    It appears some others were wondering about resizing sleeves, etc. I have a ton of vintage patterns to resize. I would, also love to see an extended video, explaining all the pattern pieces. Thanks so much for this, it was really helpful! I guess the smartest thing to do, if anyone has the time, would be to make a mock-up, first, out of a sheet, or something, just to make sure everything fits.

I have always been terrified of adjusting a pattern. At sewing classes I have always left that to the tutor. Thank you for this very informative video. Thanks for the video. I just found, after repeated hunting, two patterns from my youth that I totally want to wear again. No, definitely not 1960s hot pants or bell bottoms and midriff baring halter top at 70 and fat for me, but a pattern for a lounge dress I loved and triple armhole wrap dress I plan to make a swimsuit cover out of like my mom made for me. Bless you for this simple explanation.

    I never thought to buy a pattern in the wrong size, and re-size it. Thanks for all the info. I’ll check your other videos. My biggest problem is wrapping my head around how much ease is in a pattern and adjusting accordingly.

    • @OldTimePatterns
      @OldTimePatterns  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, ease can be difficult to understand, especially when it changes from one pattern to the next. Are they making a pattern for a garment that fits tight, or loose? That's why I just go by the measurements on the pattern package. If they say size 18 fits a 44 inch bust, and you need 48 inch bust, then go up two sizes. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!

    I would add that once you get above size 12, they jump in 1/2” increments as a rule. Always check, by measuring the paper pattern, once enlarged, the circumstances you will end up with and then add ‘ease’ for movement. I also, might make up a prototype out of scrap fabric. Just front and back to try on.

      Old Time Patterns thank you for sharing your wisdom with us all! I accidentally bought a baby pattern and forgot my daughter is much larger than her age. This helped me be able to upgrade the 24month (largest size) to a 3T. I did 1/2” instead of a 1/4” (two sizes up) and followed exactly how you did curves depending on the gaps. You’re a genius and this was the easiest way for me to learn. Again, thank you so so so much. 💗💗💗

      Not all patterns have darts. But when darts are included, they would be moved up or down the same distance as the shoulder is moved.

    I have a pattern from 1968 one size 14, I cut the pattern out leaving almost an inch extra, I sewed a mock-up and discovered a problem, the armhole was too small. So, I guess I should have increased the armhole. This is difficult when it is only one size.

    • @OldTimePatterns
      @OldTimePatterns  3 роки тому +1

      Without seeing exactly what you did, it is very hard to see where it might have gone wrong. But if you added 1 inch to the ENTIRE pattern, no, that would not work. The increase should only appear on the side, and also extend the shoulder up. Then smaller increases around the front and back of the armhole, but not the bottom of the armhole. Hope this makes sense. Thanks so much for watching!

    Thank you for showing this video. Can you use pieces from one pattern to another pattern?

    • @OldTimePatterns
      @OldTimePatterns  2 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't recommend mixing pieces together from different patterns, because that has the potential of creating a huge amount of fitting problems. For example, two bodices from two different patterns don't necessarily have the same length of side seam, or the same sleeve opening, since they were both designed to accomplish a different look. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!

    • @katejones9046

      It totally depends on the pattern and which pieces. As long as the seam lines match in length, it is doable. This works best if you are just changing style lines. (Neckline, type of sleeve, adding or removing a placket.) It's easy to get confused so I wouldn't recommend for beginner sewers.

    That's very informative but the thing that is missing is how to reposition the markings for darts and other sewing points, as these things will shift about when the pattern is altered

    Hello!
    Thankyou for your video.
    I actually need to do the opposite of this. I bought some size 14-22 pattern by accident and was wondering if I could resize them downwards to get to size 6-8...? Would the same rules apply? Do you know whether the pattern length between sizes (ie 1/4 inch on the side seams etc) is consistently the same throughout all the sizes? Or does it change drastically from the larger sizes to the smaller ones?

    • @OldTimePatterns
      @OldTimePatterns  4 роки тому +2

      I'm so glad the video was helpful to you! Yes, the same rules apply for sizing down. But going that many sizes down, you probably will need to shorten the pattern up some, and it would be best to take your back measurements to find out how much, and take the difference out just slightly above the waistline (there is usually a mark on the pattern for waistline). Hope this helps! Thanks so much!

    • @OldTimePatterns
      @OldTimePatterns  8 місяців тому

      Going small is just the opposite of what I show in this video. You would be drawing your new lines towards the inside, instead of the outside. Resizing for petite is a bit more complicated. I haven't done a video for that yet.

    That’s exactly the way I’ve been doing things. I’m 22 as well but I’ve never take such a small pattern size to size 22. Do you have to move any bust darts etc when you add so much to the sides? Also, recently I’ve seen people slash down the middle of the pattern to add width to the body and also sleeves, it made me second guess the method I’d been using. Does it matter.?

    • @OldTimePatterns
      @OldTimePatterns  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, bust darts would be moved in the same increments. Slashing down the middle doesn't give a very accurate re-size. Slashing in thirds would be much more accurate, and I hope to do a video about that soon. I hope the video was helpful to you. Thanks so much for watching!

      Sleeveless bodices have smaller armholes than bodices with sleeves. Find a pattern for the same fabric (knit vs woven), copy the correct armhole onto tracing paper, and redraw onto the pattern you are revising. Then add the sleeve that goes to the second pattern which matches that armhole. Make sure you use a knit pattern when working with knits.
