The highlight of the show for me was Sweet Baby getting a shoutout. It was surreal to see the supposed "/pol/ boogeyman" getting advertised by the game industry and people will still claim it doesn't exist.

Just a friendly reminder that The Last of Us II won "Game of the Year" a few years ago in 2020; a game that EVERYONE hated, even the woke (they said it was too dark and violent) that nobody even talked about three months after it was released. Ghost of Tsushima came out that same year. This year, Hogwarts Legacy got completely snubbed just because it was loosely associated to JK Rowling, even though most people enjoyed it across the board and it had massive sales numbers (even if I and others like me never played it.) Yet a game that was released broken three years ago and still never managed to live up to expectations, Cyberpunk, can get a nomination. If anyone thinks the Game Awards aren't as corrupt and f*cked-up as the rest of the modern games industry, then you're 100% part of the problem.
I loved it and all of my irl friends loved it. Hating a game is totally fine but assuming that everyone else did is beyond stupid

The fact that there are people who think this event has any credibility whatsoever on judging games makes me lose hope for humanity. They don't award the best game of the year. They award the game that pleased journalists the most or the game whose publisher paid the most money for the award, while once in a while awarding the obvious choice so they can keep suspicions low.

Gaming compared to movies is just so serialized nowadays. You have drama and thriller movies coming out every years with all kinds of highs and lows. Then you get GoW: Ragnarok where everyone are friends, with no drama whatsoever, even the dude who MURDERED all my children is my friend (Freya and Thor) because "we must be better". Literally the "my mom name is Martha" of video games.
It's infuriating. No conflict or tension? Having Kratos beat Freya to an inch of he4 life only to relent at the last second would have been great.

I was just watching some of the old Spike Video Game Awards, (the predecessor to The Game Awards that no one talks about anymore) and all you have to do is contrast it with this slop show.
It's pretty apparent that games truly aren't made for gamers anymore. Seriously, the difference in tone between both award shows is staggering, and it's because the Spike VGAs reflected the awesome gaming landscape that we had at the time. The Game Awards is nothing more than a yearly reminder, a reflection of how much gaming has deteriorated over the past 10 years.
I remember watching the Spike Video Game Awards back in middle school and enjoyed it. Shame to see how things have changed.
All the award shows were better back then.
E3 was still watchable and at times actually funny. Even the MTV VMA awards and ESPY awards had something to keep you watching.
Man, Kojima really has fallen from grace since the days of Metal Gear... What a shame.

Kojima's fall is really tragic. It is honestly horrifying to see talented people become tainted by the darkness of mediocrity for fear of losing their comfort in a degrading world. Its okay when we see unproven people because most of them didn't have any talent or passion to begin with, but to see the good rotting away in a slurp of emptiness, deceit and decay is akin to seeing hope being snuffed away from kids.
Maybe he just wasn't that talented? Did he single handedly make those MGS games or was a whole team of writers, developers and artistis involved?

Here's the thing about Ikumi Nakamura:
The last time she showed up on stage at the Game Awards it was to announce her new project Ghostwire: Tokyo. "Spooookieee" she said at the time and they showed some trailer that had little to no gameplay in it. 6 months into the project, Ikumi bails claiming some kind of anxiety disorder (her words) and the project goes ahead without her. The game eventually releases and it's honestly one of the most boring games I've played recently. You can feel that pieces are missing and that they cobbled what little they had together to recoup some of the costs.
So be warned about whatever this new thing she's selling appears to be...
It's possible she butted heads with Shinji Mikami (like she has in the past on other projects) over creative decisions made in Ghostwire, which could be why she left Tango. Funnily enough Mikami left Tango as well not too long after Hi-Fi Rush released, even though he was the original founder lol
And yeah, I have no idea what she's trying to sell with this game. Should've waited another year before revealing whatever the heck that was.

@@Shieftain Just so it's clear, I like Ikumi Nakamura, which is why I was so disappointed in how Ghostwire: Tokyo played out. However, I think there was a little more going on. Ikumi is a game designer, sure, but she's a design artist - something she's very good at. For instance, she created the Safehead enemy for The Evil Within, which is arguably among the most iconic enemies in video games.
But I don't think she was quite ready to direct her own game and that's where I think the anxiety issues came in. Being a game director is A LOT more responsibility than she was used to having and I think she cracked.

The main reason E3 didn’t feel like Hollywood back in the 1990’s was because gaming was still niche. It attracted gaming writers, developers and gamers themselves.

That's actually not so bad, I prefer authentic voice actors. I don't think wanting ethnic casts to sound ethnic to be bad at all. From an atmosphere standpoint, having a white dude voice act an arab figure in Afghanistan/Morroco is just a no go. I think the cast should always be true to its characters: I don't want a female black Thor in movies either, or an Asian Lara Croft. I'd say it's more "woke" to want people from different races to interpret characters that have a different background.

To be fair, Kojima did write much of the script with another guy doing the other half of the work, at least until MGS4. MGS 1 was his and the team's best work. Then the games started to become very bloated. MGS2 is its own thing and is a post-modernist masterpiece on its own. MGS3 was the last good game. MGS4 was a desperate attempt to tie up the story, sacrificing the gameplay for literal hour long cutscenes. MGS5 was peak style-over-substance Kojima writing and "movie" crap. No wonder it was in development hell for years and was unfinished with its 3rd Act entirely removed.
Think of Kojima like Bethesda. He was good for his time, but has devolved into absolute bloated shovelware.
