Indeed my friend, we can be grateful we were alive while the age of art was still alive. It seems since around the year 2000, art began to die. An example is Hollywood Remaking everything from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Again and again and again. Batman, godzilla, King kong, etc. The creativity is gone.
Imagine the pinnacle were the classical composers and sculptors of the last 3 or 4 centuries. Nothing like that exists now. You see it in all forms of art. Architecture is another one.

@edeledeledel5490 unfortunately an urban myth, whilst he was there it was far from the first time he had seen him play live , it was more likely the first time he had seen him play with dire straits but even that is unlikely, he was a seasoned gun for hire especially tours , still this is a masterclass , the difference between playing the drums and playing the fuck out of the drums, an absolute joy to watch

Mark Knopfler pretty much only uses his fingers when he plays guitar. There are very few exceptions where he uses a pick in some songs, but they are very rare.
Without a doubt Mark is one of the most famous fingerstyle guitarists. He is probably the most famous one in terms of playing fingerstyle electric guitar and doing rock n roll, and he is probably the best one as well.
I can't recall any other guitarist who plays fingerstyle in the same genre with an Electric guitar, and who has a level comparable to his in terms of fame, popularity, success and accomplishments.

Terry Williams played on the intro to Money For Nothing - the crescendo. It was a way of placating him for being replaced for the BIA album by Omar Hakim - recently with Sting and Weather Report. But Terry did the BIA tour with the band.
Terry Williams used to be in the band Rockpile before DS.
David Knopfler left the band during the Making Movies album in 1980.

Chet Atkins, the king of finger-style guitar picking, was listening to a tape of Dire Straits on his car stereo. He said to his passenger, who knew guitar, "that boy's heard me play a time or two, I think." Sure enough, Mark Knopfler at an early age had listened to a number of Chet Atkins albums and to say Chet had an influence on Mark's stylings on the guitar is an understatement. Lindsey Buckingham has also credited Chet as being a major influence in his guitar stylings. So, after listening to the Dire Straits tapes, Chet totally caught Mark off-guard by contacting him by phone, asking him if he wanted to do a collaborative album together. No way Mark could say no to his guitar hero. They hit it off with one another and ended up traveling back and forth between Chet's home in Nashville and Mark's home in London, recording the Grammy Award winning album, "Neck and Neck," along with making a number of videos from live performances they did together. Chet passed away at age 77, in 2001 -- just 11 years after the collaborative album with Mark.

Over the years information about Terrys role has come out. He only played the intro for money for nothing, he didn’t play on the album and in fact was sent home during the recording. He toured in 1985, 1986 and again played at the Nelson Mandela concert in 1988. When it came time do the last album, On Every Street, he again was sent home and didn’t appear on the album. This time he was replaced in the 1991 and 1992 tours. So, as good as terry was live (he’s my favorite) apparently he wasn’t the right studio drummer for the records.

Magic happens while of enjoy to doing music with passion , flow and for shure great creation by Knowledge . The chemistry between the entire band was breathtaking that Time .I would rank Mark Knopfler among Unic's top guitarists, there is no way to copy that style. Left hand like Jimi but playing righthand 3-Fingerstyle , singing like Bob Dylan but different . What a treasure of musical creativity was given to us by God's grace at this time. Unique, epic, enchanting, harmonious and full of dreams that needed to be lived.
Even Mozart would have enjoyed their way of telling a story with harmonies.

    @Chris-rw2be Рік тому +1

Alchemy was a brilliant album, because it was made with no overdubs or fixes. So, any stage noise or buzzes were left in. A lot of live albums have overdubs etc. Not here with Alchemy. What you saw and heard at the gig in July 1983 you hear on Alchemy.
If you want to get a lesson in dynamics, listen to Once Upon A Time In The West from Alchemy. It is lovely, better than the original tune on the 1979 album Communique - which is too spikey with an unsympathetic guitar tone.
Here there is warmth through the Schecter Strat sound Mark uses.
Mark always finer picks, apart from some rhythm parts and things like Expresso Love.
The way he can get that power out of the guitar in some of those bending string parts of the song is amazing. Not just one string but say two or three at once with his left hand, that part at the 9 minute mark for example. And the part at the 8.48 mark is just saying to people try this on for size. A master.

While you're working systematically through the Dire Straits albums, I would recommend slotting in some other live performances:
Rockpalast from their early days with the original 4-piece lineup. It's incredible how close to the album recordings they used to get.
Live Aid 1985 where they performed Sultans of Swing (with Sting) and Money for Nothing. They were on tour and performing at Wembley Arena at that time. They lugged their instruments across the car park to perform at Wembley Stadium and then back again to perform their evening gig.
The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert 1988 which they headlined. A chap called Eric Clapton stood in for rhythm guitarist Jack Sonni that night because his wife had just given birth. A 40-minute odd set that included the most emotional rendition of Brothers in Arms Mark has ever given.
Knebworth '90. The band played Money for Nothing and I Think I Love You Too Much, with Mr Clapton once again joining them. Hearing Mark and Eric trading solos on the latter number is something to behold.
Music for Montserrat. This concert was post-Dire Straits and was held at the Royal Albert Hall to raise money for the island of Montserrat after it suffered a major volcanic eruption. Many artists had recorded there over the years and it was where Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms album was made. Dire Straits numbers Mark performed included Brothers in Arms with a full the orchestra and he was joined by Sting, Eric and Phil Collins on Money for Nothing which had all the members of the orchestra and choir bopping away behind them. The whole concert is worth watching, packed with music legends all having a great time.
Oh and when you get to the end of the Dire Straits albums, the last one being On The Night - another great live album, don't stop there. There's Mark's solo albums, his albums with Chet Atkins and Emmylou Harris, the album he recorded with his other band The Notting Hillbillies and all his movie soundtracks including Local Hero and The Princess Bride. His body of work is just incredible. I almost envy you discovering Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler for the first time. 🙂

Mark is definitely a finger picker, i cant say he doesnt use a pick at times but ive never seen him ever use one. it gives him his distinctive sound by finger picking.

He is also a left handed person but when he was young his sister told him to try playing right handed so he did , so he had to teach himself to play with his wrong hand and also his special finger picking style. Probably made him a better guitarist by forcing himself to swap hands as he had to try harder and it paid off.
You should do Telegraph Road studio version which is a bit longer than the Alchemy Live concert version and it was my number one favourite song out of all music for 40 years and I refused to listen to these guys live because how could a live concert be better but boy was I wrong. The live telegraph Rd version on Alchemy Live is shorter but better.

Mark is without doubt the best Strat player of all time, playing with his thumb and first 2 fingers, not his finger nails, without missing a note.....A true genius of the guitar .

Also Mark very rarely uses a pick. I've only seen him use one for one song which is Espresso Love. But that's it. 99% fingerpicking. I love it too 😊

I play the guitar with a pluck it's unnatural, doesn't bounce like off the fingers. Or don't bounce players perspective.

NO that's not the best version, here he might be a little high or drunk, he forgot a few words or just changed them for fun.
and he a better guitar player, his new lead guitarist was week, compared to the guy that left the band same with the Keyboard.
maybe a off night with new members that not polished as his old band.
