You're talking about the sound generated by an electric guitarist. Or, how hard the sound is. Roy Clark is the greatest guitar player ever. Eddie Van Halen asked Roy Clark for a lesson. Now, he played mostly an acoustic or banjo for his shows. But he played everything that had strings on it, including a 12 string electric. He was a humble man that never looked for the limelight. He was more proud to see someone on stage with him, that he had taught, than anything else.

There are a lot of contenders, but I think EVH is my number one guitarist. It's not just that he had amazing and diverse technique, but he was doing things with a guitar in the late 70s that no-one had ever seen before. He connected with the guitar as if it was an extension of himself, could get any sound he wanted out of it, at any moment, with total ease. He made everyone look like dinosaurs overnight. And everything he did had such unbridled, exhilarating energy to it.
You mentioned the Eruption solo - his command of technique was sublime - complex hammer-ons/pull-offs, tapping, harmonics, it was a tour-de-force of techniques, beautiful, mesmerising, and he was blind drunk as usual, let's not forget.
On top of it all he was a classically trained multi-instrumentalist. His skills inspired a generation, or two, and more to come. His music and memory will live forever.
I have a copy of 1984 (the legendary album this is from), signed by him and framed. It's worth money that I could really do with right now, but I can't bear to part with it.

I used to be lead guitarist in a rock/metal band. I was 19, 20, 21... I had this vintage red leather biker jacket that fit my (at the time) superfit frame like a glove, although it was made for a woman. I had stenciled the Van Halen logo on the back of it in silver paint.
We were playing one day in the practise rooms of our little local studio. It was a modest place, but it had soundproof walls and huge Marshall stacks. Having asked the superhot chick that co-ran the place to bring us coffee, we fell into an impromptu Van Halen medley. I muddled my way through the first couple of songs, I can hardly remember what they were. Panama was probably in there...
But the memory that will stay with me, it gives me goosebumps to recall as I write this... we finished with "House of Pain". As you guys no doubt know, the riff is catchy but not hard to play, and the solo is just the most freewheeling barnstorming there is. It's just unchained expression. And it feels almost improvised.
But I knew it so well, could play it all at 75% speed, 100% accuracy (or vice versa)... But for the first time in my life, in this moment, I got into the zone and, clinging desperately to Eddie's coattails, at the ragged edge of what I was capable of, I somehow nailed it. I mean, to me, it felt like I was almost improvising. Improvising to a loose structure, but it sounded like the album.
It felt all the better because without looking up, during the opening bars of the solo, I'd noticed the door open, as our coffee had arrived. The hot chick surely had walked in to see me in my best moment, looking like a guitar god... It was her brother.
All I got was a look of astonished admiration and a fistbump. 😅
P.S. That was 20+ years ago, my very peak, to say the least. I can't play like that now. Oh how I wish I could.

@@dr.burtgummerfan439 So true. Absolutely a matter of taste. Technique is vital of course, but there is that intangible something - the thing that appeals to the ear that you might not even be able to explain. Andres Segovia is considered the greatest classical guitar player and I've admired his playing when I've listened to it, but John Williams is the one whose playing pleases me. There are just certain players that you hear and immediately think "Oh, that's amazing". Since it is different for everyone, you won't get a universal list, though it says a lot that a number of players receive multiple mentions in this thread.

I once saw the lead singer of Van Halen, David Lee Roth, in concert. This was during the era when he was no longer with Van Halen. The concert started out with him in a boxing ring well above the crowd. Up there he was doing his martial arts kicks and flips. Then he got on a surfboard and glided, by wires, down to the stage. That was completely amazing to see in person! Good times!

One of the best and underrated guitarists out there is Billy Zoom from the band X. That man can strike a pose, playing insane picks while just smiling at how effortlessly he can do it!
X is a punk LA band founded in the late 70's and still going strong. Rolling Stone cited their first album as Album of the Year and is still included in their Top 100 albums of all time. (Side note, Ray Manzurak, the keyboardist from the Doors, produced and played keyboards on their first 3 albums)
Los Angeles, Hungry Wolf, Johnny Hit and Run Pauline (Live version freakin' RAWKS) and so many more are worthy of listening to. Their latest album, Alphabetland was released last Summer after a long hiatus of a couple of decades of producing (but the band toured their butts off the entire time).
Lead singer, John Doe has a most impressive collection of solo albums and is an amazing storyteller (Amber, you'll love him!) "I don't say much more than a drunk in a bar, shooting his mouth off!" ~Matter of Degrees~ is off his first solo album and I take that quote to heart!

I just stumbled across that Roy Clark clip a few weeks back. I love acoustic guitar and so my list would be more like John Williams (top classical) and Paco de Lucia (best flamenco). I listen to a lot of Latin influenced players so have to name Oscar Lopez and Jesse Cook (I've seen both in concert). I remember seeing Roy Clark on Hee Haw when I was growing up so I knew he could play, but I had no idea he could play like THAT - that Odd Couple clip is jaw dropping. It made me start checking out more videos and wow, he was so much more talented than I realized as a kid. On a bit of a different note, while perhaps not necessarily top ten, I think Lindsay Buckingham is underrated.

Eddie's rhythm playing was always so incredible, people focus on his lead playing but listen to this song in headphones and focus on the rhythm guitar, especially towards the end. His dynamics, so good!

Another good one from Van Halen!
Two of my favorite David Lee Roth solo hits are....
    "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody"
    "California Girls"
He's so goofy in the videos. :)

Ok I saw this concert live in Birmingham, AL in 1984, that was the name of the album. They looked just like this video live, it was incredible. Maybe my favorite live band, a lot of fun.

Van Halen is crazy because they're 2 *separate and equally awesome vibes: when they replaced David Lee Roth with Sammy Hagar they went from a more party/dirty thing to a serious and sometimes even motivational vibe in a lot of the songs which hit radio.
Top 20 guitarists... I couldn't possibly put then in exact order with so many variables, just in terms of style, skill, solo vs in-band, era
    -SRV
    -Joe Satriani
    -Steve Vai
-Paul Gilbert (Mr Big, Racer X)
    -Jimi Hendrix
    -Eddie Van Halen
    -Nuno Bettencourt (from Extreme)
    -Slash
-Eric Clapton (checdk out some of his 80s era stuff, I bet you'll like it - It's in the Way That You Use It, Pretending, and Bad Love are some of my favorites there)
    -BB King
    -Duane Allman
    -Alex Lifeson (Rush)
-John Mayer has gotten to be a badass
    -Joe Perry (Aerosmith)
    -Dimebag Darrell (Pantera)
    -Jimmy Page
    -Trey Anastasio (Phish)
    -Marty Friedman (Megadeth)
-Paco Delucia (there's an album called "Friday Night in San Francisco" with him, Al DiMeola, and John Mclaughlin, guitar *masters here. Definitely put that on for a sit down and listen one day for the whole 45 minutes or whatever it is. The tracks are probably too obscure and too long for a reaction, but all 5 are epic)
    -Carlos Santana
I'm Definitely forgetting at least 50 insanely good musicians
Edit - Yep. Cece Deville (Poison)
    Peter Frampton
    Eric Johnson
    Zakk Wylde
    Randy Rhoads
Leo Kottke (Solo artist - this dude was a drunken prodigy at many shows, he plays fingerstyle.)

I just love your list.thank you for putting some jazz guys on it
I would add Pat Metheny and joe pass. and Richard thompson( not a jazz guy).Thank you for not forgetting peter Frampton and Carlos Santana
(Full disclosure- ive been a hobbyist guitarist since 1970 .my list would be similar to yours. You obviously have great taste and love music.
If you don't already play guitar i remind you that it is never too late to
start .i would bet my imaginary fortune that you would love playing as much as I have over the course of my life. It truly has been a Godsend and an oasis for me in good times and in bad times too ; like during MS flare ups). keep.listening to the good stuff and God bless you 😊🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎸P.S.i would also add my favorite classical guitar goddess- Tatyana Rhyzkova.check out her Bach stuff on UA-cam. What about the late jerry Garcia? He was soooooooo versatile across several genres......

@David DeMar Sounds like we're basically the same person but a couple decades apart lol - been playing since I was 14 in 92 and now I'm spending most of my waking hours practicing/playing/writing/recording music, occasionally tossing my random tinkerings onto youtube here. You're right, guitars and pianos are far more effective than anti-depressants and work as well as meditation in terms of calming the mind. Oh wow, I would never have suspected it being therapeutic for MS but that makes sense when you combine the calming effect and focus. May it find a way to fade into the rearview. I truly believe absolutely anything is possible.
For some reason I never checked out Metheny or Pass, never spent much time with the Dead either, but maybe now it's time for all those guys and the ...unspellable woman at the end.
It's seriously so damned cool to continually be discovering "new" music, and to have such easy, instant access to all of what you could ever want to hear (and on video, allowing you to learn directly from any amazing guitarist). I mean I used to be able to get an album or two a week at most, whatever the paper route allowed for. Thank the lord my father had a great record collection when I popped through the veil.

Nice to meet you. Thanks for the encouragement. I really appreciate it. I really recommend watching some live original Dead stuff on UA-cam ( it's such a f- ing great resource for music of all genres .we are lucky to be alive at this time. ).i really think you'd enjoy garcia IMO he was a jazz guitarist masquerading as a rock guitarist especially with he use of modes of the major scale in his solos. I would also like to recommend the videos on UA-cam
of Dead and Co. because JM is in beast mode now. I was originally skeptical about him. Partially because he has been a major d***
In his personal life. But holy bleep he's won me over. His musicianship is very impressive and he understands his role in the band. He figured that he shouldn't try to be a jerry clone but he's learned how to be Jerry-ish.lol check him out especially if you're already a fan. Apparently he's matured as a plyer and as a man too.
Best wishes , David DeMar let's stay in touch Djd6475@aol.com. keep playing/practicing . This broken world needs more guitar music in the air.

On another note lol I think you would enjoy the documentary on Randy Rhoads that was released a few months ago. Be advised however that obviously parts of it are extremely sad.🙄🙄🙄😊 But on the whole i found it to be very interesting and moving and inspiring🎸
