  • The Beatles fourth album from December 1964 didn’t even get a proper release in the USA, and for the longest time has been treated as the runt of the litter. It is an essential album from a group who in a year had become the most famous people in the world; an album born from touring the world and meeting Bob Dylan. It’s time to listen to it again.
Live on tape from Dublin and Belfast, it’s Nothing Is Real.

John was very fond of Baby's in Black, even as late as in 1980 when he gave his final interviews and gave his opinion on the Beatles catalogue. It's such a John&Paul song through and through, they wrote it together and sang it together form start to end in the same mic on tours, until the very last show.

I think Paul gave a few tunes 2 Peter & Gordon around this time.

Seeing as BFS was the one original Beatles album my Dad decided to add to his - admittedly fairly small - vinyl collection in the early 70s ( the other Beatles record being the Red Album ) I have fond memories of listening to it since I was four-five years old. I distinctively remember sitting on the floor with the gatefold spread out on my little knees and staring at the inside pictures while listening to it. Then as a teen in 1985-87 I rediscovered the album and had to tape the songs I liked most on a blank TDK tape, as you did in the 80s, hahah. Spent many hours listening to that tape and dancing around to Rock And Roll Music and Honey Don't ( which I loved! ) My favs overall were always No Reply and I'll Follow The Sun. In 2009 when the remasters came out I got the box set and finally heard the record again after not having heard it since the late 80s, and it was a pretty emotional experience. It sounded great! So yeah, we go back a long way, me and Beatles For Sale ❤️

I have to say that of all the delights that came out of Anthology "Leave My Kitten Alone" was the highlight and I will remain so forever I think.. As for listening to it again... I do, at least once a year... and that's a lot since the 60's

No Reply, I'm A Loser, Baby's In Black, I'll Follow The Sun, I Don't Want To Spoil The Party, Rock And Roll Music, Kansas City, Eight Days A Week, Words Of Love and Every Little Thing are all amongst my favorite Beatles songs. This is in my top 5 Beatle albums.

It may not be their ' most cohesive album , but it's still a great record .Some great originals ( No Reply , Every Little Thing , I'll Follow The Sun and I'm A Loser ) .And their' interpretation of Rock And Roll Music is one of the greatest rock and roll recordings ever made .

Ringo said his ride cymbal pattern on “I Feel Fine” was influenced by the drumming on the Ray Charles song “What I Say”.

Have to disagree with any criticism of this album, lol. The period from BFS to Revolver is my favorite Beatles period and BFS is so essential to my Beatles experience. Couldn't find it in early 80s US when I was 12 and just getting into the band. Located it in a record store 3 hours from my house and my dad drove me all that way to get it. The touch and feel of the album cover itself, it was an original, was just entrancing. The cover picture itself is probably my favorite Beatles cover. And the music. To say he hates Baby's in Black is just blasphemy to me, lol. I love it, I really think this is their first foray into folk for real and I just love it. Anyways, great podcast!±

I always had the feeling that the sound of that album was a tribute to Carl Perkins. Especially George's guitar style. And I don't mean two Perkins songs. "I don't wanna spoil the party" or "I'm a looser" solos, for example.
Of course there is a relationship between Get Back sessions and "For Sale" project. "Mr. Moonlight" or "Everybody's trying to be my baby" were part of their repertoire in Hamburg. And when Beatles worked against the clock, they always took advantage of all that material. If they had only done their own songs on that album, they would have made more money, but there was no obligation that prevented them from doing covers.

I suppose, not having had that experience with "Oh Dear, What Can the Matter be?", could be the reason why I like "Baby's in Black". That and the somewhat dissonant lead guitar part- and the vocal harmonies.

The opening riff of ‘What you’re doing’ predates‘Tambourine Man’... Perhaps George’s borrowing of the Byrds’ ‘Bells of Rhymney’ was not the first in an ongoing series of guitar riffs’ exchanging .

The ´Been for a shit’ bit is from an old joke. My Dad grew up in very north Wales and the joke is essentially a man is quietly in love with a neighbour and is screwing up the courage to speak to her. He sees her by the outside toilets and blurts out ‘been for a shit is it, Blodwyn?’ I think Megan must be the Scouse or at least not Welsh version of the girl.
The joke must be pretty old cos there is a row of communal outdoor toilets and that’s much less common after post war Corporation housing came in. My Dad was born in ‘53 and I think my Nan knew the joke too.

Great episode! Just now discovering the show, really digging it.
I think the Beatles for Sale suffers mainly from problematic song selection and sequencing. I’ve been going through the early albums and doing some resequencing where I feel it’s appropriate. I’ve also been going back and adding the relevant singles to each of the early and mid-period albums, and taking off some of the tracks that have never appealed to me, even after years of listening. Here’s my attempt at a much better sequence for Beatles for Sale:
    A1.I Feel Fine
    A2.Eight Days a Week
    A3.No Reply
    A4.I’m a Loser
    A5.Baby’s in Black
A6.I Don’t Want To Spoil the Party
    A7.Rock and Roll Music
    B1.What You’re Doing
    B2.She’s a Woman
    B3.I’ll Follow The Sun
    B4.Words of Love
    B5.Every Little Thing
B6.Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby
    B7.Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey
I think that the album in this form would be much more highly regarded. What do you think?

Do you know any Beatle/Liverpool background ? All the Liverpool bands did Mr Moonlight, the Merseybeats had a hit with it. Personally I think the organ is great, it's just that youse don't get it.

Its a really good album unfairly regarded in my opinion. The originals are great
people forget that if you included the single I FEEL FINE/SHES A WOMAN or even LEAVE MY KITTEN ALONE (recorded at the Sessions) on it (perhaps leave out Mr Moonlight & Words of love) its even stronger. Also like "With The Beatles" it didnt didnt have the advantage of including the singles recorded at the sessions unlike the acclaimed "Hard Days Night " Album Including the singles undoubtedly strengtherns its tracklist. 4 Albums in 21 months not too shabby!!!!! great discussion

Don't forget how tired these boys were! Filming A Hard Day's Night, countless show's and live shows, TV appearances, interviews and not a lot of time spent on writing original music. They are worn out, exhausted even. John and Paul still shined as always as writers and vocalists, but George and Ringo weren't writing original music yet.
    Yeah, yeah, yeah!

I think it’s their best early (pre-Rubber Soul) album. How can anyone say an album with ‘Every Little Thing’, ‘I’m a Loser’ ‘What You’re Doing’ etc...be considered a ‘bad’ album?
I even like the covers (including Mr. Moonlight) and their version of ‘Words of Love’ is incredible.

I listen to your videos and I do enjoy them but speaking in pure Irish Scouse " you don't half talk shite". 8 great tracks out of 14 tracks written by Lennon and McCartney and 6 classics by writers they admired and that they always did on stage. What the feck do you want? Or are you just filling another NisReal slot.

I think Ringo is great. He’s a solid drummer and has a very warm and charming voice which suits most of the songs The Beatles wrote for him.
I just cannot stand ‘Don’t pass me by’.
I’ve no problem with Ringo’s other self-penned songs. ‘Octopus Garden’, ‘It don’t come easy’, ‘Photograph’ & ‘Back off Boogaloo’ are all outstanding (well, not entirely ‘self-penned’. I think George Harrison helped out quite a bit).
Btw, I really like ‘What goes on’.
This is an example of the warm and charming Ringo vocal I mentioned above.
