I recently purchased the Speed, my friend recently a SDuke, and it reflects both our riding styles - both quick riders, aggressive on throttle with punchy exits, him a little more rogue, myself a more smooth IMO. The KTM is the devil, the Triumph a God.
KTM is like android, everyone has its cheap models like duke 125, 200, 390 and they are shouting that KTM is better then Triumph , Ducati, Japanese bikes , :))) people should not get under influence, Triumph is the winner here, very good review, thank you!
I prefer high performance riding on off-road trails in the Colorado desert. Thankfully I was able to recover from my addiction to high performance sport bikes and cars. My favorite bike is a 2018 KTM 350 EXC-F dual sport. With no police and radar guns within miles of my off-road riding terrain, the 350 will go as fast as I feel safe, and both climb and descend the craziest and technical hills imaginable. In terms of the 2 bikes mentioned in the video, the Triumph is stunning to look at and probably performs fast enough for even expert riders. My choice would be the KTM 1290, for all of the design and build quality only KTM can provide. My first modification would be to swap the headlight immediately for something that matches the beauty and design of the rest of the bike. Great video my friend, thank you for taking the time to film and produce this naked bike comparison!
Will like to see how the aftermarket receives the new triumph. Despite all the improvements, there was still a price point consideration. I really do appreciate what Triumph is giving you for your 15K
Just traded my 2020 KTM for the Triple. Well actually the dealer bought back my Duke after it spent 4 of it's first 12 months of ownership with mystery oil leaks, transmission issues and engine problems. I loved the KTM when it ran, but it proved to be an unreliable piece of junk. The Triumph is just as fun - it's power delivery is different but better in some circumstances (much easier in traffic for instance), and no question the Speed handles significantly better than the KTM. Doesn't matter to me anyway, as the KTM was such a bad ownership experience that I'll never buy one again.
Triples and V2’s are the best. I own my second 2018 Super Duke and a MV Augusta Dragster 800rr Pirelli edition. The SD all that power and torque all below 9500. The Triple is very unique. Almost like a V4 with torque and high rpm horsepower but with a little more character.
I had one KTM SMC R from factory, brand new, and it was dripping oil all the time. I sold it and I bought a new KTM Duke 890 R. The same thing. Dripping oil all the time. The Triumph is a well made motorbike, elegant and it looks like made with really good quality materials. KTM looks more plastic. And don't forget it, dripping oil all the time.
@@tombraathen531 I'm talking about my ones, the ones which I'm talking about. Obviously I'm not talking about your one. I don't know you and your motorbike either. Probably you are a KTM fan and you felt offended about my comment. But was a reality, not an intention to offend anyone.
I am looking for a naked that means business on track and can also do some road riding (July and August when it's too hot for trackdays). Which one is it? Tuono, SDR or Speed Triple?
I've heard the Gen 3 KTM has seen some major refinement over my 2018. I found my SD to be very satisfying . . . when it was not in the shop. I finally sold it after a substantial loss with so much frustration over the lack of resolution of a nagging issue. I went with a less expensive bike (MT-10) because my budget had just taken a major hit, I just wanted out of the KTM realm and not further deal with the company through our USA lemon law. Therefore the Speed Triple would be the one I would most consider after really liking my Yamaha. The MT-10 was even more comfortable than my Duke with the 10 having a lower seat (I've a 30"/76 cm inseam) and what felt like a lower center of gravity. My gen 2 Duke also got increasing buzzy with revs while the Yamaha was a fun, smooth ride to the top. This is another reason I'd look at the Speed Triple because I do enjoy running up the rev range. I'm at the gas station every 90 miles with the Yam, more or less and I can say that's annoying whereas the Duke got around 40 mpg to my current 26-29 mpg. The RS wouldn't be judged by poor gas mileage because, yeah . . . one is buying a superbike. But for those considering the Duke, that is a nice bonus, especially with the relatively small tank on the Speed Triple. Boy it annoyed me how the Duke's instrument readout was changing to night mode on & off with little provocation and then taking some time to restore itself to the daylight setting. That's just me tooling around rather than on it and paying primary attention to the road. I heard that's improved some on the Gen 3. I do appreciate that Triumph just gives you the full measure of technology at its price point now that it has dropped the standard model while it irks me the way KTM locks up features unless one puts more earnings on the dealer's table. Lastly I'd say the KTM was quality just about everywhere I would look. However my visits to the Triumph showroom left me very impressed with that manufacturer's machinery.
You must try it. I had the KTM gen2, very powerful but the suspensions and chassis was not the same. Superduke is a best disorderly that could be very fun, the Speed is great scalpel. The only problem in the speed is the metzeler racetech. With these tires the suspensions work a little hard, that issue changes with s21, contisport or contirace, I haven't been able to try anothers
Quarter Mile times? 0-60? Braking distance? Lap times? Pretty much any keyboard ninja can splice together clips of these bikes on the road and track. Give us REAL numbers. These bikes are both at the top of the food chain and deserve a proper scientific and competitive numbers review. I love you guys. Just please don't sell us short on these two bikes in the review. Part Two of this test is coming, right?
I haven't tried any of the two, but I know by experience I would easily love that Triumph. I would need a proper test ride of the Duke before I made up my mind about it, because I just don't know that brand well enough. They make cool bikes for sure, no questions asked, I personally just need to get a better feel for them first. Reliability and quality are two aspects I would need more confidence in with the Duke.
I own a 21 1290 SUPERDUKE R Full blown HOOLIGAN bike its Nast an wheelies constantly as well as takes the twistys beautifully!!!! ABSOLUTE TORQUE MONSTER!!!! THAT MAKES YOU SMILE AN LAUGH THE WHOLE RIDE!!!🍻🤙🏼
I've got myself a SD GT instead of R a few days ago and I've clocked in a bit over a 1000 miles😋 and funny thing is how fast I've got use to this acceleration. At first it was Wow and now it's OK😁 still liking it but wouldn't mind a bit more😉 the only downside I found is a vibration level. No getting away from that. Depending on a rev range it's either through pegs, seat or a handlebar. What surprised me was a fuel economy up to 55mpg with normal (ish) riding. For me it's the one and only my slightly mental KTM😍
I absolutely love my Monster 1200S on road and track. Would like to see that in a head to head test with these. I like the performance stats of the Triumph and KTM, not so the looks. Can someone convince me to change?
THE KTM is a rough neck, the Triumph is smooth as silk. It boils down to as you so eloquently put it “Personal preference.” That said, I own the the Speedy and I freaking love it.
Same. I cant think of anything more boring that trying to wrangle a rough neck around. It might be fun for 3 minutes but after that 3 minutes it would get boring really really fast.
Like the new SpeedTriple. I bought one of the first 1050 SpeedTriple, ordered in 2004 blind and I was riding it 70tkm in 10 years. This year it was choice between SpeedTriple 2021 and SDR 2021. Decision was not about the engine. I bought the SDR because of: 1) already owned a Speedy for 10 years 2) the rear of the SDR is much nicer design for me, on the Speedy its too low (...at the end the overall design i liked more) 3) SDR is more agile in shorter corners 4) torque in low rev
I had the opportunity to ride the Speed Triple 1200 RS for a few km as it is available for a test ride in a nearby Triumph showroom. After just a few km ride - all I could say was - WHOAAAAAAAAA!! It is surprisingly nimble for a 1200 cc bike, it is even more surprisingly comfortable for the tough Indian road conditions for a sports naked bike (how the hell did they manage to make it taut handling and still comfortable at the same time!!). This bike absolutely hates to go slow - in the typical cluttered Indian city traffic, it sputters a bit and can at times overheat also but the moment you open up the throttle, it just goes BAAAAAMMMMM! It wants to wheelie all the time (and guys, just forget the so called riding modes - keeping it in the SPORT or whichever is the best aggressive mode truly brings out the character of that bike). When buying an expensive bike, it is also important to think about the dealer stability and spare supply etc - and Triumph being a relatively smaller global brand has done quite a good job in India on that front. If one does have the budget for this kind of a bike, then it's almost a no brainer! Unfortunately, KTM in India has still stuck to its portfolio of 125/200/250/390...They are not bringing out Duke 890 and 1290 variants. So we in India have been deprived of any test rides of these mental machines. If Duke 390 or few examples of 790 sold are any indication, then 1290 will be an absolute mad thing IF they are able to do assembly in India at least and keep the pricing a bit below Triumph, I think Duke has its own fan following and Duke 1290 may become the arch rival of Speed Triple here!
I wanted a Triumph Speed Triple, but couldn’t see waiting for the 1200 version, and I really liked the styling of the outgoing 2020 Triumph Speed Triple RS 1050. Then I was thinking I really really liked the 2021 KTM Super Duke 1290 R as the front end looked menacing (sorta like the helmet on The Mandalorian). Both bikes are great in their own rights. So in the end, or beginning of April anyways, I bought them both. I will say the Triumph is silky smooth and comfortable to ride; and the KTM feels like it’s given name “The Beast.” So depending on the mood, will determine which bike to ride. Unless I decide to ride my Harley-Davidson or Ducati Panigale V4S Corse (beautiful bike but it kills my body; so it’s more like $30,000+ “Art” that you just admire 😂)
@@p.chakraborty4453 V4 vs I4, you gotta ride them both and decide on your own mate, although the general consensus among my group is that RSV4 is the better bike on and off the track. But then again R1 has such a massive fan following and that engine's soundtrack is killer.
@@bharadghost ya ya , i have rode a I4 before , the thing i love about that is the smoothness , but the V4 has a huge bang , just pulls and pulls like crazy , and the RSV4 soundtrack was the exhaust note of the year , as per as i know , anyways I'll buy em used , so if i get a cheaper R1 , I'll take it , I've currently got my eyes on a 2018 R1M , for 5 lakhs only!! Own a 2021 sdr and it’s brilliant, well built, fast, handles well and above all fun. Triumph is a bit too refined to compete with the KTM for me. Horses for courses
But if you're not a pro biker, you'll look way more ridiculous on the SDR than on the Speed which is really made for road. I've smoked numerous SDR riders with my old CBR 954 RR (2003 !) on tracks and i was really sorry for them... so much money and nearly no way to handle it at 100% if you're not a pro with intense training coz it's an unchained beast hard to ride at full power...where the Speed is a waaaay easier bike made first of all for road (it's a true roadster not a sportbike with no fairings like the S1000R) and way easier to handle and to live with for lambda riders like both of us. I highly prefer being able to use 90% of a speed than 70% of a SDR and from what i see on roads and tracks for years now, most SDR owners look like affraid pussies on their bikes (i can understand, it's a real monster but you still look ridiculous when everyone overrides you with less powerfull bikes...) Most owners aren't good on tracks or roads, only able to open on straight lines because you have to be Rossi to handle 100% of that engine. The Speed is a way more "average rider friendly" and it's nearly as easy as a 765RS so peeps are pushing it harder and look less ridiculous. My 2 cents
KTM 1290 SDR 3.0 is the best naked bike ever. Mine got Austin Racing full exhaust (189 HP), 158 Nm torque, 186 kg. I drove Suzuki B-King (2007), KTM 990 SDR (2010) Ducati Streetfighter (2012), KTM 1290 SDR 1.gen. (2015), 2.gen. (2018). The Best is unbeatable.
If money wasn't a problem Id choose the KTM as I am all about the hooliganess. With that said, the reliability of the KTM will have me scratching my head, possibly making me change my mind, and ending me with choosing the Triumph.
How reliable is the SDR and ktm warranty! I’d love it tested both but unsure with KTM reliability and costing of extras like you need to get like a QS and other bits to just get the spec of the RS

Rode both, love em both but I ended up with the Evo version (2022) of the SD. With that suspension it puts the KTM over the top. If Triumph would give the RS the ability to dial in a softer ride with a semi-active suspension they would have a dominant bike. The Triumph is very well made, I love the understated/classy design but it just could not compare in ride quality or tech....I hope they shore that up because the RS could be incredible and I would pay more for those features. I will say the KTM is more comfortable.
@@JB-bi5vt The suspension can be dialed so far down that a 180lb person would bottom it out. If you don't weigh at least 180lbs, you can swap springs. No brainer!
@@ttrguy9952 I don’t think you understand race track valving and street bike valving. One or the other is always Favored, the triumph is valved more for the track. Meaning it favor smooth fast roads. So I have been told. The Ktm fall a little short when pushed on the track but is still very sporty on the road in sport suspension setting.
Part of the reason why my next bike is almost certain to be the KTM is that I just loooove V twins. KTM is now the ONLY manufacturer of balls out V-twins, which is a huge shame. I know that the Duc v4 is a "twin pulse" (like a tandem V twin), but there really is no substitute for those big slugs, whatever Ducati claim), and I know that Indian make the FTR, but 120 bhp really isn't comparable (apart from the fact that they are having supply problems atm). Of course I'll test ride all the competition that I can, but I think it very unlikely that I'll get anything else.
Believe it or not that FTR holy shit forget the numbers that thing is a blast and I'm a numbers guy more than anybody else you test drive that bike you would be hooked and it looks amazing blows the other bikes out of the water looks wise.
The Duke is not my favorite KTM so I wouldnt choose it, but I do like what it does and Orange is my favorite color. :) I currently own a Triumph and really like the dealer close by so I'd have to choose it over the KTM.

The fun factor of my 1290R is off the charts. I would love to ride one of the new Speed Triples though.
I recently purchased the Speed, my friend recently a SDuke, and it reflects both our riding styles - both quick riders, aggressive on throttle with punchy exits, him a little more rogue, myself a more smooth IMO. The KTM is the devil, the Triumph a God.
The speed triple is no slouch. Look at the dyno chart. It’s easier to live with and a BEAST. Aka refined and better
KTM is like android, everyone has its cheap models like duke 125, 200, 390 and they are shouting that KTM is better then Triumph , Ducati, Japanese bikes , :))) people should not get under influence, Triumph is the winner here, very good review, thank you!
Still don't like the triumph styling. Guys, that headlight has to go!!!
Nahh it ok
100% agree those stick on headlights are disgusting
Yeah I don’t get what triumph is doing to their styling of the front.
But you like the ktm 's?😕
@@threepot5874 Nope. But if I had to pick, I'd go the ktm.
Both stonking. Just comes down to aesthetics for me...Speed triple just appeals more to me a bit more.
I own a speed triple rr for me it’s absolutely a weapon to ride and looks great
I prefer high performance riding on off-road trails in the Colorado desert.
Nice vid. The personality of the KTM wins me over every time. The Triumph just seems a bit dull in comparison, although I'm sure it's not.
same
KTM All day long. The only plus for the Triumph is the awesome 3 cylinder sound
1290 SDR....irrespective of their models KTM makes the funnest bikes out there..😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Will like to see how the aftermarket receives the new triumph.
Crazy I've got a 2021 1290 SDR since June 2021 and it had no issues yet hopefully it stays that way
@@loloflieger8832 Yeah mine was solid until 5000 miles and then came apart like a cheap suit.
Agree, I own a panigale v2 and speed 1050 rs, Love both of them
I had one KTM SMC R from factory, brand new, and it was dripping oil all the time. I sold it and I bought a new KTM Duke 890 R. The same thing. Dripping oil all the time. The Triumph is a well made motorbike, elegant and it looks like made with really good quality materials. KTM looks more plastic. And don't forget it, dripping oil all the time.
My Super Duke has not spilled one drop of oil on my garage floor, so it's maybe a bit of a generalization going on there.
@@tombraathen531 was a reality, not a supposition or something like that. 2/2, brand new. 2019 and 2020.
@@xcrufy543 You said "KTM looks more plastic. And don't forget it, dripping oil all the time.". Its a generalization.
Spend a little extra and get the Speed Triple... it is the DRIVER'S bike.
Triumph triple whistle sound is 🎶 on ear
Nothing like a triumph. Best quality all over best feeling and power...

SUGGESTION....WHILE DOING HEAD TO HEAD VIDEOS, PLEASE MAKE THEM APPEAR ON THE SCREEN TOGETHER WITH TWO EXPERT RIDERS..
Triumph got my money love the speedy
Thank you for bringing up reliability. Moto pubs dependent on advertising aren't going to, they can't.
I like the KTM....I have a Street Glide.....It's 1700 cc 103 cubes...Slow as Hell but Cool as Hell...Sounds Great
The new 1200RS ST bug eyes look like they are angry and "Ready to Race" that KTM now...luv it.
Which one would you go around NZ on after commuting on for 6 months
Cod and Haddock are my favorites!
which one will be still running like a dream in ten years time?
Quarter Mile times? 0-60? Braking distance? Lap times?
Pretty much any keyboard ninja can splice together clips of these bikes on the road and track.
Give us REAL numbers. These bikes are both at the top of the food chain and deserve a proper scientific and competitive numbers review.
I love you guys. Just please don't sell us short on these two bikes in the review.
Part Two of this test is coming, right?
I agree, this was a lazy filler piece and achieved nothing. Shame on you Visordown!
Triumph .
Great 👍video Visor Down.
Glad you liked it!
If you talk reliability you need to go Japanese.
I own a 21 1290 SUPERDUKE R
Full blown HOOLIGAN bike its Nast an wheelies constantly as well as takes the twistys beautifully!!!! ABSOLUTE TORQUE MONSTER!!!! THAT MAKES YOU SMILE AN LAUGH THE WHOLE RIDE!!!🍻🤙🏼
So when do we get a comparison between the ktm, triumph, tuono, v4r??
I love the new Triple but Orange Power for me!
THE KTM is a rough neck, the Triumph is smooth as silk. It boils down to as you so eloquently put it “Personal preference.” That said, I own the the Speedy and I freaking love it.
Same. I cant think of anything more boring that trying to wrangle a rough neck around. It might be fun for 3 minutes but after that 3 minutes it would get boring really really fast.
love to see the new ZH2 2021 against the speed triple 1200 rs dying to see a duel of those 2
The zh2 is the only "naked bike" i dont want in a naked test.
Why?
Its not a fun light wheelie hooligan bike what is what the naked bike is all about.
I own the rs 1050 and think will switch to the SDR next year...
accounting for the legendary british bias, the ktm must have done exceptionally well
I had the opportunity to ride the Speed Triple 1200 RS for a few km as it is available for a test ride in a nearby Triumph showroom.
If Duke 390 or few examples of 790 sold are any indication, then 1290 will be an absolute mad thing
IF they are able to do assembly in India at least and keep the pricing a bit below Triumph, I think Duke has its own fan following and Duke 1290 may become the arch rival of Speed Triple here!
A Naked bike should be purpose built to Seek and Destroy!
Great comparison. Fair and honest comments
My head picks the Speed Triple as it may prove more reliable and easier to live with. My heart would pick the Super Duke as it’s just bonkers 😛
Fair enough!

Triple vs Twin, the most awaited showdown. Both brutally aggressive personality.
My 2005 Speed Triple is still a bulldog. I may never part with it. But in 2021 I'm choosing the KTM. It's unapologetically bonkers and I love that.
Super Duke all day every day!
My 2 cents
@@Barabassx but I like orange
@@Barabassx you wouldn’t go past me 😉 ps the 1290 isn’t even that fast or difficult to use, you must know a lot of slow riders
KTM 1290 SDR 3.0 is the best naked bike ever. Mine got Austin Racing full exhaust (189 HP), 158 Nm torque, 186 kg. I drove Suzuki B-King (2007), KTM 990 SDR (2010) Ducati Streetfighter (2012), KTM 1290 SDR 1.gen. (2015), 2.gen. (2018). The Best is unbeatable.
Don't you have to pay a membership on KTM to use features that are standard on every other bike? Cause that really sucks.
If money wasn't a problem Id choose the KTM as I am all about the hooliganess. With that said, the reliability of the KTM will have me scratching my head, possibly making me change my mind, and ending me with choosing the Triumph.

KTM for hoonin, biggest grin attainment!
Both bikes are incredible machines
They are indeed!
"front end of loveliness......" @ 6:08....sounds like a tinder date Toad....lol
Rode both, love em both but I ended up with the Evo version (2022) of the SD. With that suspension it puts the KTM over the top. If Triumph would give the RS the ability to dial in a softer ride with a semi-active suspension they would have a dominant bike. The Triumph is very well made, I love the understated/classy design but it just could not compare in ride quality or tech....I hope they shore that up because the RS could be incredible and I would pay more for those features. I will say the KTM is more comfortable.
Especially where I live the roads are beat to crap potholes everywhere your body would get beat up and hurt with the hard suspension.
Most of the reviews I've seen have said the Triumphs suspension is a little to stiff for the road.
It's ADJUSTABLE....DUH!!!
@@ttrguy9952 even taking account of the adjustability, it is still hard

It feels much cheaper than the old Speed RS
At that level of power you might as well go for the sledgehammer 😂

stop changing the volume and get rid of the crappy music
I am picking the Aprilia (while not being irrelevant in the process...) I admit it may be a matter of subjective preference, because all three bikes are superb in equal measure.
How about doing a head to head of the new S1000R Vs the best of the current Nakeds?
Head to head, but not back to back.
