  • I am trying to make a vintage dress with one of Trashy Diva's most hard to find prints, Liquor Labels. In Part One, I show you how I make a mock up using a vintage dress pattern from the 1950's, Simplicity number 3932.

Until now I thought I was the only one who had a sewing room which looked like the aftermath of a tornado. I feel like I no longer need to keep the heaps of fabric and sewing mess a secret. After all, it's what comes out of the sewing room which matters and your garments are fantastic Stephanie.

Nice call. The Jim Crow museum can appreciate it for what it is; I made a wool coat and managed to work around the US ARMY stamp on the original blanket. now a 9th century viking overcoat, fur lined and perfect. You managed to recycle twice! I went to college in Birmingham, Alabama, and found quite a few.....old artifacts...that belong in that museum. They are valid vintage.....from a period of time that we do NOT care, as a group, to revisit. however, I do appreciate their historical significance. As much as part of me wanted to BURN THEM when I heard of the Jim Crow museum project. It is fitting that they be displayed in such a place. Oddly enough, when I mentioned this to my black fellow students, they thought that they SHOULD continue to be displayed.....just to remind us. Valid as well, though I'd rather have them in a museum than on the street. NO white only signs should still be up in this century, as well as "Irish go home". We don't DO THAT now. But we DO need to remember SOMEONE thought it was a good idea. And keep those "someones" at bay.

I'm just now seeing your videos for the first time and the fact that you cared enough to avoid using the racially insensitive logos AND donated them to the Jim Crow museum made me an instant fan. I don't know an armscye from an ease, but I will binge every last one of these, just because of what you did. (And hopefully, I'll actually know the difference by the time I'm done 😂)

Pocket under-stitching! What a concept! Apparently that is a crucial step in sewing pockets that don't look like flowers painted by Georgia O'Keefe. Doing it by hand, after completing the skirt, is a terrible idea. You know, just in case anyone thought they might like to try it.

I like that wry sense of humor. Used to love sewing... the pieces I sewed on upside down, wrong direction or forgot to add basting stitch, cut too close, shirred backwards half way thru, or run out of bobbin thread. My best endeavor was a lovely fitted sundress, white w/small blue flowers and a ribbon belt in medium sapphire. It was great, except... no boob room to spare, even with younger me being a AAA, Wore it a lot anyway; at least it supported the meager floppy bits.

When you are easing the back to the front (or any seam that needs easing), put the longest garment piece on the bottom next to the feed dogs and let the machine do the work. That way you will not need all those pins which takes up quite a bit of time.

I loved that you couldn't find the instructions, I'm always miss placing something while sewing and it's usually right in front of me! I used to cut on the floor, then used the plastic tables with the fold down legs. My husband made stands for the legs so that it was a better height for cutting. Now I use the kitchen island my husband and I made from an old kitchen hutch. It's the perfect height and my cutting mat is the same size. Thank you for being socially conscious of your fabric choices and figuring out a way to still use the vintage table cloth. I really hope it works out. I can hardly wait to see the finished dress.

Yes paying attention when you're young is a challenge. 😅
My grandma taught me to sew at 12. I even took sewing for my High school elective subject. But i found all the stay stitching, basting and nitty gritties too boring when i was younger. I made clothes skipping all the boring parts (except when i made my wedding dress 😇 )
Now that im in my late 40"s I find all that old tailor techniques fascinating - im now re-learning sewing using the proper techniques i see on you tube creators like you.

Patterns , I struggle so with understanding, the Seam ripper and I spend too much time together, but I love that I am trying to realize w/o a personal instructor I am only going to improve at a turtles pace bc there is alot to learn the hard way...lol

I know Im a bit late to the party but when I gather i use a pintuck foot and the small crochet thread and zigzag over it. I add a straight stitch only after I have pulled them up to fit the next seam to help with stability when I put the 2 seams together. I was never able to master not breaking both of my threads. Apparently I have no patience and I'm too rough on the stitching. Lol

My mother tried desperately to teach me to sew, but I had no interest. Later in life, particularly because of being a member of a viking/rennaisance group, and learned to hand sew without patterns. (we work from pieces of remaining grave finds, as well as art from the period. More like...decide you want the garment, then figure OUT what you need to do to make it.) Now I'm known for my sewing. Wish I had paid more attention as a child.

I know this is an old comment, but how did you keep from cutting up the pattern itself? I've tried cutting my fabric out with pnking sjears but I just end up with zibzag edges to my patterns which makes the it hard in case I ever want to use the pattern again. And how do you lne up the two fabric edges to make sure you have the correct seam allowance amount? If both edges are zigzaggy won't that make it harder to see the "true" edge? So many questions 😅😅

The floor is a large, stable area where the fabric will stay put when spread out. Taking your shoes/slippers off means you can crawl over the fabric to easily reach/cut all over without moving it.
Not so good for those of us with old knees though. At 60 years old, I still find it preferable with larger pieces than killing my back with my slightly too low for the job dining table.
