Hi Shelly! I’m a retired elementary school librarian and reading specialist. I love your videos on children’s books! Like me, I can see your passion for children’s literature!
Awe! Thank you!!! I really love doing these videos. They are a true labor of love and I’m so glad someone enjoys them!
Do u have a channel?
Your a natural. The illustrators and authors are so lucky to have your kind support and free promotion. ♥️🎨🖌️
I loved this. Also, you'll never know what this video gave me! My 14yo son came and sat with me while I was watching this. He ended up leaning into me, and we cuddled while watching this and talking about our favorite children's books. I rarely get these moments with him anymore.
Im glad I own one of these! Children of the forest By Elsa Beskow
Thanks for sharing this, Beatrix Potter was one of my all time favourites too, along with Richard Scarry, as well as the Ladybird books which I loved as a kid! I'm currently in the process of writing and illustrating my first children's book, something I've always wanted to do since I was a child who loved these books myself! :)
Wonderful!
Two of my favorites are Tuesday written and illustrated by David Wiesner and Bamboozled written and illustrated by David Legge.
I love your “picture book” videos. I also appreciate your review vocabulary. You’ve helped me look at these books in such a new way.
I used to own hundreds of picture books, but I retired from teaching and kept only a few (hundred). 🥰
I looked up Bamboozled and was very beautiful!
Van Allsburg ♥️ I agree the I love the pencil & charcoal more than the colored illustration by him.
Potter♥️ Gorey♥️ Sendak♥️ Little Bear Books are some of our favorites!
Beskow♥️♥️♥️ she was my oldest daughter’s second favorite illustrator! She’s magical.
Wood’s Napping House & The Little Mouse,The Red Ripe Strawberry, & The Big Hungry Bear are still favorites to this day ♥️
Great list!!
I’ll have to check out The Red Ripe Strawberry - it’s a new title to me, I think. ☺️
@@Shellyish it’s the whole thing The Little Mouse The red Ripe Strawberry & The Big Hungry Bear!
Thank you for putting this list together! 💕 I need to check out many of these still.
Enjoy! It was my pleasure!
Thanks for these recommendations and flip through Shelly. I will be checking out some of these authors you mentioned 🤗
Thank you so much, Kelly Ann! ☺️☺️
I’m poorly with Covid for the 4th time and was feeling pretty low- then I discovered you!!! I’ve absolutely loved this and as you talked, I went on eBay and Vinted and purchased 5 of the books you recommended! Thank you so much xxx
How kind! Enjoy the books!!!!!!!
I watched another one and managed to get a copy of Farmhouse and Bedtime for Bo! I am so excited xxx thank you so much Shelley from the UK X
Scuttle the Stowaway Mouse!!! Gorgeous illustrations.
These are beautiful books. The Tale of Benjamin Bunny is such a wonderful book! We love children's stories, we have read so many over the years! Great video, Rachel & Caleb ☺
It really is!
You are adorable. Fun video. I love childrens books. Your haircut is so cute.
Oh thanks!
Another great video, thank Shelly. Doing my homework on children books, and your videos are really helping. Checking out all the great picture books of past few years while waiting for my illustrator to be available to draw my picture book.
You are so welcome.
Such lovely books, Flotsam looks wonderful, the colours reminds me a bit of Stephen Biesty's works a little. Recently, I've been obsessed with the works of Anne and Janet Grahame Johnstone, especially their works for Greek Mythology! I tried to find a copy, but sadly, they are incredibly rare and have yet to even see a battered copy on ebay! If you happen to find some copies, please shared them in your future video! :)
Oh thank you!
one of my favorite books is The Day jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash Illustrated by Steven Kellogg written by Trinka Hakes
Noble
As a retired Elementary School Teacher, I truly enjoyed this video (new subscriber). Some of my favorites
Hi Barbara!! Welcome!!
This is my first video of yours that I have seen. It was nice to see some old classics and some one's i wasn't familiar with today.
Welcome aboard!
excellent share, please keep up the good work
Thank you, I will
@@Shellyish Specially this one was liked by my 8 year old daughter who is learning to know the books. Such video helps instill book reading to the new minds.
It's weird UA-cam suggested this video but I'm glad I watched it. I have all of those books. Recently I bought a large selection of children's books (100's) with the intent to cut them up to use in junk journals. This gives me pause.
Thank you for this list. Some books here are new to me, with lovely illustrations. May I recommend my own favourite, The Mousehole Cat, written by Antonia Barber and illustrated by Nicola Bayley, a moving story as well as great illustrations. Nicola Bayley also illustrated Katje the Windmill Cat by Gretchen Woelfle, which is also nice, and has lots of side-illustrations in the style of Delft blue tiles.
Great suggestion!
I recommend Mossy by Jan Brett
Hi Shelly, I am about to become an author of a children's book early next year, we have just begun the illustrations!🎉🎉🎉 I wanted to say that yoir videos have been inspiring, informational, genuine and honest. Thank you for taking time to make them!
Gökhan Çukurova
Thank you!!
Just wanted to say congratulations, that's huge! Wishing you all the best!
So happy that you have discovered Elsa Beskow, a true Swedish classic!
She’s amazing.
Lovely books,
Thank you!
My fav illustrators are garth Williams Maurice sendeck
Favorite children's books, because of the art and the stories.
Stellaluna, and The Arrival (anything by Shawn Tan really)
Shawn Tan is brilliant!
Leo Lioni, when I taught preschool my kids always clamored for Swimmy.
I have to suggest a few! Any books by Dean Morrissey-the color, the details! Once There Was a Tree, beautiful & detailed illustrations by Gennedy Spirin, The Cow That Wouldn't Come Down by Paul Johnson-soft colors, whimsy, expressive, Leave Me Alone! by Vera Brosgol-colorful, funny, detailed. Heh, it's so easy to go on and on.
Great suggestions!
I loved The Little Bear stories when I was a child.
So precious!
My personal favorite is Kinuko Y. Craft. It feels like you've been dropped into the most glorious fairy tale.
I looked at Craft’s work and it’s gorgeous.
I’m with you, love her illustrations and have tried to collect them , but still searching 🌟🐾🌟🕊️
@T-M123 get books by Patricia McKillip and you've got Crafts illustrations!
@@pamelatarajcak5634 thank you for the suggestion!🐾☔️🐾happy holidays
Very well done Shelly, I think you would really enjoy a visit to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts. What setup do you use to shoot the overhead video of page turns?
Thank you, Michael! I’ll love to visit the Eric Carle Museum. I really need to do an art road trip. The Marriage Portrait of Lucrezia, Duchess of Ferrera is in Raleigh, NC. Two places I’d love to see.
I use a tripod that can be manipulated to a 90 degree angle. Why do you ask?
@@Shellyish Oh, I forget, I think you use a real camera to film rather than an iPhone like so many others. It’s so clean and clear with no shaking from above, just nice and seamless.
@@bookofdust yes, I use an Canon camera which I’ve owned for ages and ages. Thank you. ☺️
Check out “Teddy Overboard” by Steven Teichner - it’s a MUST read!
I remember Sendak said in an interview that he was haunted by having seen a photo of Lindbergh’s baby’s corpse in the newspaper when he was a kid. That memory was an inspiration for Outside Over There-he said something along the lines of kids needing an outlet to talk about scary things.
That’s a haunting story. He created something beautiful with it.
I like tomie dePaola as an illustrator, strega nona is one of my childhood books.
Highly recommend Shaun Tan! I think you'd like his work
I love Shaun Tan!
I just found your channel! I loved this video!! HI!!!!🐝
Welcome!!
I loved the style of the first illustrator, Van Allsburg. Myself I love the French illustrator Rebecca Dautremer. She has a very unique and beautiful style. Do you know her?
I do not, but I just ordered a book from Rebecca Dautremer from my local library.
@@Shellyish wonderful ! Can’t wait to hear what you think about her.
Take a look at mossy the turtle, stunning illustrations by Jane Brett
How come you didn't mention "The Little Prince" ? It's my top fav one.
Edward Gorey!❤❤❤
Love him!
Check out Daniela Drescher, her illustrations of fairies are very dreamy
Since watching you Shelley, I’ve bought about 20 books online! I can’t afford to watch you!!!😂
I then decided to draw my own book for my granddaughter- would you like to see it? X
I’d love to see it! ☺️☺️
How can I send it please?
Do you have an email please? I’d love you to se what you inspired me to do whilst poorly with Covid x
@@janiceshore455 yes! My email is Rachelle.e.swearingen(at)gmail.com
@@Shellyish ooo thank you x I’ll send it now x
Would you do a video on Crocket Johnson.

I saw a tag today on the @bibliosophie channel and I thought “Hey. Shelly might like to do this tag, since she appreciates the artwork of books.” It is the Judging Books By Their Covers Tag.
Show your books that have the…
1. Best color combination on the cover
2. Best typography on the cover
3. Best simple cover
4. Best end pages
5. Best map
6. Best naked hardcover (no dust jacket)
7. Best back cover
8. Best chapter headers
9. Best spine
10. Best drawings
The tag is and old one that has just recently been revived, so please pardon my assumption that you have not encountered it.
I love this suggestion! Thank you for thinking of me, Jon!!
Hey! Have you checked out Robert Ingpen’s illustrations?
I just did! THANK YOU!
absolutely joyous video!! love hearin you talk about your hobbies n passions😇🫶🏽
Thank you so much!!
What do you guys feel about Dr.Seuss illustrations I never read any or at least don't remember reading any as a child but now when I look at them they creep me out so much. If it creeps out 20 year old me I can only imagine the horror it would have caused if i had read it when I was a todler. I also found things like dragon ball-z and harry potter scary but as an adult I loved Harry Potter. (I still find dr. seuss' the cat in the hat scary as hell!) I also always had a dread about death as a child. Anyone here who relates to any of this? Your thoughts will be much appreciated!
Suess isn't my favorite illustrator - certainly!
Animalia just blew my mind... Have you heard about Poonam Mistry and her "how the stars came to be". That book started my collection, I'm absolutely obsessed with it :)
I just put two Poonam Mistry books on hold! Thank you for sharing! :)
I think you should add Rackham to your list….no one is better than
I’ll add him to my list. ☺️
Anything by the illustrator Genaddy Spirin should be included.
I just added Genaddy Spirin as someone to look into! :)
Good, You won't be disappointed,@@Shellyish
Charles van Sandwyk
Is Beatrix Potter the writer of the book about the Kent who almost gets turned into a roly-poly pudding???
I'm not sure.
I’m a new author and illustrator
Z is for Zillam who drank too much gin. Some of those illustrations are a little macabre.
A little?! Quite a bit, I think.
am i the only one who feels a little bit ill at ease with these "gloomy" moods ? except E Beskow of course
Maybe it’s just my taste. ☺️☺️
Oh yes. I didn’t know what you meant until the 11:00 minute.
check this book plz "The adventure of Oliver and Clara: Family above all"
I looked it up! Very cute! :)
You look like Michael Bluth's one true love! sorry
Thanks?
@@Shellyish Haha you should definitely check out arrested development
