With the iPad Pro 2018 and 2020, you don't need a powered USB hub. You can just take a USB-A to USB-C converter for the audio interface cable, it will get power directly from the iPad.
I’m also half way there got the drum mics and iPad at least just need the interface by the way works on the iPhone 10 xr too at least the app is available so may try it out when I get the jnterface
I've wanted an iPad for quite some time but always held back because (I thought) I'd still need a laptop for recording my voice over work and having both is too expensive. Thank you for informing me about this recording setup.
Unbelievable!! I try now one song to recorded, and sounds very good. Maybe you can tell us also how to setup live video with live music.. Best regard🙏🏽
Thanks, great info. I’ve got a Behringer U-Phoria 202HD that I had sitting around unused for a couple years or more, just hooked it up based on your video and it records to iPad beautifully 🎸👍🏻
Man this is a big help and will defenitely save me a couple of bucks. Insted of buying digital to analog converter and its cable, now all i need is a powered usb hub. Thank you so much!
Exactly what I am hoping to do, record vocal and guitar using my audio interface to GB on iPad. I have ordered a powered USB hub, my iPad Air has a USB-C port so have ordered a splitter that gives me USB-A and C, plus HDMI (may be handy for something else). I am a complete beginner with an iPad and GB, so thank you for a simple and clear tutorial to get me started.
@@GearTestTVTech you're welcome, I've also ordered a usb-c hub for my iPad which looks very useful. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0816T4NJW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_mVQbGbQ4TJ6MZ
Well done! Nice presentation. I play clarinet and use Band In A Box for my backing tracks. Easy peasy! I have found Garage Band ( for my non-techie brain) to be just slightly less confusing than Hawking’s ‘A Brief History of Time’. But I would like to record directly to my computer etc, so your tutorial was instructive. Thank you!
Hi I just bought a full setup: Rode Nt1a mic, scarlett 2i2, the adaptor to get it to plug into iphone, and I have a laptop or a usb mains outlet that I thought I could use - am I going to be needing a usb hub as well? In fact I’m now very interested, what is the usb hub’s function? Your video is so so helpful btw, your brief help of GarageBand was really good too so if you do/ have an in-depth tutorial that’d be great
Hi man, I really enjoyed watching your clear explanation on the use of iPad and a USB interface. You do. Great job and your way of exposing the matter is clear and practical. Thank u so much, keep it up. Cheers
I loved the video. Great explanation. Time stamps was great. The best part is that you are a great story teller. The funny part was “ARE YOU STILL READING THIS..!” Keep it up bro.
Very useful demo and thanks for your efforts . Please tell me: - the charging cable supplied with latest iPad Air4 (2020) has what type of USB on either end of cable, - if it is USB-C on both ends, then can this cable work with a microphone having USB-C Port. Thanks, pls do reply Dilip
Great presentation and very helpful in all respects. I dig GB, people have to put in the back of the room but its a very powerful tool. Yes ableton is cool but snobbery usually comes from insecurities because it ain't the tool. It's the perception and skill that makes the music. Thank for your channel. I'm in. 🎶👍🏼
Can you take a step further, and demo several tracks being record as an overdub? Monitoring one track while recording another. Seems like GB can do this, but haven't found the magic tap or hold and slide hidden button yet. Thx
Hi. Great video. I hawe a question, if you to this interface from iPad 3.5 jack to the front audio input can you this interface use an master output for music and headphones output for a second output for a DJ program?
Great, thanks for this one. Can you have a phone call on an iphone using this setup? OR even join inline meeting beeing heard as well as hear others on a headset connected to the interface?
Need it urgently... How can I connect with audio interface in iPad for ZOOM App... Which would be the cheap and best audio interface & microphone... I'm basically in India, so those equipments should be available in India, online... Expecting ur suggestions & reply soon
I was thinking of running my music coming out of a mixer to my Ipad/Iphone, so that I can Airplay the music to HomePod or other Airplay speakers. My question is 1) Do I need the audio interface to do this? 2) And if yes, after running the music through the audio interface like you do to the Ipad, what other app or how do I play the music that is coming into the Ipad? (So that ultimately, I can Airplay it out to other speakers)
So update for the new iPad pros (2020) you need to buy a usb-c to usb connector and a lot of them come with multiple USB ports on that one dongle so you might not have to buy two separate ones! Just to save cost for anyone looking 😊
Can you help me, my iPad won’t charge at the same time as being plugged in with the interface ? It’s neither cables as both of them work When being plugged in individually. I am using the sabrent USB port you recommend. And the Apple official extension cable ? Any help would be appreciated. My charging wire is also Apple official. Could it be anything to do with the plug? I bought a universal power supply that supply’s the 5 Vaults required.
No lie I have been searching for this video for 4 hours today. I own a MacBook Pro but I just feel like everything I do and it is useless I guess it’s because I spent almost 3 years depending on my iPad to produce UA-cam videos and sound and is taking me such a hard time so I wanted to go back to my iPad and figure out a way to start creating podcast for marketing purposes due to my job in your video just gave me the key to it I had actually found that sound box before finding your video and I was considering buying it and now I think I’m 100% sure about making the move
Question can I use the audio mixer garage band software in iMovie is there anyway to do that by the way your video is great never knew I can do this going to buy everything you said to buy and use it for podcast thank you
Hi Paul great video - so using the same setup, can you record video from iphone 12 camera and the audio mic work that way as well. I have a B1 studio projects mic. Thx in advance.
I don't have any videos on it, but you should be able to use a 1/4" cable from the guitar/keyboard and plug it directly into the front of the interface.
Hi! Great stuff here. I have a specific question for my scenario - How do I use an iPad as my plugin workstation for my guitar and then run it into my iPhone for streams? I plan to go from guitar to interface then to plugin on iPad and finally to phone for the livestream.
Hi Paul thanks for the very clear video. I wonder if you can help me - I have a AER compact 60 amp that has a DI out port. I was wondering if I could record my vocal and guitar from the amp direct to my iOS or pc ? Thanks again John
Great tutorial. is there a way to know whether the vocal recording is from the internal microphone of iPad or external microphone? I am not sure if I am recording with my external mic.
There may be other recording apps that list which input is being used, but with GarageBand I just make a quite noise very close to the external microphone to see if it shows up on the level meter.
Any idea of this setup will work using the camera app built into the iphone? or when using the zoom app? will it utilize my external mic or will it be stuck with the internal mic in my iphone 8 plus?
Hi great video! I have the same audio interface. I am trying to use it with my IPAD but it only powers on when I put 3AAA batteries . With PC it works fine either with the USB cable or DC power. When I put on TAB mode plugged to DC cable it won’t power on . When I try use computer mode and DC power the IPad won’t detect the interface . So it has to be on tablet mode. Which mode did you use to connect ?
The audio will automatically playback through the audio interface, so you just need headphones or speakers plugged into the interface. As long as you don't have the live monitoring button selected, you'll be fine.
solidstategold I use focusrite scarlet 2i2 and camera connector kit powers the audio interface as well as charging the iPad when it has the lightning charger lead plugged in. I use a power bank on this so I can record out of the house. No wall sockets required. One iPad, one interface, one lightning cable, one usb (for the interface) and one camera connector. As an aside, I tried a few cheaper connectors and they did not power the interface. Apple one worked fine.
It may depend on your audio interface. None of the interfaces that I've tested have worked without the USB hub, but it sounds like Warwick Lowe had success with a Focusrite without a USB hub.

Actually, my 2020 iPad has a usb-c port which gives enough power so the USB hub isn't needed, have sent it back.

Very clear. How about recording video with smartphone which includes audio like vocals and visual in karaoke singing.

Hi,
I would like to know if it is possible to connect my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (Audio interface)
with my iPad using "Lightning to USB adapter".
Crisp and to the point 👍🏼
How do you personally hook up your audio interface with your studio reference monitors?
Superb demo, concise and to the point... perfect, Thanks
Will it be possible to connect to a bluetooth speaker or airplay speaker/headphones with the iPad pro instead of going out to the monitors with the audio interface?
Hello, can I use this configuration to record audio for the native video app on iphone or ipad? thanks
Massimo Marchi i had the same question. Im going to try it.
I finally had some time to test this, and yes, it does work! I just posted a video with more info about it if you're interested.
Thanks, this is what I've been looking for!
how do you get your song onto your PC? from the ipad
Great straightforward video. 👍. Do you know if that interface would pass audio to the camera whilst recording on the iPad. Using apples camera app or a 3rd party app?
