@@infernalsquid It's about Batman. Yes, it was Dent who said it first. It's a depressing quote, especially given how he falls in the end. Had he died a hero instead of Rachel, he wouldn't live long enough to suffer, which made him a villain in the end. However, it's spoken by Batman the second time. As you well know, Batman didn't want the people of Gotham to lose hope by finding out what their "hero" Dent had done. But his bad deeds couldn't stay hidden, so Batman had to take the blame. It was Batman's heroic sacrifice for the people. Therefore, when credits rolled Dent was still a hero in the eyes of the people, meaning he died like one. However, despite being innocent, Batman was considered to be a villain by the same people. Therefore, the quote refers to him in the end. Batman didn't die a hero like Dent, but lived long enough *to see* himself become the villain. The quote doesn't say "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to become the villain", but rather "You either die a hero, or you live long enough *to see* yourself become the villain". The quote can't refer to Dent, because he didn't see himself become the villain. He became one. Batman never became a villain. He saw himself be one, or in other words, saw the people seeing him as such.
"Why is he running dad?" "Because we have to chase him." "But he didn't do anything wrong." "Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a dark knight."
