hormone problem but my doc thinks it's diabetes but Nobody in my family has it so it is not hereditary like he is telling me. I also have no symptoms of diabetes whatsoever so ever like the frequent urination or excessive hungervir thirst no craving for sweets. Since going Keto and then Carnivores four years ago my dark spots have disappeared or are significantly lighter and so may still disappear eventually. I have always been a mostly outdoor person by work and recreation and the only time I needed to have some skin spots removed was when I thought I’d better start using sunscreen because I noticed my skin starting to age. That was about 10 years ago and my diet then was very high carb and I know now that I was definitely having signs of insulin resistance if not pre diabetic. Now I am still outdoors a lot, in Arizona, and rarely sunburn. I have been taking low level trace mineral supplements for other reasons but nice to know now that they are also an additional help to having healthy skin! Happy healthy 65 years young. ❤

I am a redhead with numerous blistering sun burns in my childhood history. I could burn with 15 minutes of sun exposure. 3 years ago I purged my diet vegetable/seed oils, and noticed a marked improvement in some nagging health problems, mostly allergies, asthma, rashes and such. Last summer I noticed I was no longer getting sunburns like I used to. So I experimented, spending up to 2 hours in the midday sun with no sunscreen. No sunburn, just a nice golden glow. It has to be the elimination of the vegetable oils - nothing else has changed Try it!
I'm happy for you. There we see the Sun is not the culprit, it's everything else we stuff in our mouths. Good nutrition is so important. Skin cancers started to increase with the use of sunscreens and blocks and also the junk food, which are all carcinogenic.

I live in Australia and used to work for a doctor who took skin cancers off mainly older people. Having seen the effects of the sun on people with fair skin and who didn't have access to sunscreen, you would be shocked at what I saw.. The pain and disfigurement caused from overexposure to the harsh sun is something that you can't fully explain, especially to younger people.. If you want to ruin your health and body for a sun "glow" then go ahead. Just be warned when your older your skin and body will pay for it..

I washed my face with dandruff shampoo for two months and every spot went away. I heard on another app that the spots may be a fungus (and my dermatologist agreed) so I used Nizoral every other day. Now I'm using it on my neck and chest. (I'm 56).

71 in six weeks. All my life I have been in the Australian sun. I have no skin issues at all. I guess there's genetics involved here, although my ancestry is mostly northern UK including Scotland. Ot maybe my diet has been better than I thought.
On another note though, after decades of alcohol abuse, and being a high functioning alcoholic since 2017, I gave up two years ago, cold turkey. Now I never touch the stuff... but, that's not enough. Doc Berg, I found your channel, and I think that between us we have saved my life. I have lost 20 kgs. Ok. I'm bordering on being pre diabetic, but that is improving as well. No processed food here, ever. I just wish I could give up spuds... I guess that will come.

Dr. Berg, I started 1C. of wild blueberries every morning about a month ago. I also add 1T. of organic golden flax seed, freshly ground. And also, 1/2 C. of unsweetened Kefir. I've noticed recently the age spots on my arms, legs and face are fading. Along with a huge difference in skin elasticity. This is now my permanent breakfast.

I remember as a kid hating my freckles for fear of being called "freckle face". Now people get freckles tattooed on their faces because it's trendy. My freckles always got darker in the summer. Now that I am older my freckles have faded so much and I miss them now.
Lesson learned, never let someone else make you believe you are not enough just the way you are!
I can sunburn easily so I do the gradual tanning (15+minutes each day until tan then longer periods) and never need suntan lotion unless I am at a beach, the water always makes me burn.
As I age ( I am the same age as Dr. Berg) I have noticed the brown spots (extra melanin production) on my arms and legs especially in the summer, my father used to be covered with brown spots in the summer, I used to think he looked like mosaic art.
I love the sun, as long as it's not too hot out, for some reason as I have aged I have become very heat intolerant.
When I am in the sun I feel better and can feel the benefit. In the winter when I hibernate I get down in my moods and don't feel my usual self and once spring hits things get better again. I try to go outside on sunny days in the winter but the cold temps detract from the positive feelings of doing it.
For the moods try taking d3 in higher doses in winter in particular.
I always thought freckles were cute on girls and boys when in school. I'm happy that you have accepted and even learned to appreciate them! ;-)

The solution to melanin-sun exposure paradox is this: sun exposure from 5-9 am and 4-6 pm (with variations depending upon the season)
You don't produce any vitamin D during those hours if you live farther from the equator. Vitamin D production and tanning is possible only when the sun is higher than 45 degrees, that is basically 4 hours around noon in summer.

What about Greek yogurt? I take zinc before turning out the lights. I bicycle almost daily and get 2 hrs of sunlight doing so. I'm 75. I'm not seeing much, if any, appearance of spotting. I'm only now beginning to see wrinkling of the skin, mostly around the ankles. Me mum was British so I got her creamy white skin but it does tan, unlike her. Once a week (when weather doesn't allow bicycling), at the gym, I lay in a UVA/UVB tanning bed for 12 min. You have said that UVB is a great source of vitamin D for those whose bodies don't absorb the pill form. I use to laugh when I saw older people with their pill dispensers. Now that is me with 8 pills in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 5 at night. (all supplements).
Interesting, I remember reading that liver spots are also sometimes called sugar spots. It kind of makes sense since increasing sugar intake increases zinc depletion. Dave Aspery mentioned something I also found interesting about alcohol. It causes aldehyde production in the liver when processing alcohol to make it less toxic, and it somehow that causes glucose to attach to cells in the skin that cause tissue browning. Alcohol also depletes zinc. I noticed from a guy that went on the "Lion Diet" that he became more tan as he leaned up. Meat is high in zinc as well
Zinc in meat and seafood fair amount depending on how much you eat. The problem with zinc is it does not stay with you and must be replenished constantly.. The number one source for zinc is oysters.
@@mikepeek5655 Due to leaky gut that caused malabsorption, I have most symptoms of zinc & copper deficiency so I've gotten recent little spots on my hand. I started adding zinc caps & do supplement with selenium. Hope they go away!
Yep, I have a few and noticed each one appeared after I'd been drinking for an evening, back when I was drinkning quite a lot. It was enough to make me almost completely stop drinking alcohol as I wondered what else was going on inside. Now I can have an occasional drink and haven't developed any more. But I also have little pigment loss spots on my arms, I don't know if they're related. I'd really like to get rid of those if possible.
Alcohol greatly depletes vitamin B1. I highly recommend fat soluable benfotiamine.

Dr Berg, I read in William Dufty's book, The Sugar Blues, that refined sugar consumption causes sunburn. It's true! I spend lots of time in the Texas Sunshine, no sunscreen ever, and I never burn. And I'm Caucasian, reddish blond, and blue eyed. Even before going keto 3 months ago (thanks to you!) I would avoid consuming refined sugar before spending time outside.
I was in the hospital for a blood infection and noticed that I had developed liver spots on my hands. After having my blood purified to remove the infection, the liver spots disappeared. After I was released and went back to a normal life, they started to return as lots of foods and lifestyle choices are hard on the liver. I started taking 1 gram liver tablets from a bodybuilding supplement place and the liver spots disappeared again and having my liver tested showed no damage and very healthy. After 50+ years of smoking and eating whatever I wanted, that should not have been the case, but eating liver and taking liver tablets fixes the liver and removes the spots on the hands.
eating foods with lycopene regularly will help you to not burn in the sun. I eat tomatoes almost everyday. Watermelon and papaya, pink grapefruit and rosehip

I'm not surprised. When I was a vegetarian and close to vegan, I started getting skin sun damage. Now, I'm on a meat based diet which is helping. Diet, skin care products and now castor oil are helping to reduce the visible sun damage. I felt terrible on a plant based diet because I was nutrient deficient and deprived of enough protein and fat. Now, I have a heavy oxalate load to get rid of. I'd rather deal with oxalate dumping than continue on the path of eating piles of plants though.

I have been vegan for 20 years vegetarian for 35, and feel great. Also I look 15 years younger than others my age. With anything, the key is being mindful and balancing what you consume.

Selenium is an excellent antioxidant and one which I have taken for many years, but please be careful and don't over do it as it can be toxic at high doses.

Saw the doc the other day to get blood test results (I'm in my 70's). I know this is insane but everything, every test was perfect, liver, kidneys, cholesterol, etc, etc. Even lost 10 kilos! Physically though I'm looking a mess - it's true, you can't judge a book by it's cover. 😊

I am 79.5 and the same perfect score last week. He told me had the heart of a 20yr. old. I have not eaten any red meat for about 55 yrs. Dairy free for about 15yrs...Was a veggie for about 15 yrs. Currently eat some organic chicken and wild caught fish. Just about no processed food and rarely eat in restaurants and never take out. Salad every day with lots of different veggies. I eat 2 meals a day...just because I am not hungry in the morning... not on any strict diet. I have been cooking from scratch my whole life. My favorite food to cook are Italian, Asian.. Chinese, Japanese, & Thai. My fav beverage for lunch and dinner is loose Japanese genmai chai. So I am all over the place re: types of food, but always fresh and 99% organic.

I had an age spot the size of a quarter randomly appear about 10 years ago. Ive been taking your trace minerals, and D3 K2 zinc supplements for about 5 years, and applying Amazon's vit C serum for about 6 months and it has faded by about 80% so far.

The sun is great for you for many reasons, but i agree it is best in moderation. I don't use sunscreen but if I am going to be in the sun for a long time, I'll use coconut oil instead of sunscreen. Also, try drinking organic chaga tea. It has the most antioxidants of anything you'll ever find and it helps turn your skin the most beautiful tone.
I need a cheat sheet to help me remember why I'm taking all these vitamins! I'm taking A, B1 ,B2, B-6, B12, D-3, Magneium, Zinc, plus a couple more that I am out of and have forgotten what they are! I know they are helping me because if I don't take them for a few days, I can begin to tell it!
I got rid of a t-bar melasma on my forehead for 35 years and a nickel sized spot on my cheeck in two months in Hawaii. I had lived in WA state for 15 years prior . I used daily applications of noni gel, was in the sun there daily and ate two papayas daily. Now I do zinc and D3 living in the southwest.
Your voice is so soothing in this crazy world. I take astaxanthin for my digestion/elimination issues and I think it's staving off the 'liver' spots from all of those years spent in the sun. I can't 'eliminate' without it unfortunately so I'm not so sure if I should add more antioxidants to my stack.

You say Selenium is the precursor for glutathione?
Most people don't even know what kind of selenium to buy, and you don't say. But my belief is the amino acid NAC is the precursor to glutathione. It is very useful for thinning mucus so the body can get rid of it more easily. Amino acids need to be taken with water on an empty stomach. NAC is what you want to have around the house.

Dr Berg, what are the known effects of autophagy on liver spots/hyper pigmentation? Since the pigmentation is encapsulated to limit further spread, does autophagy eventually remove these ‘waste cells’?

I'm olive complected, about the same as a paper bag :) and have no sun spots. Only a couple of new freckles. I had a big triangular one, I believe from getting sun filtered / or magnified thru auto glass when I was in my car all day for work, in the Southwest. I used lemon & vinegar for a couple of weeks ONLY, and put sunblock on it for a while too, and it's GONE. Hasn't returned in around 12 years. I'm almost 65. I do not run from the sun, I love it! And I haven't used sunblock in ages. I do take a LOT of supplements! (Not all of them every day, I rotate sort of depending on what I feel I need.) Eat a Lot of protein, almost zero processed foods, v. low carbs, v. low sugar
I got a new brown patch of skin on my face after spending a year driving big trucks in the sunny southwest. I'm guessing the sun and stress caused it. I'll try what you did!
@@marksavage1744 use sunblock where the sun hits you coming through those vehicle windows. Either it's because the windows are blocking some of the spectrum of light throwing it out of balance or it's because the glass is magnifying the light or maybe it's both. I don't even wear my regular eyeglasses when I'm walking around outside at least until my eyesight gets worse and I can't see where I'm going. The yogis believe the sunlight is good for your eyes. They even stare at the sun. I won't go that far but I don't hide from it either. I think the bright sunshine gives your pupils a workout in shutting as much as possible.
@@marksavage1744 if it's only on your driving side I would strongly suspect it's the truck. I only had the one on my left side where the sun was coming in while I was driving around

A basil cream could probably help with that, I can just eat basil pesto for a few days and tell a difference in my skin, especially the face.
Had this problem and was frightened at the rate they would pop out - legs, arms, - randomly all over except my face. Since I started drinking cider vinegar water religiously, and eating healthier, they spots have faded - one I had that was fairly dark, you can't see it anymore. Always have prepared in gallon size jugs in fridge and fill my 32 oz cup. This has replaced my decades of soda pop had. What an improvement in every way. Lost weight, all my stats are within normal range. I’m 61 and take no medications. Perfect blood pressure. Good mood. No more dark spots. I’m convinced it’s the cider vinegar.
@@se5594 Every, single day. Each week, I purchase a bag of lemons. I juice them and put the juice and the lemon rinds in a gallon size pitcher with a cup of Stevia (for baking). I add one half cup of apple cider vinegar with the Mother and add one tsp of NuSalt. By end of week, the pitcher is gone. Sometimes I splurge and add real raw honey instead of Stevia or half honey and half Stevia. It's the Most delicious beverage. Sometimes instead of water, I'll use diet soda. Mix and match the fruits. Yep - a fizzy drink with all the tang and tart one craves. I've also made this beverage using fruity teas, and have even used koolaid packs and fruity extracts, in with the lemon/vinegar mix. Sky's the limit. My brown spots are all but faded. Took several months of CONSISTENT drinking. I rarely experience digestive issues either.

I believe I was born low in zinc. Meaning, my parents were probably already deficient. I used to get sick with respiratory issues all the time. I now take zinc sulfate internally, and that's seemed to help. I have also been using a Zinc Niacinamide serum for my face. I already try to consume 2-3 Brazil nuts a day for selenium.

My dermatologist is very holistic and she advised I take zinc. This makes me so happy to hear I've been on the right path. I take 100mg daily, purchased Dr. Berg's Vit D3 K2 which has zinc in it, so I'm just missing Selenium! My dermatologist also recommended I hydrate my skin with grapeseed oil. I use it on my face and all over my body. My elbows have gotten lighter and have never been softer!!

Just be careful taking that much zinc because you can make your copper level plummet which I can say from experience is no fun at all - caused me severe anxiety among other things.
