This channel is NOT Mark Lewisohn's personal UA-cam channel.
But since Mark Lewisohn is indeed the greatest world-renowned and world-recognised Beatles historian and expert - most notably since his 1988 best-seller "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions" - we thought the man deserved a beautiful reference interviews channel !...
... So this channel is like a homage to Mark Lewisohn and a reference channel for his master subject The Beatles, almost like a public service kind of channel if you like !... This channel will be like a free and "un-monetized" central platform aimed at any english speaking Beatles student around the planet, and it will patiently collect and centralize all interviews and significant radio/podcast/video appearances Mark Lewisohn has made anywhere in the world, usually scattered around dozens of different sites and platforms on the internet, onto one single central channel for reference without monetizing its videos, for this is a purely educational reference channel for the connoisseurs, without any commercial nor business goal of any sort.
Therefore this "Mark Lewisohn - A Beatles Historian" channel is indeed a good deed !
SO PLEASE NOTE THREE IMPORTANT THINGS :
    A) None of these videos will ever be monetized so we're not robbing anybody here,
    B) A nice & gracious link to the original beloved source/podcast will of course always appear right underneath the video with the original source full name, and
    C) An UNCENSORED version of this Mark Lewisohn channel, ie. with all the missing interviews that were either blocked or taken down by UA-cam, is and will always be available there bit.ly/3IpYjWf

Mark Lewisohn has professionally studied the Beatles since the late '70s. Mark has worked for Paul McCartney himself from 1986 to 2001, for the Beatles' own company Apple Corps from 1991 to 1998, and has also collaborated with the surviving members for the enormous 1995 autobiographical "Anthology" project...
But beyond his extraordinary books and even beyond the Beatles themselves (!), listening to Mark Lewisohn talking about the Fab Four during those long conversations with various Beatles fans, Beatles experts and Beatles students from all around the world, is indeed a fascinating and informative experience in itself. It is a vibrant and breathtaking experience because it is like listening to a series of rich in-depth lectures on what life used to be like in the Western World after World War II, during the 1950s and obviously during the great legendary 1960s.
Hence the existence of this channel.
Mark Lewisohn's "ALL THOSE YEARS" Beatles historical biography that Beatles fans already casually call "THE THREALOGY BOOKS" :

I can’t thank you enough for this, Mark. You’ve cast light on an area of the Beatles career, so often, clouded in speculation and opinion.

The Liberty Bell is a large bell in Philadelphia that was cracked by a British bullet in the Revolutionary War. Paul's point was the crack couldn't be repaired.

I seem to remember -- although I can't find the quote -- Erin Torkelson Weber, who wrote 'The Beatles and the Historians', suggesting that if *John Lennon* ever claimed something represented 'the crack in the Liberty Bell' with regards to the Beatles, Mark Lewisohn would not only be *immediately* aware of what the Liberty Bell was, but he would go to Philadelphia and *worship* at the altar of the Liberty Bell.
      I'm paraphrasing, of course.

I don't know where I read it, but I remember reading that George was a bit surprised when he realized that the group wouldn't be making another album together, and to hear at the end of this interview that they were discussing what they would be doing later in 1969, that kind of backs that up. It's sad these days to know that they've been gone for so many years. I remember seeing them that night in February on the telly, and after that, there was always new music coming out. Apart from the movies they made, it was rare to see or hear them talk. It's not like we have it today where they're at our finger tips. I also remember after the Abbey Road album came out that there were rumors going around that they would be breaking up. At the time, I was involved with my own band and was busy doing that, and then word came out that they would be releasing another album! And there was all the new music that they were putting out too! And then the Let it Be album came out and it was very exciting! I did think it a bit strange that their hair was shorter on the new album then it was on Abbey Road... But I was in my own band, and busy... Then they were on the cover of Circus Magazine and the cover read, "Is this the end?" I trusted that magazine, and so I was very troubled about what could be happening to the group. None of us on the outside could really know, but Circus seemed to know something was in the works. Then the movie came out and I went with a friend to watch it. Afterwards as we were walking home from the cinema, my friend was ecstatic about having seem them on the screen, how wonderful they looked, and to see and hear them play! But although I was also happy to see and hear them, I was devastated, because I knew then that it was over. It's funny to remember how it was back then, how things did turn out, but at least they're still at our fingertips!

Great interview as usual Mark! Was wondering if you could elaborate on how you thought the Ron Howard documentary glossed over Beatles history. I saw it in the theater and thought it was a great film carried along by great music and performances. I was surprised to hear you criticize it! I've enjoyed your work since I read the Complete recording sessions when I was a young teenager. Please keep up the good work!

I would like some elaboration on that as well. I liked the film to an extent but I wished there were longer clips of performances rather than many but short. But I n=know Mark can elaborate articulately on why he believe it had shortcomings. I don't know if this is his own channel so he would not necessarily be reading these comments or requests of him.

Ron Howard’s film sucked. They fabricated historical facts and was done for a target audience of 12 year olds. Horrid

There was a lack of transparency. When the Beatles first arrived in America, they did a tremendous amount of partying. There were plenty of girls, and plenty of drinking. They are still adhering to the hard days night narrative. The Beatles were far less clean-cut than Ron Howard made them out to be. The statute of limitations is done. We can now start hearing the real story
I want to hear about Brian being inundated by shysters looking to make a buck off of his band.

I imagine Lewisohn has a much different perspective on the Get Back sessions after seeing the Jackson documentary. For example, he says no one bitches about Magic Alex's equipment failures. But it's clear from the show that all the equipment and wiring came courtesy of George Harrison and EMI and were set up by Glyn Johns. They laugh when John Lennon talks about what a nice little studio Apple has built, when all they seem to have really provided is a room.

    • @paulmurphy4267
      @paulmurphy4267 Рік тому

Yes, that's the difference between audio and visual, it is obvious on film that John is taking the mickey when he refers to the 'studio'. Indeed, there are several discrepencies in some of what Mark says here, and evidence to the contrary, which is unusual. Most notable, perhaps, is his somewhat watering down of John's, and Yoko's, heroin problems. Both of them admitted to being daily users on multiple occasions down the years, and there's a cigarette paper of semantic difference between being an addict and being a daily user. Possibly wishful thinking on Mark's part, he is such a nice, believe-the-best man. To say that John was 'too prolific to be hooked' is simply incorrect - there are virtually no Lennon songs commensurate with his 'H' time, with George berating him for his lack of productivity in 'Get Back'; and even if there were, there are any number of instances of 'functioning addicts', as the term is known - off the top of my head, Kurt Cobain made 'In Utero' and did 2 tours whilst hooked to the gills, Johnny Thunders toured and made albums each year, Keith Richards had the work rate of a insomniac beaver, etc. It's also interesting hearing Mark praising up J&Y's events, given the hammering he gave them in 'Recording Sessions'.

49:20 I find it smugly presumptuous of Mark Lewisohn in the podcast to expect his fellow chatters, after quizzing them as if HE knows the actual answer and all they can do is guess, to accept his corrective judgment on PM's position. Not one of the panelists asks, "Wait a minute - - how do we KNOW?" It would be the first thing I asked. The reasoning is plausible - - that showman PM would want a bigger venue or at least a more interactive one than the roof - - but that's not enough to warrant the assertion without evidence. Had I been that cavalier with polemic in my viva I'd have been sent back to the drawing board, so I'm unimpressed with Lewisohn here. I want to see/hear the evidence, in the way I see/hear evidence to the contrary in LET IT BE, and, more inferential, in GET BACK.
What I don't want to hear is the sound of 3 panelists and a webcaster throwing their brains out the window and Mark the Baptist so revered that his pronouncements are holy scripture.

Everything he said was supported by the commercial release of Get Back, and this interview was released well before that, so I have no idea what bloody rant you're on about.
