    OMG! I have not been able to wear this dress since i bought it 2 years ago because of weight gain. After watching your tutorial, I tried your method and was successful! I wish I could share my pic of the almost finished dress. I’m wearing it tomorrow for my Sunday meeting on zoom. Thank you for being a great teacher!

    I am not understanding how you are attaching it. Is it just adding the square fabric or did you make a triangle at the top? Ok you have to add to arm part also right?You are so lucky you matched the colors so well, even black are so many colors of black.

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  3 роки тому

      Hi - I hope this makes it clearer, please let me know: 1) you cut the garment all the way down the side seams, the body side seam and the arm side seam in one cut. (You can actually do this on anything - dress, shirt, jacket, coat, anything - as I show at the end of the video - I did this in a thicker fleece fabric on my favourite coat, as well :))

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  3 роки тому

      2) You cut a long strip of fabric, generally a bit wider than you need, so you can alter the width finally when you try on at the end, as the final step. This length of fabric that you are putting into the garment should be long enough to cover the whole body side seam as well as the arm side seam, all in one. (If the rectangle is not long enough, you will have to join 2 strips to make them long enough for the whole seam.)

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  3 роки тому

      3) You sew in this strip to the side seam, right up along the arm seam (which you cut open earlier), so you have 2 long seams with the strip in between, where the original body and arm side seams were. Does this make sense so far? :)

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  3 роки тому

      4) That will widen out your garment fully. You then try on, and if you need to make any adjustments - slim down, or taper at the waist, for instance - then you can do so by adjusting the strip that you have sewn in.

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  3 роки тому +1

      I so hope this helps. Please let me know if this has clarified how to do it. The essence of this is that it is a really simple method. I love your videos, which are wonderful for people who haven’t the confidence to just cut up the seams of a nice (if too small) dress without guidance! I’m currently sewing a panel from an old legging leg (your tip, obviously!) in the front of a men's long-sleeved tee from a charity shop, and the inspiration is mostly yours. So this isn’t criticism, at all! I’m a longtime knitter and recently come back to sewing, very inexperienced and - hopefully you’ll know what I mean by this - my brain doesn’t work very well in sewing. Part of it is that it's so hard not to be wasteful, even in the process of fixing a garment so it’s wearable. Not having a big fabric stash, this beautiful repair would need me to buy a metre - more? - of rayon/viscose fabric, which is very unsustainable fibre, and then a lot of that gets thrown away. Well, some could be kept for other repairs, but still, not enough to fix another shirt or dress. I was watching this video the first time during our hard lockdown, so not even charity shops were open, and now Brexit/pandemic has done for one of the only local fabric shops that sold deadstock fabric. Some of the problems are kind of specific (live in Ireland, newish to sewing, and won’t use Amazon 🤗), but I’m sure you have inspiration to spare for sourcing planet-friendly fabric when old leggings won’t quite do it? Thank you!
    (Knitting - so easy in comparison! Just unravel and your yarn is as good as new! Or pick up stitches and add a panel that way.)

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  2 роки тому +1

      Hi - thank you so much for your lovely comment and feedback. Of course, you are absolutely correct about my guidance effectively meaning that you have to buy in more fabric to complete the alteration - in which case, you're just plugging back into the supply chain again ! I get it ! I didn't advocate this in this video, but, to me, the first solution from this would be to use other old unwanted garments of 'matching' or complimentary fabric to complete the panels. Of course, that still leaves waste as you cut out the panels. I'm experimenting at the moment with a project around using waste materials to create stuffing for other projects - easy to make furniture, cushions, pet furniture. So, yes, I absolutely take your point. Another way to get second hand clothes that you can use to repurpose is actually eBay. You can focus on buying a large garment (dress/ gown) in the colour / pattern that you want and then repurposing that, and saving the waste for stuffing. It's definitely something I'm thinking about and want to address - so thank you so much for raising the question. There are many wonderful Facebook groups as well that focus on fabric and materials repurposing and the things that people do are absolutely astounding, inventive, magnificent !!! Gotta love the human mind !!! Inspiration is to be shared - it's all good. The 'end game' is this, IMO: as we move away from fossil fuels and search for and create safe plant based, renewable alternatives for our petrochemical derived based fabric production (acrylic, all things stretchy etc), there needs to be an audit of the fabric and clothes manufacturing big business chain (e.g. Here in the UK), and legislation effected regarding dyes used, water contamination and product (landfill) wastage. The high street stores need to stand up and be counted in taking part in this. For my part, this is certainly something I wish to investigate. For the moment, my advice lies on a continuum of imperfection, one that I always wish to address !! I'm hoping that, for the moment, even though my guidance, in the broader picture, is imperfect, alteration is still an improved and socially inclusive step on from the practice of 'constant purchase'. There is work to done, and there is always a way. Thank you again for your feedback and I look forward to producing work on how to repurpose fabric waste !!! Go well, enjoy, and Glam It Up For Mother Earth !!! 🌎💚💚💚 Nicola 🙏

      @@GroundswellEcosystems Thank you, Nicola! Your responses are always so thoughtful and positive! I’m sorry, because you absolutely didn’t advocate going out and buying loads of new fabric, and I didn’t make clear that I knew that. I just assumed that you would have a fabulous stash of leftovers and the like, so you could ‘shop your stash’, as they say. 💕 Also being in London it’s got to be a lot easier to get deadstock and remnant fabrics, which is equally good. (I just got some gorgeous remnants from MeterMeter in Denmark - can’t wait to play with them and more old sweatshirts. I’ll be using this video and your tee shirt to sweatshirt one, so thank you again!)
      eBay it is! Also occurred to me that your inspiration opens up the possibility of using Depop, which skews much younger and smaller sizes than eBay, but does seem to do better with finding local sellers. Very much looking forward to your stuffing series. 🤗 By the way, have you ever seen DinLife's channel here? Not so much ‘glamming it up’ , but all hand-stitching, and she uses even the tiniest scraps of fibre and fabric. @@GroundswellEcosystems Oh, the jumper supersizing will be fun 🥰. I’m sure it will take a lot of time to source deadstock fabric sellers, which is frustrating as it should be the kind of information easily available to anyone who wants it. You can’t do it ALL by yourself! I know of The New Craft House, which seems amazing. I guess I was kind of thinking that there'd be the equivalent of Colourmart (love love love it - curse Brexit!) for fabrics - but maybe it’s harder because too many companies are producing too many clothes from cheap fabrics, overseas from their sales, and are just incinerating leftovers.
      Oh, here are two links I saved a while ago - probably all info you know already but just in case something might be useful: wendyward.wordpress.com/2017/12/27/where-to-buy-sustainable-fabrics/ and www.halfmoonatelier.com/pages/ethical-fabric . The second only has a few UK sources and I think they might all be in the first list anyway, but she’s making a list for people who do not live where she does! (The Dutch Caribbean.) Hi. I have a body con dress with a side zip & it's too small. I want to take out the side zip, stitch up the SS closed, and then create a seam at the back to insert a corset. Do you know how to create a seam on a garment from scratch?

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  Рік тому +1

      Hi - that's perfectly possible to do. You will need to take out the side zip as you plan and sew up that seam, as you have planned. At the back, my understanding is that you will include a similarly stretchy fabric in a back panel as a corset. You will need to cut the length of the fabric at the back where you plan to place the corset. To make sure this new seam is at the CENTRE of the back, fold the dress flat, lining up the side seams to meet, so that you are sure your new seam is right in the centre of the back. Cut through. Now you can insert your corset. Please be aware that you will need to check the stretchiness of the fabric you're sewing with and find the stretch fabric setting on your sewing machine so the seam doesn't wrinkle as you sew. Does that make sense ? If it doesn't, please get back to me - I'm always working on making explanations clear - thanks. Go well - Nicola 🙏💚

    Hi thank you for the reply. Currently I am getting very frustrated after several attempts to 're insert a 4cm piece of material into the side seam I took off the bottom of a dress. I have tried 4 x to insert it as you described but can't seem to get to lay right . The waist bit aligns up ok but the hem part is 2" out h e l p !

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  3 роки тому +2

      Hi - Thank you so much for your question ! Bless you - these things can be like puzzles ! I'm trying to decipher this, so please forgive me if I misunderstand ! :)
      1) My understanding is that you are saying that the strip you are inserting fits the front (or back) of the garment, but doesn't fit the back (or front) length on the other side? What happens is that fabric has got different 'grain' so it might be pulling out, and the fronts and backs of the dress might also be slightly different lengths when unpicked.
      2) Suggestion 1: Re-align the panel from the hem end, so it's straight across at the front and back, and pin up the sides like that till you taper them in after the waist, and under the armpit. If the fabric is soft and can move around a bit, you should be fine when you wear it as any 'diagonal pull' should ease out when worn. You can check this by trying on when pinned, before you sew.
      3) Suggestion 2: Pin in again as you were doing, and when you get to the hem end, where the front and back aren't aligning when you've pinned in the panel, then adjust the dress length accordingly so the back and front are equal by cutting some off on the front or back bottom edge. The best way to do this is by laying out the dress flat on the floor or a big table. This assumes you have spare fabric to play with in the length of the dress. I always curve the back of the dress (or skirt) length a bit longer than the front as, (cough cough), I'm dealing with some 'booty-fabric-pull-up' around Casa Kench (lol ouch), so having the back curved slightly longer makes them equal, when standing.
      I really hope this helps ! Thank you again for your question ! I'm fascinated by the challenge of trying to describe this clearly. Let me know how you go ! Send a photo if you like to nicolakench@groundswellecosystems.com and I'll feature what you've done on later videos, if you want - Nicola :) #shinethegreenlight #everyactioncounts #thereisalwyasaway

    Grest video ! can you show us how to alter( make bigger) a garment without adding the arm piece just the side pieces ?

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  3 роки тому +2

      Hi - that's a good question, and one I will make a video on at some point for sure ! Thank you for the request 🙏
      In the meantime, this is the advice:
      1) leave the sleeve seams intact (just unpick up past the armpit area into the sleeve seam so you have access to where the seams all join)
      2) open up the seams all the way down the side of the dress / garment. - put in the panel and sew up as far as you can go to the armpit (you won't be able to go all the way because of the closed sleeve seam)
      3) lay the dress (/garment) on its side and pin a planned seam from where the sleeve seam is still closed to where the panel is folded in half. This will be at an angle, and will cut out some of the material at the top of the panel. Sew the seam, cut and edge, as usual.
      4) in this way, you're building in a side panel that tapers up into the arm sleeve.
      Does this make sense ?
      Please tell me if it doesn't, as I'm really working on my written instructions, as I teach design and am creating patterns all the time (my other channel - Original Tech Nic - Nicola Kench Design, showcases my design work and teaches people how to knit #FINDYOURINNERLEONARDO ! #TheJoyOfKnitting 💚💚💚🙏 -

    Why didn’t you use a tapered gusset to start with ?

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  Рік тому

      Good question - because it's more complicated to predict that for beginners. I created this video to give everyone - particularly those less experienced - a place to start in adjusting their beloved clothing ! The point of this method is that you can start really really simply - with a straight piece of fabric on either side and THEN taper this price as the final step, as a final adjustment. I've found this has worked really well for me in keeping things not only simple - but also adjustable, as a final refinement. Thank you for watching and for your feedback - I've struggled with this question - pre-tapered or not !!!! - well and hard before, and I've found this method to be the easiest for all - and still absolutely effective. Thank you, Nicola 🙏💚💚💚 #biggreenlove 💚💚💚

    Can you do a video on enlarging just the bust on a garment that fits otherwise? I am working now on an empire style dress/top that has a waist that should go just below the bust but since it is too small on the bust the waist is just above my bust. I am thinking about adding a panel between the bust and the waist.

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  2 роки тому

      Hi - I have a line up of Project Alteration videos on their way, so something to deal with your request isn't imminent - so sorry 💚 However, the way to deal with this is to unpick the arm side seams right through the under arms up to to the empire line waist, and fit in the widening panels from the sleeves to the high waist. As the additional fabric will be too wide for the actual waist you can add in a 'dart' seam just above the waist line in the panel fabric that tapers the panel to the width of the waist. If you haven't widened the arm sleeves right to the wrist, the same type of 'dart' seam will apply just before the wrist cuff. Does that make sense ? Please let me know if I should explain more ! Thank you ! Let me know how you go - Best wishes, Nicola 🙏💚

    I enjoyed watching your informative video.
    My granddaughter has bought a corset prom dress & as time progresses it has become too small. I believe with this video I can now enlarge it. There is one concern though, the bust is too small & the top tends to fold over on her. Putting straps on may remedy this but do you have any suggestions to enlarge the bust area. The side panels may adjust the front fit but she has become a busty girl.
    Thank you for the video.

      Hi there - thank you for your lovely comment. Firstly, what you have planned regarding adding in panels to the sides and putting on straps, if needed, seems like a sensible way forward. However, as you say, if, when you've done this, the bust is still not large enough - this is my suggestion:

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  2 роки тому

      Please bear in mind, however, that making sewing alterations on a corset will be highly visible if the fabric is light (cream, white etc.) but will be less visible if the fabric is dark or black. Unpick the lower half of the bust cup and insert a sickle moon shaped piece of fabric into this lower half. This will enlarge the bust cup. As this will be tricky to sew, the best way to start is to insert this panel by hand, and then strengthen the sewing by machine sewing.

    • @GroundswellEcosystems
      @GroundswellEcosystems  2 роки тому

      That should give you more bust size. Please let me know if that's clear, and how you go ! I'm sure what you do will be fabulous and your granddaughter will be very happy ! You sound like a wonderful grandmother ! All the best - Nicola :)
