  • In this video I show you how to make a vintage skirt bigger. This skirt is from the 1950's and has a huge sweep, allowing me to open up the skirt from a 23.5" waist to a 35.5" waist.

I love Stephanie’s vlogs. I have been sewing for decades and can still make crazy mistakes. I will fuss over cutting everything precisely on grain and then not notice that I sewed a section on backwards or some other such mistake that I feel even a first time sewer would never do.

That is something that is so simple! Using a different colour on the inside of a waist band! I think I will be doing that from now on!

I enjoyed that very much and it kept me laughing and kept my mind off my 70-year-old husband climbing up a ladder and going into the "attic" space for another project that he still thinks he is 30 years old that he can do.

I loved this video! I appreciate seeing that I'm not the only one who messes tiny things up every once in a while and I appreciate learning new ways to mitigate the little issues. Glad Liz Von Villas suggested you!

You are fun to watch. I could never make zippers look good using the method you did. I have been sewing since 1967. I found that pressing down the seam allowance first and teh basting in the zipper putting my stitches where my final stitchline goes to make it easy. Always use a zipper foot and never ever, ever sew next to the zipper pull. For a lapped zipper in a skirt, one side is pressed back at 1/2 inch and the other side is 5/8. The half inch side has the zipper sewed next to the teeth. Then pin the 5/8 inch side down and baste it in. There is a tiny pleat in the seam a!lowance of the 1/2 side to allow the 5/8 inch side to lap over the 1/2 inch side. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm a victim of inaccurate eBay measurements 😢 and I have a corduroy skirt to let out in the waist--the ad said it was 14" flat but it's really, really not 😅 had no idea what to do until I saw your vid!❤

That was an adorable skirt! And thanks, I have some old skirts of my Mom's and I think I will try to do this to a few of them. She had a 20" waist.... I don't..

Double line of stitching for gathering the skirt does make for nicer gathers that are actually easier to sew to the waistband, as annoying as it is to gather.

@@mdmaybe several years later, just popping in to say that the best service I did myself was buying a wooden seam ripper handle at a crafter's fair. It cost $30 (wayyyyyy pricier than the standard seam ripper) and I have to buy blade replacements every so often that, again, are every bit as much as buying a plastic seam ripper from Joann or somewhere. But I love that thing and the way it feels in my hand! It's so fancy and luxurious. Even if I hate needing to rip out seams, I love actually using the seam ripper. It was a great investment for the added joy to a dull task.
