    To answer one of the questions Stephen asked in regards to the helicopter and how it knows where to go itself:
    To orient itself it will use visual odometry (using a camera), altitude measurement using lidar, gyro and tilt sensors and a zigbee to communicate and to track the position, plotting its own coordinates inside its miniature Linux based computer (same cpu as an older Samsung Galaxy phone).
    Zigbee communication is effective up to about 1000m or even farther and has been tested with UAVs on Earth already so in that sense it's pretty exciting to see it work on another planet.
    It works very similar in that sense to some of the commercial Parrot copters you can buy that can follow your phone around - very similar open source tracking software, except that it's tracking the rover via zigbee communication

      As much as I LOVE science. Neil deGrasse Tyson fails to understand that we in society are ALL heroes.
      People who take your trash every week keep you from getting sick, just as much as the Lab Workers who developed the COVID Vaccines. The difference is the guys that take out the trash get paid a lot less and will NEVER be considered any kind of hero.

      @@goyoelburro nah, a hero is someone who goes above and beyond what is the acceptable norm to help. As a society we have decided that trash pickup is the norm for sanitation reasons. It would be no differemt from recognizing someone for washing their hands after wiping their ass. We can appriciate waste disposal workers without cheapening the efforts that selflessly give of themselves to better society.
      Trash pickup is also simply becasue we as a society are lazy fucks and wpuld rather pay someone to pick it up than take it to the landfill ourselves..btw your trashman gets paid quite well. Better than most "scientists"

      NASA Bean Counters and Management: Sounds like a waste. WE don't see any value. (though it was just explained)
      Elon (Public facing reason): We're placing cameras everywhere because people want a close up of this stuff.
      Elon (Real reason): We have the NASA engineer from 1990.

      @luckyfish85 3 роки тому

      @@MarcSylex I see it a bit different from that... Elon has a great team of engineers and thats the key for success of spacex. But instead of keeping an “arrogant” big entity behavior like NASA ( we are too important to care about showing you guys videos so be happy with some black and white image). He is using an existing and simple technology to involve and excite people. Its exactly like the arrogance of big car manufacturers. The technology has been there for years and we saw once in a decade some big company show some fugly electric prototype that will make someday so keep dreaming... So NASA is following Elon and VW too which is what they should have done in the first place.
