Ladies remember your birth is not a medical emergency (unless something is actually going on) so there’s no reason you need to be on your back with a doctor or nurse between your legs ready to unnecessarily intervene. It’s crazy that the most painful position that goes against gravity, causes tearing, prolongs birth and can result in complications for baby, is the default that western hospitals encourage and consider normal. Don’t spend your labor on your back, don’t push on your back; listen to your body and move to the positions that feel most comfortable and are best for the stage you’re in. Learn as much as possible about positioning and gather as many tools as you can to empower yourself and be able to advocate for yourself in a hospital setting. You know your body better than anyone else! You’re literally built to birth, your body is so so capable, more than a lot of medical professionals typically make you feel/think. One of the best things you can do for a positive birth experience is take charge of your birth, and if you’re here it means you’re already doing so! We got this💪🏻

So true! I was pregnant at 16 and had my daughter 2 weeks before I turned 17. I wish I knew what I know now. I felt totally helpless and looking back, it makes me angry to think how I was treated during my pregnancy and labor and that I was under the care of people that had hardly any clue, lacked common sense or didn't care. Now that I am pregnant as a grown adult with a lot more knowledge and wisdom, I will be calling the shots!

Sometimes medical professionals may give push back on things not for reasons that are empirical but have more to do with the way they were taught and practice as well as their comfort level. The same goes for VBAC. There are doctors that won't even try it if birthing person has had a c-section they will automatically schedule all future births as a c-section.

Sarah is 100 percent right. So many women think they have to give birth in the classic childbirth, or missionary sex position. In reality, the classic or missionary type position is one of the hardest and most painful ways to push a baby out. A lot of women find that squatting down or being on all fours (hands and knees) so you are not laying and putting extra weight on your back is much more effective. Both of these positions were shown in the video. Before you go into labor, practice getting and pushing in different positions to find out what is right for you. You can give birth anyway you want in a hospital, you don't have to be forced into the hardest position possible.

I am thankful for this series of videos! Attempting a VBAC in June and hoping for a better experience this time. I was induced with my first and basically labored in bed for 15 hours, nurses never suggested changing positions (with the exception of bringing the peanut ball out once after I got my epidural 6 hours in) and I didn’t know any better at the time. My labor stalled at 7cm (though after your videos I question whether it was actually stalled bc I was 7cm for 4 hours before it was considered stalled, before that I was progressing about 1cm an hour) and I ended up with a csection.

I wonder if pushing on your back gives some women a hard time because of how the baby has to travel to get out.. I like all those suggestions you gave. I started labor on all fours actually and wound up on my back for the final 10 minutes or so just because I was so tired, and I had back pain for a few days because of it (I remember the moment when I hurt my back, too. Thankfully I barely had any tearing and my postpartum was almost pain free). I mean, the midwives were like "are you sure? You're almost done!" But I just wanted to rest a bit. Next time I know that it's not a good position for me.

Carla Hallabrin side lying is a really good one to push! It definitely helped that you spent most of the time on all fours but next time if you feel tired or want to push in a more restful position, laying on your side also opens up the hips and is considered really comfortable, a mid wife or doula can guide you on how to open or place your legs in the moment.

Thank you for telling the truth about hospital births with many OB docs...if you are medically able and do not want to give birth this way, there are options in 2022...work with an OB doc who follows the midwifery model of care, birth center with the midwifery model of care or even a home birth. But either way ladies, it's your choice. You owe it to yourself to prepare PHYSICALLY for both home births and hospital births, c-section or vag births, etc. But thank you nurse Sarah for sharing the truth about what happens in real life in the hospital setting, even if you have a birth plan.

Pregnant with twins. Any advice for trying to advocate for your self, especially given the fear the medical team seems to have around twin natural births?

    • @MommyBee1589
      @MommyBee1589 3 роки тому +1

I gave birth to my twins vaginally at 38 weeks. Twins can have a lot of variability so it’s important to listen to your care provider in the moment especially as they can tell if baby B has flipped etc and may give you guided advice. Twins are considered higher risk so the fears are generally justified. However I pushed both of my babies out, no problem, and as long as there are no other complications you can too. The best thing to do is communicate your birth wishes and talk to your doctor about what they’ve seen with other twins and what pushing positions they’ve found most useful. I remember being really adamant about wanting to try different positions but at the end of the day most hospitals require that you have an epidural so that in case of an emergency C-section they don’t have to knock you totally out and you miss the birth of your babies. If something goes wrong, they HAVE to be able to move quickly. Talk to your doctor and see if this is the policy where you are. With that being the case in DC, pushing on my back was the easier position and was actually very comfortable. I got both out in under ten minutes and my son baby B was breech. It was a wonderful birthing experience and even though I had the epidural it was very light I felt everything and I had an awesome delivery i was very happy with. If you have more questions reply here and I’m hall to share more details if you’d like! Best of luck mama you got this!

  • @LivKingsley

“If your nurse is comfortable with it”. That’s the only thing that gets to me. Frankly, I’m not gonna give a flying f*** if my nurse or whoever is comfortable. Unless there’s a real medical emergency, I’m gonna do what I’m comfortable with and push how I’m comfortable pushing. My nurse or whoever (cause I 100% do NOT plan to be in hospital) can just suck it up and shut up about it. That phrase is a HUGE part of why I don’t want to be in hospital. That, and I was assaulted/abused as a child and, despite YEARS of therapy, I HATE being touched by people I don’t know well/am not comfortable with, especially when I’m in pain/vulnerable. If someone touched me without asking first or tried to move me into a different position when I didn’t want it, they’d probably get yelled at, and smacked if they kept trying (unless there’s a real medical emergency, but even then, I will make sure I’m 100% informed about what’s happening, why/where they need to touch, and warned before they touch).

It’s due to the way the birth canal is shaped. On your back, the canal is tilted upwards, meaning you’re essentially pushing your baby uphill and out as opposed to working with gravity. That tensing needed to push increases the risk of pelvic floor issues.

    • @aosangel

I was on my back and hated it only because I wanted to push with my legs. I couldn’t because the stirrup were more to rest your leg on then to push against. It was hard though because I was on the IV drugs and couldn’t think straight. With my first I just used nitrous oxide and that worked great but they wouldn’t allow it because of COVID. My first was a forceps birth so I didn’t push much.

According to a comment that I found in the comment section of a previous video, this is why women give birth laying down:
King Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643 to 1715, played a huge hand in popularizing the lying down position... for a very odd reason. According to legend (and a handful of medical scholars), Louis XIV - who had over 22 children by both wives and mistresses alike -had a fascination with watching women give birth.
Lauren Dundes, a professor of sociology, wrote that Louis XIV "enjoyed" watching his mistresses give birth, and disliked the upright or squatting positions for "obstructing" his view of the process.
"Since Louis XIV reportedly enjoyed watching women giving birth, he became frustrated by the obscured view of birth when it occurred on birthing stool, and promoted the new reclining position," wrote Dundes in the American Journal of Public Health. The influence of the King's policy is unknown, although the behavior of royalty must have affected the populace to some degree".
So basically women are expected to give birth while laying down because some creep found it fascinating.

My height is short. I am 4'8. My doctor says that because of my height i should go for C-Section because my pelvic will be small and difficult for the baby to pass through. I have been working on all positions and making my pelvis flexible. What should I say to the doctor and hospital staff who are forcing me to opt for C-Section?
