#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

Thank you for the continued support, and I hope you enjoyed this special (for me) episode of DOAG. We are self-sponsoring this video, so please check our social links for more information on how to follow and support us. I also upon re-watching this, felt I might have seemed a little too harsh on GunZ 2. I don't think it's a totally generic shooter, it just feels/looks MORE generic than GunZ 1. I personally think the biggest culprit with the sequel is how long it took to launch.
i'm just glad you're not talking about another mmorpg on the show
keep up the variety
Can you do a video on rise of incarnates someday? ua-cam.com/video/8MOjUvp4xFs/v-deo.html
I'll love is you could check S4League, what was the game where i burned most of my youth xD
Nice video bro, I remember play Gunz long time ago. But I here to ask if you investigate one game that is similar for me and is S4League, have diferrent charm and maybe to anime, but GOD DAMN I PLAY THAT LIKE A IDIOT good times.
@@THEDEY2 Yeah me too that and Gunz was my childhood.
I feel like there is a 1:1 relationship between mastery at Gunz: The Duel and early onset arthritis.
idk i sucked ass at it and my wrists are _still_ fucked
I had juvenile arthritis when this game came out and I can tell you it cured me, my joints were just ground into a fine paste and now my wrists can simply flop around at leisure!
I had to switch to d-style after a while because my poor little 9 year old joints weren't ready for the bodily sacrifice k style required 😂
Fuck i remember being pretty damn good at k and j style and my hands still hurt.
carpel tunnel maybe, but not arthritis.
That said, I was pretty good at guns, not great but good and my wrists are still in good shape.
As someone who played over 10 years of Ragnarok Online but never stepped my foot on the official server, the next video is going to be like watching a sinking of a ship from a yacht passing by.
I know right. Been playing for 20 years and never once set foot on the official server.
Oh I haven't thought about this game in years. It used to be a HUGE deal. So much fun!
Same with me. Haven't thought of it in nearly over two decades. But I used to really love this game back in the day, when buying games was, with luck, a tri-monthly thing because of a really low allowance. So a free online game which was that fun, had a HUGE impact on me. 😊
It's worth giving the game another go! Just Google FGunZ. They're averaging 100 players online daily.
Caught this 47 seconds after it went live and it already had a dozen likes. Good job!
This, Exteel and S4 League will forever hold special places in my heart. Rest in peace
I used to get this insane shoulder pain when playing because my shoulder would rise without me knowing while playing and stay locked in this horrible position while I sat on my kitchen chair with zero cushion. Over a decade later, when I feel the lack of my shoulder mobility, I always think fondly of gunz.
FGunZ has 500+ people online nowadays, crazy! No other server has survived this long and has been this active (10+ years).
Oh god, I remember playing this when I was a kid. K-Style is really a unique thing that no other games can ever replicate even till this day. I remember breaking around 5 keyboards back then, glad it was the cheap ones. Good times...
I used to LOVE this game. I even played "EuroGunz", the altered version of the game. Part of my childhood fr.
My fondest memories of GunZ: The Duel were installing it on my school's computers and introducing an entire classroom to what we now affectionately call: "Devil May Cry Online"
My fondest memories of GunZ 2: The Second Duel were how none of us could even play the game because of how often you clipped out of elevators.
Man i played this game to death back in the day. i still remember when a group of people wanted to teach me the "butterfly" style
This series has become one of my favorites on YT, keep up the good work guys
Main K-Style strat I remember is right click with sword and knock them on their ass, then unload dual uzis in their face point blank lol
I honestly couldn't tell you exactly why but this series is perfection. Thanks so much!
2:26 "homage" say it with me, "oh-Mahj".
Man, I miss these gunz days so much, never were really good at KS, but had my fun nways
I also played a lot of RaiderZ, especially on private servers, I miss it too and definitely would give a try if it came back alive :(
Man, GunZ was so great, I still go back and listen to the Ryswick Style theme now and again
Oh man!!!! Miss those days where used to play this from a gaming cafe. So many memories, wish something like this comes again...
Thank you for this video. 🙂
Do you guys remember the other playing styles besides k-style's sword/shotgun?
Like Euro-style that focused on precision high DMG rifles from medium/long distance while utilizing gadgets like various grenades to their benefit and kodachi/daggers as their melee option of protection.
And of course the "sprayers" that basically was made out of newbs in general that just kept their fire button pressed until ammo ran out on their dual wielded sub machine guns.
This is the only game where I had a Student-Master relationship with someone. And felt like i was passing the torch by teaching a new guy k-style under me.
Gunz was the game I accepted that I will always be trash at but it was always so fun to play.
I remember this game, playing it with a good friend of mine.
He is no longer with us and I miss him and this game.
GunZ, Rakion, S4 League, Gunbound, and Rumble Fighter.
The peak of mid-2000s F2P online games.
Ah, the good ol' days of Level Up Games... I remember all the days that I skipped classes to play The Duel and Grand Chase in the local lan house...
good on you spreading more awareness, glad to see someone keeping this game alive on the sidelines socially.
I love GunZ. It will NEVER DIE with the OGs who know what the game was all about. Thanks (kinda? Lmao) for bringing some attention to the game. The game has been organically regrowing the last couple years after the few viral YT hits. ❤
Edit: ah man, you should’ve reached out to some in the community, there’s a lot of incorrect information, dates, etc in this. But that’s alright, thanks for the exposure anyhow ❤
Could you provide any examples? No offense but the least you could do is that if you are going to make such claims.
@@nerdSlayerstudioss I did in a separate comment as I watched through.
Oh wow, how did I never hear of this game at the time, looks like a pretty neat evolution of the gameplay of the Jedi Knight sequels I was playing a load in the years leading up to this coming out.
Hop on and play then! There's a gladiator culture that's pretty involved, no guns used so a lot easier to get into and more similar to JA
i saw this game born and die here in brazil, published by Level Up! games.
it was so fun and dashing when i played it, but then hackers start their reign of terror and ruined the game in brazilian servers, closing the game soon after, when steam became a thing and gunz 2 came out.
it was a very sad time when the duel died. i remember i played for hours while listening limp bizkit's greatest hits! so awesome! ^^
good memories. could live it again if i could.
Dude! I freaking miss GunZ! Some of the best online gaming moment's I had when I was a kid. Also some of the worst when I got grounded from playing it too much...
I remember going to a friend's house and being introduced to GunZ, I guess it must have been during the beta period, because I distinctly remember changing schools in 2006 and losing contact with that friend, but either way, I was amazed by how that game played, it was like it came straight from the anime shows we used to watch, it was unlike anything else out there, it was flashy, stylish, fresh and difficult as fuck. I never got into it, because I guess I must have missed out on the launch, and the game was so niche that you wouldn't really hear about it unless you went out of your way looking for information, so it just came and went for me, but it did leave an impression on me, I _still remember_ playing GunZ, however briefly, and loving it, so much so that when I saw the thumbnail that immediately sent me back.
Man i was in high school when gunz came out. I had such a fun time, and agree that no game really replicated gunz even gunz 2 didn't. S4 league does come in mind though with less cancels.
Now at the end of the video... i see Ragnarok Online... my baby mmo that i will forever love. I played the beta, sank countless hours and made so many memories. I was mostly a child through ROs hype but i still remember it fondly
I played GunZ so much when I was younger. Our horrible HP family computer absolutely could NOT run it properly and I was SO bad at it. Despite that, I loved it so much, I thought it was so cool and that eventually I’d get good at it and be cool for some reason.
Let’s drop the current top FPS and third person shooter streamers into a GunZ match and see what happens.
I know why I have carpal syndrome and I'm happy I was decent at this epic game I played alot of Koren games growing up Kal online drift city a dope side shooter.. man I wish I remember the name of it I miss my childhood kids these days are missing out finding a good game and showing your friends man... I miss 2004
Im assuming you saw Knockout City, crossfire X, and rumbleverse. You're one busy detective
gunz is still alive launchers like FPX and freestyle have 500 plus players daily and tik tokers introducing new people to this game helped
oh my god .. .... ive put so many hours into this game, i was bringing over dbf and tbf and hs and qhs and all those techs as they were being discovered on the korean servers and i remember spending so much time teaching people AND THE CLAN BATTLES MEANT EVERYTHING i.. i wish animation canceling high speed third person shooter was a real genre with more than like 2 games in it
Fact. 2003. I was playing Gunz directly from Maiet Entertainment since 2003, not 2006. But ok. I mean there were a few couple of Cybercafés in Caracas where you could actually play Gunz back in 2004 and it was all in Korean but playable. Something quite remarkable for those Cybers.
This video just hit me in my childhood feels. This game was iconic and if the developers weren’t so inept and took advantage of how their bad programming made it so, this game could’ve been so legendary. As Kadai once said in a previous video. This could’ve been THE E-Sport back then.
Theres still hope for a gunz successor! Project reloaded is moving slow but man it looks sweet.
Oh man, this and S4 League were obsessions of mine lol
this game went hard in the paint back in middle school
I forgot about this game! I loved Gunz I played it very intensely for a brief time in 07 with a small group of friends. Ultimately got turned off by the spamminess of K-style and pay to win features.
I really loved the aestetics and environments of the game.
Holy crap! I didnt know anyone else played the first one!!!!!!! I used to play this all the time!
I think it was this and that Nitto Racing game all the gents would play
bro i remember wanting to play raganarok as a kid! I can't wait to see next vid.
3 words I love while playing GUNZ :
1.SPRAYER
2 D-STYLE
3. E-LUNGE
PS : RiP on every mouse and keyboard destroyed for playing this masterpiece.
I played so much GunZ and S4 League when i was younger, sad to see it go but after so many hackers i was done with GunZ
I wish game developers wouldn't put so much worth into realism. The most fun games are those that aren't realistical but have some bugs or unexpected solutions to problems. I love games where you simply explore vs. those games where 1000x tutorials are smashed into your face, in the end just to press a button to cast a spell.
Awwww man! There was Gungrave: Versus?? Damn.
I guess I should have spent more time on the internet back in the day.
😅
Maaan this brings back so many memories
I miss gunz. Getting online and going to cw and trying to break gosu or Spartas streak
oh no this one is gonna hurt
this was my afterschool fun and I spent ages learning everything about the tech in this game,,
Very nice video! Love that game even if it killed my wrists and I wasn't that great LMAO. I always did wonder what happened behind the scenes to make it fail. Great coverage!!
I dont care if it has been forgotten , it was one of the coolest games i have ever played .
YOOO THIS WAS MY SHIT!! I REMEMBER BACK IN 08 SUMMER TIME, THIS WAS POPPING!! banging on my parents computer keyboard lololol trying to master k style while having a good ass time in mansion atk and Def etc and 100 kill death match, leave at 98 kills before the match ends lol, good ole days ❤
Ah GunZ, the original source of my carpal tunnel.
"hadn't seen before"
The Specialists has joined the chat
Gunz was my childhood.
K-style and the other styles was simultaneously the biggest draw of the game, as well as its downfall I feel. Well as you said, combined with the elitism and toxic community at the time, it was such an off putting game once you were locked into the level 20+ lobbies. I loved Gunz The Duel regardless, and I actually liked Gunz The Second Duel since I was more casual. I will still never forget Airplane man shooting grenades from his heavy machine gun, it was basically a boss battle. It was a Gunz lobby were half the players were hackers, but they were using very odd, and kind of silly hacks I had never seen before. The heavy lag gun, shoots smoke grenades, I miss those days.
Man, I loosely remember playing the Beta of this waybackwhen and sucking badly. It was one of those niche titles I remember seeing pop up on an MMO forum that I gave a go, enjoyed, but when realising it lacked RPG elements and that I wasn't good at it, gave up on. Actually kinda stunned to hear about it again since I feel like I heard nothing about it ever since (which makes sense from what this video described), but glad to see it thrived as a cult classic.
Imagine a company like epic games buys and remakes and remodels the game. that would be fire
Miss clan wars, sword dueling. 😢
people were doing gunz private servers way before 2011
You should totally do a video on Jedi Academy
still praying masang soft drops the steam version 💀
man the nostalgia... gunz.. and then next vid is ragnarok online. both my childhood
It is probably the only Shooter game where buying a bigger and badder gun ain't going to make you win in a gunfight lmfao.
I used to be og good at this game people thought I hacked, good times. Does anyone remember Exteel? That was like a close second with mechs, very fun back in the day
This is a game that should be remastered.
this hurts a lot... Gunz was great... another game i loved was Exteel... i hope they get resurrected somehow
Besides all the spastic jumping around and floaty movement, this is totally the type of game I wish were around today. We need more third person action shooters like this, that are for ADULTS and not kids.
Nothing will ever compare, one of a kind :(
GunZ is one of the favorite games of my childhood with fun, chaostic gameplay, nice gun/equipments and large community. But it lost it own charm with GunZ 2
Watching the footage makes me think of Warframe of all things.
this game was so much jank, but also fun... next up I want a video on Warrock!
I didn't think this video would ever happen. I fucking loved this game.
Haha man I remember playing this game quite a lot back in the day, good times haha. I remember trying to practice climbing up the walls doing the slash movements and all lol! 🤣 Some people used to be really good at this game haha. Fun memories lol! 😆
What an amazing era of gaming
Gunz the duel was soo good. A shame there has been no other game like it since. I heard rumors some years back that there was a game called Renegadez ( i think ) that was supposed to be a successor in the works. Seen some really early alpha looking footage back then on youtube but I assume maybe it has been cancelled at this point.
Jedi Academy? Bro we grew up in the same gaming Lan
You should cover S4 League one day
Could have been the best niche/underground esport ever. IJJI commited a warcrime.
Uh oh Ragnarok is next. There's a great case of absolute wasted potential.
Lol the mobility+gunplay in this reminds me of warframe
Is Naraka Blade Pint kind of the successor ?
I never thought I'd see you cover this. GunZ is one of my favorites from back in the day and the only people who seem to know it are those who also came from then.
Truly way ahead of its time and it was all due to unintended mechanics. Now we got games like Naraka Bladepoint which is similar in its difficulty and stylistic expression (quick swapping between melee and ranged weapons, gliding, ect).
i miss rocket launcher set 😂😂 during dbf sword style
I would really like you to take a look into S4 League
This game, S4 League and Microvolts are very similar when it comes to the competitive aspect, all of them are from korea and all of them died for the exactly the same reason, pay to win mechanics and lack of support from the development team. It is a shame really.
Can you do an episode for S4 League?
i wonder if S4 will get a video too...
GunZ is a Whole Flaw itself... A outstanding flaw. Catch me in the servers - Slap
This game rules and we're still trying to keep it afloat across various private servers. Shameless promo, but I put out videos of modern day gameplay ^^
Loved this game, well its private servers, didnt like the grind and limitations. Used mainly revolvers in tdm cause, unless the server was laggy, you could pull off some amazing shit with those.
Ugh, this one breaks my heart as much as K-style/J-style used to break my keyboard and wrists. I absolutely loved GunZ, and was so sad it never got a proper follow up.
I as a wee teen never learned all the techniques, but still had a helluva time with this game.
Most games were a mix of like a 10 "noobs" to 2 k-styling ratio, so there was still plenty of kills to be netted by us non-leet folk.
And I loved hiding behind things with my sword in the wall in crafty places where people would run right past me without seeing me lol.
loved to the point when hackers ruin the game, it was unplayable, plus massive lag issues with the servers...oh forgot it was peer to peer blah no wonder it lagged so much
I never got the hang of k-style or j-style completely. So I would just not play the game that way. Still seemed to do pretty good against most of the players that did do it though, though I think thats mostly just because I would throw them off because While I couldn't personally do k-or J style I'd seen enough players to know their habbits. I started playing with a knife sometimes because I never guarded anyway.
@@OneWingedRose Nah, it was more like 8 noobs, 2 K styles, and one or maybe 2 hackers. I remember hackers getting so bad in the free and low level lobbies that I just use to make new characters purely to go into games to mess with them My friend and I use to double team them and juggle them in the air non-stop when they had the invincible cheat active. I remember the pattern that we practiced to lock them out of moving by heart. Slash, slash, uppercut, slash slash uppercut, Slash slash slash, switch players, uppercut, repeat. Until they would get pissed and just quit the game.
Playing this back in the day feels like another life
This game was like the best drug ever. I was so addicted. The fights, the clan wars, the shit talking, the 1 v 1s….there was nothing and will never be anything as good as GunZ the duel.
the true game where you would 1v1 in Shower Room
I loved Gunz: The Duel but my hands still feel pain from how much styling and dancing I did. I'd literally come home from school and hop straight into Gunz until dinner, everyday, for months. The hackers were eventually what had me quit.
For me it has been the Brazilians flooding every server with 700 ping
This and S4 League (arguably deserves its own episode) were honestly some of my first adventures into multiplayer action-y games and I think about them every so often. Never found another game that replicated the same feeling those two gave me.
The S4 League soundtrack tho...
S4 was such a banger in its own right, hope NS covers it some point. The OST is still in my general playlist I listen to daily.
Ah yeah S4League. Great game that ended up going down a similar path to Gunz - overly monetized and nearly destroyed by hackers. But man was it fun.
@@foriarez944 no kidding bro. the soundtrack was awesome. I still listen to NB power from time to time.
seeing as NS hearted this, I eagerly await the S4 League video. That one's definitely gonna hit like a truck for me.
So a quick correction at 21:30 the DMCA takedowns were not by Masangsoft. What happened was a private server owner impersonated Maiet, the original rights holder to GunZ, and issued DMCA takedowns on videos which involved/promoted private servers that weren't the impersonator's own. Great video nonetheless, was a real treat to see GunZ get DOAG'd
YES, also before ijji got gunz there was "igunz" or "international Gunz" as like a test for na or something, that's when i first played and then the servers went down for a few months, THEN ijji gunz began in like 2007. now a pserver is named "igunz/international gunz" so it can get confusing
The way copyright laws work, Masangsoft buying the rights and then sitting on them is probably the best way for them to support private servers and keep the game alive.
Licencing deals usually require products be made at regular intervals to renew the contract. If another company had retained the IP, fan servers and secondary content were always under threat of legal action.
except for the part where they do nothing to help us in these legal battles. I and many other people helped get tons of videos get reinstated thanks to the help of UA-cam, but they literally retracted their contact with me via support ticket on their website when I reached out to them at the time (2 years ago).@@Grizabeebles
and now we have another guy, claiming to be the "new IP owner", with a fake copyright for the game, DMCA-striking our community discord and DDOSing everyone out of their minds, while running a server off of SEO, claiming to be "official" and trying to make their website as generic-looking as possible so as to trick people who know nothing about the game into believing that their server is "official gunz"
I'm goldenfa I asked (paid) for this death of a Game. Thanks @nerdSlayer Studios, you did great job. I'm still so sad about this game, one thing that I often do is listen the GunZ OST, I find it so unique and great for an online game from the mid 2000s. I still have hope to see a spiritual successor in the future.
Thanks to Goldenfa without him, we wouldn't have made this video. Seriously your words mean a lot!
Hero
Thanks for suggesting this one, boss.
the main menu theme gives me the feels
Thank you, that is very kind of you and it's very much appreciated.
Holy crap, at 18:12 when the lobby music started... The nostalgia was overwhelming. I played so much gunz in highschool. Didn't even know it had a sequal. I did play some Raiderz beta though and it was really cool! I'm looking forward to that video.
The nostalgia is so real! The music caught me off guard. Good times, good times...
Raiderz was a very underrated MMO. It was rough, but the base gameplay was greate.
Yea... that lobby music is breathtaking
