  • Help Me If You Can: Why is the Beatles Help! album, the home of Yesterday and Ticket to Ride, never spoken about with the same hushed tones as Rubber Soul or Abbey Road? Hosts Jason Carty and Steven Cockcroft think it over.

Act Naturally was part of of the Beatles 1965 tours. They would alternate between I Want To Be Your Man and Act Naturally. They sang Act Naturally on Ed Sullivan. I love George's Playing on Act Naturally both the record and live.

Agree so much with you guys about Help! Especially your comments about I’ve Just Seen a Face being brilliant and under-rated, but in hindsight we appreciate why Paul sang it on Wings Over America. I still feel Rubber Soul is better - and Michelle is a classic!

I love HELP, I was 12 and thats where I really became a Beatle fanatic, because of the music mostly but I still love the film!

"Paul By Numbers" would make a great album title! Just found your channel, enjoying the videos very much! Thanks for all you do.

To say that Help was the beginning of the end seems a bit dramatic. What made the Beatles awesome was that they had individual styles that when put together made them great. I'm glad that they weren't clones of each other. They all contributed as individuals to the greatness of the band. Michelle is a great song btw. Enjoying your channel!🍏

Help! and Ticket To Ride. Two stand out ground breaking songs on the Help! Album. We know the Beatles for their groundbreaking, innovative songs. Without these two songs, it could have been any band. Yesterday is a wonderful song, well loved because of its feel good aspect, I’ve just Seen A Face is a clever showpiece but nice songs, clever songs do not make a great band.
I think A Hard Day’s Night was a breakthrough song musically. Help takes the musical development and adds a lyrical dimension that has been missing til that point.

I think that a better ending song on the US Lp would have been the closing song played at the end of the film, with the credits rolling on. I am from the US, and I grew-up with US Lp version, but when I heard the UK version I was knock out. I love them both.

I have to say that I am with you guys in preferring Hard Days Night over Help but suspect that watching the film in the time that it was released had a different impact than watching it out of its particular era. I saw it in the cinema when I was 12 years old and it was just amazing. The effect of the colour film and the exotic locations was great. One of the moments in cinema that I will never forget is when "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" was being played, the whole cinema joined i with the "Hey" moments. Quite something.
Sorry Jason... I'm with Steven in not being on "Team Paul".... Sorry, hope you won't block me for that.

In the 1965 tours Paul sang Yesterday with a recorded string backing and the other Beatles went off stage. In 1966 it was all 4 Beatles playing Yesterday in concert. I like the studio version with the string quartet. But I really liked the live version with electric guitars and drums.

Not on the tours he didn't. The 2 television shows Blackpool Night Out and Ed Sullivan . They didn't even include the song until their brief UK tour in December 1965 when ( According to Lewisohn) Paul played it on electric organ.

@@scottandrewbrass1931 Sorry you are right, not on the 65 tours, just the TV shows. I was also wrong it appears saying he played with a recorded string quartet. I have recently seen photos of Paul practicing with a string quartet for the '65 Sullivan show.

That 'Yesterday' performance is from Blackpool Night Out.

Its underrated!!! I think the Album would sound more balanced if they had moved Tell Me What You See to the 2nd track on to side 1 and move The Night Before to strengthen up side 2.
I would also have included Im Down instead of Dizzy Miss Lizzy.(which for me doesnt really fit)
to bring more cohesion to the album as a whole.
The Album also gets criticism for being lightweight in places especially on side 2.For me songs like Tell Me What You See and Its Only Love/ Another Girl may be slightly lacking lyrically but still have wonderful melodies. This I feel gets overlooked especially by those who tend to praise later songs on Pepper./Mystery Tour/White Album/Abbey Road etc which use more production and psychadelic effects. Once again great discussion I love your humour many thanks. Help is a Top 5 Beatle Album for me

Another good discussion. Act Naturally is a very good Beatle performance if not a great song. The band is musically very tight on this track, which they play at a fast tempo. Ringo's voice may not be very attractive, but it has charm and what the others do in support of him is top notch, especially Paul's high harmony and George's country twang. It's a fun little Beatle moment.
Can't believe Girl is not considered as a 'top flight song' from Rubber Soul. Really? It's one of Lennon's best.

Just found your podcasts on UA-cam and am enjoying the honest opinions you offer.
I grew up with the US version of HELP! and only listened to one side.
And I’ve always hated the intro inserted before the title track on the US album.
HELP! is not a top five LP for me although it does have some good songs.
One of my favorites on this album is “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl”

I don't think Lennon had Acid that early in 1965....It takes days even weeks/months to fully recover from your first Acid trip.
There's a good interview with Paul's brother Mike on YT where he talks about Paul taking Acid the first time (which was in 1967).

    It is an outstanding album.
First side is excellent. Why don't people talk more about You're Going To Lose That Girl more! It is an absolutely banging tune I can't get enough of.
Second side not quite as strong. BUT Yesterday and I've Just Seen a Face are 2 outstanding close to being 10 out of 10 songs imo.
Yep Dizzy Miss Lizzy is a song I don't listen to. And Act Naturally is a bit average.
Other than that solid other songs. It's an amazing album.
But it is so hard to rank their albums. So for me it could go almost anywhere in their rankings in the top 11.
It is probably very slightly weaker than their very best, but by so so little.
We can look in depth at how clever things are. For me its all about how much you enjoy listening to a record and the Help album is right up there for me, but so are their others! Which makes it very tough to compare them.

Yes! You're Going To Lose That Girl is a great song! The only thing that distracts me while listening to it is Ringo's bongo playing. He doesn't play a consistent pattern hardly anywhere in the song, and sometimes they're just off. He was probably stoned? Lol

Song for song I think Help has better songs then Pepper .The title track , Ticket To Ride , Hey You've Got To Hide Your Love Away , I've Just seen A Face and Yesterday are some of their ' finest songs .The 2nd Best Soundtrack Album ever made after A Hard Days Night !

Of course it's all subjective but I, too, love the inclusion of the incidental music on the American release.

Audio on this one too soft for phone. The US cover is great, very show-bizzy, and seems to have been parodied on Magical Mystery Tour. But the UK cover seems to be a stab at Beatles concept art to come - not a big leap to an all-white cover when you see Beatles doing cod-semaphore on a white BG, with the title lamely added to protect EMI. Also, hatless Paul is the first of several differentiations: the turned back, the black carnation, the barefoot crossing. Help is a better, more progressive transitional LP than the uncomfortable, almost dire, Beatles for Sale, which would have been better marketed as Beatles for Free.

The discussion about the film took valuable time from discussing the actual album. You could have given SOME time to talk about You've Got To Hide Your Love Away which DOES have a strong combination of music and lyrics. You also could have touched upon the absolutely novel approach in The Night Before where Paul as a guy sings lyrics that you can only really imagine a female singing, especially in 1965! It's basically another take on the Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow-angle but coming from a guy it's very novel IMO.
The Help album absolutely has one of the strongest A sides in the catalogue, only marred by Another Girl and especially the usual George filler ( there, I said it, lol ) I roll my eyes when I hear people lament the small amount of Harrison songs on Beatles albums. Please! His stuff just wasn't up to par until he came up with Taxman ( with Paul having a big hand in that song ) and even then the other George song on Revolver, Love YouTo, is tedious at best.

I have to disagree that help is better than rubber soul, based on number of songs that are great. You didn’t mention “if I needed someone” (great) or “you won’t see me” (almost great).
    - also, I do like “you like me too much” I think it’s underrated, and I think help should have ended with yesterday. Perhaps “leave my kitten alone” could have been resurrected to replace “dizzy miss Lizzy”

I might rank this as their 2nd worst album after their 1st one. It has five amazing songs on it, 3-4 mediocre ones and 6 in between. My biggest problem is the sound is so muddy; especially on side 1. But what is poor for Beatle standards is still better than anything else out there by a mile.
