I tested both bikes last year and bought the Ktm . The Ducati is a lovely bike but what most reviews don't mention is its appalling fuel range ,which when ridden hard gave 67 miles from a full tank ( ktm 110 miles ). Suspension wise the Ducati just edges it but engine wise on the road it needs thrashing before it really takes off ,whereas the ktm is flying at 6000 rpm .Also the Street fighter is silly money for a performance exhaust , which it needs as it sounds like a bag of spanners standard ,and the plastic wings on a 20 grand bike , come on Ducati !

Here’s my question, because of the price difference, the KTM in the States is about $18,500 and the Streetfighter V4S is about $24,000... would a more fair, dollar for dollar comparison be the standard Streetfighter that runs just under $20,000 and doesn’t have the semi-automatic Ohlns suspension? Perhaps the KTM might beat out the Ducati in that more equivalent comparison?

    • @chrisvantassel8867

This is an older vid before the Evo came out for the KTM. Now apples to apples since the EVO has the semi-auto suspension that would be a more reasonable comp. That being said, the Evo is $19,500 so still much cheaper than the V4S with better tech and more features which is why I bought the EVO. I personally thought it was a better bike anyway.

I’m surprised you didn’t bring up cruise control or heated grips on the KTM. As a road bike that costs over 20 grand, it is pretty inexcusable the Ducati doesn’t offer either. You also missed the in dash navigation the the KTM offers. Again for a 20 grand bike, these are the features that buyers are looking for in a road bike. The fact that you cant get them on the Ducati (apart from heated grips which is a $500 extra when dealer installs) is inexcusable for the price they charge.

Having owned various Ducati's and KTM's over the years I was interested to watch this comparison video, and I know it's only based upon one persons perspective. Some things worth mentioning while watching: -
    1. The Ducati screen flicked from day/night way more than the KTM's throughout the video, even before it was mentioned it was annoying me as it was changing constantly.
    2. I agree that having to pay to get the Q/S to work on the KTM is a cheeky move, but it is £3.5k cheaper than the Ducati
    3. Both are super naked's but one is nearly a third of the price more than the other, so you would expect better finish/components.
    4. I've not ridden the Streetfighter so I cannot agree/disagree but I have heard from people that have, have said the Streetfighters engine is amazing but you have to rev it to utilise that power which isn't the point of a road bike.
Keep up the good work, there's a 1290RR looming which should be similar ££ to the SFV4S so that would be a good comparison on a better level.

Hell, I felt guilty buying the SDR considering it's one of the most expensive bikes in this class from a major manufacturer. Don't regret it at all though. If money weren't an issue I may have gone with the Duc, but there's just something about the SDR that spoke to me.

The V4S is actually a bit boring by comparison... I say that because it's simply easier to ride while I can barely keep the front tire of my KTM on the ground.
If I had to buy a new bike today, and could only have one, I'd pick the KTM... crazy fun and almost half the price.

    • @mrkang4080
      @mrkang4080 3 роки тому +2

@@Motorcycle_Mike I think reliability issues on both bikes stem from old stories and old bikes... Duc and KTM, much like Volkswagen, are brands that seem to continue to suffer from reliability issues from decades ago... I think they are unfounded.
As for the bikes, my SDR is heavily, heavily, modified (carbon fiber bodywork, BST wheels, full akra with a power commander tune, etc.) -- the tune really helped with fuel consumption. With the money you save on the KTM, I'd highly recommend a full exhaust and custom tuning. Really brought the bike to life IMO.
The V4S is kinda boring by comparison... don't get me wrong, it's AMAZING, but the KTM is terrifying at all RPMs while the Duc needs to be wound up a bit. The suspension and fit/finish of the SFV4S is like no other bike on the market, and worth every penny if you can afford it. Fuel consumption seems to be an issue on this bike for most people, but I haven't noticed... then again, I just got it so I don't have enough saddle time to notice it yet.
You can't go wrong with either bike, the KTM is actually really good at slow speeds and around town (as is the Duc). The KTM can wheelie all day at any speed, while the Duc feels better during spirited rides and in the twisties (the full Ohlins setup is great on the street and track). Both are pretty comfy (I'm 6'4" / 193cm ~ 220lbs/100kg)... so I think the decision should really come down to budget...
My problem now is that they just announced the Super Duke RR... lol

As such a nice bike the Ducati is, the engine note just sets my teeth on edge. As an overall package, agreed, the better bike.
KTM for me based on the simple fact, I like it and as you have said Andy, its all down to what makes you want from a bike.

Think both are equally good choices if you want a great hyper naked, though IMO the V4 looks the best (love how they managed to integrate the headlight's curve into the tank, none of that 'tacked on bits and bobs'-feeling some bikes suffer from). Though I guess we'll have to wait for the MV Dragster to release so you can have the ultimate naked hyper hooligan shootout (might need a s1000rr in the mix as well, get cracking ;3).

In my mind, this is the rawest/purest of them, and it has the largest range/fuel tank. Smoothness and electronics are for the more sensitive, newage riders. Feelings should relate to suspension and tyres, not gender and equality. That's just me though.

I just traded my ktm for a ducati because I had electrical problems the entire time I owned it. The dealer just kept telling me the computer said nothing was wrong. Also at 1500 miles the belt started squeaking so loud under acceleration that I could hear it over the engine noise, the wind noise, and under my helmet. So far the Ducati has been perfect. I got my 1290 SAS a year and a half ago at a discount - $16,500 - but the Ducati was $26,600. I don't know if you would say that's worth it or not but I'm a lot happier having a bike that actually works

Great comparison video, thank you. I think it would also be good to have a section comparing both purchase cost and running costs (the latter you would have to estimate if you won't have the bike for very long). If two bikes are very similar in their abilities and are trading blows in various categories, if one bike would cost you £4k more and you had to service it much more frequently, I think that would inevitably be the deciding factor for many of us. I probably wouldn't mention MPG as we don't purchase these bikes for their economy. However if there was a massive difference in MPG then it's probably worth mentioning that too.

working at a KTM & Ducati dealership I see things from a slightly different perspective. There are more far KTM's coming in with faults than Ducati's, in fact I cant remember the last time that we had any of the V4's in with faults. The Superdukes suffer from water ingress into that TFT dash and also the switchgear, also the gearboxes have had a few isolated faults ( circlip coming adrift and wrecking the gearbox, there's a video of this on YT) You had better be on the ball keeping those superdukes clean and well lubed as the exhaust valves can rot really bad and sieze. Don't think that I am biased as I currently own a 1290SD.

For the last twenty years, I’ve been obsessed about finding out as much as possible before buying. But, and I have no idea if my experience is representative, for me the quality of the dealership has driven my choice as much as the bike itself. To this end, before they all disappear and we buy everything on-line, it may be interesting to “review” dealerships: what attracts, what repels, what enables and impedes sales and customer loyalty?

Ducati will probably sell better ‘coz its known brand that makes a statement even to non-bikers, while lower profile KTM may appeal only to the cognoscenti.
