- Let's deflask (or ex-vitro), sterilize, transplant, and acclimate my first ever tissue culture import order of tropical plants - at home! Featuring some hard-to-find #aroids -- a couple of rare variegated Philodendrons & a special guest, Monstera deliciosa "Mint"!
I thought I'd capture my #deflasking experience and share how the process went for me, as well as pass along some of the info I dug up on the topic. Definitely not a perfect process (on my part, lol), but it should be fun and - hopefully - educational!

It doesn't look like the supplier is a good tissue culture source. I would be very upset if I received babies like that.

Hi there - thanks for the question. Unfortunately I didn't have the best quality plants come through in the order in this video. I did one order a month or two afterwards and have 2 or 3 plants left from the second one, but that first order was a pretty shitty experience - I won't order from that supplier again.
From the first order, I do still have the P. Caramel Marble, but I've kept it in a small container and it's sizing up very slowly. I'm also concerned that it's not even variegated, in which case I think my seller scammed me. I won't be sure until I take it out of its current enclosure and let it breathe a bit. The Monstera Mint died on me almost immediately, as did its replacement (well documented later in the channel and I discuss it in my next video as well), and the P. Red Andersons were all pretty much DOA. I had 2 of the batch that survived. One was attacked by mold well after I had it deflasked (couple of months later) and it had been doing pretty well prior - I think I probably should have done a better job of cleaning the plantlets on the way out of their original substrates. The second and final remaining Red Anderson unfortunately died while I was on vacation - it dried out on a heat mat I forgot I had left on,
All in all, what I'd change in this video is the cleaning process. I would have spent much longer (15m+) cleaning the plantlets. Mold/fungal overgrowth seems to be the thing that gets you immediately if you don't clean all of the original media off properly and I don't think I did here. I'll have to do a post-mortem at some point but I'm honestly pretty burnt out by TC importing in general now. 😬 x
hey! what a greate video man! justr wanted to ask what "noid" means, im not a native english speaker and im having touble translating that word :( , i saw that word on the monstera mint "noid" thnaks in advance :3

"NOID" is just shorthand for "No ID", as in "no identification" or "unidentified". It's often used with plants when no positive identification has been made and likely won't ever be made. In the case of the Monstera "Mint", there are a couple of forms we know about, but the prevalent one is not currently identified. It may still be classified at some point in the future as a variant of M. deliciosa, but for now most sellers refer to it as "NOID".

Hey there! Absolutely, you can totally use moss, the reason I avoid it for TC plants is a combo of how finicky it is for retaining moisture and how fast it dries out in open air. In an enclosed container, you need to be super careful about how moist the moss going in is so you don't rot out your plantlet. If you're in open air or a larger container (not suggested with TC plantlets, they're pretty sensitive), then the top layer of moss has a tendency to dry out very quickly given any kind of airflow.
I used Fluval Stratum in this example as a first-timer, but based on my more recent experiences with deflasking TC plantlets, in the future I think I'd probably go either 100% perlite (cheaper and reliable) or 50%/50% perlite/stratum. Also, tree fern or a combo of TF + perlite would probably work just as well, but I have yet to try it. Hope that helps!

@MyLocksMyPlants Just whatever you do... don't do sphagnum moss on top if LECA. I tried it a few times in an enclosed environment (seedlings) and it did not go well. Tree fern on LECA works ok just because it doesn't get quite as soggy but I'm probably going to avoid doing layered LECA with the softer natural substrates in the future.

Hey again, planty peeps! Had some fun and ordered in a few tissue culture (TC) plantlets earlier this month and recorded my experience deflasking, sterilizing, and transplanting them for posterity, as well as how to kick off the acclimation process. I thought I'd post how it went here, all the while passing along some of the info I dug up on the topic.
I definitely learned a few useful things for the next time around... and since I have another TC order arriving sometime this week, that "next time around" will be coming up pretty soon. 😉

I wouldn't buy from them again. Seems like a high contamination rate.
The level of contams is off the charts. Terrible supplier.
