    0:00 Introduction: Liquids while fasting
1:00 What does it mean to break your fast?
1:45 Dietary fat burns before stored body fat
2:15 What can you drink while fasting?
Consuming anything that causes a spike in insulin will break your fast. This is important to know while you’re doing intermittent fasting.
Some beverages can trigger an insulin spike and immediately stop your fasting benefits.
Keep in mind that consuming something that's 100% fat will not break your fast. This is because fat does not spike insulin on its own. However, consuming more dietary fat will deprioritize the burning of body fat. So if you’re goal is to lose weight, consume less fat while fasting.
Fiber will also not spike insulin because your body can’t digest and utilize fiber.
Let’s take a look at what you can and can’t drink during your fasting window.
What to drink and not drink during fasting:
    1. Water: Yes
    2. Water + apple cider vinegar: Yes
    3. Water + lemon juice: Yes
    4. Diet soda: No
    5. Black coffee: Yes
    6. Bullet-proof coffee: Maybe (may slow weight loss)
    7. Coffee with cream: Maybe (if you’re using heavy cream)
    8. Bone broth: No
    9. Green and herbal teas: Yes
    10. Coconut water: No
    11. Coconut milk: Maybe (in small amounts)
    12. Pre-workout (BCAA): No
    13. Alcohol: No
    14. Milk: No
    15. Electrolytes: Yes (if no added sugar or unhealthy sweeteners)

I think the thing that may have helped was that I quit the cardio bootcamp craze, which is the exercise program that I used previous to Dr. Berg exposure. I keep reviewing his videos, even today, to keep me on a good path. After dropping the weight, I now enjoy cardio twice a week. Still using fat burning exercise as my daily routine.

I found not being too hard on myself the first couple of full day fasts helped me learn what it was like not to be eating my normal foods/ schedule. I still made a bit of progress. Then when my break through to really start feeling better happened after some omad days, that was my incentive to prep for full day fasting with having on hand the things I could drink. Be warey of getting light headed. Minerals in the water help a lot there. I am actually midway through my first ever 3 day fast and feeling very satisfied with myself. Go team!! I agree, my thought is you need to ease yourself into the no carb or very low carb by removing the obvious what I call the big carbs, pasta, bread, rice, and potatoes then move on to the more hidden carbs which Dr. Berg has pointed out in various videos. The same goes for sugar, get rid of the obvious and move on to the hidden sugars and/or at least recognize some of the substitutes.

And they just don't taste good anymore The temptation goes away. It's quite awesome! Remember just because somebody calls it keto doesn't mean it is. Marketing has gotten a hold of the word keto, you have to read your labels. Learn all the different types of words that is used for sugar. Just because it's organic cane sugar doesn't mean you should have it. Sugar is still sugar.

It's a long road to getting out of old habits/cravings for carbs but I'm determined and going to get there! I often rewatch these videos to re-solidify the lessons/importance of no cheat days etc etc. Big thank you from Melbourne AUS.

Your cortisol spikes in the morning, so it's probably best to hold off on the coffee until at least 9am. Having coffee before that will tend to have the reverse perceived effect, and it's probably why people tend to drink multiple cups a day. This may sound similar to sugar, because it is, from a perceived energy standpoint. The reason why fasting in the morning works so well is because your body prepares you to fast until you find food, since Ugg and Ogg didn't have refrigerators.

Great drinks for breaking our fast during Ramadhan: drinking water plus apple vinegar or grape vinegar! I live in Jakarta. So, I start to fast around 04:30 and break my fast around 18:05. To break my fast, when my stomach is empty, I drink a glass of drinking water into which I added some apple vinegar or grape vinegar several seconds before I drink it. Then, I drink it up and wait for ten minutes. After that, I eat some oats or bread. I have diabetes. However, by doing this way, I have no problem with high blood sugar. Moreover, I feel very fresh and much more fresher if compared with my drinking other liquids, such as regular fresh water or juice.

After 3 serious days of not eating until 2pm, I started to feel the effects. I kept that going for two weeks. Lost 8 pounds, had an incredible energy. This made me naturally want to eat better foods, all the time, because crap foods made me feel terrible when I went down to eating once a day. I found a diet that my body absorbed and digested very efficiently.
Ironically enough: adjusting to this have me incredible energy.
I also lift weights, and adjusting my protein intake (8 egg whites a day, along with a half a pound of lean meat) my muscles are not only getting bigger but they’re lean and efficient and look much better

Naturally, water is the number one drink in any diet. Water is essential for overall health, but also essential for healthy hair and skin. Water does not contain any calories, carbohydrates, or fats. You can also enjoy different types of water such as carbonated water, ready-made flavored water or flavor it at home by adding lemon slices, fruit slices, mint leaves, or cucumber slices. The rate of drinking water should not be less than 1.5-2 liters per day.

The problem with your statement is that everyone is different and our hydration needs change based on activity level, personal metabolism, and environment. You can get hydration from foods, as well as, from liquids. And periodically doing a dry fast (no liquids) is not a bad thing.
Typically, you should be urinating 6-8 times per day (every few hours). It should be straw colored, not too dark and not too clear. Learn about the newer hydration science by researching structured water, gel water, H302, EZ water, etc.

I unintentionally had started omad when I was sick and it had carried on because my appetite got wacky, I shouldn’t lose weight as I’m a little under weight already, but with omad I’m not getting enough calories for sure , I’ve been getting headaches and dizziness, lack of energy, it’s been horrible! But it’s been hard to force myself to eat more after eating so little for a month while I was sick

Dr. Berg, first I want to say, thank you for all of your free UA-cam videos. I just have a question about the shower filter, I don’t see where they list fluoride as one of the contaminants. Are we to just assume that it does?

I use activated charcoal capsules in my brita filter pitcher. I can take the capsules, but opening the capsules and stiring the water, its messy but the water tastes so much better when the charcoal settles to the bottom. I let it go thru the brita filter when i add tap water to the top.

Dr. Eric! I have been eating once a day. Some days are healthy and other days are not so healthy. I match with just about every symptom of high insulin resistance so I have started taking vitamin b1, d3, zinc, and fiber. I have noticed weight loss but have been experiencing a lot of watery bowel movements and I am wondering what that could mean? Is my body adjusting or is there something I could add to my diet to help with it? Thank you so much for your help and videos!

I am 8 hours in. I intend on doing a heavy 3×3 bodybuilding split for growth. I need to lose the slight love handles I have. This is also being done approximately 1 month back into the gym after a quite extensive lay off period from training as a whole. I am probably 19-22% body. All this after 7 years solid of weigh training prior to my break. 72 hour fast wish me luck!!

Thanks Dr Berg for helping me do keto the right way in the US. Back home in Nigeria, everything is organic and I didn't need to use many filters to get 100% good food and I'd see health benefits/weight loss in as little as 3-5 days but here I got excited with variety on the shelf not knowing most do more harm than good,I gained some weight even on low carb , zero this here and there was wondering wt#???Now I know they have hidden/horrible additives .I'm starting all over, overhauled my pantry /refrigerator and spending a little more to get organic.
