Hello, what a delightful podcast!
Apologies it’s a few days late, and I’m really no expert, but regarding the folded over cuffs/hem:
A) Italian and tubular bind off are very similar, but tubular bind off has two set up rows (of double knitting) before the sewn bind off and Italian doesn’t (I think!)
B) I really recommend going down one needle size after the purl bump on the folded hem. I also find that only k2tog every other stitch (not every stitch) helps avoid the flipping (and it’s quicker for me!).

Great video! Folded hem - YES, your theory is correct. Go down 1 or 2 needle sizes for the inside. I've done 2 drawstring casings (same process), and both patterns called for smaller needle for the inside. I don't have any flip-up. Also, yes, that's a 3-needle bind-off that you did. Thanks for this enjoyable podcast. You a very fun and engaging to watch. As far as day of the week, weekends are great for uploads but really I watch any time of the week. Needles…I use and love Chiagoo 4” interchangeable so I’m no help there, I just love the cable and the sharp points. I can see how you would love Addies, they are very slick. About your hem. I just knit Kuuntar by Sari Nordland and it had a folded hem. She directed to knit a purl row, change to a smaller needle to knit the “hem” part. And then to hand stitch the hem making sure its not tight. It worked like a charm.

I feel the yarn pain in learning to knit. I learned to knit when feather yarn was all the rage back in the early 00s and my gran INSISTED this was the yarn I needed to learn with. As a result, I didn't pick needles up again for a other 20 years hahahahaha

You should definitely try the Knit pro Zing needles, really good metal needles that don't cost loads! 💛

Hi! It was a joy to sit and knit with you! I've been knitting for almost 30 years and over time my preferences in needles have changed. I prefer Chiaogoo Red Lace but I do also prefer magic loop. Just try things out, see what you like, and don't worry about what's "popular" ;)!
You can totally use the Italian bind off on double knitting- in that context it's more commonly referred to as Kitchenering or Kitchener Stitch! It helps me to think of the knit stitches as knits and the slipped stitches as purls.

Started with episode two but I'm excited to join your knitting journey. I'm just getting started knitting again and my UA-cam recommendations are changing lol.
Great video. I mostly crochet, knit when I see something I can't live without, LOL.
To avoid folded hems that flip, I do two things. I do decrease my needle size for the inner stitches (like your theory!) but I also kitchener/graft the stitches together (instead of 3 needle bind off). 3 needle bind off adds enough of a ridge that makes the fabric want to fold over on itself.

Some metal needles I really like are the nickel plated needles by knit picks, they also work with the cords you already have! Enjoyed the podcast! I love how you showed the ravelry projects.

After watching your recent videos, I had to watch your first one to get a proper introduction! I am happy to see that so many other people have already found your podcast and have given you lots of good advice. I am also a fan of small needles and miles of stockinette. I would suggest trying different brands of needles, different needle lengths, and different materials before investing in an interchangeable set. Personally, I find metal needles too slippery, and because I tension my yarn by feel, they make my tension tighter. I only use them for socks. My favorite needles are Hiya Hiya bamboo needles, which are a little slipperier than most wooden needles, and the interchangeables go down to a size 2.
As a sweater knitter, I also get sticker shock from hand-dyed yarn prices. There are tons of affordable yarns out there, though. Check out Knit Picks, Webs, yarn destashes on Ravelry, and Colourmart. Other options are to dye or spin your own yarn, although (speaking from personal experience) those can be expensive rabbit holes in their own right!

Hi, I learned that a tubular bind-off is worked by having your stitches distributed on two different circular needles after the double knitting (all knits on the front needle and all purls on the back needle). Then you basically kitchener the edges of the double knitting together. It is clearer this way that you are creating a "tube" and closing the tube up at the top. You can easily insert an elastic here between the two needles for example.
The italian bind-off shortens that to leaving all stitches on the same needle and doing some extra movements with your tapestry needle to achieve the same outcome.

I think the terms are used rather interchangeably in the knitting community, which makes it a tough google search.
I too can't vouch for this being the right information, but I think it's a very logical explanation and makes sense to me.

That "musty" smell from the Fishermans wool is lanolin and tells you that the wool isn't highly processed, it's sometimes referred to as the sheepy smell. Some people love it, I'm one of those and often buried my nose in the yarn while using it. Maybe knowing what it is will shed a different light on it for you and make using it more bearable.
Ahhhhh! I always wondered what people meant when they said that! I will have to go sniff some good quality wools!

Hi, So happy to see your video. I love your enthusiasm. Needles - I started knitting coming up on 2 years now (crocheter first😊). I bought so many needles - uugh. So many people suggested CG needles because the cords were amazing but, I found the same thing as you. The cords are amazing but, I couldn’t get past the needles. It is like they are just a little more grippy than the smooth needles plus, the tips were not as sharp and I kept splitting the yarn when I tried to get my speed up. I have the Carbons, Lykke, CG metal, Addis, CG Bamboo and the list goes on - what I found (as this is personal), is that the Hiya Hiya Sharps are the best for me. They slide, the quickness, the sharp and super smooth surgical steel was a match made in heaven. The cords are blue, not the green as in regular Hiya Hiya (which, I have experience with). The cord is not as pliable as the CG cords but, not as stiff as the Knit Picks/Lykke cords. They are easy to work with and if you find the cord annoying, you can run the cord under hot water - no big deal. So, hope that helps - just my two cents.
Also, I am intrigued with your idea of using a smaller gauge needle for the fold on a hem. I find my folded hems are just like that. It does block out some, but it is really not super cool to have the edge flip up. I am going to try that.
Thanks for posing questions and going into detail about the knitting process. I miss that in so many podcasts. I also miss that there are few podcasts posted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It seems like most are posted Thursday-Monday. Maybe, I am not finding those podcasts due to the algorithms etc😂.

I need to find a shop near me that Carrie’s the Hiya Hiya needles. Why don’t we have a knitting needle trial service yet? Lol. If I can try clothes before I buy them with services like Stitch Fix, I should have that option for needles!

For your italian/tubular bind off questions: Italian and tubular bind offs are very similar (as in the actual bind off round is the same), but the tubular bind off has two setup rows of double knitting. What you’re describing is essentially both; using an italian bind off on double knitting, meaning that the two double knitting setup rows that makes the tubular bind off are already happening.
I’m not sure on using either of those on normal stockinette, but it is perfect to use on double knitting, because while double knitting makes two layers of stockinette, while you’re working it it is actually 1x1 rib

Hello! I stumbled upon your most recent pod cast and enjoyed it so much I decided to start at the beginning 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I’ve been knitting since I was 8…multiple decades 😳😳 and I think I’ve knit with every type of needle and every type of yarn. That said I’m also a very fast knitter…continental. The thought of knitting with anything besides metal tips makes me cringe now because they slow me down so much. That being said, I’ve knit with Addis, knitpicks, signatures ect and my die hard go tos are Chiaogoos through and through. I have every interchangeable set they make from size 000 all the way to the big monsters and I just adore them. You just can’t beat the cables and the smooth join and the needle speed. ♥️♥️

I know this is an older post, however, I had a similar dilemma with my circular needle journey. Needless to say, I have at least one of almost all well-known brands. I find a lot of comfort and control in a surprising way with knitter's pride karbonz. You have control of the wood on the needle, however, there is a smoothness with picking up stitches with the metal tips and ends. I find that I do not get as much hand fatigue when knitting for long amounts of time either. It's worth trying one in your most used size to see if it may be a good fit for you.
I can’t believe this was your first podcast. You have such a natural way in front of the camera. As for the fisherman’s wool, maybe store it with some lavender or cedar and that might help remove the musty odor. It normally does not smell musty, but rather sheepy. I really appreciate you sharing your cost savings etc. I used to only knit with addi turbo, but fixed, not interchangeable. I’ve heard that there are issues with the joins in the Addi clicks set. The closest I found to the addi needle was Knitters Pride nova platina. It was my first interchangeable set. I also have a Chiaogoo set and I like them, but agree with you about the noise they make. My two cents.

Yes chaiogoo needles grip a little, if you want slippy metal, addi lace are the way to go they are delightful. Their ergonomic square needles are just as slippy and wonderful ❤❤ don't change a thing your podcasts is awesome sauce 😎 👌

On needles: I am ride or die Chiao Goo because of the extra flexible no memory cables and super pointy tips. When I first got serious about knitting about 15 years ago, before Amazon was what it is today, I don't think Chiao Goo were available in the US. I used Addi Turbo almost exclusively then. The only thing I don't love about them still is the more rounded tips.
On uploads: Saturdays are great. I don't have any other regular podcasts that release that day. Looking forward to many more from you! 💛💛💛

The bunny is adorable! Another option for small circumference if you find traditional DPNs to be finicky is flexible dpns. I use my Chiaogoo shorties plus 1 extra pair of needles.
I’ve heard people recommend those! I just always thought DPNs would be too fiddly, but I really enjoyed them!

Hi, enjoyed your podcast. a lot. I have knit a ranunculus with susurro yarn. Its a good choice. Has a wonderful drape. But beware, it grows quite a lot, especially if you intend it to be more close to skin. So I would recommend to give a thought to the choice of garment size/needle size accordingly. Looking forward to getting to know how it turns out :). As to the hem, I would recommend not to discard the idea of a double-knit hem upfront. Just do a small swatch based on video tutorial, and you will understand the meaning of the Italian bind-off. It is like a Kitchener grafting from one needle (instead of two) on which you have alternating knits and purls. The resulting fabric is stockinette. Can' t wait to see your decision.

Great first video! Very fun to listen to…great projects! Looking forward to the next one…any day works for me in terms of uploads…I knit my ranunculus using US Size 6 and 8 needles and Linen Quill yarn. Very quick knit…about 10 days…may change my mind on how I did the cast off on the sleeves (long sleeves)… but haven’t completely decided. Love your jingle and animation. I think a birthday yarn tour is a great idea…

Super fun podcast, very enjoyable to listen and semi watch while knitting away 💛 I'm also curious about stopping a double knit hem flipping up, so I'll be scouring the comments for some answers! Also now I want to knit a dress! Just got some holst garn to knit some thin basic tops, now I'm thinking it might be the best option for a light summerish dress. Sometimes I do a lot of anxiety knitting when stockinette is best, so a dress sounds perfect. Looking forward to your next video

You are not crazy. The chiagoo is stainless steel and the nova platina and I think addi is bass with nickle coating, which make different sounds. I haven't tried addi. I have the nova cubic and chiagoo and so far though are my favorite metal needles and I never notice the sound they make when knitting, or at least I haven't yet. Currently, I decide to watch all your videos from the beginning after watching your latest video and can't wait to see how it goes.

Hello! Wonderful first podcast -- looking forward to more. I love a Saturday upload bc there aren't very many. I use Addi turbo for knitting socks and love them and I also love the ChiaGoo, but only the lace tipped ones. I like a sharp point. You are absolutely right about the sound they make but it doesn't bother me most of the time as I usually have some background noise or music that covers it up.

I think your idea of going down a needle size is good to mitigate the hem flip. You could also try one less row of knitting. Additionally, the three needle bindoff can pull in so if you worked that over a much bigger needle it can help, or (and this is a much more time-consuming option) you can bind it off loosely and then sew it down.

I recommend purchasing a pattern for your first knit sweater as the free ones tend to not have as much support. Definitely use Ravelry to read people's notes on the patterns you are interested in. wonderful first! and cheers to talking about yarn affordability in a beautiful non judgemental way. no offense meant to the excellent podcasters out there, but when I see the amount of yarns in their stash I am often flabbergasted by the mere expense, not to mention the excess of product beyond use-ability. nothing wrong with spending ones wealth on yarn of all things, but it IS extremely refreshing to hear someone be extremely thoughtful about their purchases. most? people cannot compare their means joyfully to the online stashes flaunted before us like so much eye candy. and that is fine, I am a total and complete yarn snob, but that is why I learned to spin, spent my christmas and birthday savings on a good wheel, and buy raw wool in the fleece. bargain shopping is a great option for folks. I hope for all knitters to feel that their craft material is accessible, even if it takes creativity to get to it.

I am very proud of my meek yarn stash and honestly love the story behind each skein I own as they were all either thrifted, hunted down for a good deal, or intentionally purchased for a project as a fun little reward for working hard. I resonate with you so much about not having anyone to talk to about your knitting in daily life. My husband and I have a UA-cam channel in a niche that's 99% male, so I don't have much of an outlet for my knitting other than watching podcasts like yours. Keep up the great work! The renunculus will be gorgeous in that yarn
For the folded hem you can try hand sewing the top edge - loosely - instead of using a castoff. The flipping is in part caused by the tight join. Instead, just stitch the live stitches to the knitted fabric. You won’t get the visible seam line but you will still get the clean bottom edge.

I absolutely loved your first video, the dog in background was kind of cute! I watche ep 2 as well, yeah the buttons may have been a mistake but come on they ARE perfect and it makes your sweater that much more special, so see it as a good mistake... I will mention you on my next episode of my podcast Distant Stitches, we used to be Two Tangled Skeins and have been recording since 2012. This podcast journey is amazing, I do the same and put an episode on and listen while I work and look up when I hear something interesting. It was like sitting chatting with a friend.

I have been knitting for many years and have a ridiculous amount of needles I have tried... my suggestion is that you try the knitters pride Mindful collection.. as of now they are my favorite interchangeable set... look them up give them a try..😊

Also I have literally no evidence to back this up but I think the Italian/tubular bind off might work for double knitting because the double knitting process mimicks 1x1 ribbing???? I could be way wrong but I also think one of those two BO methods has setup rounds of double knitting. Personally I just go straight into the BO part of it (lol but maybe I’m just lazy?)

Great first podcast! Your fishermen’s wool should smell sheep but definitely not musty. Your hem is flipping out because you have one too many rows on the inside of the hem. Always do one less. Dropping down a needle size should work too. Blocking will help.
Thank you!! I need to find some good sheepy wool to compare the scents. Who knows with Amazon. And there is indeed one less knit row on the hem, it just has a funny little flare to it. Hopefully blocking will take care of that!
