I wish you would list the books in the description box below. I keep wanting to read the books recommended by you and I have to go through each video to try to find it! 😭
Wowww...I just discovered Emily in the last year and I wanted to make this exact comment. Sad to see this comment from 6 years ago and nothing has changed 6 years after.
GIRLLLLL..... I've been a follower of your beauty channel for YEARS and I'm just now finding your book channel?!? The only thing I love more than make up is books! WHY YOU SO PERFECT DOE?
I was really surprised to hear that you didn't speak English in highschool! Your English is pretty much flawless. I'm from Ontario, and my French isn't half as good!
her English vocab is amazing 😍 but I did notice the accent immediately so I came to the comment section to see where she's from, guess this answers my question 😊
YES YES YES Assassin's Apprentice! The Farseer Trilogy is my favourite Robin Hobb trilogy (book 2 of it being my favourite, but the first is also amazing). You'll love it! I've got loads on my tbr for 2017 - currently reading Six of Crows but after that I'ma take inspiration from you and try to read some shorter books - not many of those in the fantasy genre so it'll be good to mix it up!
ACOTOR is a fantastic series! With the first book, you'll either love or hate it but the majority of everyone loves the second book. I hope you enjoy the series! I'm going to try to read Jane Austen books this year!
Personally, Northanger Abbey used to be one of my least favorite Jane Austen novels until I took a class on 18th century literature. Pretty much Northanger Abbey is a parody of gothic novels, which were really popular in Jane Austen's day. Gothic novels were all dramatic and mysterious and included many tropes like large castles, monsters, murders, dark hallways, candles blown out by sudden gusts of wind. My lit professor summed it up as picture 17th century Scooby Doo only instead of Mystery Inc the protagonists are heroic men and beautiful women (Bella/Isabella was a very common name for the female protagonist, Austen even makes that the protagonist's name in NA). So pretty much if you really want to enjoy Northanger Abbey I recommend first do a bit of google searching on Gothic novels (just like read a wiki page) because then it is easier to see how it's parodying the genre and it's a lot more fun, in my opinion. I also really liked Persuasion. Can't go wrong with either one. Happy reading!
A while ago I read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which I found very compelling. It is about how Lacks' cervical cancer cells were harvested, reproduced, and studied in order to get to the body of scientific knowledge that we have today. The writer tells her story, but also her descendants' stories as well, and how the groundbreaking research affected them (or didn't).
Fahrenheit 451 is one of my favorite books of all time. I am planning on getting a tattoo inspired by this incredible book and my favorite quote from it. It's astounding. Happy reading! 😊❤
Omg! I just discovered that you are a french canadian like I am! I always wanted to start my own booktube channel but since french is my first language I've always been scared of starting one! But seeing you really makes me want to start one!
Hey Emily. Are you planning to put the books you speak about in the description bar? I love watching your videos all the way through but sometimes like to go back and reference which books you spoke of!
YAY The Queen of the Tearling!! I hope you like it!! There are so many books in your video that I love. I'm so excited to see what you think of all of them!
I've just started rereading Assassin's Apprentice and it's as magnificent as during the first readthrough of the book... I couldn't recommend it more. I also just finished Illuminae and it was a really unusual and great read. You've got all the best books on this TBR videos!
Just discovered your channel and was enjoying browsing through it and then I was excited to see you're from Quebec! So am I. Looking forward to checking out all of your book related videos!
Love that you're getting started with Robin Hobb's books - I'm sure you'll enjoy them. I had some real issues getting into The Three-Body Problem and ended up DNFing it; so it'll be interesting to see what you think of it. My vote would go to Northanger Abbey, because I love reading Gothic lit at this time of the year. Great list - hope they all match up to your expectations!
I LOVE LOVE the Robin Hobb series! Hope you enjoy. The Nightingale was a great book-very sad. Also, looking forward the the last book in the Shades of Magic trilogy!
I've read both Northanger Abbey and Persuasion and I enjoyed Persuasion the most! Northanger Abbey was awesome as well, but I'd start with Persuasion! Have fun!
I love your videos! Every time you show a book I pause the video, go to Amazon and see there how many stars it has, I read the top reviews and end up adding it to my Books wish list 😊
Really great selection of books! We seem to like a lot of the same kinds of books. Hope you like Fahrenheit 451, it is one of my favourites. Some good science related non-fiction is Paul Ekman's books (especially Emotions Revealed).
I'm a huge fan of Jane Austen's novels and of them all, my favourite is persuasion! I'm always surprised by it being one of the least known Austen novels but it is a hidden gem.... Look forward to you reading them and hearing your perspective.
I just read All the Light We Cannot See in December and I thought it was fantastic! It took me forever to pick it up because it was huge and historical fiction (which I really enjoy, but it can still be really dense). Once I finally started reading, though, I couldn't stop. I listened to the 16 hour audiobook straight through and when I finished, I was tempted to just start it over because I enjoyed it so much. I hope you like it!
Read persuasion first!!! It's really different from her other books. I'm hoping to do Northanger abbey in Oct with my book club as it's supposed to be about haunted houses!
Out of the Brandon Sandersons you mentioned my favourite is The Emperor's Soul (it was a truly beautiful story) and my least favourite is Warbreaker. Elantris is a solid book but still not on the level of mistborn which is understandable since it was his debut novel. As for the Farseer Trilogy, when I finished it I ended up hating it but it's stuck with me this whole time and I've realized I didn't hate the books I just hated what happened to characters that I loved. The more I think about it the more I appreciate this series because it made me feel such strong emotions. Just be prepared for an emotional roller coaster!
I think you should read Persuasion from the Jane Austen classics. It is such a fantastic story and I think a lot of people can relate to Anne as a character. Honestly I think you will really love it!
Yes Illuminae is awesome ! I was a bit hesitant to pick it up because it was so hyped up but I absolutely loved it ! Same for Six Of Crows you should totally read it if you haven't, these two ended up being my favourite books of 2016 ! And I've practically finished reading All The Light We Cannot See, pretty good but historical fiction is not my favourite genre haha I really want to read Fahrenheit 451 too !
I really want to get to A Court of Thorns and Roses this year. I am currently reading The Throne of Glass series and I'm absolutely loving it! Jane Eyre is also on my list for this year :)
a court of thorns and roses is REALLY good but the second book in the series is just amazing, I'm going to try and reread the series before the new book comes out in May
For nonfiction: Anything by Bill Bryson, he's hilarious, intelligent, and very thorough. He can make anything interesting. If you're into science, I recommend A Short History of Nearly Everything, or, my favourite, At Home: A History of Private Life. Also, one of the best nonfiction books I've ever read is Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright.
A great nonfiction book to read is Endurance: Shackleton' incredible voyage. It is about a 1914 South Pole expedition that gets trapped in an ice sheet and the months long struggle of how the 27 member crew got themselves to safety. It is truly epic and well written. Some editions of the book come with amazing photos that they managed to save.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is great! I just finished reading it. It's solidly written with an intriguing cast of characters. My fave character is Dr. Chef.
kind of off topic but I was curious soo.. I noticed that you organize your books by colours; so if two books in a trilogy have different colours do you put them together on the shelf or do you split them to mantain the chromatic order?
They're split - my favorite series are on the right bookshelf (the top right shelves) where they can stay together though! For now that's what works for me :)
Wohoo! We're going to be reading a lot of the same books. I doesn't have to do with this video in particular but I wanted to say that the thing I love the most about your videos is that you don't only say "I want to read this book" but give a short explanation on what is about and what you think will like about it.. This really helps viewers because we don't have to Google the books later and we can tell if we're interested in them just from your videos! One thing I'd like to request is that please please write the names of the books you mention in the description bar. Often I find myself interrupting the video in the middle to go add the book you mention to my 'to-read' list.. Thanks!
In on the 3rd book in the robin hobb series and I just love them! they have some slow points for sure, but it all adds to the building of the main character so much! at one point I actually yelled into the book like he could hear me or something, hahaha. you get so engrossed in this character since you are literally growing up with him.
I read Persuasion for the 19th century British Women Writers class last semester as the first required reading for the class. It was a fairly easy reading experience but I would have preferred to start with Pride and Prejudice for an introduction to Jane Austen. Still enjoyed reading it :)
If you like science based non fiction I would suggest The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. It was very interesting and Rebecca Skloot did a great job interweaving the story telling of Henrietta and her family's life and the science behind the HeLa cells.
You will enjoy The Nightingale very much it is a great book. It is definitely in my top 5 books and I would totally read it again. I hope you enjoy reading the book like I did.
I will be interested to see you opinions on these books as the year progresses! A historical fiction series that I so highly recommend is The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly, such an amazing series that I wish I could read over again for the first time. A non-fiction book I raff that year that I really enjoyed was The Devil In The White City by Erik Larsen, it's about the Chicago world's Fair and a very devious man using the fair for his own pursuits, I guess you could say it's historical non-fiction haha
Anthony Rapp's memoir Without You was amazing, I loved it. It's about his experience with his past boyfriends and his journey in the theatre world and his experience playing Mark in Rent (hence the title). It was really great. Another one I wanna read is Kristen Chenoweth's memoir about being in Wicked, and Anna Kendrick's new memoir.
I had the same problem with Historical fiction (interested in just don't pick them up). So, I started this year with reading All the Light We Cannot See, and I really like it does far!
Elantris, the girl with all the gifts and Fahrenheit 451 are some of my all time favorites. I like the "Thorne of glass" series much more than the "Court of thorns and roses" series, it just comes across more complex as well as more mature and better developed. p.s.- All the light we cannot see is great.
I'm not sure if you've gotten to the Jane Austen books yet, but my second favorite (maybe my favorite!) Austen book is Persuasion. Northanger Abbey was actually okay to me, just not up to the standards of the rest of her novels. The only Austen book I didn't really like was Mansfield Park.
Northanger Abbey is sort of gothic and I haven't read Persuasion. If you want classic ghost stories then Henry James' the Turn of the Screw is quite good. For classics I'm hoping to read Dante's Inferno this year, I read Milton's Paradise Lost a few years ago, and I really enjoyed it, but it might be more difficult for someone whose first language is not English. Historical Fiction: World War 2 books are really interesting. Night by Elie Wiesel is a Holocaust memoir and is beautifully written, and the Book Thief is wonderful and really interesting because it is written from the point of view of Death.
Hey Emily Fo. My name is Julie. Great choices of books for 2017. I did want to tell you, that I have read/listened to the Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, and I wanted to warn you that one of the aspects of her writing that tended to throw me off, was the fact that she only includes the thoughts and inner feelings of only 1 character. Which means you will have no idea what is going on in the minds of any other characters. I am used to hearing about each characters perspective, but with her, I just got one. I thought that it was odd. I am going to finish reading/listening to the Harry Potter series, the Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galexy series by Douglas Adams, all of the series by Rick Riordan, The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, and I need to get the Brandon Sanderson boiks finished too. Let's not forget the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs. I also have about six different biographies that I want to read. I also have some massage textbooks to look into too.
As a person who read both All the Light We Cannot See and The Nightingale, I recommend you read those at different ends of the year. Anthony Doerr is a fantastic author, and you should 100% read All the Light first. Its prose is more taxing, but much more poetic and beautiful, and I think if you read The Nightingale first, you may not want to get through Doerr's anytime soon. Both are great, though!
For the Jane Austen books, I haven't finished Persuasion yet, but I reccommend Northanger Abbey. I feel it is a lighter book than Persuasion. Also, for non-fiction l am reading The physics of the Impossible by Michio Kaku. Super recommended.
ACOTAR!! I really loved this book, Hope you'll enjoy it as much I did. Since you've mentioned Historical Fiction genre, why don't you try to read Salt to the Sea? It's a really great story.
The Tearling trilogy is absolutely fantastic! Enjoy reading it. I also really enjoyed All the Light We Cannot See. I predict you will read and re-read Jane Eyre many times :)
The ACOTAR series is how I've started out my 2017 reading. I finished the first book already and am about a quarter of the way through the second book.
Persuasion is better love story than Northanger Abbey but Northanger Abbey is wittier. I am currently reading Court of Thorns and Roses as my reading goal and it is good.
We have basically the same tbr for the year haha Jane eyre is a book people either love or despise and I'm definitely on the despise team, so good look :P
I really enjoyed Persuasion a lot; coming from both movie adaption and the actual book! Also not sure how you feel about Stephen King, but Salem's Lot was honestly one of the best books I've ever read. Fantasy/Thriller genre!
It's one of the book that was in the community mail box... the package was apparently stolen by a neighbour and now I don't have any of the books I ordered :( I got my money back but I need to reorder eventually!
My Lady Jane is great. I recommend Persuasion. 😘 I just love Jane Eyre. It was my first book in English, but I already knew almost by heart, since I read it since I'm a 12. 😍 And I really started reading in English with 18.
So far books I want to read this year are: Crooked Kingdom, A darker shade of magic (and A Gathering of Shadows and possibly the third one), The final Empire (and maybe more of the Mistborn Trilogy), Shadow and Bone, The Winners Curse (apparently I'm going to start a lot of trilogy's lol), I'll give you the Sun, The Night Circus, The Girl with the lower back tattoo by Amy Schumer, Still Alice, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and like a million more books but I'm such a slow reader so we'll see!! Oh and I also plan to get Wonder Woman by Leigh Bardugo as soon as it's released!!! I'm interested in that new DC Icon series by YA Authors. I also want Catwoman from Sarah J. Maas but that doesn't come out till next year I think...
Hi Emily! The covers are gorgeous! I'd buy all these books by their covers hahaha In my country some of theses books weren't released yet so...I'll have to wait =( Love your channel ! ♡
I see someone has already recommended it, but I second their suggestions! "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson succeeds in making science and history hilarious. His other books on travel and adventure are stunning. Thanks again for the suggestions :)
Christiane F. is a really good non-fiction. It's a german book, I don't know if it has been translated in English or French but I think it must have been because it's pretty popular! I really recommend it. ( I read it in Dutch, hence I do not know of an English translation)
I find The Girl With All the Gifts really confusing, maybe because of the sciency phrases they used in it. I don't know if it's just me though or if some other people also had the same problem and also stopped reading like I did.
The queen of the tearling is not a book for adult/mature teens, you'll see that deapite the plot seeming quite common (hidden queen gets to her throne), the execution is not. And Kelsea is such an interesting charater! Jane Eyre is one of my all time favourite books, o me is perfect. Also Persuasion is on of my all time favourite classic book.
Oh non fic rec: The Demon in the Freezer and The Hot Zone, Preston is an amazing author. He take scientific concepts and makes them entertaining as well as informative. Also, Fast Food Nation.
I'm the worst at reading historical/ historical fiction books...fantasy books are just so tempting! :P I can't wait for A Conjuring of Light either and am currently reading Mistborn. :)
Megan Beauregard same!!!!
her English vocab is amazing 😍 but I did notice the accent immediately so I came to the comment section to see where she's from, guess this answers my question 😊

Awesome list!! So many of those I want to read as well! I'm reading "everything, everything" right now and absolutely love it!
Linda Dilbeck, I have that book on my TBR!

Robin Hobb is one of my favorite authors. Hopefully you enjoy her books, I'm rereading them now.
Definitely Elantris first as well
YAY The Queen of the Tearling!! I hope you like it!! There are so many books in your video that I love. I'm so excited to see what you think of all of them!
I need more time to read everything haha
Everyone needs that haha

Just had a major order, and I also purchased All the Light We Cannot See and the Nightingale :)
All these book choices look amazing! Good luck on your goal of 100 books!
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is great! I just finished reading it. It's solidly written with an intriguing cast of characters. My fave character is Dr. Chef.
Persuasion, by Jane Austen. I am also planning to read this year All the light we cannot see and the Knightingale!

I've got the American version of Queen of the Tearling, my mum bought the wrong one...Still happy that she got it for me!
I love how you mixed Mistborn Vinn and Shades of Magic Leila haha I do that sometimes too when I get to invested in great series and characters
I know haha I feel like the two of them are very similar :P
A Court of Thorns and Roses series is amazing. Especially the second book A Court of Mist and Fury is the best thing ever.
I've read All The Light We Cannot See.. It's a beautiful book, the jewel makes the story come together

Elantris, the girl with all the gifts and Fahrenheit 451 are some of my all time favorites.

I really want to read ACOTAR as well! Everyone seems to love it! :)
I recommend Persuasion over Northanger Abbey but I really liked both! Persuasion is more "mature."
Could you do a video on your top 10 favorite books of ALL time ❤️ (just to give me some ideas on what books to ask for Christmas) 🎁
The ACOTAR series is how I've started out my 2017 reading. I finished the first book already and am about a quarter of the way through the second book.
OMG The Queen of the Tearling's cover is BEAUTIFUL.
I'm here after watching some of your most recent videos and it's funny how one of your favorites books is in your TBR here 😂
i'm reading northenger abbey right now! enjoying it so far 😊
I just read A Court Of Thorns and Roses and I loved it so much! You should definitely read it.
I haven't read the other Jane Austen book, but Persuasion was really good!
I really enjoyed Persuasion a lot; coming from both movie adaption and the actual book! Also not sure how you feel about Stephen King, but Salem's Lot was honestly one of the best books I've ever read. Fantasy/Thriller genre!
It's one of the book that was in the community mail box... the package was apparently stolen by a neighbour and now I don't have any of the books I ordered :(
I got my money back but I need to reorder eventually!
I am reading the Queen of the Tearling and am really enjoying it.
we had to read fahrenheit 451 in 10th grade and it's one of the only mandatory school books i enjoyed reading
Can't wait to try and read it again!
LifewithEmilyFox it's a good book i think you're gonna enjoy it! also, can you do the makeup book tag?
My Lady Jane is great.
I recommend Persuasion. 😘
I just love Jane Eyre. It was my first book in English, but I already knew almost by heart, since I read it since I'm a 12. 😍 And I really started reading in English with 18.
All the Light We Cannot See is really good!
I have not read Northinger Abby yet. But I did read Persuasion last year and really enjoyed it. U can read That.. M sure u will enjoy it
So far books I want to read this year are: Crooked Kingdom, A darker shade of magic (and A Gathering of Shadows and possibly the third one), The final Empire (and maybe more of the Mistborn Trilogy), Shadow and Bone, The Winners Curse (apparently I'm going to start a lot of trilogy's lol), I'll give you the Sun, The Night Circus, The Girl with the lower back tattoo by Amy Schumer, Still Alice, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and like a million more books but I'm such a slow reader so we'll see!! Oh and I also plan to get Wonder Woman by Leigh Bardugo as soon as it's released!!! I'm interested in that new DC Icon series by YA Authors. I also want Catwoman from Sarah J. Maas but that doesn't come out till next year I think...
Starting lots of series is always fun... finishing them is way harder :P
Read Elantris first. Then either read Warbreaker or the Way of Kings
You should try Big Magic (Elizabeth Gilbert) its kinda about creativity and its really cool
Hi Emily! The covers are gorgeous! I'd buy all these books by their covers hahaha In my country some of theses books weren't released yet so...I'll have to wait =(
Love your channel ! ♡
Jane Eyre is an awesome read! Hope you love it too!
I see someone has already recommended it, but I second their suggestions! "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson succeeds in making science and history hilarious. His other books on travel and adventure are stunning. Thanks again for the suggestions :)
I'm not sure what categories these fall under but I'd like to read When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and Being Mortal by Atul Gawande
Probably Non Fiction :)
The Nightingale is my favorite book! I hope you enjoy it!
I hope so :)
You made me want to read again! Thank you Emily!
Oh non fic rec: The Demon in the Freezer and The Hot Zone, Preston is an amazing author. He take scientific concepts and makes them entertaining as well as informative. Also, Fast Food Nation.
Fast Food Nation was great! Along the same lines, I really liked Salt Sugar Fat by Michael Moss.
Thanks, I just added that to my list!
I'm the worst at reading historical/ historical fiction books...fantasy books are just so tempting! :P I can't wait for A Conjuring of Light either and am currently reading Mistborn. :)
Thank God!Now I can marathon with you the queen of the tearling series :D
Both!!!! But if you must choose, Persuasion 😊
I about to buy Court of throne roses because beauty and the beast is my favorite fairytale
Do it! I'm reading the first book, and it's amazing 🌹😱
I'm really intrigued to learn french, you really made me want to start doing so😅😅 so what do you think i should do to start my learning process?
Use Duolingo! That helped me at least with the basic stuff!
