- The Game Awards 2023 Game of the Year Nominations are live and as usual the internet and gaming community is in a complete uproar with 40 year old Xbox & PS5 Fanboys arguing over which game deserves to win game of the year saying things like "Xbox Tax", "Starfield was Robbed", "Spider-Man 2 is the Greatest Game of all time", etc... On the other hand people are pointing out games like Hogwarts Legacy, Armored Core 6, Starfield (LMAO), and Final Fantasy 16 were snubbed from the nominations entirely in favor of a controversial title like Resident Evil 4 Remake which has people arguing over whether remakes should be allowed or not to be nominated. GOTY 2023 & the Game awards in general in my opinion is a massive waste of everyone's time. The show serves primarily as an outlet for Geoff Keighley to push a bunch of mobile game,s and movie ads for a little over 3 hours with a few announcements and awards sprinkled in every once and a while. Overall the concept that a bunch of games journalists have the authority to decide what is and isn't the best game of the year is a laughable proposition to anyone who actually enjoys video games and is familiar with the obsession with woke politics and hatred for actual gameplay they typically have. Overall the game of the year for whatever year is the game you enjoyed the most and no one else's glorified opinion should have any sway on it whatsoever.

I remember back in the day, Game awards were an honor amongst the game and gamers. Now, it's just the best award for those games that appeal more to those who DIDN'T play the game and games that just spread on what The Critical Drinker's call "The Message".
If that was really the case, Starfield would've been nominated for everything and would've won everything before the votes were counted.
Starfield went heavy on "the message," but only got 1 nomination for something which it has no chance of winning.
BG3 didn't push any "message" other than great gaming, LarianStudios even criticises modern gaming trends a lot.

What baffles me is that, I don't care about the Oscars, but at least the people voting there are people who actually are involved with films, actors, directors, producers, etc. No journos allowed.
Why journalists are given validation and have a say on who should win GOTY awards is beyond me. At the very least they should only allow people who work at game studios (can't vote on their own game) the only voice to vote.

It was mid - i was expecting a detailed interactive Hogwarts with NPC's you cant talk with, and have a backstory. Instead we got a generic, bland and souless Ubisoft open world, fake RPG that we've been getting for a decade - just this time redesigned as a Harry Potter sidestory.

Prolly because there wasn't much of "graphical fidelity", no hours of cutscenes to infodump the story on you, no inclusive characters or anything to circle jerk around, just good old fun gameplay.
Baldur's Gate 3 & Zelda are only games that deserve to win GOTY tbh. Also I think games like FF16,Armored Core 6, Hogwarts deserved nominations way more than games like Alan Wake 2, Spiderman 2, Starfield.

Baulders gate there’s a alot more choices and flow and many different combat encounters. Griffin slowly becoming a grifter himself now a bit,because it seems like every game is “woke” now. @@GriffinGaming Yeah, although I feel like FFVII Remake had a bit too much padding. Combat was great though. FFVII Remake should've cut the filler and each part should be each disc from the original since it's a trilogy and it was 3 discs.

@Soup-man I'm pretty sure there has to be a minimum amount of time these games are supposed to be. SE it seems forced the padding in FF16 so it could be over 40 hours and the same was done with FF7R. It does look like Rebirth may be different so hopefully the studios have learned how to getbaround that mandate.

Remnant 2, Armored Core 6 and Lies of P should have been nominated for more awards. Absolutely superb gameplay focused games with zero agenda
Octopath traveler 2 got completely snubbed it has one of the best soundtracks and rpg mechanics this year yet ff16 is there. FF16 isn't nominated for best action or action/adventure but is nominated for best rpg is backwards logic.
Don't know how Alan Wake 2 win best action/adventure when re 4 remake had better action and better adventure all around. Easy slot in for remnant 2, Lies of P, or even Hogwarts Legacy instead of Alan Wake 2 of all things. They are putting games within categories it shouldn't have even made it into.

At least somebody realizes it. Hogwarts being one of the best selling and looking games of the year while not getting a single nomination shows you were the industry is at. You nailed it though, the "panel" that votes on the awards are the same people that were scared to even review the game based on their support over the "current thing". I do enjoy watching the show but know not to take it serious.
Seemed like another Arkham Knight combat third person. Played too many, need something unique to draw me in, but hogwarts isn't enough to draw me in sadly. Story seems poo aside from a few memorable side quests.

I honestly dont believe that Baldurs Gate 3 doesnt put gameplay in the backround. it heavily focuses on players choice and therefore you can skip fighting by talking a lot. and you can skip talking by fighting. i think thats really close to how DnD itself plays.

I’ve given up on these award shows, so many questionable decisions with the Oscar’s and the Tonys and when the last of us part 2 swept that’s when I realized all of these really are circle jerks, look how this year Spider man 2 got nominated over final fantasy 16, Hogwarts, Diablo 4 and even hi fi rush
Final fantasy 16 had very crap gameplay, the turn based was better. Hogwarts legacy had CRAP gameplay, it was literally tapping left mouse button for spells. Diablo 4 is crap because progression isn’t good. Zelda could win but not over BG3. Griffin says BG3 has 0 gameplay, it literally has more gameplay than Zelda. Out of 10 hours I have had 10 mins of cutscenes which were all just conversations

Honestly Baldur's Gate 3 deserves the win for how much it pushes the genre it is in and how much Larian studios have been doing for the community and the game in general. Also to be fair, unless the journalists are playing on easy/story mode (which they probs are), even normal mode BG3 is quite challenging and makes you think during combat as you have to make sure what moves you wanna make and if you don't you'll waste your spells/powerful abilities.

When it does deal with that sort of subject matter, it is done rather tastefully and never prolonging it. Hell you can choose to not engage with it either so it is purely optional.

Games I enjoyed most this year were Trepang2, Robocop, and Deadspace Remake. Those games were all super fun.
Just beat Trpang2 this week. What a fun throwback to when games were good. It wasn’t too long, it had varied levels, incredible music, tons of unlockable cheats and it was only $30. So glad it was ported to consoles.

I mostly agree at what you said, but one thing that I think need more consideration is Baldur's Gate 3. I know it doesn't have a adrenaline inducing, fast-paced, immersive gameplay, and have some "theme" that leaning to wokeness, but it's an amazing CRPG game, that many D&D nerds and CRPG fans like me really starving for years. It's a niche game, but the scope and the depth is astonishing to say the least. The amount of choices, builds and approaches to many situations and quests is mind blowing.
In that last sentence it gets outdone by WotR on literally ever point. BG3 just had shinier graphics and voice acting. It's AAA and entirely mid.

I appreciate Griffin making more actual videos again. Also, I know he hated it, but I absolutely loved it, and I still think Resident Evil 4 Remake taking a slot for goty this year in a sea of insanely good games is the dumbest thing so far. It had it’s time to shine when it won every award in 2005. It sets a bad precedent even in a dry year, nevermind a packed year like we’ve had. But a lot of the categories make no sense and really is one big industry circle jerk with a lot of nonsensical category nods and snubs.
RE4 remake is the epitome of video game experience, it would be a crime for RE4 not to be nominated and mid games like AW2 and SM2 are.

I stopped watching TGA after 2020.... it's honestly appalling how trusted this joke of awards show is despite having a busted ass jury of conglomerates and journalists, constantly put in celebrity guests that have little to do with gaming, some of them being oscar winners despite some guy saying "f*** the oscars" at a previous GA, and mostly show ads and game trailers. Not to mention the fact that the show takes place in December and the nominations come are revealed before all the games come out. Mario RPG remake wasn't released yet and the nominations were announced days before the game came out.
What makes the GA all the more worse is that people like SpawnWave or RGT 85 and PlayerEssence basically ignore the flaws and just talk about how good the announcements were and act like nothing bad ever happened at the GA's. They don't talk about the quality of the show. It's just maddening! And i mean no ill will to anyone who enjoys watching the show, especially for the game reveals. That is one aspect the GA's have improved on since the 2020 show, even if it makes them a pseudo E3, but i gotta take the victorys i can get.
But i am soooooo done with the GA's. They are corrupt and are worse than every other awards show out there. And this is coming from someone who isn't an award show expert.

I agree with almost everything in this video but your take on Baldur's Gate 3 being having very minimal gameplay experience. I would personally have it as my game of the year because it checks all the boxes for the ideal RPG title. Yes the game is very story centric like most in the genre but that doesn't mean that the gameplay takes a back seat at all but I also understand that it's not for everyone.

I think you underestimate just how much gameplay is in Baldur's Gate 3. Like it actually requires strategy and a competent character building to beat the game on any difficulty other than baby easy mode.

Alan Wake 2 is the weirdest thing I’ve ever played, and because of that I absolutely love it. I mean how many games have an actual well choreographed and catchy musical section in it? I personally love all of the small tediums when it comes to the task board and piecing sections of the story together. I’m a big reader though, so I understand that most people may not be into it. Still, I enjoy it more when developers go out and make weird stuff that really isn’t meant for everybody to enjoy. It’s probably my GOTY pick.

@@RadecStahl I like Saga because she’s a detective and I like detectives. It’s why I adore games like Disco Elysium so much. I don’t care if they’re a man or woman, black or white, as long as it tells a good story. The developers can take the story wherever they want to, as it’s their right. It only makes sense that they would drag an unsuspecting person into the madness that is Alan Wake’s story. It keeps things fresh with a new perspective on Bright Falls and its craziness. They also continue Alan’s story, as the FBC try to wrangle him in, something that’s been building since his appearance in Control. Saga’s character was a way to keep the same formula of the last game while also continuing Alan’s story for the long time fans. I like it, but that’s just my personal opinion. I’m hoping that you can see a silver lining in this story, as it really is one that stands out amidst all the fog.

i started baldurs gate 3 expecting to play it for an hour then drop it but i didn't i spend around 135 hours on my first playthrough, the gameplay and combat didn't take a backseat thats just the type of game it is, its a C-RPG, and it is actually pretty challenging especially if you play on tactician. it 100% deserves GOTY being made by a independent studio with less funding than any other game thats on the list this year. and it doesn't push a woke agenda either
