I wish MGS4 had more sneaking levels with humans. It’s one of the rare stealth games where you can sneak in an environment where your opponents are at war with another faction

I liked MGS V, but i feel like it just wasn't... finished.. yknow? Like compared to MGS 3 (wit the pillS) and MGS4 i don't have cool shit like sneaking through a Mujajadheen/Soviet warzone while Quiet snipes from a derelict tower, watching the competing Mercenaries do crazy stuff. And while i did like feeling like a one man army super spy sneaking through a huge airport and crap, i wish there was just.. a bit more yknow?

Agreed. i call MGS4 a beautiful bonsai tree that was killed with over-pruning. the really good shit is so broken up, you never really can get a big satisfying chunk of gameplay out of it. I want multi-hour sessions on battlefields, running into problems, solving them, sneaking, surviving.
MGSV is the opposite issue. There's hundreds of hours of gameplay you can drop in and out of, literally, at almost any area in the game. But nothing is really happening because it's just 1 faction of NPCs. It's got good sneaking and action but Kojima decided to import his HR dept simulator from peace walker so you have to worry about that shit now.

How the heck did they actually get an iPod in the game? To answer my own question:
"According to MGS4 Integral Podcast #1, the reason for the iPod's inclusion in Metal Gear Solid 4 was because the members of Kojima Productions were fans of Apple products, and they got permission from Apple to use it in-game after showing them a short demonstration video.
    "
    Bonus facts:
"The inclusion of the iPod in the game was heavily criticized as a distracting promotion. However, it is not unusual for military personnel to use iPods in combat. In particular, Bullet Flight, an iPod Touch application that makes ballistic calculations, is used by real world U.S. snipers."
    - Metal Gear Fandom

    • @FuturasoundProductions
      @FuturasoundProductions  4 роки тому +75

Amazing comment! I'd also venture a guess and say that the iPod's inclusion has implications for the 'SOP' System concept. The advent of digital music via Apple's devices put everyone onto a single 'system' culturally. The iPod, iTunes et al provided a filter to block painful realities by way of a potentially endless stream of emotional data (in the form of music). Apple no longer reigns over the realm of music like it did back in 2008, having ceded ground to sites like Spotify and even UA-cam in the Streaming Age.
It's debatably also a nod to the fact that, like the PS3, Apple technology often uses closed architecture systems web.stanford.edu/dept/SUL/sites/mac/primary/docs/open.html

Regarding the iPod, yeah I definitely think that fits the themes on display and again makes sense at that point in time. It's insane how much there is in these games, I' bet even Dirk Gently would have trouble comprehending Kojima's interconnectedness of all things.

    • @CancunMimosa
      @CancunMimosa 4 роки тому +8

@@FuturasoundProductions That is quite a convoluted comment and pointless link. The iPod, and the numerous other Apple products included in the game, were only done so because the developers were fans of the industrial design and reached out to Apple - as Filip already cited. It is quite rare for a company to license their product's likeness into media. This has nothing do with putting people into a "system", or the music distribution industry. This is about quality work being appreciated.

What was great about this multi is that you HAD to play as a real squad to be effective. If you found players who wanted to play as a team instead of going Rambo, you were pretty much invincible. And everyone could play the way they wanted to. Some were more into CQC, others into precision weapons, others into explosives or handguns... I think one of the mistakes they made were the DLCs for MGO which in my opinion were underwhelming and should've been free to play. I got my current nickname from MGO and I've kept it ever since!

I never got far in it, but now I think I have enough understanding of the game, and what it was going for to enjoy it, as well as finish it. Funny how you can have such a vastly different experience with a game, just by knowing how it is really intended to be played.
One guy was saying he didn't like Farcry4, but liked 5. I talked him into playing 4, and going in knowing it is actually more a precise shooter then just empty this amount of bullets anywhere, and get the same result. Knowing what you're getting into is really helpful with the overall experience. @Starscream91 How can you put philosophical and MGS:V into the same sentence? MGS:V WAS the game that felt like an MGS Fanfiction gone wrong. Volgin re-appearing as a flame dude because of the fake Snakes hatred? A bad plot twist of some random medic in a helicopter being a replacement for boss? Sounds like a 15yr old has written that.
MGS4 gave us a clash between the 2 brothers, a conclusion to all their fights, that they were made by men, only to fight. The entire storyline of the patriots was ended, a group that wanted to control the world, its wars and everything by nanomashines and technology.
It gave us an idea of how that system was abused to control the entire world, so that nobody could decide for himself. They chose how war plays out, like puppets.

21:01 That is not actual destruction physics. It's pre-made destruction animations most likely. The staircase gets destroyed in the exact same manner every single time. Same goes for exploding vans and stuff - it's probably just a model swap covered by the explosion effects.

    • @westingtyler1
      @westingtyler1 4 роки тому +21

yeah. as a game dev using blender and unity, I can explain it more. what you do is simulate the physical event, like a building exploding or crumbling, in blender, and tell it to save the keyframes of the pieces as an animation file. then you can import that entire building model into unity with the animation, and you play the pre-baked animation just like any other, so even though it LOOKS physical, it's really just a pretend simulation created FROM a previously-made real simulation.
OR, such an animation could be made entirely in the game engine, in which case it would likely look less physically-accurate than doing it ahead of time in the 3d modeling software as a real simulation.
the reason is, an animation with keyframes to play, takes WAAAAY less processing at run-time, than a real-time simulation would.

I have not found anyone talking about this hidden mechanic on the websites that talk about secrets. I was hoping to find out something in this video. Another hidden mechanic no one talks about is related to the vibration. In chapter 4 it happened to me that when a Gekko looks at Snake but without seeing he because is camouflaged, I can hear a slight heartbeat in the form of vibration from the controller.

I'm in my early 20's, and I distinctly remember getting my first game console, PlayStation 3, in March 2008. My parents had been looking for a backwards compatible model for a while. My dad finally found one a few hundred kilometers away.
I've had my fondest gaming memories with PS3. Uncharted and The Last of Us are my all-time favorite games, but MGS as a franchise is closing in on them.
I spent pretty much all of 2019 playing MGSV. It was amazing to kind of live in another, fictional, but still partly real world. I got so into the game that I wanted to buy the other entries in the series.
As for the other entries in the MGS franchise, I played MGS4 for the first time a couple of months ago. I also bought a physical copy of MGS1 for PS1 to play on my PS3.
Multiplayer games are nice in that you can jump in and out of them whenever you want (given that you have no other obligations), but single player games take you to a different word, to one in which you can live your life as someone else.
I've struggled with letting myself get as into the fictional worlds of single player games as before. Now that I'm in my twenties, there's a lot of things that I have to take care of and thus, I can't get "lost" in a game world so easily anymore.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience. It reminded me of my own experiences, and I wanted to share them with you.

I played mgs4 on ps3 6 months before the ps4 came out and to this day, after having played many dozens, maybe 150 odd games since... to this day I still feel that no other game is nearly as high tech and innovative, mgs4 broadened the horizons of what is possible in games, what kind of experiences can be had, topics explored, how far outside the box can you go as a creator without alienating your player base... yet sadly no other developer seems as inspired, driven, daring, curious or ultimately as creative as kojima.
Obviously graphics have come a very long way since then, and there have been some advancements in audio, but these advances seem to be more more often in the tools and tech used by developers and not in how developers are thinking or using them, unlike kojima who seems to break every tool at his disposal down and think hard about how best to utilize it to achieve his vision, and boy is he visionary.
There are other amazing studios and games, naughty dog, Santa Monica with last of us and god of war 4, both highly innovative studios who have enjoyed (and earned) the recognition that comes with best selling genre-defining games, and I could mention many others, but kojima doesn't just make genre-defining games, he makes games that redefine gaming, period. This is why kojima is so loved by fans, it is why his absence is felt between games, because we who play are addicted to the magic, to that sense of wonder you felt the first time you experience something you didn't know was possible in a perfect blend of learning, excitement, emotion and style.
I'm so glad Sony gave him the freedom to make whatever he wanted after konami made such fools of themselves at kojima and his fans expense, a perfect example of creativity being crushed for profit and how poorly executives seem to understand this precious artform that makes them rich, you can't put a bird in a cage and expect people to pay to see it fly, and with Sony supporting kojima fans can rejoice every time this creative genius takes flight.

@Daniel Capric Hideaki Itsuno. He made DMC 3, and helped make DMC1. The ps2 wasn't powerful enough to make smart AI enemies in the amount necessary to create the challenge they wanted to make. So Itsuno and his team pieced together low level AI, so as to allow them the ability to have a large number of enemies on screen, without a drop in the 60fps. Not only that, but when pieced together, they would amplify the difficulty by quite a bit. It is very much so like chess, and each level of difficulty would resemble a novice (but still decent), all the way up to a master. The ingenius thought to lessen the AI, so they could actually create what they wanted for the final product is actually quite literally what you are talking about, but now they do not innovate in general in gaming.
This very thought process is what the golden age of gaming was in a nutshell, and not fast approaching upgrades in hardware. The bunk excuse of things moving faster at that time compared to now is garbage, as an old 2005 game still mechanically bests mosts games to date, and only needs a update for the camera, and a slight facelift for that little extra. The way most devs are either forced to follow, or choose to follow in game design leaves so much space for innovation, that it's honestly more of the industry than the devs at fault. Capcom was Crapcom until recent years, and finally we got DMC5 after years of wait, and since Capcom has backed off its stupid time frames for the devs cycle, we got a great game.
Now I'm not sure about his other games as I never played them, but DMC3 still holds up as one of the best action games to date, and that is 15 years after its release. So there are other devs who do the same, but might get locked out of their creativity as the company might force unreasonable deadlines, causing a lack of innovation. After all, Itsuno made DMC4 as well, and it has the blemish of being unfinished since it was given to small an amount of development time for such a game.

One of the most expertly crafted action games I've ever played. The gameplay absolutely holds up to this day. Also, the way the story was told was wonderful. If only MGSV did the same...

i hope not too many people take this video seriously - i came in here looking for actual hidden details and gameplay mechanics and all i got was a 30 minute long ad (for an old game?) of someone misunderstanding (and promoting) buzzword usage and attributing many things to the wrong cause

Around the halfway point you really started padding the video. PC gaming had 3D positional audio back in the 90's. Plenty of games like Half Life 2 took pictures of areas to use as reference and used photo realistic graphics on recreations of physical objects. None of this stuff was a revolution exclusive to MGS4

    MGS3 is a PS3 game in a PS2.
    MGS4 is a PS4 game in a PS3.
Death Stranding is a game released before SARS-COV2 lockdowns and the rise of deliveries.
MGS2 is a game reflecting upon memes and fake news released a decade or two before the proliferation of such things.
At this point Kojima seems to have visions of the future.

The tech and creativity was great but unfortunately I think the actual game was quite short and linear. The levels make it look like they are big or sprawling but at best you got for a fork in the path. The 2ns half of the game is smaller. I remember being amazed at how fast I could complete it when I skipped cutscenes, which despite all the talk about how seamless they were, they were actually the most annoying and interrupted gameplay more than other game to date. Even at the start you literally walk 2 steps and then go under a truck before another cutscenes. They should have had more levels than cutscenes.

Currently playing MGS4 again for more than the 15th time and it still amazes me how technichaly flawless it is. From camera work in cutscenes to gameplay mechanics, character models (wich are easily the best on that generation), the physics, sound and visual effects and many many other details, the work put in this game is just incredible. I still consider it one of the best games out there for the massive amount of quality it has.

@@martinramirez21 I totally agree. It blows my mind when people say "Yeah mgsV plot is garbage but gameplay wise it's the best!". I think when they say it they mean it again has the most mecanics, I wouldn't believe anyone can prefer playing through mgsv instead of mgs3. MGS3 has such a great pace, such great bosses, so much to offer while also being very focused

Rex vs Ray, Solid riding with Big Mama, Big Boss killing Zero, Shadow Moses... MGS4 is chalked full so many memorable moments on top of tying the franchise together. And didn't miss a beat on the franchises commentary on the psychological implications of war as well as a stronger emphasis on the speculative evolution of the war economy. Venom snakes chapter being the only real loose end, MGS4 was a love letter to the franchise. It even came with a complete downloadable digital glossary or Blu-ray if you got the limited edition.

Nice to see some appreciation for MGS4. The MGS2 elitist fanbase has really done a number on this game's reputation in the years since it's release. It's too bad the internet is absorbed by the zero sum game mentality. It's not enough to just like a game and leave it at that, you have to teardown anything that can be compared to it.

You're talking about a derivative stealth game with battlefield-based set pieces. CT was still at bottom in the same vein as previous SC titles. MGS4 integrated warfighting and stealth like no game in the genre before it. There's simply no comparison.

    • @Gunplabro

At no point in CT do you sneak through an active Battlefield with two to three distinct factions fighting it out that you can help or hinder.

    • @ericlewis3562

Futurasound Productions Chaous Theory still rules, it might not be as grandiose as any Metal Gear Solid game, but in terms of actual accessibility and gameplay, it far surpasses its MGS contemporaries. For how amazing MGS 2 and MGS 3 are, their controls are unintuitive and actually sneaking around feels cumbersome. Unless you’ve played the games several times and know exactly what what to do, you’re constantly setting off alerts and stumbling around enemies.
In contrast, Chaos Theory plays like a game released this year (I’m talking only about the controls). In fact, MGS 4 and 5 control very similar to Chaos Theory, and I don’t think it’s because Kojima Productions simply copied Ubisoft, it’s just that Chaos Theory had the first great control setup for navigating a 3-D environment.
Like you said, the MGS games were limited by their roots as a 2D series, the controls for MGS 1,2 and 3 make much more sense as controls for a 2D game. Splinter Cell got a head start because it was designed from the start to be a 3-D game.
As for the level in Seoul, it’s the first stealth level in an active battlefield, but by technicality only. Because of technical limitations, the “battle” is largely just set dressing, its more akin to a Disney theme park ride rather than a battle fought by the AI with NPCs. But Chaos Theory still slaps with its excellent level design.
