    The 454 Casull was like a grand finale!

    That 454 has a lot of energy for dangerous game. Good to have it and not need it. An easy way to see the cylinder rotation is to look at the locking notches. Which ever side the releaf cut is on, points in the direction of rotation.

      A 1/4 ounce slug weighs 109 grains. This is why it has less recoil than the 454. It also has less muzzle energy. I would probably hand load 45 Colt using the Ruger and Thompson Center data. 200 grain JHP at 1500fps.

      I'd vote for a 460 S&W Judge. Pretty sure it would be close in energy out of 6" barrel. I do like 45-70 though. Would love to get a Ladies Home Companion revolver.

    • @rjoetting7594
      @rjoetting7594 2 роки тому

      @@scoyounger the 454 casull and 460 s&w operates at the same maximum pressure, making me wonder if it's able to chamber?
      If so I would think it would be safe to fire, but someone would have to contact Taurus to be sure.
      I'm guessing that in a short barrel that the increase in powder would be inefficient and there is no benefit for the longer cartridge
      The 45-70 could fire larger diameter bullets
      458/459 and much heavier so penetration would be awesome. (I think)

    • @scoyounger
      @scoyounger 2 роки тому

      @@rjoetting7594 I've wondered that too. I'm guessing 460 uses slower burning powder. To get 400fps from a 360gr bullet with the same max pressure. I'm pretty sure Taurus, or anyone that reloads, would say don't try it. Guns chambered in 45LC have a lip that doesn't allow longer stuff, like 454 and 460 to chamber, but my older judge will chamber 454. Maybe I shot out the lip. I don't have any 460 rounds to try in my Raging Judge. I don't think it's worth the risk of a kaboom, but I'd like to see if it fits in the cylinder.

    That Casull is hot! It would sure put the smack on a deer at crossbow range, further if you can hit with it. The slug is about like a hot 110 grain 357 mag, just not as well constructed of projectile. Still should work on a deer at handgun range.

      Yes I used to have a raging Hunter I think it was 454 casull from Taurus and I didn't like the way it snapped so so much but it was a different setup on it it wasn't as heavy as the raging judge is that's that's the difference is the weight on the balance cuz you know why you understand the snap of of the 454 is so much stronger in a lighter setup than it is in a raging judge. That's what I've been trying to get all these years I just haven't had the money and at the right time I was spending on something else when I wanted to read you wasn't available. Conservation judges so much heavier can have it wouldn't be such a snap before I handled 44 Magnums you know that's not the problem and things like that it's not problem right now hunting with a 10 mm I love it I just love it you know I'm taking quite a few deer with the 10 mm and used to hunt with the 45 Long cold but it didn't have very much range on it so I will with the with the 10 mm and I love it to death I just love it. You have a wonderful evening and this is I'm dedicated to you guys you just wonderful I love your show I love watching you.. 💞😇🇺🇸

    The .454 and the slug were in the same neighborhood on velocity, but if you do the math a quarter ounce slug weighs just over 109 grains, so the .454 is pushing over twice the weight projectile and just very slightly faster. No wonder is makes a better explosion in the melons.

    Don't shoot multi projectile rounds through rifled barrel. Only smoothbore can keep them accurate. Rifling applies rotation to the projectile to keep it's accuracy thanks to gyroscopic motion as it travels down range. It only works with single projectile accelerated along the bore axis. That's why your slug hit dead center. Off-center sub-caliber projectiles, like birdshot or buckshot do not get the rotation applied to individual pellets (that would keep them accurate), but instead rotate as a group around the bore axis. This means every pellet has got non-zero velocity in the direction perpendicular to the bore axis. In effect the shot group disperses as soon as it leaves the barrel and you get an odd ring pattern, where the shot covers quite densely a circular area around the point of aim, but with an empty spot in the center. That's why your buckshot was getting wild.

    The 454 Casull made a great explosion, but it traveled about the same as the .410 slug. I'm thinking the slug has pretty much the same punch, and if you used 5 different watermelons, 10 total, you would get similar explosions from each round. .410's are cheaper, so I'll stay with the slugs.

    Isn't the 45LC pretty anemic because it started out as a black powder cartridge? Kind of like 38 special? You could theoretically have a whole lot more powder in the case but since it was formalized for black powder pressures you can't overpressure it because chambers only have to be rated for the low pressure? At least that's what I've read.

      you can get good brass that can handle hot loads. you would have to check but I think starling brass 45 long colt can handle 44 mag pressures. They have load date set up for rugers, contender and freedom arms only because they can handle it.

      @@joeg4972 it’s not the brass, apparently. From what I was told basically the chamber has a minimum safe-pressure requirement to be stamped “45 lc” or whatever. So sure you could make the gun more sturdy for hotter loads but those loads can’t be marketed as 45lc because they’re too hot for the minimum required strength. I’m having trouble explaining it well. I mean no insult or offense, and this may be just a matter of semantics, but, the .45 Colt is not and never was the .45 Long Colt, simply because there was never a .45 Short Colt.
    Many people are confused about this, but, it is simply the .45 Colt. I was developed in the 1870's as a black powder cartridge for the 1873 Colt SSA revolver and the 1873 Winchester rifle, which were both originally chambered for the .44 WCF(also known as the 44-40 Winchester).
    To this day, the .45 COLT remains a low pressure factory loading, because, so many guns chambered for the .45 Colt were made with weaker steel alloys than we have today.
    If hand loaded for a strong modern gun such as, but not limited to, the Super Red Hawk, or the Super Black Hawk, it can be safely loaded to a much higher pressure level approaching the level of the .44 Remington Magnum. Extreme Caution is advised if you own an older weaker gun, because it might explode VIOLENTLY, like a grenade, in your hand, with possibly deadly results(to you and anyone around you) if you use hotter than standard factory loaded ammo!
    If you are not a hand loader, there are also some boutique ammo makers that offer "hotter" than standard factory loads, made for strong modern guns, for Self Defense and or Hunting purposes.

    .410 buck out of a 3 inch rifled barrel, can't expect much.

    I want one so badly (the 6.5" barrel) but just found out they were discontinued by Taurus. Do you know any retailers that still sell these, even used?

    I never saw a tall brass .410 shell like that. I can`t imagine the cost of brass alone.

    Very impressive stuff! Have you ever had the chance to try the Lehigh Defense Maximum Expansion bullets in 45 Colt? Those things are absolutely wicked!

    The .45 Colt looked like a Cowboy Load. Carbon and Buffalo Bore load hotter .45s.
    My RBMagnum had an 8 3/8 " barrel. Yeah...they'll take deer! Haha.

    Excellent video. I wasn't expected the recoil to be that minimal on the 454 Casull. That's a pretty big pistol though !
