    Way back in 1979, when this pattern was fresh and new, I fell in love with and purchased it. I made the dress out of a matt yellow rose-printed satin, and it was stunning. The heavier-bodied fabric makes all the difference in how the dress turns out, especially in the skirt volume. Now that you have the pattern sized for you, it may be worth giving it another go.

    Dimity is too lightweight for the volume of skirt panels. But don't give up on the pattern. You did a fantastic job and it is very flattering on you. Make it again with a slightly heavier fabric and then you can swish to your hearts content. Hope you had a lovely birthday

      The part I don't get is why we are dyeing fabric when there's already black fabric out there, with or without the flowers. One of my favorite dresses in this period, quite possibly from the Gunne Sax line or something similar, used the sweetest black fabric with a dainty floral print and I literally wore that thing out.

    I actually made this dress in 1981 (actually made 3) for bridesmaid dresses for my brother’s wedding. They turned out pretty well. I had a very small bust and waist back in those days, before 4 children. I still have the pattern!

    Lmao that you also used music that Rachel often uses.
    It was worth your trouble to trim the collar. It needed it aesthetically.

    I remember making that dress in 1980 while in high school. It's a great pattern. I made the full length version using pale blue and white gingham check with white details. I remember fitting it to a padded strapless bra, hahaha, because at 15 I was flat as a pancake. I wore a gored taffeta half slip with it, like a flared petticoat without the ruffles.

    I love how the dress came out - especially as a sewer with similar issues in sizing/sewing errors, etc - it really spoke to my personal experiences. I think this dress would be so nice if used with a sheer black under-dress - perhaps in a voile, with long poofy sleeves and skirt, worn beneath the lights - which are genius, by the way. It would be even more "witchy" and romantic.

Loved that one. The other was a full-length ivory lace-covered confection that I wore to my prom. I have no idea what happened to them, but I hope they are well-loved wherever they are. Great dresses!

You made me laugh more today than I have all week, I'm glad I'm not the only one who sometimes shoves stuff in the Bad Clothing Corner to contemplate what it's done while I go do something else so I have something to show for a day's work, fitting is so dang difficult! It took me a lot of photos and a Zoom meeting with a friend who knows about fitting but I now have a princess seamed bodice block, I am unstoppable! Except that's not how things seem to be going.
      I love the Bad Clothing Corner, so Bad Projects can go and think about what they've done while I do something more satisfying to recover. I'll get back to them, but first I need to regain a Good Self Image and have some tea.

      @tejaswoman 11 місяців тому +1

      P.S. Your bold claim is completely wrong with respect to me. I have never heard of this human being, nor have I ever seen her before. Bear in mind, I only started watching _you_ maybe, what, a week or so ago? And that's after a few months of watching SewRena on top of years of watching Crow's Eye. I don't even sew, apart from a course I took one summer ca. 1983 at my sewist mother's insistence, in which I completed a pincushion she still has and a knit top I liked but have long since outgrown, in addition to starting a skirt I never finished. I clicked on this bid solely because of what I just said above regarding my immense and abiding love of this dress from personal experience.

    • @tejaswoman
      @tejaswoman 11 місяців тому

      Watching the finished result now. Congrats on eventually finding the path to sizing it up properly; my mother quit making me clothes when I reach the point red just physically departed too much from the pattern, because by her own admission she's terrible at alterations!
      I hope someday you will treat yourself to a version of this dress in an attractive fabric.* (By which I do not necessarily mean a fabric in the Gunne Sax/Laura Ashley vein if that aspect is not your thing.) Grasped that the point of this particular project across the various makers was to give it a spooky twist, but such mixed feelings seeing the beautiful pattern made up in such a drab fabric. I'm genuinely curious what the dyeing of the fabric was for - I would go check out the links before writing this comment, except that I'm concerned with my ADHD I might not remember to come back for months - was it a requirement of the project so that it fit with the ones other people were doing, or did you hate the dimity and figure you might as well dye it black rather than go buy actual black fabric? In the videos I've seen so far, all the parts that involved hard work made some sense: trying to stick to what that particular vintage a pattern might have called for, or working hard at saving a rare pattern that had been nibbled on or left in mold-inducing conditions, or examining in minutest detail every difference between a vintage pattern and its modern reproduction, or the time you made up the reproduction pattern simply because so many fans kept begging you to do that. This time I just couldn't fathom why you were going to all that trouble to dye the fabric a color that you could go out and buy. It doesn't seem like it could be that the fabric itself is vintage, because if that was the point, then I would have thought dyeing it cancelled that out anyway. I know I sound like I'm griping just to gripe, but I honestly feel like I'm missing something here.
      * ETA: oh, well never mind the suggestion of making it up again in a different fabric sometime, now that I see you didn't actually like the style of the 👗 . Though I hear you about the trim and how it added time, it really did save the dress in terms of the dyed fabric still having some redeeming accompaniment.

    I know this is rather old at this point but and I have no idea how I came across it but as soon as I saw the pattern I knew I had to reach out. This is the same dress pattern that my mom used to make my Junior Prom dress in 1980! We even made it in pink like the pattern envelope show. I bet she even still has the pattern around her house somewhere. Hilarious to find it in use now

    You did a beautiful job with the dress. The front of the bodice in particular fits you so well, and the skirt style is beautiful! I hope you try making it again with a different weight of fabric as it’s so pretty. The lights were super cute too. A lovely birthday dress! Enjoy your week off!

      Thank you so much! I think the pieces themselves are keepers, just not together (Rachel has the right idea).

    Fabulous. I had that pattern and made the dress in the late 80’s. I had kept the dress and my daughter discovered it in my favourite items chest and claimed it mid 2000’s. I had to take it in for her. I think it is/was a classic item.

    How cool, this pattern was my 1979 and 1980 prom dress (two different guys at different schools so I saved money!). Your dress came out very fun with the lights. Your size-up was impressive. Wish I'd saved the pattern of the one I did as a teenager for my sister. It went from 14 to 2x and was the type Gunne Sax with the horseshoe collar, at least that's what we called that style back then. It had the faux lace up bodice, lace sleeves and wide fitted cuffs. Miles of ribbon and tiny trim stitched on...she was gorgeous in it and then right away went on a massive diet and it never got worn again. haha

    I loved the black dye of the fabric. I was one of those plus size girls in the 80's and loved gunnesax. My grandmother sized it up for me. You were lovely in this gown.

    I think it's really cute. I sure would love to get a sized up version of this like yours. I would have NO IDEA how to size it up! and the largest one I can find ( for about $60!! Ouch) is a ten. I am a high bust 47, full bust 54, waist 49. I think I need to learn how to d the sizing up thing. I got the FBA thing down a while ago after everything I made fell right off my shoulders.
