Thanks, Roy! Don't tell anyone but our local market keeps a Judge under the counter, just in case of large rats and stuff. I believe they load is with two .410 rounds and 3 .45 Colt.
That’s my “tractor” load too. Handy! Roy
nothin wrong with that... "rats" can cause major damage.
Large rats🤣
R.O.U.S.’s are no joke
Large rats 😂
I love seeing more vids of demonstrations of people who dont take themselves so damn serious. It makes it more interesting and friendly to watch. Hate the tactical pole soy boys. Thanks for the awesome review sir!!!
William, thanks for your very kind words. I too tire of the incessant streams of “tacti-coolness” seeming to invade everything these days. Can’t we all just relax and have some fun with all this? Roy
Agreed! Homemade but semi-professional. Need more like this (guy).
Federal HANDGUN buckshot makes it the best home defense handgun option. Four deadly wounds per trigger pull that's accurate beyond home ranges. It's essentially a firing squad of hot .32 auto rounds. 16 inches in gel.
Where can I buy federal HANDGUN buckshot?
@@manilikefirearms7499 The same place where you research firearms before you review them. It's called the internet.
@@bmx7596 I can't find any in stock anywhere. :^(
@@manilikefirearms7499 Good stuff is oftentimes hard to find, especially now. You didn't even know what it was until I informed you though.
@@bmx7596 I just feel like you cant advocate for ammo for a handgun that you cannot buy.
I found mine to be most accurate with the 45 Colt 200 grain cowboy loads from Aguila.
I know what you mean. Mine loves Black Hills cowboy loads. And heck, a 250 flat nose lead bullet at 750 fps is fine! Roy
Good test especially for people who aren’t familiar with this great handgun. I love mine
Guns and American Handgunner magazines are terrific publications! I am a subscriber to both print pubs. This guy did a very good review of the judge!
My public defender always responded well to the .410 PDX-1.
My judge has a 6" barrel and the Hornady 410 shells work well in it. It has a slug and 2 00 buckshot pellets in it. People talk about the judge but I know they wouldn't want to get hit with one lol
2 years have passed and i still think this very unique revolver is amazing!
Thanks Warren. And I still use mine! Roy
Enjoyed your video. Simple, informative and to the point.
Great video, I have three judges and they all shoot great. To those who don't like them, don't buy one. I don't like Cadillac, I don't complain about them I just don't buy them. There is no difference between carrying a taurus judge loaded with 45 long colt vs carrying a smith mod 25 45 long colt. The 3 an 1/2" full size judge is the same size and weight roughly as the 4 inch model 25. They both have swing out cylinders and both can use speed loaders. The 45 long colt has been around since 1873 and it spawned the 45 acp so you can't say it's a weak round for defense. I think you did a great job with this video and I really enjoyed it. Thanks. PS. I carry a 3 1/2 full size judge on my right hip, a 2 inch steel frame public defender in my right back pocket and the poly defender on my left ankle. I use 5 star speed loaders for 45 long colt rounds and speed strips for 410 buckshot. I only use 410 rounds designed for the judge when carrying for defense. Remember 1 is none, 2 is one and 3 is a happy meal. The fastest reload is another loaded gun. And I have never seen or heard of a stop watch being found in a gun fight. Life is too short to be serious all the time, have some fun.
Agreed about the whiners. I don't know why they insist on doing that. Just smile and move on and let other people enjoy it. Roy
I can’t get over the first shot you took. I like that one..the grouping is awesome.
Thanks Truth. It's honestly just about trigger control. Smooth and consistent does the trick! Roy
Thank you! Just the information I needed to know!
My pleasure GTO. Glad to help. Roy
Hey Roy, now cover the S&W Governor. I had one, used it for varmint/predator eradication while mowing. The differences: Taurus is 5-shot, able to load the .410 and .45 Colt calibers. The Governor, is 6-shot, able to load the .410, .45 Colt and with moon clips, .45ACP and the model I had came standard with a night sight on the front sight.
Why I traded it and how much I regret that is a totally different story...
Keep up the good work! Love reading the FMG products.
Good idea. I’ll try to find one. Someone mentioned the moon clip idea and I’m going to look at my Judge to see if I can machine it to accept clips. I’ll keep everyone posted. Appreciate your kind comments! Roy
I switched my front sight out on my Taurus to a large round tritium sight. It glows in the dark. Easy to see white ring in daylight.
I like how you keep your pistol pointed in a safe direction at all times. You are a finely disciplined shooter. Your pistol groups those shot shells well. I had one and it was janky with the pattern, so I traded it for something else.
Thanks sir, for your kind words. Safety is certainly first! I’ve found the shot pattern really depends on the load not the gun. Roy
Nice presentation , never really thought about buying one of these until now, Thanks
Do you recall the “Snake Charmer” made by, I think H&R, quite a while ago? A shorty, single shot .410 with a short stock with a thumbhole as I recall. At first, I thought, “Well, that’s stupid.” Then I talked to lots of motorhome camper types who loved them. Not really gun people, just families who wanted a bit of protection from snakes and such while camping. This is kinda’ like that. Not the best at anything, but pretty good for a lot of general “stuff.” Roy H.
Nice video. Very informative. I had no idea that bullets were so different.
Well, now you know! Dig a bit deeper if you're interested to learn more. It's always interesting to see what's out there and learn more. Roy H.
That was a really good demo & I've always loved my Judges, going all the way back to the very first one ever offered; my favorite (self-defense) loads are Winchester PDX, which has 3 plated discs & 12 or 13 copper BB's & traditional .410 buckshot😀🇺🇸
I love the judge, use shells and it turns from the judge to the judge dredd
I think this is brilliant for something like preventing carjacking. Excellent to have
Great video, entertaining and informative! I just wish those guns would take moon clips for .45acp!
Hey Rob, I don’t see why a ‘smith couldn’t machine that to work. I may need to try that with mine. I hadn’t even thought of that! I have some clips, a mill and just enough knowledge to be scary. I’ll report back with an article in Handgunner later. Roy H.
The SW Governor take moon clips plus like dude said in another comment, ya can modify the cylinder to take moon clips. Also with these guns you can buy sleeves to shoot ,22,38,9mm and many more. 🤗
Excellent review. Thank you sir!
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please.
A true real world application for this weapon system. I APPRECIATE YOUR VLOG, SPOT ON FOR THE FARMER OR OUTDOORSMAN.
Glad to help, Shawn, and thanks for your kind words. Roy
Nice thanks Roy.
Whenever I see your name on anything, Roy, I either watch it (preferred) or read it. Never been disappointed. Having recently murdered two porkypines with my Mossberg 12ga I'm thinking a Judge might be an appropriate addition. Loaded question: would you put the Taurus in the same quality category as Colt and Ruger?
David, thanks for your kind comment! As far as quality goes, today’s Taurus is improved over the “olden days” and I’d rank them as being “among the mainstream makers” for quality today. I haven’t had any issues with Taurus guns over the last five or six years of testing them. I especially like their newish .22 auto series. Even a Colt or S&W can glitch but for some reason people seem to “forgive” them, while losing their minds if an Armscor, Taurus, Charter Arms, etc. has any issues. I always just look at the cost, then weigh what compromises there might be and decide if it matters in the real world. Roy H.
I am sold! I’m recoil sensitive but guess just means by more ammo and practice 😊
It may mean you need a round with less recoil.
Great video thanks for sharing mate from New Zealand
You bet, sir! Great to hear from you way down there! Roy
Wow! I’m wanting this now!!
Awesome video was just thinking of purchasing one
Thanks Roy... there are many who are naysayers, but your video only re-enforces why this would make a great carry for rattlesnake defense as well as two legged defense.. just can't argue with the results here in this video.
Thanks Jon, I appreciate your comments. I think many (most?) of the naysayer crowd in any field don’t actually have any real world experience with what they are nay-saying! Roy
Really enjoyed your presentation. I have roll the idea of buying one for awhile.
Gary, they’re really versatile. I especially like the polymer ones as they are light. And surprisingly accurate with .45 Colt loads. Roy H.
@@fmgpubs Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate the info. and might just bite the bullet and get one.
I sure enjoy mine. Thanks for sharing 🇺🇸
I am really tempted to get a 5" Judge. 45 LC for defense or big game and 410 upland loads for small game. A lot of fun in one package.
Agreed. It’s darn versatile. I’ve even tried shooting close skeet but it’s a challenge! Roy
Thanks for the show and tell, enjoyed it.
If I were to pick up anything of this sort it would definitely be Smith’s Governor.
I have one of these that my dad passed down to me. I find it unpleasant to shoot, the recoil is excessive, and it hurts. My problem is likely due to the small grip and not getting a comfortable grip on it with my my large hands. Great video!!!
Hey Dargo. Check out the Taurus website. I’m pretty sure there are grip options. Also check with Hogue. A very tight grip, squeeze hard, will help. Also use light .45 Colt loads and there’s no need for magnum .410 loads in these guns. Thanks for your kind words too! Roy
This should have more views
Great video, I really like the Judge PDP, I’ve been looking for a video to see if anyone carries it for coyote and black bear protection.
I don’t see why not. You’ve got your choice of .45 Colt or some sort of .410 load for the coyotes. A .410 wouldn’t likely kill a coyote fast but it’s certainly drive them away. I’d stick with a heavy .45 Colt load for the black bear though. Roy H.
I thoroughly enjoyed this review 👌🏽
In cases such as that mall shooting, or public place attack defense, should the terrorist be with a vest, wonder how the impact of the buck shot compared to one or two single rounds of the .45 might disorient after inpacting ?
I have the public defender and I love it
They’re such good general purpose guns, able to do just about anything! Roy
I have the gun I only use 410 shotgun shelves in my Taurus judge 45 long coat is too expensive, but I feel very safe and secure with my judge as EDC and HOME protection
Sure better than a rock! Well done. Roy
The judge is a gun a people LOVE to hate. When I went out on the road as a long haul driver, I sed the key lock to keep the gun unable to be fired. Stupid druggy broke in, got the Judge. I lost it forever, but it was not able to be fired without using the key to unblock it. When I told the Sherrif about it, he said if they tried to use it, it would be as effective as a "blue gun". Her was sorry I lost it, but glad I knew how to use the key lock. It never came back to me.
One can only hope he tried to use it, with corresponding bad results for him! Roy
I have the TAURUS JUDGE 45lc/410 revolver the 7 1/2 inch barrel , great shooting gun and real fun to shoot.
Thank you so much.I just bought one❤
Excellent! Roy
That CCI ammo is just about worthless. My dad had 2 rounds of that ammo in his .44 magnum. He used both rounds to kill a rattlesnake. The first shot just got the snakes attention, the second shot just confirmed to the snake where he was getting hit from and started heading in my dads direction. The third shot was full metal jacket .44 magnum. Needless to say the snake stopped dead in his tracks, blowing every part of that snake from every other part of him. The .410 would have done the job in the first place.
Amazing he had that trouble. I’ve shot lots of snakes, field rats, etc. here on my property with .45 Colt CCI shot rounds and as long as you’re within, say, eight or ten feet, they work great. I have noticed it’s easy to miss the target with the main part of the shot stream due to rifling throwing the shot cloud off to one side a bit. You need to shoot at a piece of cardboard or paper to see where your gun throws the charge, then compensate. Roy H.
For tractor/fishing boat duty is really the only merit is see with the judge. For defense from two legged snakes, I don’t think any of the .410 shells have enough velocity to be get the penetration to be viable. I also would only be comfortable firing any of the .410 loads in an around the farm setting. 45lc would be the only thing I’d consider a defensive round in it, and for a weapon of that size and weight 5 shots of 45 doesn’t seem like a deal for me.
I did play with an 856 Taurus the other day, and wish smith still made an equivalent. I’ve taken a couple classes with DB and he has me shooting a 442 instead of toting the Roland special all the time. I shot the class last weekend with the 442, and for regular earth people stuff feel pretty good about it.
I just don’t see an application for something with that size, weight, and capacity unless the Deere is doing the carrying for me. I am sad now that I didn’t snag up a bunch of police trade in wheel guns back when they were cheap. All the guns I put off that were $200 then are a grand now. Thanks for the videos!
Boy, you and me both regarding those old police trade in guns! I think for a “non-gun” person who needs a sort of general duty revolver, something like this makes sense. Camping, travel, home defense, etc. it offers some versatility, especially with shot loads, if someone doesn’t want to train well enough to his with the .45 Colt loads accurately. Roy
Federal handgun buckshot does 16 inches in FBI gel. That's more than alot of .32s and .38s, but you get four projectiles per trigger pull and a 3 inch spread at 21ft. It's basically a firing squad of smaller pistol calibers every pull of the trigger.
@@bmx7596 Yeah the copper solid buck works well and not sure why people are saying there's no penetration when it penetrates plenty.
Not long after the Judge became popular, The Box O Truth did a test showing the lack of velocity & penetration compared to a .410 shotgun. I have actually been surprised at the .45 Colt accuracy possible, given the big bullet jump to engage rifling. I’ll call it a snake & rodent gun, and if I have to use it for defense, it will be with .45 Colt ammo.
Good for two legged snakes and rodents too 😂
Hi Lane. Id’ say with .410 it’d be a compromise at best for defense, but perhaps with #4 shot, for instance, or one of the defensive loads it’d sure be better than tossing rocks. Having said that, I don’t know anyone who’d enjoy being hit in the face or chest with a load of defensive ammo like this and I suspect they’d soon lose interest in chasing you … Roy H.
@@fmgpubs good point about it discouraging an attacker. In a defensive situation, we don’t get to choose our backstop; I’d be a bit concerned about stray projectiles. But up close it would give you multiple hits quickly.
@@bmx7596 thanks, I’ll look at that.
Box of truth didn't review anything worth reviewing. Terrible ammo
Great review, thank you sir.
You bet sir. Mine pretty much lives with me on my tractors. Roy

Thanks Roy.
I'm considering getting either a used taurus, mat finished
Judge with a 2.5 in chamber for four hundred or a new stainless steel
Public Defender for five hundred and ninety nine dollars.
Which of these two would you consider a better purchase?
Much appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thanks in advance.

@@redzone1019 For me, I favor smaller/lighter. It’s handy to be able to handle 3” shells as the 2.5” can be hard to find (unless you ‘ll reload them, which is always an option). My test gun in the video is a polymer frame and I confess I really like it. It’s held up just fine too. You might look around for one of those! Roy
Roy, I'm old (77) and retired Army. Have not shot a .45 for a long, long time. How is the recoil on the Judge w/ .45 vs 410? Can shoot my Colt Cobra w/ no problem.
Hi James, I don't think you'll have any issues. If you get a metal-framed one it's especially easy. Mine is polymer so is a bit snappier. If you shot a bruiser of a load it'd kick some, but I favor cowboy style loads! I think the .410 is a bit more brisk. Roy H.
Wow what fun.
I believe my brother (40-year LEO vet) and his wife still carry the Judge as their camping handguns. With a .410, 000 Buck load, for those two-legged critters that may come bothering them.
Hey, thanks for the review! Concise and honest. Question: where does your pinky sit on the grip? Does it have purchase at all? Thanks! ❤
This particular model has a shorter grip so my pinky does curl under. But it doesn’t cause any issues. They make many models so go to the Taurus website to get some ideas. Roy
Stay away from the WINCHESTER DEFENSE LOADS. They stick. You’ve been warned
Love em. Definitely will get one.
How does .45 colt feel compared to .410 recoil wise? Just wondering
stonerman 15 , my TAURUS JUDGE 45lc/410 revolver has the 7 -1/2 inch barrel . And shooting the 45lc ammo or 410 ammo their isn't much recoil because the gun is so big and heavy. That's why I went with the longer barrel gun to help with the recoil , I'm 59 years old and didn't want a smaller barrel gun with such a large load. Mine is so fun to shoot because of the low recoil.
My judge kicks like a son of a bitch when I fire 45LC, but that might be because the loads are pretty 'hot'
thank you roy this was a great vidio really enjoyed it
Great video and your place is a beautiful setting.
Thanks Mr. Miller. We do love it here and being able to do some shooting in my “back yard” is always a delight. Thanks for taking the time to chat. Roy H.
Thank you for this video very informative
Me encantó hermosa pistola
I love my Judge its a beast with great flexibility.
Thanks brother you are the best GOD bless you
Awfully kind of you, Wayne! Roy
Thanks for the content. Have you ever tried out the caliber conversions for this revolver?
I haven't used them, but have used that style in other guns. They tend to be compromises and accuracy is a "20 feet" proposition. Plus, you'd want five if you wanted to fill all the chambers. Might be expensive as I think they're about $30 each. But for "emergencies" a .22 adaptor might be handy. Roy H.
So a good option for keeping between the seats in truck for defense purposes whether 4 legged or 2 legged?
I sure think so. The final say is a 250 hard cast .45 Colt load! Roy
@@fmgpubs
People either love or hate the judge. I'm getting ready to join the loving crowd. I've got a buddy at church who has one and he loves it. He keeps it in the glovebox or on his person. Gotta ask him what shells/bullets he uses.
@@curtisdrakesr4900 I think you’ll like it. Very versatile and honestly very accurate once you learn to shoot it. I think it really shines with .410 loads. Number 4 shot is quite effective for overall use. Roy
Looking at getting one of these guns for each one of my trucks and my tractor on my 25 acres.
The Judge performs sterling duty as a reliable gag prop in many of Paul Harrell's vids! 🤣🤣🤣
It is an odd gun to shoot and work with for sure. But I think it does have its moments … Roy H.
Paul was a bit biased. He shot home defense shotshells at 20 yards.
@@bmx7596 Oh, well that's not how it's intended to be used, more at toe-to-toe distances. Roy H.
@@fmgpubs Yes, but I will say that 45lc has plenty of range. I can hit a 8-inch diameter target at 50 yards reliability.
thx sir. it helped me a lot
Hey Gabriel, glad to help! Roy
Good review. Wondering how it would have done at twice that distance.
Bill, I've shot it "casually" at my 80 yard steel torso target (using Black Hills cowboy .45 Colt loads) and you can hit it more often than not. I think you gave me an idea to target it out at a longer distance. I feel another video coming on! Roy
I don't think it's great for self-defense, but it has a lot of utility & it's fun.
Federal handgun buckshot does 16 inches in gel and it's accurate up to 10 yards. Very few homes have 30ft sightways.
With the right ammunition this platform is very effective for self defense. I carry one almost every day.
I just acquired one from my grandfather cleaning it up tonight next day off imma go shoot it got some other Also I can't wait to shoot
A pistol that can do it all. What's your barrel length? Seems they make 2", 2 1/2, or 3". And which of those is more useful? Thanks for your help>
I like the 3” versions. The longer sight radius helps you to shoot the .45 Colt loads more accurately. I’m surprised these guns aren’t more popular! Roy
What a grouping with the 45 Colt!
Thanks Mr. Adams. Like most guns today, the Judge models shoot just fine if you take your time with the trigger! Roy H.
Great video!
Thanks Chad! Roy H.
I carry a judge 3"/3". Standard .410 ammo is mediocre out of the Judge. .410 rounds made for the Judge do well, like the Federal .410 handgun loads. .45 jacketed soft tip rounds are my load of choice when I am fishing in black bear country.
I have the judge. Was wondering if it had a safety other then the one behind the hammer
That's the only one I'm aware of, but it's more of a storage lock than a safety for carry use. But it's safe to carry fully loaded as the gun won't fire if dropped. Roy H.
Safety selectors on revolvers are fairly uncommon.
How big are the varmints that you're going to use those three 45 Colt rounds on?
When I’m out working in the pastures, sometimes it’ll stir up a coyote, ground hog, etc. so it’s nice to be able to reach out a bit if needed. Roy
I like this fella and his video
Thanks for your kind words! Check out our other gun test vids. Roy
4 up-close-and-personal shooting in self-defense that would be deadly to a thug who would flee at once
Hello! I am a gun enthusiast. I was wondering if you could shoot some magnesium/flame thrower 410 out of your Taurus Judge at some of your targets for a video. I would love to see something like that.
Where do you get such things? Let me know. Roy
@@fmgpubs I'm not sure. I'll have to look it up.
Wonder if long term use of shot will affect the rifling in these or the S&W ??
Not at all. Most of the shot is lead or copper plated. The steel rifling will wear just as any rifling will wear with copper jackets, which means not very much at all. It does lead up the rifling so you need to clean it out now and again if you expect the cartridg loads to remain accurate. Roy
When you fire into your fields, are you using lead shot?
Sometimes, sometimes copper, sometimes steel, it depends on what’s being tested. Roy
Have you found it to be reliable? Specifically, is it easy to open the chamber after firing? In some of the videos I’ve seen, they needed to bang open the chamber
I’ve never had any issues with reliability, hard opening cylinder or anything. Roy
They sleeping on you. Great video
Enjoyable video....thx
Thanks for tuning in Ray! Roy
Someone actually made a BBs and Pennies round!😂😂😂
He reminds me of the guy from myth busters
Note buck shot will spread so watch shooting near buckets of hydraulic oil gets expensive.
Sounds like the voice of experience! Roy

Is 45 Colt Ammo Harder 2 find than other Revolver rounds like 44mag, 357mag, 38Sp, etc. OR even 45acp?? Thnx!
I’m beginning to see most calibers around now and again. But due to the higher cost of raw goods, I think the days of $10 9mm and such are gone forever. Roy H.
@@fmgpubs Yes, I'm aware of the new cost basis all around..especially 9mm, 223, 380, 45acp etc. But I was specifically talking about the 45Colt...I really never see it or a demand for it. What did u get a box of 50 for? Thanks
I have an innocently stupid question. My judge is chambered for 3 inch. Can I safely fire shorter shells ?
You bet, no issue there. I like to fire the shorter shells as they recoil a bit less and I have many empties I reload. Roy
@@fmgpubs thank you !!!!
The Governor also fires .45 acp from moon clips.
I like this Taurus Judge would it be a good back up gun in bear country ?
Well … I suppose if you loaded it with heavy .45 Colt loads it’d be better than not having a back-up gun. But you have five shots, rather than six in an N-Frame S&W revolver, for instance, or ten or more shots of 10mm in an auto pistol. If it’s all you have then put it to use! Roy
I took a piss in total darkness the other morning and had better results
You’re using a much smaller weapon there handsome. Plus peeing while sitting down and hitting the target isn’t noteworthy…He is merely showing the spread/ while you’re in solitary peeing in the dark. You must be fun at parties- peeing in the dark, asking for TP to wipe
It would be good for home defense or vehicle defense, but it's a little too big for concealed carry. If I'm gonna use .410 for defense, I'd go with 000 buckshot. I just think 000 buckshot would be your best bet for .410.
You might be right. The 000 buck is a 62 gr. Pellet at about 720 fps. But to keep things in perspective, a 60 Gr. .32 auto does close to 900 fps and penetrates more deeply. Here’s a good link covering the ballistics in gel: brassfetcher.com/Shotguns/410%20Bore/410%20Bore%20Revolver%20Terminal%20Ballistics.html. Roy
@@fmgpubs Thanks. I think a .410 3 inch 000 buckshot is equivalent to two .45 ACP at once.
@@fmgpubs those gel tests are the worst I've seen, and there's no evidence he even did them. However, there are several actual videos on YT and the buckshot outperforms brassflechers numbers. I think he had underpowered ammo. He's only getting 640fps, and I've seen mid 800s.
And look at these gel numbers, 19 inches
ua-cam.com/video/ZDMDd4eAQO0/v-deo.html
To alternate or not to alternate?
I don’t alternate. I keep the first couple as .410 since I mostly use it on field rats and such. But they’d be easy to shoot fast to get rid of, to get to the three .45 Colt loads. I wouldn’t want to “Think” I was shooting a .45 Colt load but in reality be shooting a .410, but that’s just me. Roy
Gee, now if I only had a tractor to carry one on.....
Greg, I waited 35 years to get my first tractor, now I have two. A big one and a little one with a back hoe. Tractor wealth! Roy
Look up Clevercraft for 45 acp moon clips
Can it shoot .45 ACP or .45 Super with moon clips? Thanks :)
Nope. Roy
El revolver de TAURUS EL JUEZ es perfecto, solamente critico du empañadura tan corta para dos dedos
Mare those the stock grips on the gun and if so how does it feel in your hand?
Those are the stock grips and I’ve always found them to be just fine. Roy
I wonder how this would work on hikes in the Northwest where you have cats and bears.
I think it’d be swell, Mickey. I’d load a hard cast 250 gr bullet at 950 to 1,000 fps, but keep in mind you have five shots! Roy
@@fmgpubs From what I've heard, if you're attacked in the woods by an animal that's not happy with you, you probably don't have time for all five shots anyway.
What your have there is a "modern day blunderbuss".
Ha! You’re sorta right there. Roy
