Here in the United States we have the same problem and let me tell you a little story we have a national park in the state of Montana and the Wolf was hunted to very low numbers and when they brought the Wolf they found that the Wolf saved the forest because the Elk were killing all the trees because the Elk were scrapping there antlers on the trees meaning there were too many Elk and when they brought the Wolf back it kept the Elk under control. I say LEAVE THE WOLF ALONE.

You aren't up to date with wolf population data. The northwest, as well as other places, like Russia, have an out of control surge in the wolf population. They need to be managed, and that means they need to be hunted. BTW, elk meat is delicious, and their numbers are low because of heavy wolf predation.

Exactly. The fauna eco-system has been affected by the industry of farm animal products. The farmers killed the population of wolves not knowing the consequences for the forests.

Nature knows what to do, and despite our best intentions we never get it right. Sadly our opposable thumb, intricate vocal skills and undying arrogance leaves little chance for anything else but failure. I hope our children do better than we did. Progress in modern times is nothing more than yelling "hurry up" at a microwave......sad.

Here in Michigan, the Wolf was re-introduced in the State, in the Mid 1990's. They are protected and surviving well. They are mainly populated in our Upper Peninsula, for the greater territory, and lesser human population. It works well here.

Man has to leave nature to itself and quit trying to manage everything!...Mother nature will take care of things and there may be an occasional domestic animal taken by the wolves but the good they do in culling the herds is part of the natural way of things and must be allowed to continue so the natural balance is preserved....

There are very few wolves in some countries, for example here in Finland. We are talking about a few dozen. They are often solitary animals, sometimes in flocks of 5-10. The wolf is a shy animal. They haven't attacked humans here in the last century. Yet there are many people who want to kill them. My opinion is that it is us humans who have also taken over the wolves' habitats. We have no right to exterminate them. 😀❤🦊

    (1) Nature abhors a vacume.
    (2) Human intervention may be required to maintain the balance.
    (3) Free-running domestic dogs are a more serious problem than wolves.

I'm in the eastern US where the hybrid coywolf (coyote + red or grey wolf) is beginning to fulfill the duties once held by wolves. Our efforts will be toward a balance between predator and prey through regulated hunting practices. Punishments can be severe for those who ignore them. Such as you have done here in your vid, education is essential to understand the proper balance for any given area. As a hunter who often hunts alone, I've had very bad experiences with wild dogs born into the wild more than coyotes , wolves or their hybrids. It's always controversial, but how are humans managing themselves while maintaining the natural balance? Overdevelopment and not restoring the old before developing new land is something that saddens me greatly as suitable habitat for all wildlife continues to decrease. Thank you for the new vid, Vanessa. You are a very welcome relief to political news. 🙂👍

Wolf, population Scandinavia The results from the inventory period 2021/22 show that there are approximately 540 wolves in Scandinavia. Approximately 460 of them are in Sweden. But we don't have the same problem.
The wolf is our dogs' closest relative - and has a natural place in our forest. Once upon a time there were thousands of wolves all over Sweden, except on Gotland. But it was hunted to the brink of extinction and declared protected in 1966, with fewer than 10 individuals remaining. Wolves have the right to exist in Sweden, according to both the Riksdag decision and the EU's species and habitat directive. So how do we find ways forward to share habitats and forest prey?

Very well done. Just came home from a long hike in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Many tourists here this time of year because the elk are active and the leaves are turning color. Living in an area such as this, I regularly see the enormous attraction that the natural world has for many people, most of whom are deprived of it for the most part. People creating traffic backups looking at a deer which are common as rabbits here😁Several times a month I encounter deer, elk, moose, coyote, marmot. Occasionally a black bear or mountain lion. Hope to see a wolf one day! We humans are as much a part of the natural world as any other animal and I think that this is reflected in our instincts to be exposed to this. Sadly, I think that once animal husbandry became commercialized, predators such as wolves were high on the “hit list”. We are the ultimate “invasive species” as we seek to dominate rather than participate.

During World War 1 the fighting was very fierce on two fronts. It was trench warfare, and the area between the trenches was called no-mans-land. It was very common for one group of soldiers to crawl up out of their trench, and charge the enemy trench across no-mans-land. This was called going over the top. Many, many men were wounded, and had to lie where they fell. Wolves ate them alive. Wolves also killed and ate men who were not wounded. The wolf menace got so terrible on the Russian front that the Russians and Germans agreed to a truce in order to erradicate the wolf packs that were eating the men on both sides. Animals that were natural prey for the packs had fled the area due to the fighting, so the wolves did what they had to do to survive. But so did the men.

Hello, thank you for a great video! Its a really difficult question and you covered it very well.
However, every ecosystem needs a top preditor. Here in Australia we have dingos. No wolves, naturally, people have imported then and there are rumours of escapees roaming the wilds.
A bigger problem here are the wild dogs, they do horrible damage. Im way more alert for them than dingos. Dingos will take whatever they can, there is a famous case from the 1980s, however they eat their kills, wild dogs like killing and do it for sport and leave the dead animal.
I grew up on Grimms fairytales and I was quite disappointed when I saw a wolf in real life, my imagings was more werewolf-like.
Im not a farmer, although I have been. I my heart goes out to their loss. Those who live in rural areas must bare the brunt of this problem. Its easy for me to say, because the problem doesnt immediately impact me, but.....
The world is all about bringing nature back into balance with all this climate change stuff, wolves are a part of natural ecosystems. Can humanity learn how to share?

To my mind, It is our responsibility to protect anything we need to from natural dangers with fencing and proper supervision whenever outside that fenced area (and they can be fenced out - it is just expensive. They manage to keep them contained in zoos and wildlife parks with escapes being very rare).
That is how we used to do it, with shepherds, swineherds, etc guarding against wolves, foxes, and bears, with shouts, stones, slingshot, spears and archery as a last resort. In many countries of the world, they still use that method.
Yes, that costs money, so the argument is purely economic. If it puts up the cost of meat, well, that is unfortunate, but if we had never got away from it, we would not have noticed - it is only because of modern farming practices that it is a problem. So we must change those practices. In the past when children were used as herders, they did so when they were able to protect themselves and the flock they were herding - David was a shepherd, and used his ability with a slingshot against Goliath. Any wolf quickly learned to stay away from humans, even if the animals looked tempting and the wolves were hungry.
I could not help laughing at your parody of Instagram bait, how stupid it is and how true!

Hey Vanessa 👋. Glad to see you and Aika out and about. Wolves can be a big problem for livestock farmers so if a wolf becomes a problem they have to be dealt with some how. Either killed or trapped and reloaded somewhere away from livestock. Like Sweden you talked about. The fact is there just isn't the natural habitat for them to live without enter acting with people anymore and that's the way it is. They wouldn't be there on there own because they don't have the natural resources there anymore. They are back because they are being released by people. Yes we need to save existing wild areas for them and other wildlife but they don't need to be so close to people. This way the problem is solved. 👌😉

I was a teenager when I read that book and I still hold today my feelings toward wolves that I formed at that time. I say, leave the wolf alone to do it's part in nature and learn how to live with them. btw, love your videos Vanessa, keep them coming.

Great topic Vanessa. I lived in Alaska for many years. It’s always the same wolf controversy. To me the wolf has its place in nature. They keep the sick and old unproductive big game under control but I have seen areas the wolf became to populated and over killed game animals. Wolves are not a totally noble animal. Their kills are a terrible way for their prey to die. They will rip the intestines out of a moose or caribou and begin eating them alive. But that seems to be natures way. When there are too many wolves they need to be controlled just like any other game animal. I love to listen to the wolves on a cold nite in the wilderness. I never felt threatened by wolves and I only remember one wolf predation on a human in all my years in Alaska. A woman was once dragged off a trail and eaten by wolves. I do know of several incidents of wolves coming into peoples yards at nite and killing and eating their dogs. From what I have read wolves in Europe many years ago might have preyed on humans. I don’t know what the difference was. Anyway lot to think about.

Wolves are shy creatures who do not hunt humans under normal circumstances. My grandfather grew up in northern Ontario , Canada and we hear the often in the woods on his way to and from town to the farm. He almost never saw any trace although he knew they were there. Even Canada some years, thanks to idiot politicians have wolf culls to lower populations, shooting them from helicopters. It's insane. This is no way to manage wildlife. As far as danger, there are many more bears in the forests than wolves, but they too are usually very shy of humans. Cattle farmers are just too damn lazy to care about other methods of getting rid of a wolf pack, like relocating. It's not the mom and pop rancher but the big corporations. What a world.

Here in the U.S., most wolves are found in the western part of the country. The last wolf in the eastern U.S. was killed in Webster county, West Virginia in the late 1800s. In 2018, I was told that West Virginia's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was planning to re-introduce wolves to the state as they had done with elk just a few years earlier. I don't know if that is true, or not. Wolves were once a vital part of the ecology, and if re-introduced, they would be helpful in driving out non-native species, like coyotes, which are considered a nuisance.

The USWS has released so called Red Wolves in the coastal plain of eastern North Carolina, they've been here for 30 years and they have to keep reintroducing them because they ultimately migrate off the national wildlife refuges and are killed on farmers properties after attacking their animals. They have spent tens of millions of dollars to try and get them restored, it's throwing money down the drain, they'll never stage on the refuges their entire lives, they are naturally going to seek out the easiest animals to kill, farm animals and that is their downfall.

I've heard this debate here in the States. But it's been found that if the habit is healthy, they seldom hunt farm and ranch animals. Of course there are some rogue's, and they need to be dealt with. But not exterminate the whole pack. That's how we dealt with it on our farm. The individual animals that cause the problem. Grandpa also taught us that all animals have there place.

Dear Vanessa, it is always a pleasure to see you and hear from you. You have chosen quite a politically charged but very important topic. And you have invited everyone to say their piece and ask ask them for their personal opinion. In brief, I am not for encouraging wolves to re-populate Germany. There is , as you have said yourself, too much competition for "Lebensraum." Wolves and farm animals generally do not mix. People and wolves generally don't mix. So why force them to mix when it is against nature and the consequences can be deadly serious. Heaven forbid that a person's small child was eaten alive by a wolf. How can you justify or come to terms with this. Remember the story of "Little Red Riding Hood?" I can see the pro-wolf community penning a letter trying to justify the introduction of wolves in Germany when a person has just lost their child or a member of their family to a wolf, and they are sitting in a nice safe office somewhere in München, with their families safe and sound.
There was a similar situation in N. Australia where open season to hunt crocodiles was withdrawn. This resulted in an explosive growth in the population of a certain river which became infested with salt water crocodiles. If an Aborigine woman is eaten alive, the Australian authorities don''t seemed concerned, when it was their fault as it was their hair brain policies which resulted in the tragic killing in the first place. Sorry, I like people, but I dislike crocodiles. Crocodile lovers should place a crocodile in their swimming pool and go swim with it, if they can.
Wolves have a bite force of 8 MN/m2 (Meganewtons per metre squared), which is about 3x the bite force of a German Shepherd dog. Sometimes, the advice of making yourself look big and making a noise in a stand-off with a wolf does not work. Then you are lucky if you are armed with a military assault rifle, irrespective of legality (which is a joke in such a case) to deal with the situation. Wolves are known to attack from the rear. A pack of wolves , needless to say , is extremely dangerous. Shoot the alpha male first if you can.
Bush craft is no longer fun when you have to run the gauntlet (play Russian roulette) with nearby wolves who can kill you in your sleep if you are camped on the ground.I hope and pray that no one in German ever has to face off a wolf, or fight a wolf for their survival or to protect livestock. But I don't think that the benefits from re-introducing the wolf in Germany outweigh the disadvantages, and so I am against re-introduction of the wolf in Germany.
Off topic, what is the gas situation like in Germany Vanessa? Hope you and your family are well xxx.

In the US we have multiple forms of deadly wildlife. Four species of bears, mountain lions, crocodiles, alligators, 7 venomous snakes, coyotes and of course wolfs. Other than for coyotes and most venomous snakes, there are varying degrees of protection for these animals. However in areas that have no population control, all of these animals can and do expand in population, and become habituated to humans and thus lose their fear of humans…with bears in particular becoming emboldened to the point of breaking into houses to raid food. Harmful events were once uncommon and almost always rural. However today we are seeing deadly encounters even in metropolitan areas. Obviously some of this is owing to rapid population increases where species are protected, but parallel is simply dumb human behavior. While rural folks that grew up with these risks understand correct behavior to minimize the chance of a bad encounter, the majority of our population is urban and near clueless of proper behavior to minimize risk. Animals that have lost their fear of humans and repeatedly kill farm animals or threaten humans should be relocated to wilderness areas or humanely disposed of. Governments can also offer compensation to farmers for their losses. For example, my state will compensate for bear damage to bee hives. They want the bear population to grow, but recognize that with a home turf covering nearly a hundred square miles, there is no place within the state that a bear can be relocated to that doesn’t include humans and their bee hives.

Hallo Vanessa, a interesting topic video , Wolves are a large predator animals and should be kept on large wild animal parks only with other wild animals living in its own ecology system kept away from farms 🚜 and people, its to much of a safety issue if Wolves are close to farm animals and people if a wolf 🐺 is wanting food they will attack anything animal or human they are a large Predator not a cuddle toy .
    ❤️Vanessa.

On the Canadian prairies there are few wolves; its just not their habitat.
But we have a high number of coyotes that breed almost as fast as rabbits. The average # of coyotes taken in Saskatchewan is 25k a year (one year it was 71k under a special bounty) as they prey on cattle, sheep, chickens, rodents, and domestic pets, etc. The population is sustainable at that rate. Without hunting, it would be the end of farm animals. The furs are used for clothing and the carcasses feed the birds.
A growing problem is wild boar (mating of imported Russian boar and domestic pigs); we have an open season on them since they have no natural predators. Even the coyote won't hunt them. We also have a smattering of black bears which don't cause too much of a problem and the SW corner of the province has the highest concentration of cougars in the world - and yet they aren't nearly the problem that coyotes are. Cougars generally are after the deer.

In Slovakia(Carpathian mountains) we have one of the biggest population of the bears in the world (according to density of the people population and our small country).Population of the bears is between 1200 and 2000.We are having lots of meetings with bears. One case when the old man was killed, two years back, but that was rare.We have lynxs, eagles, wisents and wolves too.But it's really rare to see the wolfs even for hunters.Wolfs are living hiding avoiding to meeting to the people.Same the linxs or wild cats.Yes some people see the bears as a problem cause of fear but i think theese animals lived here for centuries so they have place to live here. Our neighbour Czech republic has maybe 5 bears accross whole their country and they used to say:We don't want bears, there is no more pleace for them cause of huge density of overcrowding.I'm proud that we have all these animals cause i love nature and wilderness. The best thing you can do is learn how to behave when you are in wilderness, don't disturb animals in their habitat and what to do when you meet some .
    Live and let live...

wildwomannnnn ive missd u, on the topic of wolves, yes, the wolf should have its habitat, there has been numbers of studys that showed lack of wolf is causes of weaker deer herds and even eroision is caused by lack of wolf in those environments, the erosion was caused by lack of trees because deer population was so high that the deep consumed the trees that would hold soil in place, btw, the earth human population is double what it should be, and this figure comes from economics, so many people is really the cause of unemployment, etc,,good to see you

We have them in the US and it has been proven that they actually help nature in ways you would not think. Living with out bears and lions they are all part of the system. My girl friend has 3 of them she lives with and they pull her bike and sled. A 12 high fence will keep them in you just have to watch the snow level. I will get one when I retire and move into the Sequoia Forest. They are not like dogs but can bond with people. Just don't expect them to sit, stay, and roll over LOL

I think we are to save as much Wildlife as possible and that means building more Apartments , condos, and going back into our cities and restructuring old buildings 4 house to Wellings or recommercializing. But we do need to conserve what land we have left in the United States and every other country should do the same wolves help keep down rodents and pest that do harm to livestock and when farmers can learn to live with wildlife they will be abundance for both.

Hi.Vaneesa.The problem is not the Wolf.We have destroyed their habitat. We removed their food.So they attack farm animals. In Canada there is no known case of wolfs attacking humans.I grew up in the bush with wolfs always around.I found them to be very curius.I have spent many a night in the woods with wolfs right next to me.I never see anything but their eyes.I always feel at peace with them I talk and they listen.I can sleep anywhere when I know they are watching me.What it boils down to is a balance. of nature.
