  • When the Beatles put out their eighth album in May 1967, the consensus was that nobody needed to release any more records ever - it was just that good. In this episode, the first of two parts, Steven & Jason look at how the album came together.
Live on tape from Dublin, it’s Nothing Is Real.

as much as Sgt Pepper is very much a Paul album, i do think it’s Ringo’s finest moment in The Beatles. his best vocal, his best drum sound (which really grounds the record in reality keeping it on the rails) and he was Billy Shears, after all.

As great as they were as a double A side single, do wish Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane was instead saved for Sgt.Pepper.

I hear you. I, too, was hoping for outtakes of "It's Only a Northern Song" on the'17 box set.

The Band’s “Tears of Rage” which was written in 1967 during the Basement Tapes sessions with Dylan has a similar sympathetic cross generational lyrical theme.

After hearing what Lewisohn and various ex-Beatles have said about "Carnival of Light", I must admit that I'm not even curious anymore.

It's obviously John doing the "Ahhhs" in A day in the life. Paul has said so. He had to make sure to get the middle eighth done in time because otherwise it would have wiped Johns ahhhs(lol). And John wouldve been pissed if he had to come in and do it over.

It's not just a Paul album, it contains 2 of John's greatest songs.

Do we know what the Beatles thought about Jimi Hendrix covering the track 'Sgt Peppers' at the famous Hendrix debut?.

In McCartney 3-2-1, Paul seems very pleased and excited by it.

I used to think the ahhhhs were Lennon, but convinced they’re Paul now.

Not sure if I am remembering this correctly but I think you can't unhear this on UA-cam thought the aaahs were think John starting it and then Paul picking it up in the middle... So it's both John and Paul?

Questionable decision to release SF/PL single as a post-Christmas single and deprive the SPLHCB album of what may have been its flagship tracks. Truly bizarre decision.

Very enjoyable thanks. But I went searching for your white album review and I don’t see one! Despite there being many other reviews of other Beatles spin-offs. Why is there none??!

The sound of the horns on Good Morning doesn’t hold up. It’s a Lennon throwaway.

You're not supposed to hear the dog whistle -- that's the whole point. It was there for dogs, not humans. (Paul talks about this in McCartney 3-2-1.)

That is surely Lennon singing "ahh' A Day In The Life.
Doesnt even sound like McCartney to me.

Lennon’s best is prior to Pepper but Paul was still “getting better” during and after.

Sgt Pepper blew my mind for years, but I gradually began to see it for a lot of glam from Paul and G. Martin.

Which album is better? I am old now, and grew up listening to the Beatles. While Revolver and Abby Road are good albums, they are not great, like the big 3. Revolver has that old, twangy sound of the early Beatles, and Taxman starts it off on the wrong foot for me. Abby Road sounded like a completely new band, and while a couple songs changed the direction of rock and roll, it was not the complete album. It merely signalled the downfall of a great band.

The only Lennon song on Pepper that belongs among his best is Kite. IMO.

I Always felt that Pepper was a bit too self Concious for my liking.I still like it but feel it was overproduced & Ploddy in places.(especially on songs like Shes Leaving Home.Within You & Without You) The Album lacks the seamless melodic brilliance of their earlier work, and relies too much on production trickery.Songs like the much lauded A Day In The Life for example has elements of greatness but somehow loses its itimacy due to the production,The self impotance of Pepper for me is sumed up in the "Id Love to turn you on" line which really feels forced musically, very un-beatle like up to this point in time.
Revolver for Me is a far better Album for me,it has stronger songs which have experimentation and depth, but with a lightness of touch, and songs that dont over stay their welcome...Maybe I would have appreciated Pepper more if id been old enough to remember the
impact it had on the music scene when it came out.Its A great Album but far from being the best Beatle Album in my opinion.
Anyway All respect many thanks great discussion as usual
