The fact of the matter is all you have to go on is hearsey. He-said she-said. None of us were involved, so why would you judge a person as guilty off of rumors? And that goes for both sides. You can just as easily use this as reason not to defend him either. Quite frankly, it does not involve you, and you should not chastise anyone for rumors, so just go about your life. I'm not saying buy his book, but just ignore him. If hearsey is enough to make you lable him as an awful person, then great, you don't have to pay attention to him. You can just go about your day without having to stir up drama with those with differing opinions. @SunflowerSpotlight 4 роки тому +22

      Or if they did, they’d usually wait ages and then never address it. It might be more uncomfortable, but it’s also kinder, I think, to get it out.
      It is tricky, because i think a lot of people have mixed emotions. Personally, I really dislike the suspicion immediately thrown on someone who reports sexual misconduct of some kind. If it’s a woman, there’s an air of, “Well, were you leading him on? Sure you’re not just regretting it or trying to get him in trouble?”
      And with men there’s another bias entirely. “But you’re a dude. Either a guy made you his b*%#h or... you’re not seriously telling me a woman did it? So are you saying you’re such a punk you can’t stop a chick or maybe you just regret what happened but weren’t complaining at the time.”
      It sucks that there’s a level of suspicion and stigma around reporting that isn’t at the same level with reports of other kinds of crimes. There are people who lie about it happening, absolutely, who either don’t report the actual facts and embroider, or just make it up entirely. But the numbers of cases like that are similar to the numbers in other areas of crimes reported, so the extra suspicion does nothing but make the people reporting feel like utter trash.
      Of course, swinging the other way and wanting to burn the guy’s (or woman’s) life down to the ground to try to get justice for the reporting party before actual investigation is done is also traumatizing and horrible.
      I think it’s going to be hard for us to get to a point where we take the people reporting these things seriously and treat them with empathy, but where we also don’t swing the other way by scorching the earth of any and all accused before we find out what there is to know. It doesn’t help people who are telling the truth about the crimes against them and there’s no way to undo that damage. I hope one day we get there, where honest claimants don’t have anything to fear in how they’ll be treated, but neither will the accused, before what actually happened comes to light. Until we get both sides of that process figured out, I don’t think we’ll really have a shot of the justice system working.
      Of course, that’d be an outlier itself. But there’s a first time for everything.

    • @GankWater
      @GankWater 4 роки тому +17

      @@SunflowerSpotlight I think most people have a lot of suspicion and questions because a lot of these allegations first and foremost arent even crimes, its considered social misconduct. Secondly theres usually little if ANY evidence and that turns a lot of these situations into one persons word versus another. If a woman walks into the police stations battered and bruised and says her husband beat her, I dont think they have level of scrutiny because its pretty obvious something is going on. Also, looking at a lot of these high profile cases where there is not even a crime and its 'such and such high profile person made me feel uncomfortable' its totally outside the legal system, and now youve entered the court of public opinion. The problem with the court of public opinion? People have a lot to say, and they will come forward with ridiculous questions, allegations against the accuser, conspiracy theories, calling for the head of the accused, etc. Theres a reason we're a republic and not a direct democracy, most people have a mild mental illness and are unable to apply the level of nuanced thinking required.
      Personally I consider the fact that most people have horrifically bad memory when it comes down to it. Cases that are 10-20 years old or older, I sincerely think the accuser AND the accused probably have memories that are totally altered by time and their ego having to rationalize their behavior; or change the memories trying to reconcile incongruities with their actions and their moral perspective.
      The only person here that had potential for a case was the woman that accused him of rape, the other accusations were merely the media trying to apply hyperbole so they could write "Multiple women come forward" when mentioning his name. We have to be adults going into the future, life is complicated and riddled with the necessity for nuance, misunderstandings are literally the foundation for most of the fiction we adore, and we are not exempt from these misunderstandings in real life. I think communication is a powerful tool, and if someone is making you feel uncomfortable, ANYONE should feel empowered to voice their opinion. Does anyone sincerely think this is the man that will fire you or blow off someone voicing their feelings about his actions? I doubt it. In our society, if we cant recognize the difference between a real crime, and two adults having a misunderstanding that can be remedied through civil discourse pretty immediately, then we will never get out of the mire the media wants us to wade in. Remember, we are cogs in the machine for ad revenue, they love nothing more than us not being able to spot the hyperbole, and maintain the critical thinking skills required of us as an informed public.

My guess is that either the women wanted attention, or wanted to mess with his career bc he was getting so popular. But I'm pretty sure mostly anywhere where life is possible, we'll only find microbes. Earth is so perfect that finding a planet just like ours is stupidly hard, complex life is too delicate to form on most worlds. Even if complex life does forms, most of it wouldn't be as intelligent as humans, intelligence is hard to gain and depends on the environment around the et species. For example, we humans became smart because of lack of trees in major parts of Africa, we became intelligent to protect ourselves from predators and invent tools to help us hunt, especially in the far north. Most animals just don't need intelligence to survive and most aliens wouldn't be any different. I'd say we should be the aliens for them, we should go to their planet, even if there's an intelligent species there's a very low chance it'll be more intelligent than us, we can share our knowledge for the better future of both the civilizations. We can be Gods for them.

    The broader tragedy is seeing the MeToo movement misused, treating minor actions on par with genuine abuse toward women. Completely undermines the importance of the issue. It seems likely some women are offered big bucks to report a public figure with an exaggerated story, by certain parties who want to destroy that individual (like Al Franken, and this time a celebrated scientist). I despise this behavior, and I hope leaders in the movement eventually draw a clear picture between serious sexual harassment and minor schoolboy idiocy.
