Well said. Some of their best covers as well. Great sort of grey day album, and one of my favorites. The Get Back movie showed us to not pay too much attention to these traditional Beatle narratives, and I’m just gonna focus on the music, which is top notch here ❤

Totally agree with you. Very underrated album. Always been one of my favourites, containing some of their finest early compositions. Its mood is more ambiguous and introspective than the earlier albums. Moving on from the glorious Merseybeat shout of "She Loves You" and "Hard Day's Night". The country/acoustic feel is apparent, and this would be developed on Help and more so on Rubber Soul. Lyrically I think it was their strongest album to date too. With some good stories to tell. Hard to pick my favourite tracks because there are so many good ones. But at a push I'd go for "No Reply", "Eight Days a week" and "I don't want to spoil the party".

John, Some years ago, Mark Lewisohn was commenting on early Beatle L.P's. One of the L.P's he's grown more and more fond of over the years is "Beatles For Sale." Just listen to it it's brilliant. Cheers, Chris Perry

Thank you! I agree that Beatles for Sale is one of their best albums. I like how the first three songs have the acoustic guitar up front and appreciate the tone, tough sad. As you shared, the Beatles as a band at this point were a tight creative musical unit as they were playing so many gigs and it shows on this album. Every Little Thing continues to be in my top five Beatles songs...the harmonies, the introduction of a piano or drum riff at key moments to emphasize the feelings being shared. The chorus is so hopeful.

    Hi,
Thanks to my neighbor I got into The Beatles. He asked me to listen to a record by The Beatles. It was in springtime in 1976, being 13 years old. The record he put on was Beatles For Sale. ....... "This happened once before" ...... and I was hooked and still am.
Beatles For Sale, for me, has a special place in their catalogue, thanks to my neighbor for letting me hear something else in a time when I was listening to glam and top 40 hits from that moment.

"I Don't Want to Soil the Party" is remarkably adult: "I've had a drink or two and I don't care". Singing about drinking was not common in music for "teenagers".
"Baby's in Black" means mourning, not necessarily death. Great song -- and for those who don't like it: ask your parents what a "waltz" is.

Has anyone heard the live version of "Baby's in Black" from their brief Beatles For Sale tour of Germany at the end of 1965, just before they stopped touring for good? It was never one of my favorite early Beatles' songs. In fact, I might have said it was one of my least favorite Beatles' songs until I saw those live versions. John and Paul share a microphone and are just laughing through the whole song like they know a secret about the song they are not sharing with the rest of us. Even George is laughing hard at whatever the joke was, chipping in on the vocals, and delivering a killer, if only 12 second, solo. Like I said I was not previously a huge fan of the song, I was surprised I still remembered all the lyrics but I listened to all the available versions from this tour and it is such a joy to see them laughing and giving it their all on that song of all the songs they had written at the time. If you want to check it out, it will absolutely melt your heart. Thanks lads! There are a ton of good versions, but this is one of the best and most complete: ua-cam.com/video/xwuIHR_e4yI/v-deo.html

The Beatles film of Baby’s in Black is from June 24th 1966, there’s many You Tube versions with lots more details of this particular concert. As far as I know the Beatles never played in Germany in 1965, not until the summer of 1966. They only played in the U.K. in December of 1965!

About the third Beatles album I bought. It will always have a place in my heart. I love the cover photos, surely this album and not Pepper was the first gatefold sleeve, and so many overlooked great tunes! Well produced too. No Reply and Eight Days a Week could have been number ones if released as singles. The way I'll Follow the Sun was used on Anthology (their first time in Miami and being welcomed properly by the USA) was so well matched.

Hi, John. While this album would not make the top half of my Beatles rankings, I think it is historically underrated. I think part of the reason is that they followed the all-original A Hard Day's Night with an album that had six covers, which in some ways might seem like a step backward, especially for later generations who might not be aware of the circumstances of recording the album. But as you say, it has some of their best covers, particularly Words of Love IMO. John's songwriting definitely shows a step forward with songs like No Reply and I'm a Loser. Thanks for another excellent review.

  • @jnagarya519
    @jnagarya519 Рік тому +2

When one considers how much they did during 1964 -- from Paris to Ed Sullivan and America, then making "A Hard Day's Night" and writing all those 14 songs, then touring, it is amazing how with "Beatles for Sale" they sat in the studio as opportunity to RELAX, and it shows. Nothing on the LP is rushed or out-of-breath. And their extraordinarily affectionate cover of Boddy Holly's "Words of Love" is breathtakingly tender.

It's crazy to think that this album is not one of their best, i.e., a typical, excellent album. I didn't even know what a "cover" was when i first heard these. I just liked 99% of their songs. Nobody (at least that i'm aware of) could harmonize like John and Paul, whatever the reasons for that.

    • @jnagarya519
      @jnagarya519 Рік тому

@@rudolphguarnacci197 Agreed. And if one considers how insanely consequential that year -- Paris, United States, film "A Hard Day's Night," AND the 14 songs for that LP, then more touring -- and yet this LP is relaxed and warm.
And it shows both where they came from -- the covers -- and where they were in the moment. And what came next? -- "Rubber Soul".
That it is relaxed, and warm, and done as well as any of their LPs, are reasons it is in my top three favorites (with "The Beatles" [aka "White" LP] and "Rubber Soul".
It is later generation "fans" who discount and disparage this album because they don't know the history. And the current practice is to listen to a track here or there from who-knows-what LP/context.
Most of the later generations who've heard "The Beatles" have heard at most the half-dozen songs -- untethered from history and context -- that one would likely hear on "Classic Rock" radio stations.
How many would actually sit down and listen to an entire album, start to finish?
And also as essential listen -- the history -- are the live BBC recordings: those show where they came from, and are splendid performances.

"Underrated" and "less than..." are relative terms when we are discussing a group that represents the pop music equivalent of Shakespeare. Every original album of theirs (save probably the Yellow Submarine soundtrack) is five stars. This album finds them at the start of a transition, where they evolve from "Beatlemania" into the maturity of Rubber Soul. But it's still fantastic and also fascinating for that reason.

I've always had a soft spot for this among the earlier albums, possibly because I regard 'No Reply' in particular so highly. I'm old enough to remember hearing 'Eight Days a Week' when it was released as a single (here in North America, where much of the album was released as 'Beatles '65' - without that iconic cover), and it was the first single they put out that had me from first time I heard it. On the whole the album is a bit uneven in places (I don't think I'll ever grow to love 'Mr. Moonlight') but hey, cohesive albums weren't really a thing at that time in pop.

I was put off the album because of their miserable faces, so I did not play it immediately. I always think George's fabulous guitar work saves the day on Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby. That song plus Kansas City and Rock N Roll Music were recorded in one take. Flipping Heck. Did they not also recorded I Feel Fine and She's A Woman.on the same sessions? Eight Days A Week was another smash number 1 in the U.S.A. An E.P. in the U.K. No one ever mentions the montage they are standing in front of in the inner sleeve. Having said that, I love the album anyway. I like the advancement in their lyrics as well as the musical arrangements. I think as a package, their originals are better than those on the previous album. True, one or 2 of the covers let it down - but this is more than made up by most of the originals. If "Leave My Kitten Alone", "She's A Woman" & "I Feel Fine" had been included at the expense of 3 weaker tracks - well that would've changed peoples views.

I love the album. I remember buying mine in the late 70's as an import as I live in the US. I was enamored because the US albums were butchered and those songs were spread out over 2 American albums

I think it's an under rated album as well, John. Substitute Mr. Moonlight, with Leave My Kitten Alone, and that improves the album immensely. Agree with you on Everybody's.... not a great choice. Any follow up to the masterpiece A Hard Day's Night would have been a tough one. The originals are all top rate.

John is this a DMM? (A direct metal master), if you don't know if will say on the inside gatefold normally on the top right of the left half of the gatefold) because I love those UK DMM Beatles vinyl and am trying to get all of them. They did the same as the 87 CDs with the first 4 in mono and the rest in stereo. So far I have AHDN, RUBBER SOUL, REVOLVER, SGT PEPPER, AND THE WHITE ALBUM all in UK DMM. I want them because my late father in law had the rubber soul and Revolver DMM and I was supposed to get them when his daughter my partner was sorting his vinyl out and I put to the side those 2 but when the dealer came to take the ones I said he could have he took those as well, and I was gutted. I did get his 1970 UK let it be box set with lovely book and box and all bits, also got his 2 early original 69 abbey Road, also his numbered 68 mono UK white Album and the original live at the Hollywood bowl. But those 2 DMM gutted me so I'm trying to get the whole lot now

I think the main problem is that it is an uneven listen as a whole after the smooth AHDN. Eight Days A Week is not a very strong composition. It would have been on previous albums, but it misses the depth of let's say I'm A Loser by lengths. 1964 was Lennon's year. As for AHDN this wasn't much of a problem, because McCartney's songs were immensely strong, but on BFS his lack of material was quite obvious and contributed along with the covers to the unevenness. Just by adding I'm Down one could have saved it, yet it was wasted on a single. But was it a bad album? I agree with you, despite all the criticism, it the still an enjoyable album of a band sounding just fine with no weak Lennon composition.

"on BFS [Paul's] lack of material was quite obvious" I've often read that BFS was dominated by John's songs, and I understand that impression, but I think it's largely because John is vocally more present in the mix, not only on his own songs but also on the co-sung and co-written numbers and even on one of Paul's.
The primary composition credits look like this:
      "No Reply" - Lennon
      "I'm a Loser" - Lennon
      "Baby's in Black" - 50/50 co-write, Lennon/McCartney
"I'll Follow the Sun" - McCartney
      "Eight Days a Week" - 50/50 co-write, Lennon/McCartney
      "Every Little Thing" - McCartney
"I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" - Lennon
      "What You're Doing" - McCartney
So in fact they each contributed the same: 3 songs as primary writer and 2 as co-writer.

Beatles for Sale is often regarded as one of the weaker albums , but as with all their albums it has a certain charm and contains some fantastic tracks ie Babys in Black which has some great harmonies snd chord changes...for whst its worth i think Mr Moonlight is one of the worst things they ever did i personally cant stand it !

Mr. Moonlight sinks this album a bit for me but I like the other cover songs on here especially Kansas City. As for the original songs, they are all excellent imo and with hindsight you could see a lot of signs of what was to come on Rubber Soul and the second half of The Beatles' recording career.

Mr. Moonlight is awful; however, saying that, it appears to be a staple of their Hamburg time, one of their greatest periods of live performance. It seems they use it as filler, and, unfortunately, didn't transfer well to this production.

I see this album along with Let it Be as being ever so slightly under par at least by Beatles standards and for a similar reason. On BFS John is at the top of his game but Paul is not whilst on LIB it’s Paul who is at the top of his game and it’s John is not.
