I found this very helpful. Haters are sad people who love to slap a dislike on smart content they didn't make themselves, I fear. It happens on my videos too (where the sound isn't perfect, but I'm working on it). I think we end up at the point of realising that no matter what we do, some are going to try a smackdown. Ignore them and know that you've done something cool to help those who are willing to accept the help. That's how I think about it anyway. Good for you, putting yourself out there and helping other people try to improve what they do. I appreciate it!

angie mango What makes you think it is sponsored by Rode? It is not sponsored by anyone. I had to purchase all of the equipment myself. The Airstash was at the time of filming the *ONLY* way to get audio recorded on an external recorder using an SD card on to your iOS device *without* using a computer. And as of today, it is still the best solution.

Hi there, a really great review that should have many more views. I have a good question, it is now a year later since you filmed this, ... is there a truly wireless way to record audio on my iPad ? So a mic that is Bluetooth, and some sort of receiver that plugs into the iPad ? ( I would love to see a 100% wireless version ) that records real-time audio into the iPad WHILE it records video. Just wondering if you have ever seen something like this ? Thanks and thanks for your great video review !

G'Day mate. We have never experienced any crashes or lost files and have been using this for a few months now and recorded hours of audio with it. We had it running for over an hour on an iPad, iPhone and iPad mini for this shoot and it worked flawlessly on all three devices.
That's just out experience with the app. Hope it helps.

Very informative. I went ahead and amazon primed the Behringer, and a mic and cord. I plan on using the mic set up with my ipad and airplay you tube karaoke songs thru my apple TV. I'm not really looking to record but this looks like the best way to use the apple technology for some family fun, karaoke style. Let me know if you have any other suggestions...

So how does this equipment provided power into the iPad why you recording, And editing?
How is the iPad receiving external power During lengthy sessions?

Hesynergy I’m by no means an expert but what I’d recommend is getting a deep cycle car battery 12v, inverter to DC to AC power, and some extension cords. This way you can plug a microphone, iPad and two more devices into it if need be and go on for a very long time.

Great tutorial, and informative about some products I wasn't aware of. I was hoping you would have included an explanation of how to get recorded audio into the computer for editing in post. Is there a way to move the files via iTunes, or do they have to be uploaded? Large audio files would be so much easier to move via connecting my iPhone to my Mac using iTunes, but I don't see a way to do it.

    • @Epictutorials
      @Epictutorials  10 років тому

The best method is to use iTunes and access the audio files via the iTunes File Sharing Section available under the 'Apps' tab. Rode Rec supports iTunes file sharing.

A really great review - covers all the input methods for an iPad.
No silly nonsense and waffle - just really good information.
There are better usb interfaces on the market than the Behringer - I wouldn't say that this Behringer was a " best buy".
    Additionally :
Now there's the iRig HD mic which connects straight to the lightning port - wasn't available when this video was produced, and the iRig Pro interface for connecting other mics to the lightning port.

Appreciate the video. Quick question...I record all my stuff from my iphone and I wanted to be able to record with a better mic (plugged into the headphone jack) than the built in one. Is that possible? I was definitely looking at the Rode SmartLav. Any other tips/advice with my circumstance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again. Cheers.

    • @Epictutorials
      @Epictutorials  10 років тому +1

The SmartLav is definitely much better than the built in mic for recording dialogue but no matter how good the mini jack microphone is, it just can't compete with using the 30-pin or Lightning connector with something like the Apogee Mic (they are about to release a new version which records at 96Khz). Check out our iRig Pro Review as this is the best iOS audio recording solution I have used: iRig Pro Review - Unboxing and Epic Demo | IK Multimedia iOS Audio/MIDI Interface

Do you have a suggestion for microphone to increase audio when recording a Facebook LIVE stream? The purpose would be to increase audio during board meetings when roughly 10 individuals are present and speaking at different volumes but more than that, capturing speakers voices more loudly. The microphone on my Iphone 7 or Ipad don't create a loud enough volume for viewers to hear (and I have tried my laptop which doesn't work well enough either). Any suggestions on what microphone would work well to improve audio during a Facebook LIVE stream would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    Great video, by the way!

I do some amateur voice acting and don't own a laptop, but own an iPad. I'm just not sure if you can control the microphone input on an app and I have to yell sometimes. Do you know any app that lets me control that? This method of using an iPad could work for casual speaking, but I'm not sure if I could use something like an iPad when yelling because it may result in terrible peaks if I can't control the input.

Great video - 2 years later it still applies which speaks to the video (the positive) and apples 🍎 "refuse to improve " technology (the negative). I use Apple as little as possible but because I am in the advertising industry and do a lot of creative pic/video "stuff", my as little as possible is 1/3 of my device load (device load? I just made that term up...I think). Anyway, thank you sir

Thank you very much. Loved the video and clear instructions.
A question though: My mixer has mics and some other inputs going through it. The master output connected to an audio interface, while the stereo out connected to a digital recorder.
Now, I would like to feed all the mixed signal from my mixer into the ipad/iphone while recording a video.
    How can I do that?
Can I just connect it to a headphone amp using a ( 3.5mm 4 conductor TRRS Male to 3.5mm TRS Microphone Input Jack with built-in Attenuator) from kvconnection? (I have a 4 output headphone amp connected to the phone output).

+Bertrand Laurence It certainly would be possible, but I have not tested a direct line in to the headphone jack for quality. You may get better results taking the line out from the mixer into an iOS compatible audio interface like the Apogee One (amzn.to/1ZxVFAa) or PreSonus iTwo (azon.ly/u5QJsF) - both of which the Lightning input over the headphone jack.

Yes I do normally use the Rode Lav (not Smartlav) for all my pieces to camera hooked up to the Behringer Xenyx Q502USB mixer via an XLR chord.
I then run the Mixer into either my iPhone, or iPad using the USB to Lightning cable from Apple or sometimes straight into a Laptop or Desktop using the Mixers included USB cable.

And yes you can use iTunes to import audio files from Rode Rec app. Also Rode Rec will let you export in whatever format you want: WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC etc. If it is for a website you probably don't want uncompressed WAV files as they are so big. MP3 or AAC would be more suitable for your website.

However I have an IPad Mini as well as a 27 in IMac loaded with Logic Pro and of course Final Cut. My question is while I now know how to use my I Pad mini to record external audio thanks to you I was wondering if there is anyway I can use my IPad Mini as an external monitor for my Sony fs 700. The LED screen is quite cumbersome on this model although the camera itself is fantastic. I was hoping to save some money by utilizing the Mini as a field monitor which I can attach to my rig. Any suggestions? Regards Shane

I want to record an interview from an incoming phone call on my iPhone 5. Can I wire the speaker output from the iPhone jack directly into my laptop, or would I still need to have a microphone close up to the speaker on the iPhone to pick up the signal?

This is a really interesting video! Thank you for sharing this info, i have 3 questions, what would you do if you need to récord the sound of the drums, with several mics? Is it possible to get the sound from a mixer? What program do you recomend to edit the sounds (bass, medium and high, effects etc)? Finally if you recorded several sounds, what program do you think is the best for putting together all the samples from different instruments? Thank you!

Great video! But I have a question. I want to use the Behringer mixer with my iphone 5. But I want to record the video and the audio simultaniously just using the camera app. I don't want to edit the audio and video together after. Is it possible?

I record on my iPad but Sometimes the audio picks up on on my Rode wireless and sometimes I just get a high pitched squeak with no audio. It’s not consistent. Anything i should be checking?

If i decide to use the Behringer Q502, how do plug in my headphones to monitor the instrument or vocals in garageband? Can I just plug into the analog 3.5 headphone jack?

Hi there, Just come across this old video, but just wondered if you could help with the following please: I just purchased a Boya - M1DM lavalier mic to improve the audio quality when using both my iPone 6 and my old Toshiba laptop. I understand the Boya has a TRRS jack and so should plug directly into the phone headphone port. However, unless I am missing something, as soon as you plug it in it cuts out the sound of the person I am speaking to. And with my laptop, that has two ports for the mic and the headphone, when I plug in an adaptor/splitter for this, I seem to have the same issue using both headphones and without.
I specifically want to use the Zoom platform with the external mic, so perhaps I am just missing something here. Any help much appreciated. Many thanks Tim
