That readability test is an amazing tool! I have never heard of that! It’s so helpful! I thought I was writing for a first grader to read my book, but I realized it will be read to young children and they will read it on their own around second or third grade! Very cool, Eevi! And your age range quiz was very helpful as well! God bless you!

After listening to your video, I stopped writing my stories for everyone. That is why I have been stumped on certain sentences. Everything you said was so helpful. I appreciate your videos.

Thank you so much! I'm not a children's story writer, but I just had a fable land on me, and so as a neophyte in this area this video - and your WONDERFUL Age Range Quiz! - are precisely what I needed. But both have assured me I'm in a quandary. Per your quiz, my story falls into the lesson / mortality, "to be read by adults to kids" category, with full page illustrations. It's told in the first person from the POV of the child. My problem is that the ending then turns to the story-mother's POV, in an epilogue that gives the story its rather funny and (hopefully) heartwarming ending. Based on your Quiz's results I read the similar books, and Love You Forever is the tone and even type of ending. But that book is told in omniscient narration and so easily transitions to the son's POV. My question then is: Is it possible to (1) have an epilogue to a children's book in this category, and (2) have it switch POV. (The idea, really, is that the epilogue would be for the adult reader to turn the page and find, and be touched by the preceding POV of a child.)
I truly apologize if this is an inappropriate comment / question to drop here. But your videos and advice are a cut above the rest and I just thought I might ask. Thanks a million for every second of your time!

Hi Ninsuhn! Thanks so much for sharing this with me! It's absolutely okay to add an epilogue! As to your POV question, hopefully my video on just that will be helpful. I went ahead and copied it for you below. Happy, happy new year, Ninsuhn!

Having worked with Children for a number of years, I have always known that age group is important when writing my books. I am likely to write Middle-Grade books as my main focus. My first book was a lower middle-grade novel with the age group being 8---11. My second book, now being written will be the same.

Once again, your video is so helpful, Eevi! Thank you for making and sharing all your videos and resources.
After almost 3 years of hard work, we are almost ready to publish our 8.5"x11" heavily illustrated chapter book of about 5500 words (divided into 14 chapters plus some nonfiction pages in an appendix.)
However, we are struggling to select an appropriate age level. Originally, our target age range was going to be 7-10, but the readability site showed us that the reading level is higher than we planned. Since the story takes place in Africa, there are some unfamiliar words, but we have added an asterisk after each of those words and a short definition at the bottom of those pages. We have also edited a bit to simplify the vocabulary a bit more.
Since this book has original watercolor illustrations on just about every page, it is also a book a young child would like to have an adult read to them. My question concerns the "set" age levels. Do we have to use an age 6-9 category, or could we have 7-11 or even 6-11? I realize that would be a large range, but some pre-readers (6-7ish) would enjoy the illustrations and storyline, and older children (8-11) would enjoy reading the short chapters independently!? We have researched this for a long time, but we are still confused and would really appreciate your advice about the best age range to select!

Congratulations on your upcoming book! You must be getting so excited! When we're entering the age during the setup, we will do so using two separate fields (lowest & highest), so you get to enter a range. To determine what age might enjoy your children's book the most, you could do two additional things: (1) look and see what's already out there. That is, find books similar to yours and see what age group they have listed (make sure you focus on those with a high review rating). And (2) have your book read (or being read) to a number of different age groups. As authors (AND grownups), we often assume that certain age groups are perfect for our book. But we only know for sure if we let these age groups actually read it. I so hope this helps! Have such a wonderful launch!

Hi Dennis! If we're looking for books for specific age ranges, we can simply enter this as a search phrase into Amazon's search bar (e.g. "children's books for 3 year olds"), and Amazon will provide us with great examples. I so hope this helps!
