So excited to hear what you think of the classics! My favorites are: -Wuthering Heights -Jane Eyre -Of Mice and Men -The Picture of Dorian Grey -Dracula -Lord of the Flies (this was really sad to me) -To Kill a Mockingbird -A Town Like Alice -Crime and Punishment - I LOVE the Hobbit too...just keep in mind that Tolkien describes everything for a long time...gets a bit tedious. I skipped over a lot of the songs ;)
I think you got an edited copy of Karamazov, because it's like 800 pages, and it's glorious. Nice copy of the Hobbit there. And Samwise Gamgee is damn sure the hero of LOTR. Haven't read the Foundation series yet, but I want to read it. Can't recommend Lord of the Flies enough
Rebecca, East of Eden, and Anna Karenina are some of my favorite books!! The writing in all of them is so good! I have War & Peace but haven't read it yet.
Tess is my absolute favourite book! I'd recommend trying Anne Bronte's books (Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall), Sons & Lovers by D.H. Lawrence, and The Master & Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov.
I love that you want to read more classics this year! I can't wait to see what you think of them! Some of them I've read myself and most of the rest are on my TBR. Loved this video!
Gorgeous covers on the Jane Austen books. I bought the Barnes and Noble paperbacks a few years ago to read but I wouldn't mind collecting this new set.
Wow those covers of Jane Austen books are stunning! I love classics. Lord of the Flies is great. So is Kurt Vonnegut (Slaughterhouse-5 is amazing). If you haven't read Catcher in the Rye or The Great Gastby you should add those to your classics collection. Also The Handmaid's Tale!
Persuasion is definitely one of my favorites - it's way up on the list with Pride & Prejudice for me! All of Jane Austen's novels are amazing though, so you can't go wrong no matter which you choose :)
I have never seen the Bollywood version! I really need to! But I love Darcy and Jane in the Hollywood version. Darcy walking through the mist at the end gets me every time!!!
Thomas Hardy is your man for depressing stories. I'm a bit of a sucker for tragic stories so I went through a period where I read the majority of his books. I can't say it's for everyone unless you love depressing, tragic stories like me. There are elements of Jane Eyre and Rebecca that are pretty similar. But they're both good in their own ways too. BBC miniseries all the way. It completely captures the original story. Overall, I would say Persuasion is the most mature of Austen's stories. It's my personal favorite. And finally, I will always prefer Dostoyevsky to Tolstoy.
Jane Eyre is one of my favourites but I think you'll absolutely love Wuthering Heights! it's very gothic and dark and I think it will be right up your street!
I have been a fan of your beauty channel for years and now I love your new book channel! It helped me get my new beauty/ book channel going :) Also, I love those Jane Austin covers, they are sooo pretty!
War and Peace is amazing and watching the TV programme beforehand will definitely help you out with the huge range of characters :). ps love your videos!!!
I’m currently reading “Pride and Prejudice” and I’m loving it so far. I’ve also read “Rebecca” a long time ago and I remember that I liked it. But the book you must really read and I think you’ll love it is “East of Eden” !!! It is a really good story I loved it so much.
I started The Karamazov Brothers 5 years ago and I am only halfway through, though I liked where it was going. One of my New Year's resolution is to end it ASAP!!! However, my edition is a lot longer than yours, over 1000 pages?? Jane Austen is genius! The only one of her books I haven't finished yet is S&S (also in my TBR this year). I loved every one (MP not so much, but it was good.) And about Mrs Dalloway by Woolf... I read this for a book club, and I liked it more once we had the chance to discuss it. The Lord of the Flies made me uncomfortable (I was in my early teens when I read it) I still haven't read many of the other books you mentioned! Have fun!
Jane Eyre is fantastic! I've read it twice. It's not as much of a romance as a the story of a determined girl/woman (the book begins with her as a child) who fights to live life on her own terms. It's actually a pretty fast read. I hope you love it!
tess of the d'urbervilles is absolutely heartbreaking. prepare yourself! would also 10/10 recommend the miniseries with gemma arterton and eddie redmayne after reading it if your emotions can handle another round 👍
I love both adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, I guess I prefer the 2005 movie since its the first one I watched and "fell in love with" and it has amazing music and photography but I definitely love the 1995 tv series because is more fateful to the book but its about 5 hours long so I don't watch it as often as the movie... And I actually enjoy the Bollywood movie as well, modern comic adaptation I find it cute, the 1980 tv series and Lizzie Bennet Diaries are ok and my least favorite was the 1940 movie... I went through I phase with P&P a few years ago. I'm also trying to read more classics this year so I'm currently reading North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell and enjoying it so far. Happy reading! :)
I've been trying to collect editions of Peter Pan and that edition is so pretty!! Jane Eyre is also a really good read I'd say it has romance elements in it but it's mostly about Jane Eyre finding herself, it used to be my favourite "classic" before I read I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith (which I also recommend)
this is a very nice selection of books you've got there. I read War and Peace probably four times now. Every single time I discover something totally new about it. I don't think you have a full "Brothers Karamazov" book. I think you only got book one, the book itself is much much bigger.
Once you're done reading Jane Eyre check out Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys its a retelling of one of the characters and it will make you look at Mr.Rochester in a completely different light. I love how it creates a new narrative to counter the underlying racism in Jane Eyre! Also as an Indian Bride and Prejudice is embarrassing and hilarious.
lol I wondered what Indians thought of it! I think it's hilarious...the guy who is supposed to be Mr. Collins (I forget his name in the movie). He kills me!! lol!!
The Lord of the Flies is my all-time favorite stand alone book. A lot of people don't like it but there is so much symbolism and it is so fascinating. Rebecca is also very, very good.
I loved Rebecca! It was a great thriller/detective story and Ive given my book to read to my family and friend and every single one of them loved it! So i think you'll enjoy it as well. As for Tolstoy, I am Russian and Tolstoy was a must read in high school (no one would be able to have patience and comprehend it at a younger age). I have to warn you that his descriptions of everything (trees, clothes, shoes etc etc) tend to stretch on for tens of pages and if you're into it, you'll like it, if not, you can skip those pages without sacrificing the story at all. If you want to read more Russian classics, you should definitely read The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov. It is an amazing sort of fantasy book that involves the devil, people's weaknesses etc etc. You will enjoy that one, i guarantee it.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my absolute favorite novels! I didn't know there was a Bollywood production though, so I will have to check that out! I would agree that Darcy and Elizabeth in the BBC Miniseries are my favorites. 😆😍Loved this classics haul!
My favourite of the Brontë sisters' novels is "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall." It's easier to read than the other sisters' novels. "Northanger Abbey" is also great! I've read it three times. "The Hobbit" is another one of my all time favourites! I hope you like them :)
My favorite classic is Wuthering Heights. Another one where people either love or hate the characters but how they act is the point, in my opinion. i, of course, recommend it.
LOTR is really really good! all time favorite! Love the part where they try to find hope from despair. also Wuthering Heights is great. The love story actually is pretty relatable for me. Hope you enjoy them!
I was surprised to see The Awakening by Kate Chopin in your haul -- I was going to recommend that you read it! I absolutely loved the audiobook narrated by Kim Basigner. It's not shocking so much as it is heartbreaking. Edna Pontellier is a great character. I recommend Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. It is a harrowing tale of racism in the US in the 50s, but it is such an important read. Highly recommend.
some of my favorite books are classics. i loved Anna Karenina but you MUST read (if you haven't yet) The Count of Monte Cristo. it's a bit of a lengthy read but it's seriously so good. The Picture of Dorian Gray is an honorable mention. it was such a struggle to read Pride & Prejudice. i could never get into the style of Jane Austen's writing.
Least fav version of p&p is the one with Keira knightly. East of Eden is one of my favourite books ever. I enjoyed lord of the flies in high school but mostly because of all the analysis we did
If you love P&P, there are some really great adaptations out there, especially the Lizzie Bennet Diaries here on UA-cam! It's amazing, and they did a really good job of modernizing the story. The same people also adapted Emma in a series called Emma Approved!
If you like dystopian/post apocalyptic books you should read the Under the Never Sky series. I started after reading the hunger games series and the Divergent series. It is a YA series and has some romance but I think you can still enjoy the book because it is not mushy or cringy and the female character is not weak and does not need saving.
I really hope you enjoy Tess Of The D'urbervilles, personally it left me a sobbing mess after I finished it. As for Lord of The Flies, I did read it for school and honestly I don't have anything positive to say about it haha, hope you enjoy it nevertheless. Happy reading!!
I thing I would recommend for any Pride and Prejudice fan is to see the British mini series called "Lost in Austen" It's very interesting about a modern London girl by some magic finding herself switching places with Elizabeth and going into the PP world.
I am curious what's the opinion on Tess because I found it boring before anything. The Brothers Karamazov seems short but that is only volume 1. You miss vol. 2 :)
Rebecca is one of my favorites. Another classic that is my all-time favorite and one that you definitely need to read (if you haven't already) is To Kill a Mockingbird.
I would also recommend books by Charles dickens, my favourite being Christmas carols, and the book the great Gatsby and also adventures of huckleberry Finn by mark twain. Have fun reading!
In my younger days I read many Classics Illustrated comic books...and in many cases they led me to read the actual novels. These include the 3 Musketeers, Prisoner of Zenda, The Count of Monte Cristo, Rip Van Winkle, The Man in the Iron Mask, Moby Dick, David Copperfield, Huckleberry Finn and House of the Seven Gables.
For Jane Austen, I really liked reading Emma and Northanger Abbey is a fun read but it's really different to her normal writing style because it's more a «parody» of the Gothic genre than a love story! And you also made me think to put Anna Karenina in my TBR! (Et sans être trop personnelle, originaire du Québec? L'accent que tu as lorsque tu parles français ressemble beaucoup au mien aha ;) )
I'm so curious now if you were able to figure out the culprit in "And then there were none". So looking forward to this month's wrap-up. Please do mention your train of thought!
Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favourite book (the other one is Gone with the Wind) but since You already read that, I would highly recommend Emma :D
I really like Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. It had such a stigma in high school (particularly my ultra conservative school), that I couldn't resist reading it myself to find out what all the fuss was over. What I got from it was that it was basically a typical teenage boy trying to find his way, both wishing for a guiding figure to help him and not knowing how to embrace one when they were right there, ready to help. And by the way, I had read 1984 by Orwell and I didn't think it was any more controversial than that.
I loved the movie The Hours! The plot focuses on three women of different generations whose lives are interconnected by the novel Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. Nicole Kidman plays Virginia Woolf and won Best Actress for it. The film's score (soundtrack) is beautiful too. :)
I've been reading Ursula K. Le Guin's work. She's a sci-fi/fantasy writer and she touches upon very interesting themes. I'm interested to see what you'd say about her work! I'm currently reading Left Hand of Darkness, which is the one that my friends recommend, and Wizard of Earthsea.
I love Mansfield Park too! I feel like it's a bit underrated compared to the rest of the Jane Austen books which is a shame cause it's such a good book :)
Ive been thinking about picking up Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre so definitely give an update when you finish it! Theres a Jane Eyre movie on Netflix that I just watched and loooooved it ^-^
the Awakening by Chopin may be short but it packs a powerful punch! I loved it when I read it. I would also suggest withering heights it's absolutely amazing :)
I found Tess Of The D'Urebevilles so hard to read! The writing was really tough to get through, and like you said, it was very depressing! But I absolutely love Agatha Christie, I never see the ending coming :)
When doing imaginary casting from books, I always try to do the Muppets version. And while Kermit as Mr. Darcy, and Miss Piggy as Elizabeth, it’s a bit harder to nail the more minor characters. For example, is Grover the right choice for Mr. Bingley?
I loved Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. I read both books each in one day - I just lived them, the story, the characters and simply couldn't put them down. I really loved the Hobbit as well. It is really different from the movies. They tried to make the movies suitable more for adults than for children. Whilst the book is definitely a children's story.
This video is so cool! I like that you try incorporate more classic books in your TBR! But for me they are so intimidating:( Actually I'm from Russia and we read Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky in high school and these books in my opinion is so difficult to understand for 16yo. And since then I'm afraid to start any classic at all and I'm 24 now. So that said I've want to ask if you'd like to film a video like "Books that I'm afraid to read" and show us some of books that you can't pick up because one or another reason. And also books that you was afraid to read, but read anyway and absolutely loved it! Also I want to recommend to you one of the most famous russian classic books that almost everybody loves. It's "Master and Margarita" by M.Bulgakov, magical realism, 20th century Moscow and stuff:)) And my fave book of all times (but unfortunatley not russian:) is Johnatan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach - short but so good! Sorry about my broken english) it's obviously isn't my first language:) Have a nice day!
I love Russian classics, and War and Peace is definitely my favorite! :) I also like Crime and Punishment, and Dead Souls (not sure if the author is Russian or not). I'm not such a fan of Anna Karenina, but hopefully you will enjoy reading it. :)
To Kill A Mockingbird is my favourite book so I definitely recommend that one. Jane Eyre is one of my favourites as well... I read it multiple times as a kid and I try to re-read it every couple years. There's a really great old movie version, too. Peter Pan is definitely NOTHING like the Disney movie... so, prepare yourself for a dark and twisted story, haha.
east of eden by john steinbeck is amazing!! i love jane eyre & oliver twist. You might like Emile Zola in the original french - he has a whole series following a parisian family. :) try elisabeth gaskell novels too - like north and south
I'm not a fan of Jane Austin's books but I love that BBC show of Pride and Perjuice with Colin Firth. Also don't give up with Charles Dickens, try with Great expextations or David Copperfield. These are wonderful novels
Oh I hope you love Cat's Cradle. Vonnegut's humor is fantastic. He's very easy to read as well. If you don't like it, though, do NOT skip out on slaughterhouse 5. There's a reason that book is incredibly highly regarded, it's seriously a masterpiece If you're looking for a classic sci-fi, I LOVED the time machine by HG Wells. The language is a bit dense but it's less than 100 pages and really fascinating. The first real popular presence of time travel. Or, (i think it's si-fi) Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is another lovely one. I LOVED the awakening!!! Oh. And Emily Bronte only wrote one book (which I hated tbh but if you like gothic you might like it) but the actual star of the Brontes is Ann. If you ever get a chance, pick up the tenant of wildfell hall. It SHOCKED victorian england
omg ive actually never read pride and prejudice (it is on my tbr though) but my mom showed me bridget jones' diary recently and i got on a colin firth kick so i watched pride and prejudice with him in it. gotta say i love him.
i'm curious to see what you think about The Road, the first time I read i didn't care for it, the second time i absolutely loved it. it can seem a bit of a "why is nothing happening" thing but turns out to be a pretty solid read. i love mccarthy and southern literature in general (i recommend flannery oconnor, walker percy, toni morrison and of civil right movement richard wright) and i think mccarthy has better books, this one was just hyped up by oprah lol.
I LOVE the Bollywood version. The songs are so fun! I think I like Matthew Macfayden as Darcy because I saw that version first and it holds a special place in my heart, but I do agree with you that Kira Knightly (while 100% awesome) was almost too sassy... Honestly, I love all the versions though, and I occasionally do marathon them.
Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice are my all time favourite classics. You should totally read them like right now!! I'm sure you'll enjoy these 😊
I expected to hate East of Eden when I read it because I really didn't like the end of The Grapes of Wrath, but I flipping love east of Eden and went nuts about it on Facebook when I was reading it and my friends were all "I'm not surprised." Hopefully you will love it--the characters are really great. And I've never seen War and Peace but the recent tv adaptation took a LOT of liberties from what I've read. And make yourself a little family tree when you start reading it and use as a bookmark. I found that really helpful keeping all and -oviches and Peters straight.
Love Pride and Prejudice, and I love all three adaptations you mentioned. Yes the equivalent of Mr. Collins and Lydia in Bride and Prejudice are hilarious. Persuasion is my other favorite Austen novel, I absolutely adore it. The Hobbit is an easier read, although overall I do like Lord of the Rings more. The Hobbit is fantastic too. I'm hoping to read East of Eden and some Russian novels this year as well.
You need to read the unabridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. If you read the abridged and didn't enjoy it, read the unabridged because the story is complete and it is wonderful.
So excited to hear what you think of the classics! My favorites are:
-Wuthering Heights
-Jane Eyre
-Of Mice and Men
-The Picture of Dorian Grey
-Dracula
-Lord of the Flies (this was really sad to me)
-To Kill a Mockingbird
-A Town Like Alice
-Crime and Punishment
- I LOVE the Hobbit too...just keep in mind that Tolkien describes everything for a long time...gets a bit tedious. I skipped over a lot of the songs ;)
To kill a mockingbird is a must read!!!!
I read like half and I just cant... it was so boring :(
Georgia Lees To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my all time favorite books!!!
The first half is boring, the second half is SO GOOD
Georgia Lees i read it for school and thought it was so boring up until the last couple pages. classics don't seem to be my thing lol.
Oh I read that one in HS! I should read it again though :)
Great selection of books you have collected. Some of my favorites in there. I loooooove East of Eden and Rebecca. And Jane Eyre. Have fun reading.
I agree with you that Sam is the real main hero of LOTR! :) Love him.
Emily you HAVE to read Wuthering Heights! it's my favourite classic and we usually have the same opinion ;)
cheers from italy:)
I totally agree, Wuthering Heights is a great novel. And the film wasn't bad either (the one with Ralph Fiennes), nor the song by Kate Bush lol.
Rebecca, East of Eden, and Anna Karenina are some of my favorite books!! The writing in all of them is so good! I have War & Peace but haven't read it yet.
I love Wuthering Heights and Rebecca! Those are two of my favorite classics! Also To Kill A Mockingbird is really good!!

That is DEFINITELY the abridged version of The Brothers Karamazov. The original has over 1k pages.
The version I have apparently has 2 parts and this is the first one!
Also i recommend Gone with the wind. Its my all time favorite. Mysterier is so good too

Virginia Woolf is one of my favorite authors! I just finished To the Lighthouse and I absolutely loved it!
War and Peace is amazing and watching the TV programme beforehand will definitely help you out with the huge range of characters :). ps love your videos!!!

Jane Eyre is an amazing read. I LOVE the Bronte sisters, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are two of my top 5 books.
Unpopular opinion- I like the Bronte sisters more than Jane Austen.
You should read "Crime and Punishment" from Fyodor Dostoyevsky, it's my favorite Russian classic book. 😊
I loved The Tenant of Wildfell Hall! Definitely check that one out! The Penguin English Library edition is gorgeous as well!
I love Jane Eyre! It starts a little slow but stick with it because it is so worth it :) And Then There Were None also gets a lot better
Read Wuthering Heights it is amazing!!!! I love that book I think you will like it. It is a must read
War and Peace is amazing!!! Tolstoi is perfect! And for me, the perfect Mr.Darcy is the 2005 version.
I love Jane Eyre! Such a powerful independent character.. so many feelings!
Many kisses from Italy 😘
I started The Karamazov Brothers 5 years ago and I am only halfway through, though I liked where it was going. One of my New Year's resolution is to end it ASAP!!! However, my edition is a lot longer than yours, over 1000 pages??

I've read some Jules Verne as a kid! I'm trying to find some Alexandre Dumas but in french!
Classics ❤ ❤ Love them, specially Dostoyevski, Tolstói, Christie and Tolkien books!..Hope you enjoy all the classics you have!
tess of the d'urbervilles is absolutely heartbreaking. prepare yourself! would also 10/10 recommend the miniseries with gemma arterton and eddie redmayne after reading it if your emotions can handle another round 👍
Will do :D
YES! This was so good. I own this one

am i the only one who thinks the beige shades of the book pages is really pleasing to look at? especially paired with the minimalistic background
I've been trying to collect editions of Peter Pan and that edition is so pretty!! Mrinalini Dayal As an Indian myself I like that it's funny though. You kinda have to separate it from the classic and just enjoy.
I recently ordered Mrs Dalloway as well! Excited to get into Woolf's books :) Lovely video! ♥
The Lord of the Flies is my all-time favorite stand alone book. A lot of people don't like it but there is so much symbolism and it is so fascinating. Rebecca is also very, very good.

I read it is high school! I need to reread it!
Cat cradle is amazing. It's hands down one of my favorites by him.
Can't wait to read it!
Oui je suis québécoise :)
Emily I just found your book channel and I'm so glad you're doing this! Shout out from BC :) xx
If you're going for more Austen, I'd suggest Emma next. I read those exact editions over the summer and it ended up being a fun read.
Jane Eyre is fantastic I plan on rereading it soon and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is an amazing book you must read it
I've been reading Ursula K. Le Guin's work. She's a sci-fi/fantasy writer and she touches upon very interesting themes. I'm interested to see what you'd say about her work! I'm currently reading Left Hand of Darkness, which is the one that my friends recommend, and Wizard of Earthsea.
Of the Jane Austen books, I loved Mansfield Park! It was just different and lovely and worth the read :) Emma was a lot of fun, though!
Bingley?
Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books. I love the sisters Bronte's writings ❤️❤️❤️
You are so very beautiful! And I love that you are reading & displaying classics, my favorite genre!
Really liked your book selection. I totally recommend you Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse-five". It's an unforgettable book. Greetings from Colombia!
my all time fave book is 1984 by George Orwell, a must read !
I think that's an abridged edition of The Brother's Karamazov, it's usually waaayyyyy bigger (800-1000 pages depending on the edition)
6:44 how come this Brothers Karamazov book is so small?? Mine is 1000+ pages 🤔
Two more amazing books to read: Little Women and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. :)
P.S. Sam is totally the hero!
Oh I hope you love Cat's Cradle. Vonnegut's humor is fantastic. He's very easy to read as well. If you don't like it, though, do NOT skip out on slaughterhouse 5. There's a reason that book is incredibly highly regarded, it's seriously a masterpiece
If you're looking for a classic sci-fi, I LOVED the time machine by HG Wells.
Thank you for all the suggestions :)
omg ive actually never read pride and prejudice (it is on my tbr though) but my mom showed me bridget jones' diary recently and i got on a colin firth kick so i watched pride and prejudice with him in it. gotta say i love him.
i'm curious to see what you think about The Road, the first time I read i didn't care for it, the second time i absolutely loved it. it can seem a bit of a "why is nothing happening" thing but turns out to be a pretty solid read. i love mccarthy and southern literature in general (i recommend flannery oconnor, walker percy, toni morrison and of civil right movement richard wright) and i think mccarthy has better books, this one was just hyped up by oprah lol.
In love for your book choices!
Nice haul! Did want to let you know you probably got am abridged version of The Brothers Karamazov - my edition is almost 900 pages
The Hobbit was my fav. to read and Wuthering Heights is so so good.
Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice are my all time favourite classics. You should totally read them like right now!! I'm sure you'll enjoy these 😊
As for the Jane Austen books, choosing Persuasion and Northanger Abbey seems a good idea. Maybe you can include Emma instead of Northanger Abbey.
The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit are all my favorites
The Lord Of The Flies is so damn good!!!
So many books that I love in this video 😂
