You are correct, the Guitar melody and Harmony are unreal in this song.

This is one of the greatest tunes of the 70's.
    Listen to those guitars.
    Listen to those voices.
Even the drummer did an outstanding job.
The bass player is absolutely amazing.❤

Really enjoy your reactions, Harri. Loved the way you said, "diamonds in my ears" along with the guitar heaven references. So lucky to have grown up with this music. It never gets old!

Every song on the first album is fantastic, but this is actually my favorite Boston song. Also check out "Can'tcha Say (You Believe In Me)/Still In Love" from their third album.

This was on the 2nd album. I always thought it should have been on the 1st record. That would be the first album of a band and their greatest hits all rolled into one. R.I.P. Brad Delp gone too soon.

This album caused an uptick in speeding tickets. Oh, to be young again and driving the 150 miles of back roads between the Airforce base and my ancestral home. A cassette of both Boston albums and another of Springsteen, Queen, Styx, Rush, and Kansas to keep the tachometer near the red line.

All guitars, including bass were performed by Tom Scholz in his homemade basement studio. He was also the producer, engineer, and songwriter. All vocals by Brad Delp.

Most guitars, not all. From Tom's interview with Guitar Magazine, July, 1987:
"That was always the problem. I knew I could find the parts I wanted and I wasn't having much luck with anybody else finding them. The only exception to that was that Barry Goudreau came up with a couple of leads that were pretty good in some things. He did the leads to "Long Time" and "Used to Bad News." He also came up with the opening and closing solos in "Don't Look Back." He played a little slide on there too. He did some good stuff. That was a help. That was the nice thing about his involvement, especially when you're getting down to the end of the project and you only have so much gas left. "Don't Look Back" was the last song recorded for that album. But that is one thing you don't get from a tape deck. You get no ideas. I got ideas from Jim and Brad, who also came up with some real helpful things."
From a 2002 open letter from Tom to a now defunct Boston fan site, but the letter can still be found on two other Boston fan sites:
"Fran did play bass on "Let Me Take You Home," "Foreplay," and a couple of notes on "Don't Look Back."
Tom also said in a Boston Globe interview shortly after the first album came out:
"When Barry and I played those harmony parts or battling guitar leads, it felt like we were connected by a "Vulcan mind link." He adds, "I've never seen anyone so dedicated to honing his physical skill with guitar. Watching TV or hanging with some friends, Barry always had his SG in his hands, playing unplugged, silently conditioning his reflexes. He had lightning speed."
John Boylan was hired as the producer for the first album, he did agree to give Tom co-producing credits and gave him pretty much free hand in the production, only stepping in when needed. He loved the way Tom recorded electric guitars but said his recording of the acoustic guitar parts and drums sounded very amateurish, so Boylan flew recording engineers from LA to Tom's studio to teach him proper microphone placement techniques for the acoustic guitar and drums. And when they went to LA to do the final mixing he had to correct Tom when he kept turning up the guitars to the point of drowning out the voices.
This second album wasn't done in his basement, it was recorded at his studio, called Hideaway Studio in Maynard, Massachusetts and solely produced by Tom.
But Tom was a great songwriter and probably his most valuable skill was in knowing exactly what sound he wanted, and if the equipment wasn't capable of making it, he would modify it or create new equipment that could produce it. Many people attribute that to his degree in engineering, but his degree was in mechanical engineering, not audio or electronic engineering. When you think about it, that makes his ability to do what he did with the audio equipment even more impressive.

Barry Goudreau played the intro and outro solos (Tom has publicly praised Barry's playing on the song many times) and Fran Sheehan played some bass on the song. It's lame when the story keeps getting told wrong over and over minimizing the others' contributions.

    • @ptournas
      @ptournas 3 місяці тому

@@Lionize728 Yes, that's definitely a pet peeve of mine, especially since I was acquainted with everyone in the group except Tom. We all lived in the same area just just north of Boston and played in a lot of the same clubs and bars. I played a solo act, but I also managed a popular local band that was Sib Hashian's favorite. I remember around 1972 or 73 I got them a 3 night weekend gig in Vermont near the Canadian border and Sibby made the 800 mile round trip to hang out with us all weekend. Of course we let him sit in on a lot of songs over the weekend!

Scholz created the “outer space” sounds with his self created Rockman device. When players heard it, they immediately wanted one. So he sent out specs and had it built.

It's a great song which I believe needed to be mixed better. The vocals are competing with the guitars at different points in the song. Sometimes the vocals are upfront and at other times, they fall back into the mix. I believe the record label were rushing them to release the album.

@@stevegamez2825 No, his degree was in mechanical engineering, not audio, recording or electronic engineering - or "music engineering" (if there is such a thing). All the Polaroid patents credited to him are related to mechanics of film transport systems.
But if you give it some thought, that actually makes his ability to modify existing equipment and invent new equipment until he gets the sound he wants even more impressive.

Funny you should mention that. John Boylen, the producer hired by Epic, who after meeting Tom agreed to let Tom co-produce the first album and gave him co-producer credit and pretty much a free hand in the production, said that when they went to LA to do the final mix in the studio was the only time they had a big argument, and it was because Tom kept pushing up the electric guitar volumes so high that they drowned out the vocals. On this second album, Tom was the sole producer.
