    I'm so grateful that Nolan is one of the few directors who try to go practical whenever they can instead of using CGI. A thing of beauty this clip.

    That scene was amazing. Couldn't wait to get DVD when it comes out on Tuesday.:) Thank you for the video clip.

    As far as the audio goes, I'm pretty sure it was mostly if not completely replaced during editing. If I recall correctly, in the movie, the semi makes a creaking sound as it flips. The loud sound at the beginning of the flip in this video is made by a powerful ram mounted underneath the semi that caused the flip. That ram is also what causes the steam cloud/jet on the underside of the trailer, which is easily visible during the movie (but who looks at steam when a 40 foot trailer is flipping?):P

    A large piston mounted beneath the trailer slammed into the ground, launching the back of the rig into the air. There are gear-like plates on the front of the tractor to ensure it rolls properly (if you watch the Blu-ray, the gears have been edited out digitally, making it look like the front end is floating a couple feet off the ground while it rolls :P). The video description contains links to photos of the semi, with the gears and piston. Keeping the rig together was a whole other issue.

    The second, longer shot, where the camera rolls towards the flipping semi, is filmed by the black IMAX rig you see in the middle of the screen, partially obscured by the police car (which appears to be one of the GPD cars). That car moves in front of it before it starts rolling towards the semi, so you don't even really notice it's there unless you're looking for it. You'll notice all those crew members crowd around the IMAX rig's location after the flip.
    Trust me, they only did one take. :P

    one of the most amazing stunts ever. you never see this in movies, and it is in the most amazing movie ever.

    @William82oct The video kinda screws with your head a little since it was taken at such a high zoom. The people and other cars are actually pretty far away from the semi when it flips. Everything just looks like it's the same distance away because of the high zoom. That's also why it looks like the semi is barely moving forward. Rest assured, they only flipped it down LaSalle once. They did do a test flip elsewhere. Click the link that shows up after the flip to see the whole process.

    Damn, I can't wait to be a filmmaker. The atmosphere is so exciting. Thanks for this!

    Pop the Blu-ray in again. When the semi flips, it is first shown from a 45ish degree angle from the front driver's side, with the camera moving with the semi. That's the vehicle you see on the right with the IMAX rig on it. That shot lasts for 1.5 - 2 seconds, just long enough so that the viewer can get a sense of the semi's sudden stopping and launching. Then it switches to the camera you're referring to, which I'll explain in another comment (running out of space).

    another way to tell this isn't the flip they used in the film, is because the SUV with the camera on it, is moving right along with the semi.....in the movie, the camera is being drivin TOWARDS the semi. This was a just a practice flip

  • @RoadLessMarveled
    @RoadLessMarveled  16 років тому

    Oh, yeah, of course. You should see what they did to that semi to make it work. Aside from the things listed in the video description, it also had massive steel plates that ran from the front of the tractor all the way back to the trailer to keep it together as it rolled/flipped.

    You are one lucky SOB did you know that? That is going to be a classic scene someday, I swear.
    Do you live in Chicago? That must have been awesome to see the things that were filmed on the streets.

    Actually, I've just watched the bonus feature about it, and I was a little off. That IMAX rig in the middle is a stationary one, and its footage was not used in the film. The camera that filmed the second shot is actually a VistaVision camera mounted on the front of the police car. I've added a link in the description and on the video, to the entire bonus feature detailing the off-site testing and the filming of this shot.

    was the landing loud enough to feel through the ground in your feet ? I think anyone who was able to witness behind the scenes of the true filming of this movie, of any scene, anywhere, is truly lucky.

    I've got the DVD, you can see how they made the stunt, something shooting from the center of the back of the truck, you can see the smoke from the shooting out thing in the movie, I don't know why they cept that, ruins?

  • @RoadLessMarveled
    @RoadLessMarveled  16 років тому

    I wasn't there, but I think that you probably could if you were as close as the people seen standing in the foreground. I believe the trailer was empty except for the equipment that powered and controlled the ram (and the ram itself), but that is still a lot of weight falling from pretty high. I doubt it shook the earth or anything, but I'm pretty sure the person who recorded this would have at least felt (in their feet) the ram hitting the ground.

      @@user_Genry732 I like to understand how or why something is done. The truck is already flipped, to get rid of it from the lane, did they flip it again or just drag it away. I don't think dragging it away is feasible, too many damages will be caused by it. Curiosity kills the cat :)
