Every single song on that debut Boston album is a classic. This epic record exploded onto the public after being turned down by every record company that it's creator, Tom Scholz, took it to for over half a decade. Pure spun gold! When I think of Boston, I think of summer.

    • @MrBallisticbob
      @MrBallisticbob 2 роки тому +3

I agree with the summer vibe. A buddy of mine and I while in garrison at Ft. Bragg, used to go out on the weekends to find a vacant baseball field and throw frisbee across the outfield listening to....Boston, of coarse! We actually made the Fayetteville, NC paper one time! lol I told the photographer who took the pics "must be a slow news day!" lmao Good times.

Moby Grape's debut and and The Band's 'Music From Big Pink' would also rank among rock's great debuts along with that little band from Liverpool who made pretty much this whole business explode, exponentially, nearly overnight!

"More than a Feeling" to me means that an old song not only brings back feelings about the past but memories you forgot about suddenly comes back. It is almost 3 dimensional to the point that you almost forget you are in 2021 and not decades before.

I can't agree more. When I heard that song for the first time (I was 18 in 1976), it sounded like if I already knew it. I wondered if it was an old song that I didn't heard since a long time (An old forgotten song?). Very strange and strong feeling I never forgot.

Boston, more than any other band that debuted in the mid to late 70’s, defined the next generation of rock and roll. They were so different and so talented that they just blew us away. That most of the debut album was engineered and produced by one guy in his basement, in his “free time”, should be an inspiration to every UA-camr.

Barry plays electric rhythm guitars on Foreplay and Long Time. Barry also plays the lead guitar solo on Long Time. Fran plays the bass on Foreplay as well. In addition all of the tracks for Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad were recorded at The Record Plant and the band members as pictured on the back of the record played all of the instrument tracks on that song. Brad played accustic guitar on that song as well.

Tom Scholz, the lead guitar player, was a graduate from MIT then went to work for Polaroid when audio was added to small color video cameras, after work went home and built every component in his studio for recording as well as his guitar "play toys", then he wrote every song and played every instrument for the first two records. Finally he got a record contract and it stipulated that he must tour and hire band members.

Harri, the singer was Brad Delp. He was one of those rare singers who had a seamless transition from one register to another in his voice, and could hit insanely high notes _smoothly._ Kind of like So Hyang does.
It is hard to imagine how popular this album was back in 1975. Virtually everyone had a copy, either as an LP, 8-Track or cassette. Sort of like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. It was _everywhere!_

There is a UA-cam video of an interview with Tom Scholz (the composer and guitarist of Boston) who was asked if there ever really was a Maryanne that inspired this song. He said yes there was. When he was nine years old, growing up in Ohio, he thought the most beautiful girl in the world was a cousin of his named Maryanne who was about 12 at the time. They lived in different cities and of course, he only saw her when families got together for holidays or other occasions. So there's a kind of innocence and childlike wonder in his reminiscence of that childhood crush.

The lead singer's name is Brad delp. I met and talked to him a few times when he was alive and he was a very down to earth humble guy. Brad was a big Beatles fan and was in a Beatles tribute group after Boston broke up. I went to see his Beatles tribute band Beatlejuice and saw him perform live several times. They were very good. Tom Scholz was the musical genius behind the music of Boston and was the guitar player on this song and actually did all the music while Brad did the singing. They had to put a group together to go on tour to do these songs but it was really just Brad and Tom.
Two other of my favorite Boston songs are Peace Of Mind and Amanda. You should do reactions to those two songs.

Truly underrated when they make those lists of great Rock voices. The whole first album is magical. Ssdly, I believe there were only a couple albums in the course of a decade or so despite the huge success of the first album because of legal disputes. Yet their legacy as one of the great rock bands is still intact.

This LP (1976) took me 'into a band.'
I ended up getting a 5-piece kit (from my Goddaughter), an electric guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, full key casio keyboard, various percussion, amps, P.A. system with mic/stand (spend it while you got it, man!). But nobody wanted to play with me. As time went by, I had children. Not much interest until 2016 (40 years later!). One son now playing guitar!
I still bash on the kit now and again, and play keyboard by ear...but just not the same!
That young 20 year old was ready, but 'nobody answered!'
"... ohhhh, hey, hey, Johnny...Can you come ooouuuuuut to play?..."

Brad Delp is one of the truly underappreciated singers. Just an amazing voice.

I saw Boston live in Toronto - 1977 (or '78 I think) and they were amazing! Brad Delp's voice was spot on as well as the rest of the band.

can't go wrong with a Boston song
might start off soft, but won't be long
    until the great electric storm
comes blasting in, so true to form

Harri, you hit the nail on the head in your analysis. If I may expand a little, many of us who were teenagers and very young adults in the Sixties and Seventies were infinitely blessed musically. All too soon, the daily grind began abrading our souls, in varying degrees, to a bleak numbness. Personally, my faith in Christ, has always been a balm. Having just found your channel, these songs evoke, indeed, more than a feeling. I time travel back to a world of relative innocence, wonder and hope to re-acquaint myself with the teen-age me, the was, is and ever will be, true me. It is exhilarating. I tip my hat to you, sir!

Not going to lie: I'm a sucker for a good pick scrape in a rock song. I love that every lead-in to the chorus includes that sweet sweet pick scrape.

I worked in a Radio Shack store in the late 70s. This song and album was used to demo a lot of the stereo equipment.

One of those rare albums, where every song on it, everyone knows, because the entire album is great, not just one or two songs. Put it on, and enjoy.

Lead singer Brad Delp.... Unfortunately committed suicide in I think 2007 after a long time of dealing with suffering through depression... Lead guitarist and multi- instrumentalist is Tom SScholtz, who played the majority of the instruments on the debut album. I think the next song needs to be Foreplay/Longtime to hear one of the greatest guitar performances on any song. I'm enjoying your reactions. Best to you...

Could be any song that brings back happy/sad memories. Though Boston has a fee that have special memories for me of people that I have lost touch with
Only song that hits closer to home is Burning Bridges.
